  1. 1. Thanks a lot for taking the time to figure out which files are not compatible with 98SE. I'll remove them from 98SE2ME in the next edition [sometimes tonite].2. HD size = issues to consider: - If your mobo BIOS is of an older generation [~ before 2000], it probably doesn't support LBA [Logical Block Addressing] int13h [28 bits] for disks > 32 GB [max 137 GB] or LBA int13h 48 bits for disks > 64 GB [max 2 TB]. In such case you may want to consider installing a so-called "BIOS extender" like Easy Disk or Ontrack which install their own extended boot sector, usually provided by the drive manufacturer. - 98SE scandskw.exe supports disks > 32 GB only if you install the fixed ESDI_506.PDR build 4.10.2225: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=243450 - 98SE needs the updated FDISK.EXE to recognize disks > 64 GB: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=263044 Gape's SP 2.0.1 installs both these files. But I digress, you should ask Petr about this. On a personal note: As far as disk partitioning is concerned, I use only Partition Magic [retail], currently at version 8.0. PowerQuest was bought out by Symantec [maker of Norton Anti-Virus] a couple of years ago, so Partition Magic is now sold under the Symantec name: http://www.symantec.com/partitionmagic/ This baby can do anything to any hard disk you throw at it. Hope this helps.
  2. erpdude8: May I also have a copy of Q242161 please? Many thanks in advance.
  3. If u have already tried the solutions suggested by MS:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=178084 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=234647 I would like to suggest to install the newer file from Windows ME setup CD [if u have it]: EXTRACT/Y D:\WIN9X\WIN_17.CAB /L C:\TEMP MPREXE.EXE where D must be replaced if your CD/DVD drive letter is different. This file has to be replaced from native MS-DOS mode [shift + F5 from Startup Menu]: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm#MEN MPREXE.EXE goes in %windir%\SYSTEM . Hope this helps.
  4. The 98SE2ME backup/restore procedure is explained in READ1ST.TXT [78 KB]:READ1ST.TXT which is also part of 98SE2ME [2 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 Please see these chapters for complete details: EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FAQ 98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE Backup is only automatic: must be run from within 98SE2ME.BAT options 1 + 2 [u have the choice not to back up]. Restore is only manual: must be run by user from 98RESTOR.BAT. This is the entire system backup/restore function. Options 3 + 6 have separate backup/restore functions [only replaced fiels are backed up]: restore must be run from Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs. Hope this helps.
  5. Hi,Sorry about the delay, been a lil busy lately. Please try to replace these files [they all go into %windir%\SYSTEM] from native MS-DOS outside Windows: SETUP4.DLL SETUPAPI.DLL SETUPX.DLL If that doesn't work, replace these: CFGMGR32.DLL CFGWIZ.DLL FINSTALL.DLL If that doesn't work, replace these: MSNET32.DLL MSPP32.DLL MSTCP.DLL If that doesn't work, replace these: NETAPI.DLL NETAPI32.DLL NETDI.DLL NETOS.DLL If that doesn't work, replace these: NDSWAN16.DLL NDSWAN32.DLL RASAPI16.DLL RASAPI32.DLL RNAUI.DLL Please let me know of results, and if it works, which exact files fixed your problem. Hope this helps.
  6. Hi PJ,I believe most of these files + explanations why I removed them are listed in READ1ST.TXT: READ1ST.TXT under the "NEWS + CHANGES" chapter [it's a long read thou ]. READ1ST.TXT also installs into the C:\9!M folder as part of 98SE2ME.EXE [2 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 The only files that are not listed in READ1ST.TXT are: GRPCONV.EXE = In 98SE2ME I'm using the one from MS IE 6.0 SP1, it's the same build but newer date stamp. If u install 98SE2ME, you'll find it into the C:\9!M folder. HIMEM.SYS + IFSHLP.SYS = these are identical with the ones from 98SE setup CD. JPEGIM32.FLT = much newer build [from MS Office 2003] is installed by MS Paint Add-on Import + Export Graphic Filters Plugins Pack: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#PNT Hope this helps.
  7. As I said I'm out of the loop as far as 98lite is concerned. If you think 98lite is the culprit, why not try to restore the IE files? Hope this helps.
  8. If 98lite only removes files that can be restored from 9x setup CD, that means my experience with 98lite is probably out of date [last time I used it was 3 years ago]. And if that's true, obviously u don't need any backups.Backup/imaging software: any such tool needs some disk space to store its images. I've never used any backup software, because I burn everything on CDs/DVDs, and I always use 2 hard drives, 1 to "mirror" the other. If CD is out of question, you need either free hard disk space or a backup drive of some sort, like USB, FireWire, memory card, Iomega, Syquest, Jazz, Shark, Orb, Zip, optical, LS-120, tape etc. Worst case scenario: use PKZIP [ http://garbo.uwasa.fi/pub/pc/arcers/pk250dos.exe ] DOS based tool to zip up all files/folders u want backed up onto multiple floppies, which of course, will take for ever. To learn how to use PKZIP to span onto more than 1 floppy, run it without any command line parameters: PKZIP from a DOS box. Pressing 2 should list most used options. Under 9x, Pkzip 2.50 is LFN compliant. To (re)enable/fix media streaming: - install WMP9 and all its current patches: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP9 - if that doesn't work, make sure u don't have a HOSTS file full of banned sites in your %windir% folder. - if that doesn't work, make sure your browser allows cookies to be read and written both ways, downstream + upstream, because most streaming servers allow u to d/l media files only after sending cookies to your computer. - if that doesn't work, make sure if u use a software based firewall, to allow UDP, TCP and even ICMP protocol access to servers that might need to send such packets, which unfortunately is part of MS DRM scheme, used to stream copyrighted media. - if that doesn't work, and if u use a hardware based router with built-in firewall, make sure it's set to allow UDP, ICMP, and eventually javascript + ActiveX. - if that doesn't work, make sure u use MS IE on web sites that require ActiveX to stream media, and make sure IE has ActiveX + javascript enabled, and your Internet zone security settings are on medium or low. - if that doesn't work, tweak WMP9 [wmplayer.exe -> Tools -> Options -> Network -> check all boxes except ports 7000-7007] to accept packets from UDP, ICMP + multicast servers. - also make sure WMP9 allows scripts from websites: wmplayer.exe -> Tools -> Options -> Security -> check the box Run script comands when present. - also make sure if using Google toolbar [or similar] in IE to disable its popup feature by clicking the icon at web site(s) u stream media from. I am honored to be able to help. Hope this helps.
  9. I'm puzzled. Please tell me, what criteria do u follow to interpret those builds the way u do? BTW: those builds were reported by GetVer: http://lbrisar.htmlplanet.com/e_cmd32.html#getver 1 thing I've noticed is that DCOM + NT4 builds are smaller in size than 98 + ME family ?! Also, from looking at the date stamp, the newest is from ME ?! Still puzzled... It has been ruled that this evil heretic shall be thrown into the deepest dungeon where he shall be tortured for the rest of his unworthy days.

  11. These are the free(ware) backup/restore tools I know of:http://www.mdgx.com/secrets.htm#FDPT Scroll down to: HDClone Free Edition SyncBack Backup4All Cobian Backup SyncBack Freeware ImageMaker Replicator 98SE does not have System Restore (SR). SR was 1st introduced in 2000 + ME. 9x [all editions] install only primitive MS Backup [stripped down Seagate Backup] as optional component from Control Panel. And to simply erase all files backed up by 98lite is a big mistake, because some of them are not the same builds as the ones on the 98SE setup CD [older, buggy]. I know of cases when restoring files removed by 98lite from setup CD breaks the OS. PS: If I may go "really off-topic" 1 last time [so u can understand why I went off topic the 1st time ]: I don't like 98lite because it doesn't display a complete list of files it removes *before* it removes them, doesn't explain what removed files are necessary for, nor the actual risks of removing some of them. Example: I wasted an entire week to figure out why the main 98SE2ME batch script won't work on somebody's PC, no matter what I tried. U know why? This person used 98lite, which removed the entire C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND folder, and because of that, OS detection became impossible in batch mode [VER | FIND/I "2222" ; MEM/C | FIND/I "vmm32" etc]. And if 98SE2ME runs on anything else except 98SE it destroys the entire OS. In conclusion I had to add all these programs [ATTRIB.COM FIND.COM CHOICE.EXE MEM.EXE MOVE.EXE START.EXE] to make it work independent of which files are removed. Hope this helps.
  12. 1. You mean Caldera II 3.3:http://www.calmira.net/ and Calmira XP 3.33: http://users.pandora.be/azone/calmira/calxp333.htm 2. The Force is strong with this one. B) omg... you have to watch ep 6, it's the best imho.
  13. Sorry for your trouble.I just tried it and works ok. My web provider might have had problems at the time when u tried. Please try again at a later time. 98SE2ME [2 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 Hope this helps.
  14. my 2 ¢ Last time I've used 98lite was many years ago. It does take out large chunks of the OS, it does make it leaner and faster, but IMHO at the expense of losing features I care for. I stopped using 98lite because I had no need for it after building a faster PC some years ago, and since then 98SE runs just fine without being "trimmed down". As a side note, I've been doing my own "trimming", 1 group of files at a time. For example I have successfully removed: - webcheck.dll + loadwc.exe: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46066...ndpost&p=320546 - all power saving/ACPI/APM related files: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip15.htm#MYP - tape backup, MS backup + networking component: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip14.htm#SUYG and many others [+ their needed REG entries + INF files] I have backed up in zip files. What I would do: burn your entire OS, 98lite + all 98lite backed up files/folders on CDs. If that's not a viable option, then try to create a Ghost or DriveImage [or whatever backup software you're using] backup "image". Then go ahead and delete the 98lite backups. Somewhere down the line, if u ever need to get back some of those OS components, just restore from CDs or backup image. Hope this helps.
  15. How to remove SR + _RESTORE folder: http://www.mdgx.com/me1.htm#UPH SRP [system remove pro] ver 1.5 should be linked in article above. Older SRP v1.1 [in case u need it] is linked here: http://www.mdgx.com/me2.htm#WWWBF Hope this helps.
  16. Hello, This post is addressed to MSFN forums mods. This is the 1st time I ask a question or suggest something in this forum, which I keep enjoy using/reading since Nov 2004. Among the main reasons I visit MSFN forums are (1) the cool people and (2) the excellent features of the software/scripts used [customized phpbb I believe]. The topic I created + maintain: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349 involves frequent updates due to the nature of my project. Until June 1 2005, I was able to edit my older posts [the most important is the 1 at the top], which is essential to my package, to announce all interested when + why I'm updating, because the top post is the most visible and easiest to read, for both newcomers and seasoned users. Now this is not possible anymore. I do understand the reason why this has been restricted [and I've read all posts above], but IMHO to remove the edit option doesn't look like the optimal solution. Please let me know if you guys plan on reinstating the edit button. Thanks for reading. Best wishes
  17. Not necessarily... PC Magazine WinTidy v2.0 32-bit for Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 saves + restores Desktop icons layout, loads with Windows, customizable: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,367,00.asp Direct download [752 KB]: http://images.vnunet.com/v6_static/pcm/p_1...les/wintidy.zip More like this here: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ENH
  18. Yes.But some don't know [some of] the implications, that's why I elaborated.
  19. Good point.I've never used these tools [i use Partition Magic 8 exclusively], and my [2-3 years old] knowledge of these programs comes only from reading about other users' experiences. I posted them here only because these are the best free [GPL] tools I'm aware of. I really hope [some of these] turn out ok, so Gape can add them to future SP releases.
  20. Danger, Will Robinson... Danger... I like MS layout.dll too [use it all the time], but you may want to know about the bugs: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip20.htm#LDI Hope this helps.
  21. Thanks for noticing the invalid link.Looks like Ipswitch recently removed all WSFTP LE files from their ftp servers, and replaced them with WSFTP Pro demos. But I found another [fast] www server which still has 5.08: http://www.vipmeister.com/dl/wsftp/ws_ftple.exe The other matter: Don't worry about it, I was just wondering if it's doable, I guess not. Million thanks for spending time trying, nonetheless. Tihiy: WINFILE.EXE 32-bit exists only in NT 3.5, 3.51 + 4.0, last release was in NT4 SP6a: http://www.mdgx.com/files/FMNT.ZIP The problem is that the 32-bit 1 doesn't work in 9x, and the 9x 16-bit 1 can't be "converted" to 32-bit. The good news is the 16-bit 1 supports LFNs with this "plug": http://www.wincorner.com/home/fmlfns.html
