  1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_uncertainty_and_doubt The best protection for your system is to backup your data all the rest is bullsh1t.
  2. I can't see any difference between doing my banking with XP in 2008 and doing my banking with XP in 2018 except that I'm 10 years older. Also, I never do any kind of russian roulupdates on my computer, I disabled the securshitty center and I still don't have an anti-virus, except on demand scanning. On that 10 years old laptop, the system starts in 50 seconds and use 140 Mb of memory.
  3. I always had that trouble with any version of FF and also with Pale Moon / New Moon. It always freezes at 23 min : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1126635 It happens on YT and on any site using HTML5 videos, a workaround was to use Flash Player instead of HTML5 but that no longer works. I have an old Dell laptop with a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. It seems that not everyone have this bug, but what cause this ? The graphic card ? A power saving bug ? A buffering bug ? It's a mystery. :-P
  4. It seems that add blocking can make a browser horribly slow when using blocking lists because there's a huge number of blocking rules. That's what I found when trying Otter browser under XP.
  5. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/08/researchers-crack-open-unusually-advanced-malware-that-hid-for-5-years/ So. Who still think his computer is secured ?
  6. @roytam1, do you have an idea about this bug ? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1126635 I have it with any html5 video and with any Firefox release including New Moon and Basilisk.
  7. It's unfortunate that it is so complicated, that would be a good choice. I tried to compare FF 52 ESR and Chrome 49 using Page Speed Monitor to compare page loading time and Chrome is clearly faster than FF. Apparently it's not possible to use the extension with Pale Moon so I don't know exactly. It seems faster than FF 52 and slower than Chrome but I don't know exactly.
  8. Great !!! thanks a lot. Is it the only patch needed to build ffmpeg ? https://github.com/tumagonx/XPitory/blob/master/static_port/ffmpeg/ffmpeg-3.x.patch I thought it would be a much bigger diff. Thanks again.
  9. Microsoft, Google and others done great efforts to kill XP so that people buy new hardware and new licenses, so it decreases of course. Firefox lost users because it's a bloated crap. In one hand they say they want to make a better Internet but in reality they didn't fix some html5 bugs that exist for years and now they drop million of XP users exactly like Google does so they are not better than Google.
  10. I'm not sure but it seems that QtWeb has its own cert management like Firefox does and it seems to work very well with ECC. Unfortunately it uses WebKit and seems totally dead.
  11. I use this one http://prxbx.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=2172 with a badly written start/stop Py script I done : ProxHTTPSProxyMII.zip That's very useful for all the cloudflare hosted sites with free account.
  12. Firefox and it's 10% of users and it will probably decrease.... Chromium would be a better choice if it's possible to add ECC support like QtWeb did. But browsers are so complicated that I doubt it will happen.
  13. It works ! Thanks a lot, this is greatly appreciated and much more useful than other trollish topics. It would need more testing but at first glance it seems to work with a NVIDIA 8600M GT and last XP 32 drivers. Thanks again to you and to roytam1 for all the efforts.
  14. I done all these tests in Virtual Box. I took the total startup time, from the "start" menu of the VM to the network icon available in the task bar. It is surely longer in a VM than on a real modern machine of course. The host computer is also 10 years old. I tried also Debian 9 with a minimal LxQt and the startup time is even longer. It's 1m43s while it uses the same amount of memory than XP, about 80 MB. It seems than the kernel init is very long I don't know exactly why. A last note to say that the real host was installed in 2014 and the memory usage of XP on that real machine is 140 MB, so the memory usage grows a little bit with time apparently or maybe drivers take more memory, I don't know exactly. I use Clam AV on it, so there is no real time scanning. With Avast installed it uses 275 MB.
  15. An important difference is that XP was a very successful OS while W8 was the same failure than Vista : http://gs.statcounter.com/os-version-market-share/windows/desktop/worldwide#monthly-200901-201709 When comparing XP and W7, I found that XP starts in 40 seconds and uses 80 MB of memory, while W7 starts in 1min 20s and I couldn't find a way to have it with less than 220 MB. I disabled all services mentioned in the barebone configuration by Black Viper but no luck. 220 MB of ram seems to be the strict minimum for W7. That's why I don't use W7, because it's a bloatware, because it's ergonomy is a total catastroph and finally that super crap of .NET is now part of the system since some administration tools are written with it. Finally, about using unsupported OSes, I think there is absolutely no security at all in the computing world. For example, the fact that a browser identifies the system and the browser version in User Agents is an huge security failure and that exists with all systems and all browsers. I think security is a joke, the only security is to backup your data. Have a nice day.
  16. I think there is different audio and video stream formats available for each YT video. When using youtube-dl with the "-F" option you can get a list of all available streams and then you can download a file with the video and audio format that you want. Usually, streams are m4a, webm, mp4 or 3gp.
