Latest Version of Software Running on XP
NotHereToPlayGames replied to pointertovoid's topic in Windows XP
Agreed, not big on large context menus. I prefer Directory Opus on the home computer and Q-Dir on the office computer. I've used Total Commander, XYplorer, and Explorer++ and they're all way better than Windows Explorer. DirOpus wasn't free though. I used to own an Amiga and I've been a DirOpus user ever since ('92ish?). -
Not true. Server 2003 Enterprise is a 32-bit OS and can use 32 GB max RAM. The 64-bit versions of Server 2003 Enterprise can use 1 TB max RAM. I can re-install and screencap my old 32-bit Server 2003 Enterprise if you don't believe me. Other proof can be found here -- https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2003/cc739866(v=ws.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN

My garage laptop ThinkPad that I use to tune turbo engine performance chips is a Celeron with 2 GB RAM. I call it "Silly On". Memory limit is irrelevant. If you are truly running era-correct hardware, you only have 2 to 4 GB RAM (3.5ish available) and the limit does not come into play on truly era-correct hardware. There are SOOO many things about that ThinkPad "Silly On" that makes it USELESS for anything but ECU/ECM chip mods on 80s/90s automotive "technology". People that want to play games or YouTube on a "Silly On" and argue about differences between SP1, SP2, and SP3 are just as "Silly" as that "Silly On". Besides, if the memory limit was introduced with SP2, then why are we even arguing SP2 versus SP3, shouldn't we be arguing about SP1 versus SP2 ??? You guys can argue until you're blue in the face, I'm opting to "move on".

I'm referring to performance of XP, XP SP1, XP SP2, and XP SP3. it's been well over a decade since I ran tests, but I do distinctly recall that SP3 was faster than SP2. I will attempt to get some proof over the next couple of weekends - not exactly high priority for me. But for people to say, over and over again, that SP2 is faster, but have NO DATA to back it up, that is "gut feeling" and none of us should listen to anybody's gut growling, all that tells anybody is that the gut is hungry and wants food.

The best way to think of VPNs is do you trust "them" (the owner of the VPN Server) or Google or Microsoft or Facebook or Twitter or Instagram with your "data" ??? Bearing in mind that when somebody like Google or Facebook "misuses" your data, they are fined MILLIONS. But when a VPN misuses your data, they file bankruptcy, change their name, then start a new VPN with a new name and start all over. I'm over-simplifying, of course.

I myself have never viewed Incognito Mode as a means toward "privacy". It's just a simple way to turn off all extensions. Nothing more, nothing less. You can NOT visit a web site without them knowing "who" you are. Even VPN's are "questionable" in this day and age, you simply shift one company log to another company log. ie, instead of Bing, Google, or DuckDuckGo (yes, they log your searches also!) logging your activity, the VPN logs it - perhaps even MORESO because of the criminal elements that use them thinking they are hiding from the law. The only way to block fingerprinting on the internet is to NOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET.

My Browser Builds (Part 4)
NotHereToPlayGames replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Found it. NCO impelented on May 27, 2022 so that St52 is now my official secondary browser. edit - and optional chaining was implemented on May 6, 2022, for reference. -

Although official Basilisk did not implement NCO until 2022-08-06 - https://www.basilisk-browser.org/releasenotes.shtml -
My Browser Builds (Part 4)
NotHereToPlayGames replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Ah, I dropped down to St52 2022-04-29. Telemetry removals in changelog and "probably" don't need anything newer. Haven't tested things like the infamous nullish coalescing operator and the like. -
My Browser Builds (Part 4)
NotHereToPlayGames replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
That's disappointing. I've only recently switched to St52 as a secondary web browser (as in within the last three days). So how far back of a version does not have this leak? -
I want quantitative measurements. Not "gut feeling". Newer is not always better. But nor is it always worse.

I can prove it by the weekend or so. Unless you can prove the contrary before then. My experience is that SP3 is faster than SP2. I'll grab screencaps by the weekend or so. edit - I am talking about a slipstreamed SP3. Not an install Original XP, then install SP1, then install SP2, then install SP3. But slipstream SP3 onto the original install media and install SP3 at step one.

When SP3 first came out, I remember doing weeks and weeks of performance comparisons and found SP3 to be faster than SP2, not the other way around. Mileage may vary on what hardware is actually being compared, of course. But I seem to recall that all of the technical magazines and web sites drew the same conclusion at the time, that SP3 was faster than SP2.

Do we have a frame of reference? Why would we expect him more than once a day? -
My Browser Builds (Part 4)

Zero custom themes. Third-party multi-monitor window management was hiding the Clear Private Data popup. Haven't looked at empty History popup yet because I'm finding St 52 much more powerful than BNav. -
My Browser Builds (Part 4)
NotHereToPlayGames replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Hmm... Unsure if my BNav profile became corrupted over time or not. My History popup is always EMPTY and Clear Private Data has no popup. BNav required an add-on DOM Inspector which didn't bother me too much because BNav was only ever used for ONE web site, never more than ONE web site (Google Voice instant messaging) - 360Chrome serves ALL OTHER USES for me. Since newer BNav requires a new theme/skin in order for me to ever use it, I've been comparing St52, St55, and BNav (I've ruled out NM28 due to very choppy behavior on my hardware). Thus far, I am opting for St52 as my SECONDARY instant-messaging-ONLY web browser - it cannot do what 360Chrome can do and 360Chrome remains my King (on XP). I'm using St52 with the Photonic Theme but am still tweaking to my liking. Also including Stylish 2.1.1, Tabs on Bottom 0.7.3, and Status-4-Evar Revived 2019.10.11.3. -

@roytam1 - are you aware that BNavigator's "Manage History" and "Clear Private Data" functions do not work? -
You are correct. I was an update or two behind. But again, Google Voice does not work and once that is established on my end, I do not test with any additional web sites. That one web site and that one alone is the first hurdle. If the runner trips on the first hurdle, I do not proceed further down the track.
