  1. You don't need to wait for reguerra to do this. You [or your friend] can always install 98SE2ME on your friend's computer, because it backs up the entire OS into C:\W98SEOLD , where the original OS can be always restored from, just in case. Just allow 98SE2ME to create a new backup when u run option 1 or option 2 [those are the only options that need full backup]. Hope this helps.
  2. Yeah, you should be banned from the internet for having "just" 2 posts. How dare you?
  3. If you plan on installing both 98SE + XP Pro, you can install 98SE after XP, so you don't need to worry about installing 98SE [probably upgrade] on a "virgin" PC with no OS.If u want to install 98SE first [also upgrade], and if it prompts u for a "qualifying upgrade", u can always pop in the XP CD or point to the where the I386 folder resides on your HD *if* u copied it there [which I strongly recommend for faster install], and it should allow u to install 98SE afterwards. 98SE SETUP.EXE [even upgrade] works from native MS-DOS, if u boot from a 95/98/98SE boot floppy, unless u had already installed 98SE before. And if u install 98SE from MS-DOS, make sure u load SMARTDRV in memory first, to speed up installing from the CD [or better, copy the WIN98 folder onto your HD]: SMARTDRV 12288 16 C+ D+ /N Add D+ only if u have 2 HDs/partitions. To my knowledge, after u install Gape's SP, you shouldn't need to lower your RAM amount to 1 GB or less, should work ok as is. If it doesn't, then u can add/modify the MaxPhysPage= SYSTEM.INI line, even from native MS-DOS [using EDIT.COM] if won't allow u to load Windows GUI: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip8.htm#BADMEM See also this: http://www.mdgx.com/lastweek.htm#SYSINI The only problem I'm aware of [and I know Gape + Petr are working to fix it] is that you may encounter errors with your large 160 GB HD, because there is no [free] fix [yet] for 98SE ESDI_506.PDR to handle HDs > 134 GB ["big LBA"], *unless* your mobo has a VIA chipset, in which case installing the VIA 4-in-1 drivers solves this issue. Hope this helps.
  4. I can only speak for 98SE2ME, because that's the only one I develop + maintain. Please see READ1ST.TXT [75 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT which is also part of the 98SE2ME.EXE package [2 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 The "FAQ" chapter explains your inquiry as far as 98SE2ME is concerned. And if you have any other questions concerning 98SE2ME, please don't hesitate to ask in this forum: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349 Gape is the author of SP, and this is the forum to ask. Tihiy is the author of RP, and this is the forum to ask: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=39333 Hope this helps.
  5. Not to mention Mr. Loew is in direct violation of MS copyrights + trademark agreements, because if Mr. Loew would have read the EULA/License, the mandatory document to be read upon installation of every MS OS and software package, he would have noticed that: which means that anybody who wants to modify any MS file in any way must contact them first to obtain their written permission, and which afterwards must be posted/bundled by the respective person(s)/business(es) together with the modified file(s)/software so everybody can read it and understand that MS formally approved of this modified software/file(s)/etc.This fragment is quoted directly from LICENSE.TXT, the text file installed by MS Windows 98 SE setup into %windir% [usually C:\WINDOWS]. Note that all Windows OS releases install this file or similar.
  6. Gape: I don't think adding IPROP.DLL from NT4 SP6a is a good idea. 7. [rant] 1. Not to my knowledge, unless u have the time to allow keygen generate keys that are not on the SP2 no-no list.2. MS built a detection mechanism into SP2, which will not allow to install on PCs with most used corp keys, so if/when u install SP2, u need to have a key that's not on their no-no list [see 1 above]. I've tried to avoid genuine validation as much as I could, because of the same reason why I hacked my XP OS in the 1st place: I believe that paying money for the XP CD, gives me the right to install and use the OS on my own PC as I see fit, without having to go to extra trouble and "activate" it. I am also one of those people who like to upgrade their PCs quite frequently, which means that normally I would have to reactivate every 5-6 months or so, whenever 3 of my hardware devices [mobo/BIOS, CPU, HD, video controller, NIC card/modem, etc] will "look" different to the OS. And I don't like that, and please tell me if you know anybody who does? I legally own every OS MS made since 1992 [my 1st were DOS 5.0 + Windows 3.0], but never had to do anything like this, and I'm not going to start now. I've already "trial" installed a couple of Linux distros, because MS now has built activation into all their current + future OSes and business software [Office]. I also do respect everybody's privacy, but I also expect in return everybody to respect mine, and I'm not going to play games every 4-6 months whenever I buy a few new PC parts. The same time I do hate piracy, and I understand perfectly the need to thwart it [i never installed an OS I don't legally own], but that doesn't mean I have to abide by their rules, just because they want to know what's inside my PC, and/or how often I upgrade it, and even argue with them over the phone that this is the same PC I'm always using, and I only bought a couple of new parts. I know somebody who upgrades his PCs [3] more often than I do, and every other month or so he has to call MS [after activating 1 too many times it won't allow u to activate thru the internet anymore], and explain why his XP OSes want him to reactivate again... and again... The only piece of software I was not able to d/l with my corp "rigged" XP SP2 OS was Photo Story 3 [PS3]. So only that once, I went and installed "normal" from my OEM CD, and activated over the internet, just to get PS3 [which I realized I don't care for anyway]. But that was a 1 time thing. So now I'm using the "rigged" XP OS most of the time, and when I feel like my "activated" OS needs some upgrading, I occasionally boot it up, and d/l + install manually all patches, which I have posted at my site for easy access: http://www.mdgx.com/xp.htm Let's take another example: I am a computer geek [like most of us here, no doubt], so I use a multi-boot environment, and among other OSes, I use most frequently 98SE + XP SP2. Why do I have to use "genuine validation" to d/l a single XP patch [which would require me to reboot into the "activated" XP, go to their servers, d/l the darn thing, and finally, reboot back into 98SE and go back to whatever I was in the middle of], when I can d/l the file just the same, using 98SE? In conclusion: piracy has been on the fritz, especially since MS came up with mandatory activation. And if u ask me, there are so many other [better] ways of stopping piracy and making sure only legitimate users install XP + are allowed to upgrade/patch their computers, and which are probably less annoying. And let me tell u that I'm not alone in thinking this way, MS will lose customers in the long run, people who like me see Linux [or even Apple OS X] as a cheaper, viable alternative, especialy now, since Apple started shifting towards Intel as their potential CPU provider. And if MS won't allow "suspect" users or pirated OSes to install security patches, do u know what will happen when most of these people will eventually get infected with nasty zombies/trojans/spyware/etc and spread the attacks/infections to others, some of which might be even legitimate users who don't bother patching their computers? just my 2 ¢ [/rant] over and out
  8. Or u can d/l [~ 600 MB ISO that u can burn on a CD] + boot from a bootable Linux "live CD" without installing anything, i.e. Knoppix: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html check also this extremely comprehensive list of Linux distros on bootable CDs: http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php Knoppix has an extensive database of network/modems/LAN/NIC/ethernet cards drivers, and most likely will pick up yours, so u should be on the internet in no time. Linux kernel 2.0.34 and newer should have FAT16/FAT32 support built-in, so u can just open Koqueror file manager and try to rename/delete/whatever that pesky file, which sounds like it was originally named in Linux/UNIX/BSD environment. This happens because MS Windows 9x environment does not support certain file naming conventions used as standard on UNIX + clone OSes and network/internet servers running UNIX/Linux/FreeBSD. For example, try to name a file .htaccess in Windows. Scratch all of the above: I just realized... there is a way to do this in Windows: install any Win32 FTP client [if u don't have 1 already], for example I use WS_FTP LE [freeware]: http://www.vipmeister.com/dl/wsftp/ws_ftple.exe and rename/delete the file from within its interface. Hope this helps.
  9. Gape: The old delete files > 50 MB with IE6 bug decribed here: http://www.frankprovo.com/win98ie6filesproblem.htm has been fixed by MS in newer versions of: BROWSEUI.DLL = latest IE 6.0 SP1 security patch: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IEC BROWSELC.DLL = build 6.00.2900.2180 from XP SP2: http://www.mdgx.com/xp.htm#SP2 I'm using this file for 6 months now, and had no errors. I'm also using these other files [not counting the 21 WMP9 files ] from XP SP2, with zero problems so far: ADVPACK.DLL ASCTRLS.OCX CABINET.DLL PNGFILT.DLL SHDOCLC.DLL SQLSRV32.DLL and these files from 2003 SP1: MSHTML.TLB MSHTMLED.DLL MSHTMLER.DLL About MDAC: MS stated that this [2.1 SP1] is the last MDAC release they posted as separate update package on their servers. From now on all MDAC updates will be released only as part of future service packs for XP, 2003 + Longhorn. Hope this helps.
  10. reguerra: I have received this feedback from a concerned 98SE2ME user who tested his ADSL modem in a similar environment, with 98SE2ME option 1 or 2 installed [they both install exactly the same ME files], and his conclusion is... 98SE2ME option 3 files have nothing to do with the internet/network connection, because installs only UI + Shell controls
  11. [rant] Cool stuff, Eck. B) Darth Sidious: Lord Vader... Darth Vader: Yes, my Master? Darth Sidious: RRRRRISSSSSE! Bitchin... What bothered me most in ep 3 was Hayden Christensen's acting skills [or the lack of ]. He got his act together a little better than in ep 1 + 2, but still, the same "flat" dialog style. I've "bumped" into another movie [forgot the name] on HBO he has done since SW saga, I believe was made in 2003, and guess what... same acting style, as "flat" as ever. After watching only his SW movies, I thought his style was part of what George Lucas required him to do to improve his character, but after watching a fragment from his HBO movie, I gotta say, this guy has no acting skillz. For the good parts thou... I think ep 3 is one of the best among all SW movies. The plot, the tension, the action, and not even mention the ILM CG effects, are prime quality. The CG effects [remember the opening battle scene?] I gotta say are [some of] the best + most complex [and hard to do] I've seen so far. What do u mean? The Matrix rulez! [the 1st one anyway] And How 'bout Chronicles of Riddick [the sequel to Pitch Black]? I think that's a great sci-fi flic. And talking about Pitch Black... my favorite TV sci-fi show is [still] Farscape. And I'm not even going to mention any comic book based sci-fi films... Have fun. [/rant] over and out.
  12. I don't know what burning software you're using, but you need to know this: if u use Adaptec/Roxio Easy CD Creator/Direct CD/etc AND Ahead Nero Burning ROM/Suite/etc AND Windows 95/98/98SE/ME, then u nedd to uninstall either Roxio/Adaptec ASPI drivers OR Nero ASPI drivers, they usually can't happily "coexist" on the same 9x computer. Newest versions of ASPI drivers + info: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#CDR Scroll down a bit to: * Adaptec Standard ASPI Layer 32-bit Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 Drivers for (E)IDE/ATAPI/SCSI CD-R(W)/DVD-R(W)/DVD-RAM drives (free, English) Edit: You can also install ASPI drivers manually, just extract them from the EXEs with Winzip, PowerArchiver or similar tool: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP and then copy them over to overwrite the ones u already have. To learn exactly where each file goes, open INSTALL.BAT in Notepad. U might need to boot to native MS-DOS to replace some of these files. Try first to install the newest one [ASPI 4.71.2]: http://download.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi_471a2.exe More info: http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/d...=aspi_471a2.exe If that one doesn't work, then install the older 4.60: http://download.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi32.exe More info: http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/d...ekey=aspi32.exe Hope this helps.
  13. Sorry, but I'm afraid this is not currently possible, because the 98SE2ME installer as it is today, is made up of 2 parts:1. the part that installs in C:\9!M = does not make any changes to your 98SE OS. This part is compiled with Inno Setup installer: http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php 2. the part that installs the WinME system files = does make changes to your 98SE OS. This part is made up of a bunch of batch, INF + REG files, all of which run from within 98SE2ME.PIF. Because of this structure, it is not possible to run unattended with /C /Q /T:<path> etc switches, which are specific only to installer executables compiled with MS iexpress/cab sdk and similar tools. Maybe in the future, and/if/when I have time, I'll redesign the entire installer from scratch using Iexpress or similar tools. And if/when I'll do this, I'll post it all here. About "fool proof" 98SE2ME: obviously that is very hard to achieve, because 98SE2ME replaces too many files from the WinME CD [~ 710 as of current release], not to create any bugs, errors, minor annoyances, incompatibilities etc. So unfortunately there is always a "trade-off" and error margin we need to account for. But, I can tell you that most major bugs have been squashed as far as I'm aware. Please read the "KNOWN BUGS + FIXES" chapter in READ1ST.TXT for details: READ1ST.TXT About 98SE2XP: I'm now experimenting with 2003 SP1, so I think these 2 should be treated as 1 from the point of view of creating install scripts. As soon as I'm sure all these system files work ok, I'll post some scripts here + at my site, and will let everybody know. Untill then, you can cut + paste my scripts from: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S if u wish to install XP SP2 components [not available separately as installers] on your computer. Similarly, u can d/l 2003 SP1 [330 MB ]: http://www.mdgx.com/ws3toy.htm#SP1 and then modify the XP SP2 scripts at URL above to extract + copy these files from 2003 SP1 to: - %windir% : HH.EXE - %windir%\SYSTEM : HHCTRL.OCX HHSETUP.DLL ITIRCL.DLL ITSS.DLL MSHTML.TLB MSHTMLED.DLL MSHTMLER.DLL RICHED20.DLL USP10.DLL - %windir%\FONTS : ARIAL.TTF ARIALBD.TTF ARIALBI.TTF ARIALI.TTF COUR.TTF COURBD.TTF COURBI.TTF COURI.TTF GEORGIA.TTF GEORGIAB.TTF GEORGIAI.TTF GEORGIAZ.TTF MICROSS.TTF TAHOMA.TTF TAHOMABD.TTF TIMES.TTF TIMESBD.TTF TIMESBI.TTF TIMESI.TTF VERDANA.TTF VERDANAB.TTF VERDANAI.TTF VERDANAZ.TTF HTML Help files above can also be installed separately: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#HHU or as part of Gape's SP 2.0.1: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html Also, if you're wondering what actual files I'm going to include inside 98SE2XP/98SE22K3 installers, I need to tell you that I'm not going to add any files from XP SP2 or 2003 SP1, but only the scripts which will allow you to download these service packs, a dos console command line tool which will extract the files to a temp folder, a couple of DOS detection tools to make sure they can't be installed on anything else except 98SE [see the 98SE2ME free DOS tools I'm using], and that's it. Note that all these files are from the English releases, and are meant *only* for the English release. I'm not familiar with any other language releases, so I don't know which files work or which don't. Hope this helps.
  14. 1. If u would have used/installed this patch [wucsp.exe = linked from the URL u posted], u would know that this is only 1 out of 3 components that make up 98FE SP1.If u check the URL at my site I posted above: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#SP1 u would notice that I provide links to all 3 SP1 components, and all 3 are available from MS servers, there is no need to go 3rd party [wucsp.exe u link to is located on PC World ftp server]. 2. We, the "regulars" here at MSFN 95/98/ME forums, we all know [more or less] about Gape's SP 2.x. Gape's SP 2.x home page is here: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html He links to 3 different servers for d/l, and the 1 u mention happens to be MajorGeeks, who's webmasters happen to be buddies of mine. I usually notify them when Gape posts a new SP release. B) But the point was that at this time there is NO SP for Win98 FE (First Edition), at least not yet, until Gape, Petr and/or somebody else [myself included] decide to take up such time consuming project. Hope this helps.
  15. [quote name='bookie' date='Aug 6 2004, 08:58 AM']I am actually working on a batchfile enabling to install all the 98 updates at once. 16. Official MS Windows 98 SP1 components are available from MS servers and can be downloaded + installed only on Windows 98 FE (First Edition): http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#SP1 To my knowlegde there is no unofficial SP for Windows 98 FE.
  17. Yeah, I've removed both, posted the update, experimented again, then my mouse [+ Intellipoint 4.12 installed] started to move erratically [with USER.EXE + USER32.DLL 4.10.2231 for 98SE], and in the end I thought...this [uSER.EXE + USER32.DLL 4.90.3001] is one of the best features of all ME replacements, so I put them back in. So my little "experiment" is over now.
  18. Thanks a lot for your kind appreciation. About your RASPPPOE problem, try this: After installing 98SE2ME, replace these files from %windir%\SYSTEM : NDSWAN16.DLL NDSWAN32.DLL NETAPI.DLL NETAPI32.DLL NETDI.DLL NETOS.DLL RASAPI16.DLL RASAPI32.DLL RNAUI.DLL with their older Win98 SE couterparts [which probably were on your computer before u installed 98SE2ME] from the 98 SE setup CD CABs. Or if u backed up your OS in C:\W98SEOLD [by running 98SE2ME options 1 or 2], restore these files from there. This zip has a text file called CABL98SE.TXT with the exact location of these files: http://www.mdgx.com/files/EXTCAB.ZIP More info on extracting files from CABs: http://www.mdgx.com/last4.htm#EXTRACT To replace some of these files u need to hold down Shift + F5 at the same time during BIOS boot POST (Power On Self Test) sequence to boot into native/true MS-DOS [or boot from a 98SE boot floppy to native MS-DOS], and then move them to %windir%\SYSTEM [usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM]. Replace these files in small groups, for example start with: NDSWAN16.DLL NDSWAN32.DLL if that doesn't work, then replace: RASAPI16.DLL RASAPI32.DLL if that doesn't work, then replace: RNAUI.DLL and only after that: NETAPI.DLL NETAPI32.DLL NETDI.DLL NETOS.DLL Reboot normal back into Windows. See if that fixes your DSL modem problem, and then please post here your findings. If that is the case, and those files are the "culprit", please let me know so I can remove them from 98SE2ME. Thanks. About links to "my documents", "my networks places", "my computer" not working after installing option 3: I need more details: what language is your OS? If it is any language other than English, it doesn't work properly. 98SE2ME is designed specifically for English editions only. Please see the "FAQ" chapter in READ1ST.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT for more details. Also, if u installed Tihiy's Revolutions Pack, that makes massive changes to the interface, and if that is the case, u need to ask Tihiy, the author: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=39333 Hope this helps.
  19. All I can think of right now:1. install 98SE SP 2.0.1: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html 2. Install 98SE2ME: http://www.mdgx.com/4 3. Install Native USB 2.0 Drivers: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=43605 4. Make sure you have no USB: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#FWUE or power/ACPI/APM errors/conflicts: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip15.htm#MYP 5. Install manufacturer drivers for your USB device, starting with drivers made of WinME (if u find any, and if they'll allow u to install them on 98SE), otherwise install 98SE specific drivers. In certain cases even 2000/XP specific drivers may work [iNF files can be modified to accept 98SE/ME], it's all a "try-and-error" game. USB stuff [see the USB related links]: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#DRV Hope this helps.
  20. Maximus-Decim: Just in case you don't know about all these updates [if u do, please disregard this post]: MDAC: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#DAC MSXML: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#XML Jet: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#JET Hope this helps.
  21. Welcome to MSFN forums, herbalix...no "connection" with Asterix + Obelix [popular French comics by Goscinny et Uderzo], I presume? 1. Increased compatibility with newer apps/games/tools and other [newer] system updates/components. Eventually better stability, performance, internet speed, reliability, and even better security defense. 2. WMP10 adds besides newer codecs and compatibility with newer internet streaming protocols some [needed] security patches + newer versions of WMP codecs. You need to keep in mind that WMP 6.4/7/8/9/10 NetShow [DirectShow] DirectX APIs + codecs are also used [because of DirectX components being so "tightly" integrated into the Win32 OS] by majority of multimedia software tools that play/record/edit/stream video/audio/music/DVD/etc. Same goes for my scripts to replace majority of Win98 SE WMP9 files with XP SP2 newer WMP9 files: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S Most of these guidelines are also included in 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT [please see the "FAQ" chapter]: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT 3. I'm testing newer/updated system files on my Win98 SE computer for over 4 years, most of the time with positive results [see 1. above]. I've been "toying" mostly with WinME, and more recently XP SP2 + 2003 SP1 files. My most recent "private projects" are testing XP SP2 [including WMP10 files] + 2003 SP1 files: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46702...ndpost&p=324641 When I'm completely satisfied with using these files, I'll post here + at my site [ http://www.mdgx.com/ ] the "automation" scripts so everybody can do this too. 4. Is this the Blackbox u r referring to? http://blackboxwm.sourceforge.net/ If this is true, I have no experience with it. Therefore you need to more specific, please post some details about the app you are using [name, version, URL], error messages (if any) and any [other] errors, issues, problems etc u may have encountered while using this app, your OS release, build + language, and if you believe this is related to some hardware device in your computer, please make a list of your computer hardware specs. Also, in order to be able to help, I need to know on what kind of system you are using Blackbox, with or without: Gape's SP 2.x [which version], 98SE2ME [which options u installed], Tihiy's Revolutions Pack [which version], Maximus-Decim Cumulative Update or Native USB Drivers [which versions], and also, what other system/add-on/components updates, patches, fixes, replacements etc u installed before installing Blackbox or/and while using it. To get an idea what kind of system updates I'm talking about, please see these pages [they all refer to 98 SE, English edition]: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S http://tihiy.windos2000.net/ http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=43566 http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=43887 http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=43605 http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=44388 More info on this subject in 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT Hope this helps.

  23. Windows 95C OSR 2.5 OEM only Setup CD-ROM build 4.03.1214 released in 1997.See it here: http://www.mdgx.com/win.htm and here: http://www.mdgx.com/ver.htm#TAB
  24. This is where TClockEx writes into the registry: REGEDIT4 ; all users reg key: [HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\TClockEx\Settings] "ClockFormatString"="MM-dd-yy ff" "TooltipFormatString"="dddddddddd MMMM dd yyyy" ; current user reg key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TClockEx\Settings] "ClockFormatString"="MM-dd-yy ff" "TooltipFormatString"="dddddddddd MMMM dd yyyy" These are the values I use. U need to change them if u like a different display. Nonetheless, I still recommend to make these changes from the UI: right-click on the tray TClockEx display -> TClockEx Properties -> Clock Format tab -> make your changes -> OK. This is the bugs list + how to use case sensitive date strings: http://www.rcis.co.za/dale/tclockex/bugs.htm FAQ: http://www.rcis.co.za/dale/tclockex/faq.htm Note that TClockEx works also with Windows 2000/XP/2003/Longhorn. Hope this helps.
