It has been 7 years since Win98 was released
horsecharles replied to un4given1's topic in Windows 9x/ME
We're basically saying the same thing. Plus, you have different needs with your multimedia work & other corporate work-- you're good to at least try a 64-bit system separately right now-- to get a head start-- I don't think you were so wrong to hold out on 95, and are dead-on re 98: both got beta-rush-released late in their namesake year, & took another half-year or more to issue their stable(sic) release... not as bad with 95-- windows 97 & 2000 would've been more fitting names. Shouldda jumped on 2K, ehh? At least you have the ME disk-- you can now apply MDGx's 98toME routine... Windows 95--- for years i had a cheapass friend(he makes a lot of money) who stayed with it through XP's release: kept pestering everyone incessantly to help him with it & it's limited functionality-- "maybe if i add another 16mb ram: but it's so expensive!"... what a hump..... I just haven't had stability problems with 98-- on myriad systems..... In fact, i set up a dual-boot system for someone's new computer last year: dual-lan gigabyte / w/ a promise raid setup: 98 & 2k. For all the concern re drivers for 98-- everything went flawlessly, but 2k barfed: pro, server, 2003, etc. would only start w/ the dual lan disabled. So, XP came to the rescue!! You likely disagree, but I don't know that XP's proven it's a finished work-- & with Longhorn coming, it likely will never be.... Multi-boot & multiple hard disks is what i say--- for crucial work like yours i would want that safety net / immediate access / continue working.... Heck, let's just get a Sparc running Solaris.... -
edit: started this before other responses came out! Welcome, duecekd! Good for you! Neither do i-- must be a Republican / real men don't eat quiche thing.I'm one of the least-knowledgeable members here, however-- i do multi-boot & tweak quite a bit. Let me guess: you're not using XP's bootloader. Simple answer: i refer you to: MSFN Member Par Excellence(pardon my French) MDGx Boot Tweaker Section Maybe this one first: http://www.angelfire.com/wizard2/hkeylocal/boot.htm or this one: http://www.penguin.cz/~mhi/mbtmgr/ though there are many good ones out there. Since you already have both of your systems already established-- up and running... I would not recommend changing muchelse -- it can be risky: might, might cause some headaches; leave well enough alone. There's a ton of stuff that could be done( to save space, speed up performance, have all your work & links in one place no matter what OS you work in-- won't have to look for any of it) if you were say, just about to install one of the OS. I don't like re-partitioning / re-arranging stuff when two OS have no obvious problems. Others may disagree. Otherwise: we can have several partitions on each disk, use only one swapfile for both OS shared-- migrated to its own partition at the beginning of the least-seldom used disk, have both OS in separate partitions in one disk, data & programs in separate partitions of another disk, combine/share a slew of folders: email, data, music, documents, favorites, download, etc., etc. could even share Program Files(programs) if you wanted to... The sky's the limit-- i personally prefer using 3-4 hard disks, i then burn both OS discs to other locations & setup a regular backup/restore routine. I set up a system for one person, where if a whole hard disk-- even two, conked out, no data would be lost / he'd be up & running in no time... & wouldn't spend needless time fussing with those chores either. I don't think it'd make sense to start moving things around; but if you're interested in that route, i have website links, guides & charts I've posted before, along with helpful apps to facilitate the changes...there are considerations, if you're sharing stuff-- like cluster size settings & so on-- it can be a project... then again, you can take it even further by adding Linux....you can have quite a bit of fun with the whole thing. As always, other illustrious members here may have different, better, more numerous suggestions.... you won't be lacking for help in whatever you wish to accomplish with your system. All the best to you.

As Johnny Carson would say,"Wrong, Microsoft- breath!" I already told you i use all OS-- some more than others-- I can tweak XP until the cows come home if you wish: tweak pagefile sizes & partition location, enable udma, tweak dns cache & page rendering, turn off file indexing, have no fast-user switching on, no remote help, disable/turn down visual effects / themes service, no auto update... on & on ad nauseum....... & i'm in no hurry to upgrade the win9x-- of course, that will change / is gradually changing as more and more program versions can only run on nt platform.... give it time.........yet..... i have some neural / database programs that run multiple times faster on fat32 win98 than on ntfs platform & the 64-bit platform too(of course, they're not compiled for either)... Plus, when i occasionaly use office or photoshop, XP hasn't done it appreciably faster: its not like i'm clinging to Dos instead of Windows..... and btw the first versions of Windows didn't do anything any better-- perhaps worse actually-- than Dos, if you'll remember........ I don't know what else to tell you: I don't use the computer as a game console, nor as a tv / jukebox.... and i don't do big, collaborative work projects at a mega-corporation.... I do use the computer for totally free telephone service with a real telephone number(not one of those 15 digit web ones either)-- actually have several numbers in different countries-- all free: ditched my telco...... so don't be afraid of VOIP-- ditch your phone co.! I didn't climb on any soapbox to preach, only answered a request for opinions... -
before you resort to format, this is what i did: assuming XP, run sfc /scannow.... next step'd be to run autopatcherxp-- allowing it to replace all files when it prompts you.... if that doesn't do it: remove ie with xplite, then reinstall IE / autopatcherxp-- i don't remember if the autopatcher installed IE or if i had to install IE before... that will take care of any corrupted file... if you wish to save potential time, skip straight to removing IE with xplite... set your homepage to a some fast, simple site & drag your previous homepage link to your links bar.... install treewalk/bind: http://ntcanuck.com/downloads.htm get cablenut & its update(very important the update & only use the files from the Update folder-- you have to browse/scroll to it w/ file/open): http://www.cablenut.com/ at this page: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php get: http://www.speedguide.net/files/sg_webtweak_2k.zip (page rendering) and XP/2K DNS Cache Fix (eliminate stalls / freezes issue) if on dsl, this is the best ppp client: http://www.raspppoe.com/ , next is your isp's(though probably bloated), worst is winxp's native one. some speedups for firefox: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1299854/posts good luck......

even if he's a total newbie, some relative may clue him on someone using it-- he can then sleuth the data and/or his neighbors to try and guess who: much as how you know your immediate neighbors don't have wireless...... I personally would hate to have hanging over my head that someone could find me out-- no matter how unlikely.......

Is Firefox & Thunderbird better than IE & Outlook?
horsecharles replied to m8E's topic in Networks and the Internet
m8E: Oh, we're on the same boat as far as proxies! And you answered the questions satisfactorily: i didn't know whether you had broadband, a router, connected directly with the one computer or sharing a connection, etc. So, is it safe to assume you didn't try to set up any proxy, such as for anonymous surfing, or from your isp etc.? In that case, you should select direct connection like so: http://www.bit.net.au/support/firefox_quick.html or you may have an isp like this one, at the bottom is firefox config: http://www.metropipe.net/SupportDocumentationWin.shtml It would help to know what your connection settings dialog looks like, and/or your isp...... ??. -
I second firefoxthebomb, if not more ram(get 133mhz, junk your current one & just get two 256 or better 512 sticks, enable the 133 bus speed in your bios).... also, a newer/faster hard disk(you shan't have to pay more than 50 cents a GB for an 8mb cache / 7200 rpm)-- think strongly about double-booting.... AND before you upgrade, it's very important to set your cluster size to 4K: EVEN if you plan to stay on fat32, EVEN if you plan to format & convert to NTFS-- there are many benefits to doing this. Once you install xp, go to BlackViper or other such site for tweaks: turn off file indexing, the native firewall, enable dma/udma(in windows, in bios, in device manager / properties for each fixed & removable drive), etc. here's the dns cache fix for xp: http://www.speedguide.net/files/winxp_dnscache.zip If you haven't done so already, go to Intel site and download the Intel Application Accelerator for your chipset type. Apply the Autopatcher for all the updates, ms & others' power toys, & a bunch of needed system tweaks & settings changes-- all in one shot. Be aware that there are specials for $2-300 after coupons / rebates for a top Athlon system--- it may not make sense to sink so much into your used car, when... Good luck, let us know if you have further questions.......

Exactly... MS has a bunch of downloads w/ guides for remote-connecting / accessing 2k/xp server domains, tunneling vpn's, etc. in 98 & ME.... ok, so one may not have every single last feature & security benefit, but it suffices fairly adequately. At the point it becomes a shortcoming for one's work, one's salary / company budget can well afford pretty much any os, software, hardware needed several times over-- thus rendering this topic moot: at that point XP or other MS OS would be too limiting, so custom apps costing thousands are at one's disposal(as well pricey tech support-- wouldn't spend time on this forum for example), one's pc may have 2-4 gb ram, multiple SCSI disks, possibly in RAID array.... brings up a similar analogy: -- why don't we all get scsi drives then? Because heavy-duty / specialized work may justify spending a multiple of several times for the privilege of single or low-double digit % performance increase.... Value is in the eye of each individual user, but there's no big tech / performance leap from a tweaked 98 like we have-- to winxp, as with dos/win3 to win98-- or as there will be between 2k/xp to a stable and established Longhorn(widespread apps for the architecture). A casual user is different-- they need more compatibility & have less time to spend tweaking & diddling-- so let them get XP, though it itself still needs a lot of adjusting & fixing(BlackViper, autopatcher, ntlite, xplite anyone?). Peace..... -

Hi, Welcome. And you've already tried using it, inserting something does not then make it appear in Mycomputer w/ a letter assigned......... You've right-clicked it in device manager / properties for some way/setting to assign it a letter......you've tried switching slots if possible..... you've already hit windows update/installed its usb supplement: http://www.compucheap.com/dl/usb.zip Basic troubleshooter towards the bottom, for a random brand & type(correct way to insert, yadah): http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:CjE06...+a+letter&hl=en and here: http://www.iomega.com/support/manuals/foto...t.html#NoLetter let us know........

It's also the reason why i like buying hard drives in pairs-- years down the road if/when one goes, i can always remove circuit board, swap with its twin, and hopefully recover whatever missed the backup.... -
Sorry, kind of re-inventing the wheel for you, Cooler13? I was wondering why that wouldn't've been in the cd.......... I get you, ms no makee 2.0 drivers for 98/ME.... Since we're on the 98tome kick, i wonder if using ME's drivers helps or hurts-- driversguide has this file containing all the ME usb drivers from install disk: http://www.usb-drivers.com/drivers/44/44514.htm Length Date Time Name -------- ---- ---- ---- 11024 06-08-00 17:00 USB8023.SYS 49872 06-08-00 17:00 USBAUDIO.SYS 6608 06-08-00 17:00 USBAUTH.SYS 12944 06-08-00 17:00 USBCAMD.SYS 24304 06-08-00 17:00 USBCAMD2.SYS 18288 06-08-00 17:00 USBCCGP.SYS 22928 06-08-00 17:00 USBD.SYS 41904 06-08-00 17:00 USBHUB.SYS 15152 06-08-00 17:00 USBINTEL.SYS 28672 06-08-00 17:00 USBMON.DLL 4861 06-08-00 17:00 USBMPHLP.PDR 7136 06-08-00 17:00 USBNTMAP.SYS 22640 06-08-00 17:00 USBPRINT.SYS 14000 06-08-00 17:00 USBSCAN.SYS 22208 06-08-00 17:00 USBSER.SYS 21040 06-08-00 17:00 USBSTOR.SYS 147456 06-08-00 17:00 USBUI.DLL -------- ------- 471037 17 files Life sucks intensely & interminably............and then we die.....

Thank you kindly, MDGx! I've never seen such a command: Log Here's my winboot.ini--- err, msdos.sys file: (folks, i use his winboot/msdos tip: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip16.htm#WBINI) [Paths] WinDir=C:\WINDOWS WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS HostWinBootDrv=C [Options] BootDelay=0 BootMulti=1 BootGUI=1 DoubleBuffer=1 AutoScan=1 SystemReg=1 WinVer=4.10.2222 BootMenu=1 ;below one was Log=, i've added the 'o' Logo=0 BootMenuDefault=1 BootMenuDelay=4 BootKeys=1 BootWarn=0 Network=1 DisableLog=0 Thanks again GAPE: ok, the original animated logo's back-- thought you meant a different animated logo. Thank you too!

BTW are you getting any beeping codes on bootup? Check/toggle your hibernate / suspend settings & use your manufacturer's instructs for how to get rid of a possibly corrupted hibernate file. For example, these are Dell's: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...rs.htm#recreate These are some common ones btw: Amizvsus.pmf • Save2dsk.bin • PM_hiber.bin • Hibrn8.dat • Saveto.dsk • Toshiber.dat Try disabling in your bios the anti-vir setting, sometimes that causes problems. Then run a virus check on your MBR with your regular AV program. One of these could be going on the fritz: Bios / cmos chip, memory, hard drive, psu... Fans all ok, esp the one for your processor? Ditto Temps?

speeding up 98se with no more than 32mb ram
horsecharles replied to cozetti's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I'd do the sleek workaround recommended there-- AND if you have an old win95 disc, you can swap shells as suggested onsite--I have not tried it actually, but it may help a lot in your case. If you don't have win95, i'm sure it won't cause too much hand-wringing at MS if someone sends you their w95 shell files. The program's free, ýou won't hurt anything & can return to former state. I would also get rid of as much additional windows setup stuff as possible that 98lite didn't remove(control panel-add/remove programs-windows setup-details)-- themes, wallpaper, etc. For your present desktop theme, go thru the list of each item like active / inactive title bar, etc. and for the font setting of each item, change all different-color(likely white) ones to black-- you'll also need to lighten some background colors, change others-- in order to be able to subsequently read captions clearly. Go into control panel / sounds and select no sound for everything. What are you playing your dvd's with? If hopefully you stick with wmp 6.4(or the third-party media player classic), MDDGx at his site has a tip to enable dvd play with it. For the other main such apps, use the real & quicktime Alternatives-- these codec pack will install those: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Mega_...ck/1080441198/1 Maybe if you use the older Adaptec or Roxio burner/udf programs rather than any more modern ones, disable auto-detect & auto-play in TweakUI & burner app, also disable it and as much as possible in Startup-- maybe with this app: http://www.friendlynetguide.com/downloads/startman10396.exe Nix active desktop... In control panel-system-performance- go into file system & graphics: toggle settings there for the cdrom, removable disk, hard disk read-ahead, & hardware acceleration. With an app like cacheman(but don't let it auto-start auto-run): http://download.outertech.com/file.php?&PH...033&file=local9 you can optimize some settings such as cluster size, etc. AND it's going to install a recover-memory shortcut on your desktop: drag it down to your quicklaunch bar for when your system runs low on resources: at least you'll be able to recover enough to save work in progress, shut down apps & reboot. Or, for this one task alone, MDGx recommends this one: http://www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/ Good luck. -

IcemanND: Sounds like you don't know well, socialize.... how 'bout offering him occasional tech support in exchange for officially allowing you in, while you help secure him a bit... This way, some techie relative comes over & sets them straight, won't affect you.. Or maybe he doesn't need securing: is the area fairly isolated, thus little probable threat... or signal can reach any nearby commercial area....

prathapml: here's my office 2k3 scoop: I installed Publisher 2003 oem version on a really old p3-500 win98se, which btw already contained either Office 97 or 2K. No install hacks, no tricks. I was also able to update it at MS Office update. That machine i do not have anymore. I just tried office2003 on the current 98(amd) that has no other office installed & sure enough, what you say applies: no cigar. The other office installs i have are on other OS & machines. Maybe other of the standalone apps will install(wish i had those separate to try)-- guess i ASSumed wrong for the whole Office suite...................... -
Yes, i like Kerio. Good thing you found that-- good point: checking firewall with those type of problems.....

wow, i've never seen that-- w/ netscape either. Usually i can manage to screw up IE so it can't connect, but the other browsers have no problems. During install, i did select the option to use/retrieve current connection settings(can't remember clearly).... Try Control panel / internet options / connections / lan settings / ........ what isp, type of connection, & hardware do you use to connect? -
