  1. you have likely never driven Saab 900 turbo or old Volvo. French cars fell apart even as brand new. Saab and Volvo tested cars to safety since 1980 and seen saab getting hit hard to side without driver injuries and doing barrel roll and on both driver survived no injuries and car body held expect bumper and few other parts which absorded energy. They were overkill on safety back in day and still are. But yeah would avoid most of old cars for that reason. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9fw9nou_G8 here video from what topgear where they more extreme with 1980 saab 900 turbo yeah not like Volkswagen or other faked their modern car emission tests ever. VW jetta diesel versions had sensor detecting emission test and reduced engine power to pass and be was not only company which did/is doing so. So I really would not trust company wording about them. And good luck trying reach those emission or consumptions in real life. Only time had was because had water on fuel tank on one Opel (since near empty tank for too long and cold and warm). What year car you got? For most cars cheap eml327 dongle will do the trick. It will simply pop in. You can find one off ebay. Then you need diag software that can work with your car. For GM it is hardest find one since GM does something to make code access hard using third party utils (also affect Opels which were owned by GM). Newest car I know EML dongle to work is my friend 2009 Honda Civic SI. Also if your car is old enough/manufacture is kind enough to allow it there may be secret button combination to show error code on radio display or at digital mileage/metric meter on dashboard. You can find if there is any to your car using forums and others. It can be O2 sensor too that monitor exhaust emission to adjust engine. Do you have excess fuel use or lack of horsepower? For example car is not stable on idle or to accerelate. Not neccessarily catalysator fault One other thing that may trigger error light is dirty injection system. Not always catalysator unless you got exact ecu error code. If code wont point to catalysator I would recommend unplugging that battery for while, get fuel injector cleaner and add it to petrol. Then drive car fuel tank near empty and refill it to max and see if stays away. HOWEVER. If you plan pull battery make sure car manuals says you can (due some new ones got that thing on ecu causing engine not to work) and that you know possible radio unlock code. Some cars need code to unlock radio after unplugging. If car need code it is usually back of owner manual otherwise no worries. And for final do not get me wrong. I am not modern stuff hater that "modern technology is bad and cannot see good sides". I am not hating modern or old techology, I hate abusive technology. Nowadays planned obsolence, user tracking every single way, limit what user can do with equipment they paid, advertising and other so I do not want use some products for that reason. I do have lot of modern technlogy at home and can say that some things like hard drives, fan bearings/bearings overall for example have improved a lot in recent years. Had not have bad sectors on hdd and bad sectors are not ok anymore, they are defect, SSD brings speed while no need worry head crash if drop laptop or move it too quickly. I try select products that easily fixable, reliable, not too locked down or contain too abusive features. Examples of what I find as abusive features are advertisement in OS by default (Windows 95 IE4 desktop update, Windows 98FE, Android (non degoogled), IOS. MacOS, Windows 8, Windows 10, Tiger Telematics Gizmondo smart adds version (luckily Never had or saw one), modern car navigators (Android auto)) Old and modern technology can and will live in harmony just fine atleast on me. And I do not say I am right, these are just my opinions and I respect other opinions as long other respect mines and wont push their opinions down anyones throat. Like my signature has "if it works for the user"
  2. Have patience. I got radio dongle attached to pc and use RTL-SDR to listen HAM radio. Just leave your reciever to freqs allowed use by HAM radio operators on local area and at some point you will hear broadcasting. Also proper antenna helps a lot to receieve.
  3. I would say technology was better in 1990-early 2000. Todays tech is not meant to last and is tries actively prevent user repairs or modifications examples being efuses and trusted chain of boot(xbox and smartphones as example) that makes hard or near impossible replace cpu, flash or run custom firmware. Back in original xbox and nokia days peoples did custom firmwares to phones that could be flashed using cheap diy cables (nokias) or used with simple flash chip (original xbox) then anti modding/repair came "in benefit of consumers". I believe users should have freedom modify products they pay without company bricking it or getting sued. Back then was not uncommon for cars to have diagnostic trough dashboard (OBD/Early ODB2) if car had ecu and not carburator engine. Most cars had keycombo to print errors on digital mileage display (like both left wing buttons). At best car had tools and service manual included. But if could choose would roll back even to 2010 from todays tech since was less bad. How you supposed to drive Escort if need pay multiple euros per litre of petrol plus heavy emission tax? Here they push that to make peoples buy brand new cars. I do not want Tesla, I do not want modern car. My problem is not fact it is new it is fact that modern cars logs everything you do and send it to manufacture, they actively try prevent even simple repairs even as simple as changing battery may cause loss of horsepower or car refusing turn on unless override (which is not allowed by manufacture) or taking it to offical service to reset it. If I pay from something I want full control over it. Second issue is car as platform. For example BMW and Tesla disables some things like seatwarmers unless buy subscribtion even they are built in to car. Then fact EV performs horribly on our winters. We can get down to -40 degrees celcius at winter and seen plenty of EV and other modern cars side or road since wont start or EV battery run out. And having plug for engine block heater, fuel based engine block heater or EV charge stations wont solve issue since many places cannot have those just for simple reason as place got no electricity in place you visit. Oldschool Lada, Opel, Volvo or Saab will output lot of smoke and sound loud at cold start during winter but it will start and can drive and is relatively easy to service. That I know from experience with cars. Peoples should buy modern cars because they are better, reliable etc. not because they are forced to
  4. Well Logitech got bad tendency to hide or remove support from products, so wouldn't trust their requirements always rather check release notes. One example was my g110 keyboard, it showed no Windows XP as driver support list but found offical driver and suite to it from 2012 that was no longer on their site Second example was Logitech extreme 3d pro that been on sales since early 2000. On it sites it showed following requirements: Windows® 8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista 70 MB of available hard disk space it definitely does not need driver since works out of box down to Windows 98, HDD space requirement is not real since no need their utility. Originally Logitech site listed Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 as supported OS then all expect Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 disappeared and site lists no Windows 10 as supported even it uses generic drivers. I bought mine last year brand new from retail store and it was and still is on sales so yeah hard to say what os is supported sometimes by them
  5. Here is english Internet explorer 8 installer for Windows XP It is indeed Pos ready 2009 update but pos ready 2009 is same as xp so you can use Posready 2009 updates on xp. You only need This registry file. Double click it and click yes when asked. Then update will work That is not even noob question. I need work with new systems too often and feel like total noob sometimes even though got lot of industry experience . Better ask than just do and mess stuff up.
  6. I got same but reverse. I trust email client more since can force all messages to plaintext and no need load UI over internet.
  7. I said would recommend not that need to do did not notice it Any Internet explorer version was never good, but some software I use on XP uses Internet exploiter to download plugins and lack of cipher suites caused major issues (include your own downloader to code devs...). It is not to browse web rather fix possible future issues related sw using ie and needing tls 1.1 or 1.2
  8. Hello from Finland and welcome to msfn MSFN is so far only board where criticising "teh latest and greatest" os and saying uses Windows XP does not result personal insults like "you are paranoid, stupid etc" and use "latest Windows and do whatever you did on vm" and like it for that. Can talk with like minded peoples. Do not get me wrong I am fine peoples using whatever works for them but do not like when something "mandotary" I do not like is pushed down my throat (i.e: IE, Edge, touch screen phones (my good old Nokia 6600 is going strong still but it is bad apparently since "Symbian is dead" but I wont care), chrome, Windows 8, Windows 10, anything that blocks user repairs). I defend ability to choose what you use. Market should be fair and new products, operating systems and software should be used because they are better not because they are forced as only option. first of all I would recommend update Internet explorer to support TLS 1.2 and 1.1 even if wont need it since some sw uses ie to connect. To do it you need this and this guide how enable it here. Then update root certificates using this. To browse web use Mypal by Feodor2 or Newmoon browser by RoyTam. For email use Mailnews by RoyTam. It supports O2Auth, tls 1.3 and all other thunderbird 52 supports. Easiest way install RoyTam1 browser and email client is use I430VX browser installer. That thing makes is super easy and use it myself. I am running Windows XP most of time outside my work, I got RTL-SDR based radioscanner and using SDRSharp to scan frequencies, DVBViewer with Happauge WinTV solohd tv tuner (slightly modded drivers), perihepals like digital cameras, game controllers, multimedia keyboard (Logitec g110), 16:10 24" widescreen monitor (Dell ultrasharp 2407WFP 1920x1200) I am syncing my Nokia 6600 phone contacts and calendar and transferring camera pictures, recordings with pc using Nokia pc suite for 6600. I play lot of games, listen music, watch videos/movies, edit videos, edit audio (backported audacity), check email, scan radio frequencies to find interesting things, watch and record TV and manage my Esxi home server. So yeah you can do lot on XP and even run it as daily OS and be relatively secure (nothing is unbreakable but hardening helps a lot). Windows XP board on MSFN is best to ask questions if got any sounds familiar. I got plenty of pending projects and mainboards waiting chassis. For one Windows 95 pc (Slot 1 celeron 266mhz, 256mb ram, Nvidia tnt2, 20gb hdd I ended up painting one damaged and ugly cheap chassis with dark metallic car paint because looked cool. I nicknamed that computer to Opel-PC since spray used on it and because it original fans sounded like revving engine
  9. I bought 1tb wd black mobile hard drive to my 2006 laptop running Windows XP professional (HP Compaq nc6320) . Depending from use it may be needed. For example I got truckloads of movies, videos, music, games, software on mine also multiple virtual machines. I like that laptop for being "tank" (strong, thick and durable case), size of it and weight. Hard to find modern laptop that is as durable without breaking bank
  10. then how can I use samsung ssd with my Windows 98 computer . SSD or hdd wont need driver, however interface it is connected (sata, m2, msata) needs magician atleast on my experience offered drive health and ability trigger trim to ssd but modern SSD got good garbage collector built in so trim is not neccessary and crystaldiskinfo shows drive health as well
  11. good it is working for you Also in case anyone else got old machine without network card and would want use it Protoweb (like me) or just want enjoy going internet with Dial-up connection experience for nostalgia you can use virtual PPP serial modem running on raspberry pi or other linux system. It can do speeds up to 115200bps and works with standard Dial-up software. I am currently using it to browse Protoweb on my Digital Venturis 466 computer running Netscape Navigator 3 Gold on Windows 3.11 WFW. Dial-up is being handled by Trumpet Winsock. It also works natively with Windows 95 and higher built in Microsoft Dial-up networking
  12. Thanks, also feel free to join project usergroups on site for assistance or talk about protoweb, old web etc (I am on discord group).
  13. one thing that may break it is leaving system partition mounted on Windows XP and Vista. I had xp or vista messing system attributes from each others causing both unable boot before manually fixed. Easiest way to do is use mountvol command (mountvol <vista drive letter for example D:> on xp side and same on Windows Vista side (xp should be d or e: if single hdd and partition). Second and likely easier way is to open disk management>select partition with currently inactive os>right click>select change drive letter>delete drive letter assigment and click ok (cannot attach screenshot since MSFN only allows me to have 14kb screenshot for some reason, likely posted too big screenshot before) Take that precaution and it will be fine
  14. First of all I want ask few questions sound blaster emulation under MS-DOS mode to DOS games? define "more modern hardware". I want technical information about sound card, mainboard etc. Creative had driver for win9x compatible pci soundcards to emulate it, VIA audio cards got sb emulation too, fortemedia got sb emulation and ESS audio had sound blaster emulation too. So which soundcard you got now?
  15. Protoweb is classic web proxy run by volunteers. It goal is to provide range of Classic Internet and Network services for the retro computing community. Sites on service been crawled from archive.org and then reconstructed by volunteers to old glory (fixing downloads, missing images etc.). Service currently provides hundreds of classic webpages and classic ftp sites between 1996-2001. Using Protoweb does not require any extra software or registaration, you get full access to service just by changing browser proxy settings. All resources on Protoweb are free to access natively on any classic/modern browser supporting http proxies and more is being added. For more information visit at https://protoweb.org/
  16. NUSB includes english systems files replacing whatever os got. I had same issue on finnish Windows 98SE. One option is to manually replace files with right ones from extracted NUSB
  17. I got reactos currently on vm. It is not best possible on actual hw yet but impressed can run win32 sw on FOSS Windows clone
  18. or set wsus server to anything non existing on gpo. For example stupid.update.stop as wsus server name. It will error out as no connection. I used it once to stop updates on win10 to one client (was required not to update automatically at any case while still have networking)
  19. Only times I reinstalled were because hardware issues (Bad hdd as example) or because swappaed hardware and os refused play nicely on new. I used to require reinstall Windows multiplem times long ago due my limited security knowledge back and day and ended up getting all kind of nasty stuff like viruses, worms adwares (because free stuff sounded too good as kid ) before learnt more about security and stopped my download habits. Since it never had to reinstall or got serious virus attack. On other hand I need work with peoples who uses Windows 10 and need work with Windows 10 at work and it feels break after every major update. Hardware accerlation causing system crash on intel hd 4000 series chipset after update, start menu breaking, sound driver failing, network failing, system bootlooping and list goes on...this brings bad memories from Windows 98FE on 15gb quantum fireball LCT hdd. Windows 98FE on it kept hosing every week and really expected not to have same issue today, even less since OS updates hoses all up
  20. Hello from finland . Welcome to MSFN. I am "legacy" os user too and also I am Linux nerd
  21. there we go, it got 915 chipset. Have you installed inf driver for it or any other? There was 915 chipset driver somewhere for 915 chipset on web (need look it up). If it wont change thing is bug that cannot be fixed as far I know Also in future remember either quote (using button under comment) or mention with @ and user name of person you are replying to because I wont follow all topics and wont get notification from unquoted or unmentioned reply to comments
  22. "It is because tablet/toy cellphone can do everything desktop pc can and pc is dead". I hate that argument. What they even mean by everything? Scroll facebook, twitter, watch videos? Sure but how about virtualisation or software developing properly. I am afraid market will more and more shift torwards locked down toy cell phones. Too many things require one already. Even as simple as ac devices lacks option to manually control and need smartphone and app to do simple task. I have gave tablets and toy cell phones shot once and they did not pass my test (was tired of advertising baked in and lack of easy user repairs *but clearly development in Microsoft since Windows 8.0 has been tablet or other touchscreen-oritented. i really hope my workplace would do the same. I am annyoyed by windows and it preinstalled bundleware. Candy crush, xbox or other apps got no place on enterprise environment. ^this. Windows XP or 7 had their bad things (ie: IE, Product activation etc.), but they made life so much easier on enterprise environments. Microsoft Deployment toolkit, remote install, system shadow copy for shared folders, software centre, windows update server. Some of those who did not like it likely had no pain deal without them on enterprise. Also some criticise it eye candy (Windows XP luna theme aka "bozo the clown theme" and Windows 7 Aero) but atleast it can be disabled on both Windows XP and Windows 7 so can choose eyecandy (like I do) or classic style. They forgave Internet Exploder forcing and bundling, DRM issue breaking some music on Windows Vista since bug, Windows Genuine advantage breaking and rendering all Windows XP (if wga tool was installed) and vista systems as non genuine, replacing proper UI with metro which is like using Windows 1.0 again, forcing Windows 10 upgrade against user will and breaking lot stuff, Windows 10 activation servers breaking, constant OS breakups and list goes on... Peoples are too blind to see fact it is not ok.
