  1. If I may make a comment:OSR [Orbiting Satellite Revisited] versions above are actually: OSR 1 Win950, A 1,0 1,1 OSR 2 Win95B0, B1, C 2,0 2,1 2,5 or if u wish: 95 RTM [4.00.0950] 95A OSR1 [4.00.0951] 95B OSR2.0 [4.00.1111] 95B OSR2.1 [4.00.1212] 95C OSR2.5 [4.00.1214] More on this: http://www.mdgx.com/ver.htm#TAB Have fun.
  2. Gape, Petr + Tihiy: Got more info about VOLTRACK.VXD patch: Therefore VOLTRACK.VXD fixes the issue in Q249824, not the issue in Q234697.Therefore WinME doesn't need a VOLTRACK.VXD patch. Also got patched KRNL386.EXE 4.90.3001 for Windows ME. Posted here: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#WME and at top of this topic: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581 Top of topic updated 5-24-2005: - please check out revised KRNL386.EXE + VOLTRACK.VXD fixes - updated MSKB Q article numbers - repackaged the installers to reflect changes - created installer for KRNL386.EXE 4.90.3001 KRNL386.EXE patch [for either 98 FE, 98 SE or ME] doesn't need Q891711 installed, works independent of it, but it is recommended to install KRNL386.EXE patch after Q891711 patch, just in case any Kernel errors/lockups show up. Note that KRNL386.EXE patches and Q891711 patches are now available for all 3 editions: 98 FE, 98 SE + ME. All patches are for English editions. Hope this helps.
  3. I've seen Ep III 2 times already, the 1st time at the premiere: Thursday 12:01 am. B) Had to stay 2 1/2 hours in line to get decent seats thou. Liked it way better than I + II. But I gotta say IV, V + VI are still the best IMHO. My favorites: 1. VI 2. IV 3. V 4. III 5. I 6. II You? May the Force be with you.
  4. Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this. All files you need for compiling Inno Setup are in this small zip [10 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/INNOFILE.ZIP Please read INNOFILE.TXT for details. Please ask me if you need anything else. Hope this helps. Buona fortuna.
  5. I've been using TclockEx in the past, but I gave it up cuz I've hexed my explorer.exe, shell32.dll, comdlg32.dll, user.exe etc in Resource Hacker, so I have no need for it anymore. But I just tried it again, and this is what happens: u need to modify both date/day/year and hour/min/sec display to always show with leading zeroes [u can change separators to whatever u want]: MM-dd-yy ff HH:mm:ss tt If u have something like: M-d-yy ff H:m:s tt then it will always resize when the time/date changes e.g. from 9 [1 digit] to 10 [2 digits] to fit the extra digit. Hope this helps.
  6. Fixed VOLTRACK.VXD 4.10.1999 [patched by the same person who sent KRNL386.EXE] works on the 2 PCs I've tested, with both 98 FE + 98 SE.Note that VOLTRACK.VXD patch is English, NOT Japanese. Q234697 article title is "Computer Hangs When Viewing Empty ORB Removable Drive in Japanese Windows 98".So what is corrected by this new VOLTRACK.VXD if it is not for Japanese Windoes 98? And why Diskvsd.vxd is missing? Petr Didn't get that info.I'll ask, and will let you know.
  7. I've tried once b4, I couldn't "rig" Intellipoint 5.2 to work with 98/98SE/ME. I have an Intellimouse Explorer 4.0a with side wheel, and the side whell works only in XP/2003/Longhorn only with Intellipoint 5.2. But [most of] the extra buttons should work with the older software [last ver of Intellimouse for 9x was 4.12]: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#MOU Microsoft IntelliPoint Mouse Drivers, Tools + Wheel for Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 + MS-DOS 6/7/8 (English): http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseand...d/download.mspx - IntelliPoint v5.2 for Windows 2000/XP/2003 [6.84 MB]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/C...77/IP5_2Eng.exe - IntelliPoint v4.12 for Windows 98/NT4/ME [9.68 MB]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/8...12EngALLMsi.exe - IntelliPoint v4.01 for Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2 + MS-DOS 6/7/8 [7 MB]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/int..._0EngALLMsi.exe Alternative Mouse Pointers for Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP/2003: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=154500 Direct download [90 KB]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/win...N-US/altpnt.exe
  8. This happens when booting from a boot disk. You have to use the /L and /R switches to tell regedit where the *.dat files are.You need to use the full path with drive letter. Same with the /E switch. Good point. I didn't know that. I never had to recreate/restore the registry from a boot disc, because I always have another working copy of Windows on C as backup.
  9. Updated unofficial Q891711 + Q234967 patches [both English] = they all work now: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581 This the scoop about patched KRNL386.EXE 4.10.1999 [sent by patch author]: The scoop about the fixed VOLTRACK.VXD [sent by patch author]: Fixed VOLTRACK.VXD 4.10.1999 [patched by the same person who sent KRNL386.EXE] works on the 2 PCs I've tested, with both 98 FE + 98 SE.Note that VOLTRACK.VXD patch is English, NOT Japanese. I made 1 installer for 98 FE and 1 for 98 SE [total of 4 = see links above] because the "TargetWin9xVersion=" directive in the SED file [i used IEXPRESS.EXE from XP SP2] allows to install only on 1 specific OS build. This line: TargetWin9xVersion=4.10.2222 allows to install only on 98 SE. This line: TargetWin9xVersion=4.10.1998 allows to install only on 98 FE.
  10. Naaah... I just try different stuff 1st.If I recall correctly, after I installed ME, all I had to do was open File Manager, copy all 98SE boot files [from backup] back to C:\ root, to overwrite the ME ones [COMMAND.COM, IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, WINBOOT.INI, AUTOEXEC.BAT + CONFIG.SYS], and then hit the reset button on the PC case. If u care to know about winboot.ini: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip16.htm#WBINI or msdos.sys: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm I need to mention I don't keep HIMEM.SYS, IFSHLP.SYS, EMM386.EXE, MSCDEX.EXE, SMARTDRV.EXE and whatever other memory managers/drivers/tools in %windir% or %windir%\COMMAND, but moved them all to C:\MAX. Ans I don't keep COMMAND.COM in %windir%, but moved it to C:\ root and made reference of it in my config.sys: SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /E:1024 /P /F My boot files: http://www.mdgx.com/mem7.htm One of my [not so well kept ] secrets is that I boot to native MS-DOS, and only after that I start 98SE GUI from a separate batch file [C:\WIN.BAT]. If u care to know about WIN.BAT: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip13.htm#BT2DOS So, after rebooting with 98SE boot files in C:\ root, all I had to do was to rename the ME directory [C:\WME] to something else [like C:\WMEBK], and then rename the backed up [this is the key word: backed up] 98SE dir [C:\W98BK] back to C:\W98. Then I moved WMEBK + "Program Files" to another hard disk, so I can restore it anytime by copying it back to C [from Windows Explorer or a dedicated batch file]. This way I keep separate copies of 98 FE, 98 SE, ME + XP on D. Sorry, forgot to mention I renamed 98SE "C:\Program Files" to "C:\PROGRAMS". Got tired of and deleted 95 OSR1, 95C OSR2.5, NT4, 2000 + 2003 a while back. Last step: ran WIN.BAT from C:\ root [hint: C:\ root is added to my PATH statement in config.sys] to get into the 98SE GUI. Oh, I almost forgot: I keep all DOS based tools I need for file/dir operations in a separate dir [C:\MAX], and those tools are all MS-DOS revision "neutral": this means they are not from either MS-DOS 7.10 [a.k.a. Win98/98SE] nor MS-DOS 8.0 [a.k.a. WinME] which are all "locked" onto the specific release they are from [unless u use setver.exe, which is very primitive, and won't let u use newer tools with older MS-DOS releases], but freebies, most of them part of FreeDOS: http://www.freedos.org/freedos/software/ and most of which are linked here: http://www.mdgx.com/dos.htm If u've seen the "FREE TOOLS" chapter from 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT u know what I mean. B) This allows me to copy/move/rename/etc files/dirs around independent of Win9x or MS-DOS release. TIP: To install any Win9x/ME release even if it won't let u install any older 1 from within Windows GUI, all u need to do is: - exit Windows GUI to native MS-DOS or - reboot to native MS-DOS, and then install from there, because all Win9x setup CDs have a DOS based version of SETUP.EXE: http://www.mdgx.com/last2.htm#SETUPSW Of course, u need a CD/DVD driver in config.sys + mscdex [or similar]: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#CDR also here: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip1.htm#CDROM4 in autoexec.bat or config.sys so your PC can "see" your CD/DVD drive(s), unless u have copied all CABs on your HD [like I did]. BTW: Most of this stuff is posted at my site [list of all tips]: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip.htm That's it.
  11. I need more details, please:- were u using the regedit.exe from WinME [modded by Tihiy] that is installed by 98se2me? If not, which regedit.exe were u using? The 1 from 98SE setup CD? Or maybe the fixed 98SE regedit.exe from this archive: http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~flibble/reg/reg.zip documented here: http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~flibble/regsmall.html - were u using a batch file to backup your registry? If u were, can u post its contents here? - what is the size [in Bytes] of your SYSTEM.DAT + USER.DAT files found in %windir% ?
  12. 1. Many thanks for your kind appreciation. Glad it works. 2. Do you mean your msdos.sys file is changed after installing 98SE2ME? Because it doesn't touch it at all. Complete MSDOS.SYS guide: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm 3. Never heard of such bug, but I'll try to find out if it is related to 98se2me, and will get back to you. IMHO I don't think your regional clock error is related to 98se2me. Weird, maybe there is a chance this is related to the antivirus tool you're using? Also, have u installed Gape's SP before installing 98se2me? If u have, most all system errors that plague "out of the box" 98SE OS should have been fixed. Hope this helps.
  13. I've recreated KRNL386.EXE 4.10.1999 [English] patches to include OS version detection for Q891711 bug: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581
  14. Actually that is the English VOLTRACK.VXD from 98SE [original 4.10.1998] patched to ver 4.10.1999 and probably fixed the same way the Japanese one is. [?]These are only speculations, I'm waiting for this person to send more details. What's important is that the way it is VOLTRACK.VXD locked up 3 computers I tried it on with a "Windows protection error". BTW: I've tested further VOLTRACK.VXD 4.90.3000 from WinME CD, but it doesn't work correctly, it doesn't read most of the CDs or DVDs I've tested in the 2 drives [1 CD-RW + 1 DVD-RW] installed in my PC. Bummer. ;-(
  15. 16. It doesn't matter which browser u use to get on the web, IE 6.0 SP1 + *all current* security patches:http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm kill bugs + vulnerabilities which would otherwise make your OS *open* to attacks, because of MS dreaded "browser integration". This means lots of system files in %windir%\system are used by your OS to access the network/internet *no matter* which browser u use, and same files are also used by IE, no matter if u use it or not. All users of MS Win32 OSes *must* install all current IE patches. Period. Edit: I meant that only for the purpose of minimizing security risks it's mandatory to install MS IE 6.0 SP1 + all its security patches. I know SP 2.0.x doesn't need IE 5/6 nor DirectX. And why I always say that everybody should install IE 6.0 SP1 + all its security patches, is because MS stopped making patches for IE 5.0, 5.01, 5.5, 6.0 etc. Therefore all those older IE builds are unprotected, and currently MS makes patches only for IE 6.0 SP1.
  17. Can u detect the name of the spyware that did this, and eventually remove it? 18. I've also noticed the 98H strings and hex patch. But looks like quality patch. I'll get more info and will let you guys know.
  19. I admit I was part of the 1st line of customers at Office Depot on August 15 1995 [early AM] to get the Windows 95 CD the day it came out. 10 years later I'm still running the "beefed up" Win9x OS [98SE + SP 2.0.1 + 98SE2ME + 98SE2XP (private project) + 98SE22K3 (private project)] + XP SP2 in separate partition + Knoppix 3.6 Linux distro. Never had to reinstall any OS "fresh" [from scratch], never reformatted any of my HDs [had ~ 6 in 10 years = always use 2 HDs at the same time, sometimes in RAID 1+0]: - 1995: upgraded from 95 retail (FE) to OSR1 [95 SP1 fix] - 1995: purchased Plus! for 95 CD - 1996: upgraded to OSR 2.0 [purchased 95B OSR 2.0 OEM CD] - 1996: started my 1st web site - 1996: upgraded to OSR 2.1 [usbsupp fix] - 1997: upgraded to OSR 2.5 [purchased 95C OSR 2.5 OEM CD] - 1997: purchased MSDN training kit: WinNT4 Server CD + SQL Server for NT4 CD - 1998: upgraded to 98 retail (FE) [purchased upgrade 98 FE CD = was $40] - 1998: purchased Plus! for 98 CD - 1999: upgraded to 98 SP1 [Y2K, Y2K2, IE4 + OE4 fixes] - 1999: upgraded to 98 SE [purchased 98 SE Updates CD = was $20] - 2000: MSDN training kit deal got me free Win2000 Server CD + SQL Server 2000 CD - 2000: upgraded to ME [purchased ME Updates CD = was $20] - 2001: upgraded to XP OEM [purchased XP OEM CD for cheap bundled with $1 power cable ] - 2001: purchased Plus! for XP CD - 2001: installed Mandrake Linux - didn't like it: uninstalled - 2002: upgraded to XP SP1 fix - 2003: upgraded to XP SP1a fix - 2003: purchased Plus! XP Digital Media Edition - 2003: installed trial of 2003 Server CD - didn't like it: uninstalled - 2003: installed Knoppix Linux 3.3 - 2004: upgraded to XP SP2 fix - 2004: installed Knoppix Linux 3.4 - 2005: upgraded to 2003 Server SP1 fix - didn't like it: uninstalled - 2005: installed Knoppix Linux 3.6 - 2005: got free XP Pro 64-bit trial CD - 2005: got free XP Pro 64-bit CD from MS upgrade program ... and once in a blue moon I'm still using Windows for WorkGroups 3.11 + MS-DOS 6.22, which I installed way back in 1993. Never tried NT 3.0, 3.1, 3.5 or 3.51. Also tried at some point in time: DR-DOS, IBM-DOS, OS/2, Novell DOS, FreeDOS, BeOS 5.0 + various Linux distros: Corel, Red Hat, TurboLinux, Ubuntu, Lindows (Linspire). Never used any other MS software except OSes + Plus! packs.
  20. Respect. My hat off to you, nitebat. B)
  21. Cut + paste in Notepad -> save as APPEAR1.REG [or whatever, just keep the REG extension] -> run REG file to merge info into your registry: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] "NoDispAppearancePage"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] "NoDispAppearancePage"=dword:00000000 Complete guide to system policies + restrictions: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip9.htm#RESTRICT Hope this helps.
  22. I got the patch from anonymous source. Sender states it's from MS, so I created installer for it with Iexpress [same style as all other MS patches, just the QFE*.* files are missing ]. Enjoy. This is the explanation:
  23. Err... have you evere heard something sbout Bittorrent ?I have been using torrent clients for over 3 years, and also have a web site full of tweaks + guides [mdgx.com], which proves I'm at least vaguely familiar with computers, but that was not the point.A 56k or slower dialup connection canNOT d/l any faster, *especially* from a network of torrent/emule/p2p "enabled" personal computers, which are anything but fast, as I'm sure you well know. And u need to be lucky to find a few good "seeds" to get a decent transfer rate, depending on the particular file you're looking for. So even on cable [4.8 mbit/sec in my case] bittorrent is not the solution. And even if u get a decent rate, not everyone knows or cares about torrents and/or P2P networks. ...looking for open source only, thanks !I'd say roughly 30% of the software listed at my site is free GPL or open source, that's why I spelled it "free(ware)", because I put in 1 word all this: free, free GPL, open source, freeware + similar [donationware, cardware, emailware etc].And from the link u have posted at the top of this topic: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/?showtopic=5622 I see u also like shareware, because there are a lot of "try-b4-u-buy" shareware/commercial apps on that list. I probably have ~ 6 shareware/commercial apps/tools at my site, and those I've personally tested, used and found to be invaluable or the best in their categories. About adding features to SP: you'll have to ask Gape, the creator + maintainer. Hope this helps.
  24. IMHO: 1. Make sure your mobo BIOS Setup USB options are all enabled. 2. Check Device Manager see which IRQ is used by USB devices. 3. If same IRQ used also by other devices, make sure IRQ steering is enabled. If not, enable it and reboot. 4. Check the Mitsumi device resources and make sure they are not used by any other device in your PC. If u see any conflicts, try to manually adjust resources [if allowed]. Reboot if necessary. 5. In Device Manager -> your Universal Host Controller "name" [depends on your mobo chipset ID] -> Advanced tab -> make sure the box "Disable USB error detection" is checked -> if not, check it -> reboot. 6. If still doesn't work: if USB shares same IRQ with any other device -> go to Reserve Resources tab -> add that particular IRQ -> reboot. 7. After reboot Windows should redetect all USB devices, but now they should have a different IRQ assigned. 8. Repeat step 5 if necessary. 9. If still doesn't work: install 98SE2ME [5-21-2005 edition should be bug free as far as I know]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 for the updated WinME *.SYS files in %windir%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS + other hardware detection files [HID*.*, USBUI.DLL] in %windir%\SYSTEM which are mostly for USB devices. 98SE2ME also installs: NTMAPHLP.PDR USBMPHLP.PDR NTMAP.SYS USBNTMAP.SYS from WinME, which may help. 10. Repeat step 5 if necessary. 11. Make sure there are no conflicts in Device Manager for your Mitsumi device. 12. Try also to disable all power saving/APM/ACPI options from your OS and mobo BIOS. Reboot if u do. If still doesn't work, please see this troubleshooting guide, there may be a couple of things you can still do: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#FWUE Good resource: http://www.usbman.com/ Also, it may be a good idea to contact Mitsumi [or check their web site], maybe they have a solution, even if 98SE is not supported anymore. See if they have a WinME specific driver [eventually newer], and try to install it. If u can't install the ME driver, mod the INF file to allow u to install [that's easy, I can help with that if u want]. If they have a 2000 or XP specific driver, that may work also, but u may need some INF modding to force it to install [see above]. Hope this helps.
  25. To use XP w/out having to activate [WPA], do what I did: 1. buy legitimate copy of XP Home, Pro or OEM [OEM is Pro but much cheaper and is bundled with PC hardware] or get MSDN subscription CD [kinda expensive if u don't own or work for a computer/IT related business] with VLK edition [if u do, then skip step 2]. 2. get corpfiles + keygen [don't ask... go google]. 3. create unattend.txt [a.k.a. winnt.sif] + tweaks scripts: http://www.mdgx.com/xp1.htm#IXPA 4. burn XP boot CD/DVD with SP2 + all current hotfixes slipstreamed + unattended/tweak scripts + apps/tools: http://unattended.msfn.org/ 5. install away. This is NOT meant to encourage piracy. I hate piracy. As long as u own a *genuine* XP license, whatever u do with it on *your* personal computer is strictly your own business, and well within legal boundaries.
