¿¿It's supposed to detect what's already installed on disk(according to docs) and not force an overinstall of something?? This to boot when coming on board a system already loaded with Opera, & a couple Netscape versions...... -
Hi hoppy: Are you getting this message: The CD you provided is the wrong CD. Please insert the Windows XP XXXXXXX CD into your CD-ROM drive? Can you click OK anyways... let that process fail, then it may prompt you to give a location? (You would then browse to the folder location on the cd... As opposed to doing cancel or retry!-- Those may not give you option to select a location) If not, maybe the reg change mentioned here: http://www.petri.co.il/change_default_loca...i386_folder.htm or these other related changes mentioned in below discuss: C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles in: KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup value: ServicePackSourcePath value: ServicePackCachePath http://www.alegsa.com.ar/Visitas/i62/Syste...%20sp1%20cd.php this less likely: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.as...4&enterthread=y Good Luck.

Someone is lying here. There shouldn't be any debate on that one: I've been part of extensive database & neural network/AI tests. For strict write-to-disk functions, the 9x platform handily beats the pants off its NT cousins-- & the ratio difference is not percentage-wise, but multiple times. (With all possible optimized settings & unnecessary processes disabled, 512mb ram on 9x, 2gb on nt)98 is tops, ME slips behind a notch--- then it's a long way back to Longhorn, which edges out win2k, which edges out winxp.(win23k not tested). Amd handily beats Intel in this area. The field levels out when apps are recomplied to load and work in memory as much as possible. Final tests will be performed later this year. -

"Unofficial True 32bit Visual Interface Upgrade for Win9x"News Flash! Computer User Group trumps Microsoft at their own game: adding a slew of improvements to Windows, that have long & wide been clamored for-- but that Microsoft has been unable and/or unwilling to make!!!! An unlikely & motley crew of computer enthusiasts, most of whom spend the bulk of their time speeding up the performace of the various Windows Operating Systems, shoring up their inherent weaknesses-- AND as well helping the public resolve their problems with numerous Windows bugs thru free tech support...... have re-tooled Windows to run much faster, and have plugged up many of its security vulnerabilities, all while simultaneously adding key functionalities missing from the Operating System. Excerpt from a CNN interview last week with Paula Zahn: Now, guys what led you to do all this? Well, Paula-- we have just grown weary over the years of being spoon-fed one version of an Operating System, with someone else's idea of what components should be inside it-- and to boot they often don't mesh harmoniously-- thus necessitating frequent computer restarts: each of several minutes duration-- its not like flipping your tv On/Off without skipping a beat. We have been asking for decades now, for many changes made & components added-- all to liitle or no avail. HHmm, is what you have said really true, and if so is it that serious? My computer at home rarely breaks down. To address your first question: the internet is chock full of forums & independent software distributors dedicated to the sole purpose of correcting weak Windows components & adding missing ones. Those who will be using their computer to perform significant work, usually spend days after initially installing Windows, changing settings, replacing weak components, and adding missing ones. Just to even be able to have a computer system on & connected to the Internet for hours at a time requires a Herculean preparation effort: you're in the news business, you must see the daily reports of computer security problems! Well-- Sorry to interrupt you Paula-- to answer the second part of your question: assuming that what you do with your computer at home is to turn it on, check some email, maybe type a memo for work, click on an ad or two, then turn it off... that's like claiming your car purrs like a kitten when all you do is occasionaly drive it at residential speed to your corner deli. What about those who have to race over our nation's highways for hours at a time each day, often through inclement weather and/or subpar surfaces? So what is your main purpose or goal in all this? Paula, what we have been postulating essentially is this: How would you like if 90% of all cars in America were one entity-- imagine most folks buying say, a Ford Pinto, and you decide you--actually, let's backtrack and change buy to Lease-- we don't buy Windows, it is not ours to do with as we wish, we only lease its use from Micros-- What, come again? Yes, Paula: stated right on the licensing agreement-- and one is not free to: after having paid the not so low price, do with it as one wants-- recompile it, change computers and reinstall-- You mean-- Yes, Paula: imagine if you go to Blockbuster and buy a movie-- but you wouldn't be allowed to alter / apply special effects to it once you got home, and if you were unlucky enough to have your tv break down: that it would be illegal to watch that movie on your new tv-- you'd need to buy a new copy to go with your new tv.... and what's so outrageous about this is that we're not talking a few dollars' price of a movie, but a few hundred for a new OS. To continue our Pinto story: they've decided that is the type of car useful to the largest number of folks. Those in rural areas & harsher climes clamor for a different model-- say a Blazer-- or at least options for off-road tires, windshield wipers, rear heated windows, independent suspension, etc.-- all which are turned down as being cost-prohibitive because not in wide demand by the majority of users. Additionally, the cars come from the factory with their speed limits capped at 45mph(through various engine & system caps) to minimize non-expert drivers damaging their cars. This means, that right off the bat, many customers have to spend more than the initial purchase price re-outfitting their car, as well as considerable time re-adjusting various settings-- all this in a gray area as far as 100% legality. On top of all this, every two years the Pinto gets upgraded to a GrandAm, then a LeSabre, then a Park Avenue...... We're running out of time-- we've got about 30 seconds left. Can you quickly sum up what you are doing to change this status quo? We've cobbled together the best parts of the various latest 'models' of Windows to basically eliminate most weaknesses & utilize most strong points of each. We've created a Windows 'auto' that should win most road races against the original / latest factory models. We've eliminated a lot of the causes for random engine shutdowns, & steering lockups, we've increased performance by uncapping some system limits such as physical ram amount maximums & internet cruising speeds, etc. And to top this off, we've also worked up the most superior exterior & paint job ever seen on a Windows OS with the: "Unofficial True 32bit Visual Interface Upgrade for Win9x", surpassing that of even WinXP's-- which is not entirely 32bit, as widely claimed. We're labeling our finished product: Windows 98SE2ME2XPto2K3 Sounds like you have a winner on your hands guys. Now, what could you tell our worldwide audience to back up your performance claims-- some may be wondering if your speeds function as claimed, and even whether stability has not degraded further as a result? Paula, we invite the public at large to submit any program they have whatsoever. We will conduct performance & longetivity tests on identical brand new computer models: one will have the very latest Windows release, the other one our 98SE2ME2XPto2K3 version-- we do reserve the right to tweak our system in any way we see fit. We will demonstrate how some tasks can run 10-20 times faster on our custom Windows systems. Well, we'll be looking forward to that in the coming days & weeks-- maybe we can even have you back to conduct some trials Live! On CNN! Paula, we look forward to that and to be of service to the general public: it will mean an awful lot to us to know we have improved the daily lives & work experience for so many folks. Thanks guys. That about does it here at the studio for us today, we'll be turning it over to Bill Hemmer on location as he reports on this year's Super Bowl pre-festivities. Good Morning, Bill! Good Morming, Paula! I was listening in-- that is some group you just had on! Taking on an American behemoth like that. Yes, we'll be watching to see what develops. Courageous bunch of guys. So, Bill have you got a prediction for us on the game? End of transcript. Spread the gospel folks.......... and check back here often for further developments. -
Would someone care to expound on the max possible / mappable memory use in win9x-- little to none dos used.... OR the converse: if is used & in conjunction w. freedos udma enabled.... Vis a vis the total amount of / interplay of all these: max ram w/ max vcache size limit w/ max swapfile size limit w/ max agp aperture size limit w/ max ramdisk size limit.... emmexclude a significant effect on all this?.... 1.5GB ram possible & does that lower corresponging amount limit of other mem size settings..... what amount'd be sitting unused for practical purposes.... Feel free to be as detailed/specific as you wish..... Thanks, kiddos!

Unfortunately, win 9x, nt, 2k(but not 2k3) will be as obsolete as Dos when Longhorn becomes mainstream.... though maybe that will get delayed a few years, depending on stability / missed deadlines... -
People, using media center
horsecharles replied to Substance's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
BUMP.... i don't know why either-- it sure don't help to have such a small user base, since it wasn't publicly released(retail)... I've only seen obvious advice to problems re Media Center & other apps/utilities: 1. overinstall(in your case your video apps/drivers)-- i would singly install all .inf files before running regular setup.exe files... 2. re-register all pertinent libraries(because some library's not registered).. this would be some job-- I would use X-teq Com Register Ex so you can quickly right-click-register your dll, ocx, exe files. And i don't know if installing an updated codec pack would help any-- it can't hurt: http://www.codecguide.com/features_mega.htm Good Luck. -
Can some1 Recommand Dvd software tha can play.....
horsecharles replied to kurt476's topic in The Media Hub
kurt476: you can get this: http://www.codecguide.com/features_mega.htm During install, i would allow it to install all possible codecs.... the players it's up to you to only install that Media Player Classic, or others to compare. What's great here is that non-bloated, non-privacy violating, & just-as-good-if-not-better versions of the major players(Real, WMP, Quick) are installed... plus full versions of others like BS, DivX, etc. As Bonkers[ says, you can do all your viewing/listening w/ his suggestion. IF/AS you get more involved, you can compare for yourself others. Good Luck. -
Kind of hard to follow... what you tried exactly that didn't work?

FYI I'd stated on here somewhere that the install ofK-Lite Mega Codec Pack(btw the best codec pak in the universe removed some Real Player codecs....well, wrong Media Player 6.4 breath! That was caused by an in-place re-install of Real Player(same version); which was caused by Firefox: as y'all know, the new Firefox v1 does not take separate plugins anymore, rather it detects already-installed whole versions of Players like Macromedia, etc. & uses those-- supposedly, supposedly: it doesn't detect all; and when this occurs, the only fix is to let it download the whole program and install it-- as in the case of Real Player that then gets re-installed over itself. Why it has to delete its own plugins, & to boot not give notice nor prompt to download/update plugins, go figure! btw Firefox did detect WMP & Flash, but not Real or Shockwave.. Quicktime & Adobe-- don't remember for sure... I think they were detected ok. OK, done ramblin'.........

AAAYYY, I know you're not twakin' to me, but just in case, i did mean that your solution was better... badabing, badabang......

thanks for the update... btw please be careful: http://www.2-spyware.com/file-mps-exe.html you may want to use that site to remove any other components.

Hi, I would use this solution: http://www.pctechnicians.ca/help/delxpw2k.html And backup all your crucial stuff, format & reinstall... rather than merge partitions: you'd need a program such as Partition Magic, Paragon, etc., etc.... btw Merging partitions is not always totally failsafe-- though it should be. Assuming of course, that win2k is on C, and winxp is on a subsequent partition. If by chance XP is on C, then i would recommend that you NOT partition(but do format it before use), and instead migrate with TweaUI all your documents, data, settings, pictures, desktop, start, sendto, music, etc. folders; and use your multimedia, office, adobe apps to change the default data folder locations. Your system will be faster, more secure: backups & data will be safe in case the OS & or its partition gets thrashed beyond repair... good luck.

Wow, puntoMX, i need to pay attention! With today's big hard drives i don't even look at directory sizes anymore-- but yes to the awesome speed difference....

Hi, Xoobee... is this of any use to you? Installing Outlook 2003 Before Office ... Note: Installing Outlook 2003 without Office 2003 limits Outlook functionality in the following ways: Users cannot use WordMail as their Outlook editor. Users cannot use the MailMerge feature. The File | Send to | Mail Recipient capability is not available. Minor problems can occur with the Office Assistant— for example, when one Office appplication turns the Assistant on, and another one turns it off.

horsecharles replied to un4given1's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I don't disagree with what you've said at all: Fredledingue Basic problem's they wanted to be all things to all systems: made XP compatible right off the bat with "unadvanced systems"-- you can run it, according to specs, on any processor 266mhz, 64 mb ram-- well, those old P1/2/3 systems did not support dma, etc., etc. So right off the bat one has to go in an enable stuff like that, tweak pagefile / internet registry settings, etc.; and a lot of the dialogs & addons are really made for noobs like you say-- take the inferior firewall-- they'd've been better off adding stuff to IE/OE like a popup blocker, spyguard, spamblocker, etc. But the brutes who designed it, also wanted it to work in a heavy corporate environment for experienced users-- and tons of services like file indexing, fast user switching, restore, etc. weigh it down so much-- I use the nLite & the AutoPatcher to auto-fix/tweak/trim.... remove ½ a GB of stuff... XP is a perfect example of why open source is so useful-- this OS should give the install option to create multiple partitions & lay itself out in better fashion(for faster performance & less data loss in case of problems), AND the option to double-boot itself with another lighter/minimized NT version(that allows web access to help obtain fixes)...the Recovery Console-- needs more diagnostic utilities like a partition mgr/creator, deleted file recovery, etc., etc...... A simple backup service that periodically mirrored a few key things like mail, data, documents would be so much more useful than the bloated system restore that can still lose all one's data... And on, and on....... -
Installed: Updated unofficial Windows NT4/98/ME HTML Help v1.41(thank you MDGx..... no problems, issues.... everything ok.
-
Yes, nlite's awesome... ½ GB of bloat-- how 'bout that? Firefox still needs a smidgen or two work to be used at all sites.... and the toolbars still take too much space/can't be squeezed together as IE's-- of course, they do provide a slew of extra functionality in exchange..... If adaware/spybot-- free to boot, are not that good, then most others are rotten caca in comparison..... Actually, most AV is fairly useless, IMO....

Which Windows Media Player do you use?
horsecharles replied to Marztabator's topic in Software Hangout
Not all, & not with the same degree of performace, of the wmp updates re security & performance have been provided to 9 as to 10. For those stuck on 9 due to 98/ME OS version, see here at msfn member MDGx's site for how to improve your current version-- btw it hasn't been finalized yet, nor made into one executable program, but you can perform those changes now: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S and scroll down to: NEW: ADD WINDOWS XP SP2 FUNCTIONALITY this will upgrade your WMP 9 to build 9.00.00.3250--higher than your highest .2980 current version & only released for winXPSP2, and you will have a lot of wmp10 XPSP2 security patches/updated codecs in use. AND........... WMP9 MP3 SUPPORT FROM WMP10 by msfn member miko Be careful, backup first(turn off restore/file protection/security apps during operation, be aware that this disables any/all MS tech support rights, and if you want to wait, one standalone installable/uninstallable single app is on the way. And if you're going to do that, the rest of the enchilada is to add to 98 some better features found in ME, XP, 2K3: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S and performed in one app: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=37302 Do install first msfn member Gape's Unofficial Win98 Service Pack 2 to have all your other files properly updated first, and because it provides some needed tweaks, fixes some other settings(for instance, get around 512mb RAM limit).
