  1. Welcome back to MSFN shelby! Kafan Mini-Browser and WiseVector StopX (and Avast) are already listed on page 1 of this thread, but not KMPlayer. Looks like it does support Vista, but sounds like it might be adware?
  2. KB971512 was a Platform Update component (one of four) and KB2117917 was Platform Update Supplement. I assumed he already had all the Vista updates in his collection, since he only asked about Server 2008 updates - but you’re right: those were the most important updates between SP2 and EOL. The IE9 standalone installer actually includes both of those.
  3. You should have allowed this old thread to rest in peace. Things have changed since April 2021: I no longer use Vista, Dixel is no longer active at MSFN, and TSNH posted Guide - Vista extended kernel installation which might be perfect for those “younger members” that you are concerned about. I already mentioned that in your new thread earlier today, and this will be my final post in this thread!
  4. KB4019276 was later superseded (replaced) by KB4056564, although I had no issues with the earlier update. IE9 would still be a very poor browser, but this could be helpful for any software that uses IE’s engine or relies on the OS for decryption of TLS 1.2.
  5. You want updates that are “needed” or “essential” for what purpose? If you just want to install the extended kernel, then TSNH is an authority (see his Guide - Vista extended kernel installation). However, if you are a security fanatic who believes that Windows must be “fully patched,” then I’m afraid it’s rather late to call yourself a “legacyfan.” I never discuss ESU updates released after January 2020 that were intended for enterprise customers who paid for an ESU license, but I can tell you that they are ending in January 2023. You won’t find those in greenhillmaniac’s repository, which I believe was last updated in December 2019. If I understand correctly, there will soon be no current patches for anything older than Windows 10; and Microsoft never stated that patches released in previous decades are sufficient to keep Windows secure. It is perhaps worth mentioning that Microsoft sounded an especially loud alarm about the BlueKeep vulnerability (CVE-2019-0708). It might therefore be advisable to install the update that Microsoft expressly suggested at the link. I believe the monthly rollups were cumulative, so any rollup released after May 2019 should serve just as well. For those who would rather not bother, disabling the Terminal Services service was the suggested mitigation.
  6. These are currently listed as the last versions for vanilla Vista. (This is not an extended kernel thread.)
  7. It was clear from your screenshot showing Windows 6.1 being spoofed that you have Extended Kernel. This particular thread was never about software that works with Extended Kernel, but good to know it solves Notepad++ compatibility.
  8. Welcome to MSFN Scarf32! Your screenshot of the DEP tab indicates that DEP is disabled. I would suggest looking at problem reports for Spotify to see if they are still BEX or instead APPCRASH. However, there was another report earlier this year from an extended kernel user who could not successfully disable DEP (see this thread at another forum), so this might be an issue with the extended kernel that only @win32 could address. (Edit: solved) It seems likely that Spotify was already crashing when it caused a buffer overflow triggering DEP. If another member is successfully using Spotify, I hope they will reply to offer you some advice.
  9. And that does not prevent you from installing KB4493730, or do you not bother with the SSU at all? Assuming he downloaded the x64 version, I think he has already installed a subsequent SSU.
  10. You’ve been a member since April 2020, so it’s surprising that you would expect Windows Update to work on Vista. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/windows-update-sha-1-based-endpoints-discontinued-for-older-windows-devices-10b58bd9-5ba2-b23d-498b-139ce5c709af You could use the same method of installing updates that you used for your extended kernel system, whatever that was.
  11. First of all, KB4493730 was a servicing stack update released in April 2019. “Microsoft strongly recommends you always install the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating before installing” later updates. My guess is that you did not follow Microsoft’s recommendation and have already installed KB4474419 (SHA-2) and perhaps others. Have you installed KB4517134? That was another servicing stack update released in September 2019 that replaced KB4493730, however it was signed with SHA-2 exclusively. If you have it, or are able to install it, then you are probably OK (I’m not really sure).
  12. True, but if anyone feels that their vintage Vista system is incomplete without Flash Player, there’s a thread in the Windows XP forum: https://msfn.org/board/topic/182654-adobe-flash-shockwave-and-oracle-java-on-xp-part-2/ The last official version without a time bomb was reportedly 32.0.0.371.
  13. Reviewing this section, I noticed that Emsisoft and McAfee are still listed, the former with a notation that definition updates ended in 2016. As VistaLover pointed out in a March 31, 2021 post, definition updates for the legacy versions of McAfee ended January 1 of last year. Of course he provided an official link for this bad news.
  14. You’re answering a question that I asked 18 months ago!? Thanks. It’s funny that Imacri couldn’t resist the compulsion to ask you a question that was already answered in this thread. Imacri never installed any Server 2008 updates and formerly warned others against it, but “no SHA-2 support” now means “no new software.” You sure do change your screen name often. Thanks again!
  15. Hello again. The instructions in the first post should work for Vista x86, but since you are running Vista x64, you need to make 2 more registry changes as mentioned here: https://msfn.org/board/topic/177994-tls-1112-and-vista-issue-no-options/?do=findComment&comment=1157010
  16. Great work, but Webroot might warrant more attention. Changes for Consumer PC Agent Version 9.0.31.84 (Released September 28, 2021) state that it was “the final build provided for Vista systems.” I found no official download link, but saw a report at Reddit that this build broke Intel NIC drivers, so one version earlier might be more recommendable. In the replies below PC Agent Version 9.0.30.75, TripleHelix posted a download link. (Unfortunately my old Vista hardware is kaput. ) I must mention and thank @CameronSM36 who posted March 25, 2021 that he was successfully using Webroot 9.0.29.62 on Vista (both with and without extended kernel). If he is still using Webroot on Vista or can confirm the last version he was able to use, then I hope he will post!
  17. The explanation might be that the updates now require SHA-2 support edit: but see VistaLover’s post on the next page.
  18. Sorry to hear about ESET. Avast ended support for XP and Vista 4 years ago, but version 18.8 still receives definition updates. For more information and official download links: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=220639.0
  19. Thank you VistaLover. Someone just asked about “SpeedTest App” in another thread. Hopefully @WinClient5270 can revise his list!
  20. Welcome to MSFN, uTorrent Classic reportedly still supports Windows XP and Vista. https://www.utorrent.com/desktop/
  21. Hello old friend! You should probably specify the update level of your Vista VM. There may be legacy software that worked fine on build 6002 patched to April 2017, but was broken by 6003 (Microsoft predicted as much in 2019). There might be newer software that depends on SHA-2 support that wasn’t available for 6002. If a program relied on Internet Explorer’s engine, then support for TLS 1.2 (not available in April 2017 but predating the build number change) might be necessary. The possibilities are bewildering and perfection might be unobtainable, but I know you will do a good job!
