i think you're already aware that removing IE doesn't remove the core files (assuming you didn't remove the core files), so make sure to configure the security options for IE. explorer will still be able to connect to the internet by keying a URL in the address bar. in my case, i set all zones to their highest, unhide the local zone and set that pretty high as well. if you're not familiar with unhiding the local zone, just do a search for something like: unhide "local zone" ie though i'm pretty sure you can accomplish the same thing using gpedit.msc. personally, i don't hardly bother with anti-spyware s/w anymore, though it's not a bad idea. i'd go with RogueSpear's advise on that one. if he's behind a router, set a static IP, disable the DHCP and DNS services and all other unnecessary services. if you want more info on services, you can d/l a spread sheet from my siggy, though it's not complete. if the router is wireless, i'd also suggest disabling the wireless SSID broadcast and enabling WEP, though WEP is easily defeated. for another dose of security, get the "noscript" extension for FF and teach him how to use it. that will block all JS (and other stuff if you want it to) on a site by site basis. NS sits in the status bar and is easily accessible. it allows JS globally, per site, or per session for a site. adblock plus is absolutely great as well http://bene.sitesled.com/adblock.htm - adblock plus https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1136 - filterset.g auto-updater for adblock plus http://www.noscript.net/whats - noscript with all that, he should be in good shape! oh, if you want to have 'windows update' functionality with FF, go here: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ and install the plugin. try to just ignore the fact that you can download virus code there

@Bi0haZarD well, look at the bright side: one of us is bound to be right

anyone ever hear of the "WET" game? partial quote from the TCE website... i did a little searching, but the results aren't exactly relevant when you search for "wet" "game"
-
@suryad far fetched? no, i don't think so. i disagree with your Linux statement however - the source code is there for everyone to see. not to say it hasn't been done in FOSS before (because it has according to what i've read), but code like that doesn't last long. someone is going to catch it.
-
@Bi0haZarD maybe i'm wrong. put it this way: according to what i read (i read the whole thing), i got the impression that the exploit itself has nothing to do with canceling a print job, nor printing at all. maybe i'm interpreting it wrong, but that's my impression. did you read the rest of it too? here's what i mean...
-
according to gibson, the 'feature' or vulnerability - whatever you wanna call it - had nothing to do with canceling print jobs.
-
thanks! that should really help improve the search functionality and save us users some time.
-
well, there's a lot to be said about gibson's credibility - evidently the security community as a whole shuns him from what i've read. myself, i think he's a marketeer. i mean, come on, coding a utility to disable the messenger service? that's nothing more than a marketing ploy to attract attention to his website. however, it's still interesting and i wouldn't doubt that MS, or someone at MS, with or without their knowledge, coded this intentionally. however 'ol stevie boy has been proven wrong in the past. we'll see...

thanks again. what about the character limit when doing phrase searches though?
-
that's an interesting point of view dump the security of NTFS and format FAT32. as strange as that sounds, it may be sound advise - i dunno.

thanks for the tips. the first method still returns a lot of useless pages, however the second method is somewhat better. as long as i've been hanging around here, i've always ignored the option to search within a topic. still, neither method is as intuitive as some forums that provide a link to the page(s) where your search term was found, and then highlight the terms as well. the latter is minor however, as the google toolbar or 'search as you type' can do that. thanks!

i've never had a problem, any problem, reading PDF's with Foxit. granted, it may not render as well, but for people like me who hate huge, bloated, slow loading apps that are full of useless 'features' i don't need, i'll take a rendering quality hit any day - assuming the quality actually is poorer.

i'm playing with robotics in my spare time. i'm using a Pontech HBC101 micro controller to operate RC servos - very simple stuff. the object is to be able to control, remotely and wirelessly, a UGV (unmanned ground vehicle). what i'm looking for is software that can take input from various input devices (mice, joysticks, keyboard) and send strings to a serial port (COM). in the case of the Pontech HBC101, the syntax is very simple: BD? SV? M? where BD is the board number, SV is the servo number and M is the servo position. the HBC101 is a high resolution board and uses 10000 to 20000 for servo positioning (M). so, to move servo number 1, which is attached to board number 1, to it's center position, the syntax is: BD1 SV1 M15000 of course this can done using a terminal, but what i'm after, mainly, is to use a proportional input device, such as a joystick, to send the strings. i can't hardly believe, with how popular robotics is, that there's hardly any (if any at all) applications that support what i'm trying to do. and basically what i'm after is software that emulates an RC transmitter (as used in the remote-control hobby industry for planec, cars, etc.). i'm looking for the following functionality: 1) programmable end points (the limits for M) 2) mixing - being able to mix one channel (servo) with another 3) high resolution, proportional control 4) exponential curves - the ability to change a linear curve to make a joystick (for instance) fell more responsive, or softer near it's center position. 5) deadband detection/adjustmant 6) support for mice, keyboards and USB joysticks 7) support for many (32+) joystick buttons 8) support for at least 3 joystick axises (including the 'twist' ® axis) 9) a high degree of configurability 10) the software must run on XP 11) open source is highly preferable it could be .NET, Java, Python, C, BASIC, Delphi - whatever. the software can be a console app, as i don't need a GUI at this point. i don't know any languages very well at all, but have messed around with Python, Java NET Beans, BASIC and a few others. my problem is 2-fold; i don't have the patience to learn, and i don't have the time to learn. this *could* turn out to be a long-term project, as i'd like to commercialize it at some point.

yeah. it's called 'add/remove programs > uninstall' http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ http://www.miranda-im.org/ there's a lot of other multi-protocol IM clients as well.

where ya see dat? i have 2.0 and i can't get it to open a PDF. save as a PDF, yeah, but not read. you have more info on OO support for PDF's? OH! never mind! you said 'authoring', not reading. /end daily stupidity episode

once more... if you need a good, free, fast, non-bloated PDF reader that runs on 95 on up... http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

i know this has been mentioned before, but this is really annoying... 1) i can sort of understand the 3 character limit when searching, though it is a pain - cant add words like "ie", "oe", "cd", "nt", "98", etc., etc., etc.. these words are no less important to returning relevant results than any other words. if it's possible to just filter out useless words, then that would be a much better solution (filter "it", "to", "as", etc.). i know there's redundant threads being created because of this annoyance. i've done it myself. 2) the real annoyance is when you want to search for a phrase and this limit is STILL in place. 3) another huge annoyance is when you do a search and a thread with multiple pages is returned - the search results do not indicate on which page(s) your search string was found. with many threads having 25, 50 or more pages, this makes the search results virtually useless and a waste of bandwidth and the users time.

i didn't find this tweak anywhere... how to remove the delete confirmation dialog when using SHIFT + DELETE? nor did i find a answer to this... you change the extension of a file from .txt to .cmd (for example), windows generates a warning. how do you get rid of than annoyance?

a co-worker showed me that a month or so ago. it looks really cool!

terrorism. wow. i wasn't aware that that pie-tossing was an act of terrorism. homeland defense just make a new law or something? better stop throwing rice at weddings too... you never know.

after you burn a CD, put it in the microwave for 3 seconds.

yeah, but is it really a malicious "hacker" (in the true sens of the word) the average joe at home needs to worry about? the bigger problem is "script kiddies" i would think. i would guess that if you were bent on keeping out a real hacker, you'd have your hands very full, but the pimply faced, port scanning script kiddies are a different animal and easier to deal with. the problem is that they're so abundant. i would think a hacker has little reason to even bother with with mr. average. they're probably interested in far more challenging obstacles.

i don't know, but there's a typo in the XP line... multi(0)disk()rdisk(1)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect disk()
