Hello, probably worst problem with using of Windows 98 SE which i have System protection boot error. Its often also connected with this message: While initializing device CONFIGMG From my experience is caused by HW changes within existing installation.. i cant say hat for 100% of situation, but at least almost everytime.. when i make clean install with same HW, it works fine. Sometimes helps to boot in safe mode and remove old not more presented HW within Device manager (Windows 98 for some reason same as Win XP keeps it hidden here even aften HW is removed), sometime i cant even boot into safe mode, because of this error. Main Quetion are simple, how to avoid this error, otherwise that just dont try too much hardware, or to do lots of reinstalling? 1) Which logs to check what is wrong and how to fix it? 2) Which rLoew patches could help with it etc? 3) When i have same device multiple times within Safe mode - which one is newest and oldest, that on top or at the bottom of list? 4) What next could help? There are some particular windows updates to help with it? Some explanations, why its happening.. There also info that this problem could be generated by Iomega driver on parallel port and how to solve it - its not my case of course. What is know that could help.. A) remove no more present HW from Device manager from safe mode? b) Remove drivers for no more present HW through Add / Remove programs wizzard.. b) Use System Internals Autorunns - 8.63 and remove all drivers and start up items (leftovers) for no more present HW.. c) System reset could help (thx schwups)- At DOS Prompt (F5) change direction from A: to C:. Type: C:\windows\Command\scanreg /restore , and choose a backup. There are five backups by default listed by date. A backup is user.dat, system.dat and system files like system.ini and win.ini. It's possible to add more by scanreg.ini. I would like to make some step by step guide, hint list or something like that and keep main info within this post.

Hello, i wonder if someone know if Geforce 6xxx PCI-E are working with any other driver than unofficial 82.xx drivers? Because regarding inf files.. There is support of Geforce 6xxx from 61.xx driver above.. But this list could be valid for AGP cards only.. So question is maded someone some Geforce 5 / 6 PCI-E cards within Windows 98 Se with any other than unofficial 82.xx driver? Does matters that drivers is originally only for AGP cards? Why make it matter? 1) 82.xx driver is from my experience problematic in general from games compatibility point of view.. its not bad, but it could be better. Or maybe they tried to make it more compatible / stable for price of lesser performance.. I dunno.

I tested files with other install they are working fine, .Net framework 2 installed, so i will try that safe msiexec replacement trick.

Yeah Glide is Voodoo thing, but some Win9x games run only / best in this mode - faster or better looking.. But was is best nGlide wrapper is working with Windows 98, so you can run it on not 3dfx cards too and its fast enough.

I re-downloaded all of them.. replaced msiexec file, but its still the same, the same. I installed so far everything else include .Net 1.1 and sp1 fine. I dunno if original installer 2 was installed by some program or its part of Win98 Se itself.. otherwise all seems to work fine. My system has not installed any updates except some forced by games and all Visual basic and C++ runtimes. Thanks, i guess i will try it next time with clean system..

and installation would replace that in Windows\System? Its strange than size is 80 kb, installer has 1,7 MB..

Fraps.. is nice, but its not working within Glide mode, or not with all games, is quite old version, so i wouldnt mind something better - with cpu and gpu usage, ram or any other Performance data. I guess that i can run such tool as HWinfo, Aida etc.. on second monitor, i would be lucky and not get some incompatible HW bluescreen.. But im afraid that second monitor conenction would mess with games compatibility - what is my first priority, even more modern Windows games had issues when more monitors are connected. Has someone some experience in this area?

Ok i have right one. Mine is reporting - 2.0.2600.2 .. so no 12, but 2 at the start. I know that they are 2 version one for Win NT / 2000 and one for Windows 9x, im not really sure which i downloaded, i had problems to find any version of it. Here is exact message when i run it: Filename is InstMsiA* I didnt found any msiexec in temp, but i found one in Windows\System folder and it reporting same version as your version 2: Im not using KernelEX of course, because of games compatibility.. but i seems that some of these installers is lying IE6 is already installed.

Other option is PCem.. https://pcem-emulator.co.uk/ But even with Core i9 9900K, i can emulate max K6-II 266 + 2x Voodoo 2, no smooth gui or highres Dos / Win9x gamingm, that is why im using Qemu.

Hello, i have clean Win98Se English and i want to install .Net framework 2 - found installer - filesize 23 510 720 bytes, but it giving message that i have to install Microsoft Windows installer 2 first. I found some Microsoft installer (version - 2.0.2600.2, filesize - 1 709 160 butes), but its giving message: The specified services already exists. I dunno if have right .net installer and MS installer 2 - installer files and if have right files, how to install installer? Shout i stop services, or installer it from safe mode or what?

Im still on Intel - Z170- its slower, more expensive, but still more compatible, it make sense because of its old history.. But from Qemu point of view, it should really matters, because all is virtualized.. so if Windows / Linux working fine with physical HW, Qemu should too.. maybe it could be only slower. When i saw first Dosbox Ryzen numbers it was disaster, multiple times slower than Intel, i hope that is fixed. AMD had some issues with messed IOMMu group on Linux, it should be fixed, but you never know, i read lots of new Agesa will fixed promises. I had Ryzen 2200G and Linux gpu, never worked properly, they fixed 2400G, but never 2200G, i waited almost year for that, after that i lost my patience..

I installed it without any flags, because that is nice with Qemu, that all could be set by the book, that emulated chipset and devices are Win98 compatible. Ok well not 100% for successfull boot into normal mod with emulated cirrus graphics you need to disable Windows 98 boot logo - through msdos.sys and logo=0 or you need to use step by step confirmation - and enable all options.

Ok managed to get it working, removing -no-acpi line is needed for sure, im not 100% sure about intel chipset drivers, but it install some intel power device too.. with both of them it is working. I will later try only remove the line, without drivers.. but i thing that i already tried that. Thanks, im using last Qemu 4.2.0. Settings.. There is not really too much to set, there is emulated i440 chipset. Im not sure if good or bad thing to install intel chipset drivers, i installed it to some my machines and it doesnt hurt. Its not sound card settings thing - its same with SB16 and AC97 emulation, for all machine im using RTL8139 network card emulation. I tried to enable / disable acpi ( through -no-acpi \ i suppose that by default it is enabled).. im not sure it has any effect, or if is needed for proper shutdown? USB is enabled. I will keep experimenting maybe i will find some patern, so far im not aware of any.. Only that on Windows, without pass through its at least sometimes working, but on Linux with Passthrough does not, but with more modern Windows XP, Windows 7 machines it worked, so its not pass through bug in general.. its something with Win98.

Hello, i have problems with my Qemu virtual machine shutdown, at least sometimes on Windows and always on Linux - im stuck on blackscreen after shutdown screen. I tried to read some threads, but download are mostly dead.. or updates are included within some huge update packs.. I would like to have to way how to make quickly shutdown working on clean installation. I was able to get - ME290831.EXE TOOLS9X.EXE - which should include some shutdown tools or somethime like that. I wasnt able to get: q260067 - Mapped Drives Shutdown Update q239887 - Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement Q242934 Windows hangs sending system broadcast message during shutdown And there could be others. So i would like to make some collection of them. Other thing is somewhere some shutdown log or other way how to debug, what is wrong?

I know im using it, but still some list of contacts would be better, im connection to lots of machines from lost of machine, im trying to make all name easy to remember, but it has its shortcomings, so i have to still keep online textfile with list.. At least there is recent session list and autodiscovery within lan.

If someone just want to help and install Windows 98 qemu machine on Win/Linux/MacOS its really easy.. Download official Windows installer, install it. - install Tap driver - easiest way is just install OpenVPN package // Only if you need networking.. - select both - your Lan adapter and new tap connection device in control panel networking.. create brigde - rename Tap adapter connection to TAP For full screen use CRTL+ALF+F For release input CRTL+ALT+G Later you can enable some acceleration by these parameters: -accel hax // HAXM Parameter, not working for me with 4.2 im getting crash when Windows desktop is loaded, but maybe it can work for you, pleas report restuls. -accel whpx // Hyper-V Parameter, pleas report results. HAXM need HAXM package installed, WHPX need Hyper-V enabled - its not play at the start of 2020 well with Vmware on same machine, but they are working on it.. Hello, what is cleanest way how to change Windows 2000 / XP system partition driver letter back to C? I usually because of it hiding or removing other partition, when i making multiboot systems, but sometimes i had no time / mood / tools for it,.. Is there some good tool to fix it? I dunno how mych Windows are clever to it, i help have someone some hardcoded pathes etc? System which i want to now fix, are almost clean install, so there would be problems, with other installed problems.

After some time with Anydesk its fine, luck of adress list is annoying so i had to create some online sheet.. and it has some issues with Linux - im using Mint 19.3 - cursor is sometimes invisible.. and sometime im getting stuck clicking (it could be quite dangerous.. , it able kill / freeze machine, drag and drop something etc..) and mostly working double click, when im using Qemu virtual machine within Linux through Anydesk.

Thanks, i tried it but im getting error like with lots of other drivers.. THe AudioPCI iterrupt has been routed incorrectly by the system. Sound inactive, Use Automatic seetting in the Device manager. - Im getting during installation - before any reboot, i maybe can try to change irq to another one, but i dunno which one is preferred by this card? I device manager i just see - Automatic settings - on, IRQ - 11 , Input and Output Range C000-C0FF no conflicts.
