  2. Try to (re)install MS Scripting APIs current release for 98SE [build 5.6.0.8825]: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#MSE English file [665 KB]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/c...c1c/scr56en.exe If that doesn't work, try to reinstall WMP: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm You have 3 choices: - WMP 6.4: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#MP6 - WMP 7.1: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#MP7 - or WMP 9.0: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP9 They all work with 98SE. FYI: WMP9 requires MS IE 6.0 SP1: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#IEX and DX 9.0c: http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#DX9 already installed. Hope this helps.
  3. Oooops... busted! - Part 2. Fresh out of the oven... * Unofficial Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 43 True Type Fonts (TTF) Pack [3.75 MB, English]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/TTFPAK.EXE These TTFs are part of: - MS IE 6.0 SP1: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#IEX - MS Euro TTF Packs + Patches: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#EUR - MS Internet TTF Packs: http://beebo.org/corefonts/ - MS Windows 2000 SP4: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downl...rvicepacks/sp4/ - MS Windows XP SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/ - MS Windows 2003 SP1: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003...rvicepacks/sp1/ Posted here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#TTF and here: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581 Enjoy.
  4. My bad, I must have misunderstood your question. ;(DOSLFN only allows DOSLFNBK and other similar DOS tools to work properly [preserve LFNs] from native DOS mode. I have never used DOSLFNBK. DOSLFNBK [and other similar tools such as MS LFNBK] from what I read, only backs up LFN information from the HD, not the actual files/folders, that's why I don't care for it, and that's why I don't even mention it at my site. But if u prefer a free alternative [which I don't care for either, for the same reason], please try [if u haven't already] LFNBK.EXE = MS Long File Names Backup tool for Win9x/ME, which is found on your Win98 SE setup CD in the \Tools\Reskit\Powertoy folder. I don't like xxcopy because it is nag freeware, it pops up its annoying copyright screen every time it starts, after which I have to press additional keys to make it continue, thus making it useless for automated batch files. Another LFN compliant tool is: XCLONE.EXE v1.3 LFN disk, directory + file copy 16-bit DOS console tool [freeware]: http://www.sac.sk/files.php?d=14&l=X D/l XCLONE [20 KB]: ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/utildisk/xclone13.zip which I use in 98SE2ME to backup the entire Win98 SE OS into C:\W98SEOLD from options 1 + 2, inside Windows. XCLONE is extremely easy to use, requires only few command line parameters, and I like it mostly because it is very fast [if loading SMARTDRV in memory before using XCLONE]. Please note that XCLONE is LFN compliant only from within Windows, same as all other 16-bit DOS tools [except xxcopy I believe], because native/true MS-DOS mode [outside Windows] is not LFN compliant per se [as I'm sure you already know]. That's why I was recommending DOSLFN, a free GPL TSR [memory resident], which makes native MS-DOS mode LFN compliant, so you can copy/rename/delete/move/etc whatever files/folders around. So if u load DOSLFN into memory [occupies ~ 12 KB], then u can use tools like XCLONE [and probably even DOSLFNBK + LFNBK (but I haven't tried them)] from native DOS, and they will preserve LFNs. When I recommended those LFN compliant backup tools, I meant that these are native Windows tools, which perform full/incremental/partial backups of files/folders/drives/partitions. And as we all know, all native Windows 32-bit [a.k.a. Win32 = includes all 9x + NTx MS OSes] tools [backup or not] preserve LFNs, a.k.a. are LFN compliant. This means that whenever you see a program that says it is 32-bit, it implies that it is always LFN compliant. Also, most of the backup tools that make drive/partition backups, also make file/folder backups, and it's up to you how you configure the respective program to serve your particular needs. Glad u found a fix to your problem. Hope this helps.
  5. And I thought I was the only one who never reformats or installs anew. My original Win95 [gradually upgraded 1 OS at a time all the way up to ME and then "downgraded" back to 98SE] partition will be 10 years old this August [happy birthday!]. That is because [if any of you know or recall] Windows 95 retail first edition was released August 15 1995, and I was in line at the store when it opened that AM.
  6. Oooops... busted! I actually plan on creating a font pack with all updates I can get my hands on. Until then, u can get these: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm Windows NT4 True Type Fonts (TTF) Euro Patch [2.16 MB]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/9...1b/OffTTUpd.EXE Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP Extra Euro Enabled Fonts [2.48 MB]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/pub...N-US/PubUpd.exe Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2/NT4 Euro Enabled Tahoma True Type Font (TTF): http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188081 Direct download [306 KB]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/off...us/tahoma32.exe Microsoft Internet Font Packs for Windows 3.1x/95/NT (free): http://beebo.org/corefonts/ Hope this helps.
  7. Please post more details about when, how, why exactly this happens so I can reproduce all steps on my PC.Thanks.
  8. Steve,98SE2ME does not replace FORMAT.COM. FORMAT.COM and most other DOS mode tools from ME will not work under 98SE, unless u load SETVER.EXE from CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT to fake their version number. Please see this page for complete list of ME files replaced by 98SE2ME: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#FME Hope this helps.
  9. Decent selection of mostly free(ware) backup tools [see the 32-bit ones that keep LFNs in FAT32/NTFS/etx2 environments]: http://www.mdgx.com/secrets.htm#FDPT Bad memory? guide on how to check + DOS and Windows free(ware) tools: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip8.htm#BADMEM DOSLFN is issued now in 2 versions: * DOSLFN.COM v0.32o Long File Names (LFNs) DOS mode TSR 16-bit for MS-DOS 5/6/7/8 and Windows 3.1x/9x/ME supports FAT32 and Joliet CD-ROMs, includes LOWDMA and FastOpen cache, highly customizable: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~heha/hs_freeware/freew.html Direct download [291 KB, freeware, open source, German]: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~heha/hs_freeware/doslfn.zip More info: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~heha/en/hs...re/what_lfn.htm Improved DOSLFN v0.40a: http://www.geocities.com/jadoxa/doslfn/ Direct download [290 KB, freeware, right-click to save!]: http://www.geocities.com/jadoxa/doslfn/doslfn.zip Uses 12 KB of upper DOS RAM if loaded with LOADHIGH in AUTOEXEC.BAT (upper memory manager required in CONFIG.SYS). Load LOWDMA.SYS after UMBPCI.SYS in CONFIG.SYS to fix ISA DMA errors in native MS-DOS: http://www.mdgx.com/umb.htm#TOO I've also had a series of random [unexplained] HD errors recently: turned out to be a faulty 5V power cable, and it took me almost 2 weeks to figure it out.
  10. 98SE2ME files are open source [more details in READ1ST.TXT + INNOFILE.TXT], therefore u can modify them any way u want for the purpose of using/testing stuff on your own computer(s).If u plan on improving 98SE2ME, please post your scripts/ideas here so we can all benefit. To include ME files into a 98SE setup CD, u need to know exactly how CABs are linked so u can properly replace files and repack the CABs. I don't have that info, but Microsoft does. As long as u do this right, it doesn't matter if u add/replace hexed or original files, u just need to make sure checksum detection [iNF code mostly] corresponds with the altered/replaced files code. The catch is that you're talking about modding an entire OS here, so this will be tedious and lengthy work if u plan on pursuing this project. I wish u the best of luck. And please post here your scripts/ideas, so we can all benefit. Edit: Added this Q&A into READ1ST.TXT under the "FAQ" chapter: READ1ST.TXT ________________________________________ About thumbnail folders: I need more details, please, like: how exactly happens, which Windows Explorer folder view were u using, do u get any error dialogs, if u do please post them here, which 98SE2ME option(s) did u install right before this happened, which 98SE2ME edition were u using, are u sure it's an 98SE2ME option that caused this, which exact steps u took to fix exactly what. PS: thumbnail view errors have been fixed: please d/l 98SE2ME newest edition: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=46349 Hope this helps.
  11. What can go wrong / what u can do: - flash BIOS to current version - faulty wiring/cabling inside your PC case ? - faulty power supply unit [PSU] ? - virus [sometimes takes at least 2 different AV tools to detect 1 virus/worm] ? - corrupted system files/drivers ? Hope this helps.
  12. Looks like 77.72 NV4_DISP.DLL has a bug. The only workaround I figured out so far [short of hexing the #$%& DLL] is to use a different version of NV4_DISP.DLL , which goes in %windir%\SYSTEM32 . I use the newest available [Forceware 80.40 beta 32-bit for 2000/XP/2003]: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1116 }SkOrPn--' I see you're using XP Pro 64-bit, unfortunately 32-bit drivers don't work with your 64-bit OS. But u can use the next one down to newest 64-bit driver, which is 76.80: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1086 Please try NV4_DISP.DLL 76.80 and post here if it doesn't correct your WMP10 video issues. Hope this helps.
  13. I bet there is, but unfortunately at the moment I don't have the time to come up with the scripts. To abide by MS guidelines, this requires among other things to repack all setup CABs, and I don't have the info on how exactly each CAB depends on/links to the others. Maybe some day I'll research this stuff... Hope this helps.
  14. About all the differences between your 2 Process Explorer reports: - WatcherSea listed all processes loaded by Windows + all programs/TSRs/DLLs/etc - eidenk listed only the processes loaded by sysedit Sysedit.exe is a 16-bit executable, not a PE 32-bit executable, so it only shows in Process Explorer or Dependency Walker [the ones I used] as single process. Looking inside the 98SE version of sysedit.exe with eXeScope [shareware 16-bit + 32-bit PE editor]: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#HEX I see the list of calls made to Windows APIs under the Import section: KERNEL USER GDI That's it. All functions + API calls are listed under the Header section [with 2 subsections: Exe Header + Win Header]. Because sysedit.exe performs only a single task, it doesn't load any other processes/APIs besides the 3 above, no matter which OS it is used under. Hope this helps.
  15. Petr, Gape, Tihiy + other developers, you might find this useful: somebody made a small GUI tool [works with all Win9x/ME editions, even if it is meant for NTx] which converts REG files into INF files [GNU GPL open source]: http://www.paraglidernc.com/12142.html ConvRegToInf is designed specifically for Bart's PEBuilder tool [works only with NTx OSes]: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ Download ConvRegToInf [11 KB]: http://www.paraglidernc.com/plugins/ConvRegToInf02.zip ConvRegToInf requires NFR 1.0 or newer already installed: http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/dow...s/framework1_1/ ConvRegToInf's INF file HKXX [HKEY_XXX_XXX] Hive Keys entries are in hex code, eg: 0x1 0x2 0x3 0x4 etc instead of MS default usage: HKLM\Software HKCU HKU\.Default HKCR etc Also, if using any REG_SZ [string Value], you need to modify the resulting INF file to add an extra comma [ , ] before "Value Data" to make it work properly: ConvRegToInf outputs to: 0x1,"SubKey_Name","REG_SZ Value Name","Value Data" needs to be modified to: HKLM,"SubKey_Name","REG_SZ Value Name",,"Value Data" I found ConvRegToInf very useful with huge REG files that need to be loaded in INF format. If anybody cares to see an example of using ConvRegToInf, please d/l GRPHFLTS.EXE [1.65 MB, packed with iexpress]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/GRPHFLTS.EXE posted here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#PNT Open the EXE in PowerArchiver or WinZip 9.xx: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP extract GF.INF, then open GF.INF into Notepad and look under the [RF] section. And if u wish to obtain my GF.REG file, please email me. Hope this helps.
  16. More stuff about oemlogo + oeminfo: http://www.mdgx.com/last4.htm#OEMINFO Hope this helps.
  17. come on guys. cut Rudolph Loew some slack. I havent seen anything wrong for what he did or what he was trying to do. hey if Mr. Loew's software solution to the 137gb+ problems requires paying for his software so be it.The context of my post was actually my reaction to Mr. Loew telling Petr that he nor anybody else has the right to post/distribute such information [which Petr obtained from the public domain] on how to theoretically reprogram esdi_506.pdr to support HDs > 137 GB.Personally I have nothing against Mr. Loew, as long as he doesn't try to monopolize this issue [which would be impossible anyway, due to the fact that the driver is trademarked to MS] and/or discourage somebody else from trying to achieve something similar, without referring to/reverse-engineering/disassembling/hacking/etc his work in any way. Just my 2 ç
  18. I assume you are reffering to these setuppp.inf tweaks: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=45373...ndpost&p=343155
  19. Your new alpha 2 SP works great on my "from scratch" 98FE install. I've also tried it on a new setup + MS IE 6.0 SP1 + DirectX 9.0c, with same results. Keep up the good work, Petr. PS: If I [ever] find the time, I consider a couple of new projects: 98FE298SE + 98FE2ME.
  20. The only software categories I know of that remove certain "VarLDID" reg values are viruses/trojans [on purpose ] and buggy registry cleaners [by mistake ]. TonyArts EasyCleaner is one of the registry cleaners that fixed this bug long time ago: http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm Also, I know that there are less VarLDID values in the 98/98SE registry compared to ME. These are the VarLDID values installed by a "clean" setup of: - 98FE/98SE: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID] "28700"="C:\\PROGRA~1" "28701"="C:\\Program Files" "28702"="C:\\PROGRA~1" "28710"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1" "28720"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1\\HYPERT~1" "28730"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1" "28732"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1" "28740"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\MICROS~1" "28742"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\MICROS~1" "29000"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1" "29001"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer" "29002"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1" "29400"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1\\CONNEC~1" "29401"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\Connection Wizard" "29402"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1\\CONNEC~1" "29600"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Chat" "29601"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Chat" "29602"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Chat" "29800"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\NETMEE~1" "29801"="C:\\Program Files\\NetMeeting" "29802"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\NETMEE~1" "30000"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\OUTLOO~1" "30001"="C:\\Program Files\\Outlook Express" "30002"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\OUTLOO~1" "30100"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM" "30400"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Plus!\\Themes" "30800"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\WINDOW~1" "30801"="C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player" "30802"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\WINDOW~1" - ME: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID] "28700"="C:\\PROGRA~1" "28701"="C:\\Program Files" "28702"="C:\\PROGRA~1" "28710"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1" "28720"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1\\HYPERT~1" "28730"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1" "28732"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1" "28740"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\MICROS~1" "28742"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\MICROS~1" "29000"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1" "29001"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer" "29002"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1" "29400"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1\\CONNEC~1" "29401"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\Connection Wizard" "29402"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1\\CONNEC~1" "29800"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\NETMEE~1" "29801"="C:\\Program Files\\NetMeeting" "29802"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\NETMEE~1" "30000"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\OUTLOO~1" "30001"="C:\\Program Files\\Outlook Express" "30002"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\OUTLOO~1" "30100"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM" "30400"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Plus!\\Themes" "30600"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\MESSEN~1" "30601"="C:\\Program Files\\Messenger" "30602"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\MESSEN~1" "30800"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\WINDOW~1" "30801"="C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player" "30802"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\WINDOW~1" "30810"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\MOVIEM~1" "30811"="C:\\Program Files\\Movie Maker" "30812"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\MOVIEM~1" "30900"="C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLIC~1" "30901"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Application Data" "30902"="C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLIC~1" "30910"="C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLIC~1\\MICROS~1" "30911"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Application Data\\Microsoft" "30912"="C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLIC~1\\MICROS~1" IMO: My advice is to carefully read the docs/reviews/user feedback for registry cleaners and similar tools, and avoid the ones with bad/dubious reputation, especially the ones that bundle adware, homepageware, spyware or are advertised as shareware/free trial. Most importantly, make positively sure you create a full registry backup before using any software that alters your registry. As I stated before, 98SE2ME does not touch any of these registry keys/values. To see exactly which registry values/keys are modded/deleted/added by 98SE2ME, please open the INF + REG files from C:\9!M in Notepad. These issues are also detailed in READ1ST.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT Hope this helps.
  21. I've come across this problem occasionally on people's computers. Like ack-hh noted, it's caused by third party utilities formatting the partition with a cluster size that scandisk and defrag don't like. So far, using Partition Magic to convert the cluster size to 32K has always corrected the problem.I remember being familiar with this MS FORMAT issue if using non-default cluster sizes.Documented here: http://www.mdgx.com/secrets.htm#FORMAT-Z
  22. The only "unofficial" IO.SYS patches I know of are these 2 [not counting the WinME IO.SYS real DOS mode patches]: * IO Patch v1.4 16-bit for Windows 95B/95C OSR 2.x and 98/98 SE patches Microsoft IO.SYS to allow using it on creating bootable CD-ROM/floppy images [37 KB, freeware]: http://www.funet.fi/pub/simtelnet/msdos/cdrom/iopat14.zip * JO.SYS v1.4 16-bit for Windows 98/98 SE patches Microsoft IO.SYS to allow proper delay/schedule when booting from bootable CD-ROMs/floppies: http://www.nu2.nu/jo/ Direct download [25 KB, freeware]: http://www.nu2.nu/download.php?sFile=jo14.zip Bootable Windows 98/98 SE floppy Boot Sector Fix [16 KB, free]: http://www.nu2.nu/download.php?sFile=w98btfix.zip Hope this helps.
  23. Guys, I've tried all versions of sysedit.exe: Win 3.10, WfWG 3.11, Win95 FE, Win95 OSR2.5, Win98FE, Win98SE + WinXP setup CD [yes, XP has the same 16-bit sysedit ] on all these OSes, with and w/o MS IE 5/6: 98FE, 98SE + ME. They all worked [as they should] regardless if 98SE2ME, Gape's SP, Petr's SP, Tihiy's RP or IE 5/6 were installed or not. The only ones that don't work with 9x OSes [are not supposed to] are sysedit.exe from NT4, 2000 + 2003. More mystery. BTW: Kernel32.dll from ME cannot be used with 98FE or 98SE, nor the other way around.
  24. I think what Mrcldb was trying to tell me, was for me to remove ndis.vxd from the never-use-these-files-from-ME-with-98SE list: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#NEVER and eventually include it in 98SE2ME, because it worked on his PC. Hope this helps.
  25. My bad, was a typo, the next version down is 71.84, not 61.84.I've been using 71.84 for ~ 4 months, since the day they released them [February 25 2005]. Never had any problems under: 98FE, 98SE + ME. Tried them on: GeForce FX 6600, GeForce4 Ti 4200, GeForce 1st edition + GeForce FX 6800 Ultra. U can get them from: - NVidia [only WHQL certified/candidate releases]: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_archive.html or all previous 6.xx + 7.xx releases, including beta: - Station Drivers [if u don't mind French]: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/nvidia%20forceware.htm - Guru 3D: http://downloads.guru3d.com/ Important: Make sure u uninstall the older version first. After the post-install reboot, make sure to open Desktop Properties and reconfigure all your settings. To enable Desktop Properties GeForce "advanced" settings [including overclocking], merge this REG file into your registry [reboot not necessary]: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak] "Coolbits"=dword:ffffffff "DisableApplyColorsAtStartup"=dword:00000000 "NoMenus"=dword:00000000 "NoPages"=dword:00000000 "NvCplCustomResConfig"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableActiveApp"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableAdditionalInfoPage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableAGPSettingsPage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableAppProfilePage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableClearViewPage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableDesktopOverlapPage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableFanControl"=dword:00000003 "NvCplEnableFrameSyncPage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableHardwarePage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnablenForcePage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableOverlaySpanControl"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnablePwrMzrOnDesktopMenu"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableRotationColorSettings"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableScreenMenuPage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplEnableTroubleshootingPage"=dword:00000001 "NvCplExposeWin2kDualView"=dword:00000001 "NvCplNvThermPage"=dword:00000001 "nViewShellIsRegistered"=dword:00000001 "QTwkEnableModeChangeWarning"=dword:00000000 "QuickTweak"=dword:00000020 "TwinViewCapsOverride"=dword:00000001Make sure Desktop Properties is closed when u run the REG file.
