  1. Problem solved. http://pcpropaganda.wordpress.com/2007/06/...efragmentation/ Please close this thread.
  2. I installed a program called pagedefrag from Microsoft TechNet. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897426.aspx I use this program on my desktop and it runs perfectly. The laptop is a different story. This program defrags the page files on reboot. On the laptop this program does not work. After the system reboots, the laptop freezes and the defrag process never starts. In order to get back to my desktop, I have to remove the battery and unplug the computer. I then have to reboot from "last good configuration". Why the difference between the desktop and the laptop? I'm stumped on this one. Thanks. 3. The truth is I never liked the way the laptop performed from the day I got it. I use it primarily as a travel computer taking it with me on trips. It is not my main computer. Secondly I never liked owning a computer without the installation disk. Today I did a clean install of Windows 2000. The laptop is now flying. What a huge difference. In any event I want to thank you for replying to my post. Sorry for the trouble. We can now put this thread to bed.
  4. I own a laptop with XP Pro installed. The laptop was purchased with XP Pro pre-installed and do not have the XP install disk. I downloaded Explorer 7 and hated it. I then went to add/remove programs and uninstalled it. Since that time I constantly receive error messages when I click on a website saying, "Explorer has encountered a problem and must close". I then have three options, debug, send error report, and don't send. After selecting any of them I am brought back to my desktop and have to start all over again. I never had this problem before downloading Explorer 7. There appears to be a conflict with Explorer 6 and 7. What I would like to do is a repair of Explorer 6 or a complete reinstall of Explorer 6. Before doing this I would like to remove all remnants of Explorer 7 from the laptop first. Please bear in mind I do not have the XP install disk. I can assure you the laptop is virus free and all junk files have been removed. I even ran CHKDSK with zero results. Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.
  5. Good news. My neighbor owns a newer Dell Latitude also with swappable drives. His however came with a cable which allows the floppy to be attached externally. I borrowed it and it worked. System is now up and running. My thanks to all for your valuable assistance. Sorry to put everyone to so much trouble. Much appreciated. You can put this thread to bed.
  6. At what point of the boot sequence do I remove the floppy drive, insert the CD ROM drive and then type in sys: c:? Do I do this after selecting "Start computer with CD-ROM support" or before? I'm stuck here.
  7. I own a Dell Latitude CP laptop with a swappable floppy and CD ROM drive. I ran fdisk and format C: using the boot disc. Now comes the problem. How do I swap to the CD drive for the W98SE installation? When I start the computer from the boot disc, at what point can I pull out the floppy drive and insert the CD ROM drive? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  8. I have a couple of questions. Is it possible to download the previous Service Pack version - 2.0.1? All download websites only have the currect 2.0.2 SP. If this is not possible, how do I download the Windows boot logo that came with 2.0.1? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  9. I need a professional opinion. Are there any advantages upgrading from Win98SE to WinME? I own a desktop with plenty of RAM and a 20GB HD. I also own an old laptop with minimal RAM and a small HD. Both have Win98SE installed and work very well. I checked the specs for upgrading to WinME and the laptop meets the minimum requirements. Do you feel an upgrade is worth it or should I stay with what I have? Thanks.
  10. My OS is Win98SE. This problem has me stumped! While visiting a website I decided to create a shortcut and include it with my favorites. The file name is around 80 characters long. I no longer need the shortcut and tried to delete it. Got an error message saying file name too long - rename. Tried renaming and got same error message. Tried deleting it - same message. Tried deleting it in safe mode - still no good. I can't copy it, move it, delete it, or rename it. I'm stuck. How can I permanently remove this icon. Thanks.
  11. That explains it. Since the problem only involves the prompt command, I can live with it. The rest of the package works perfectly. Thanks.
  12. I have just installed the new Win98SE Service Pack on both my desktop and laptop computers. They are both essentially identical. The new Command Prompt installed differently on the smaller laptop. As you know the command prompt can be acquired two ways. One is from the desktop by going to Start / Programs. The other is by rebooting your computer to a command prompt. The second method is by far the best. For example, you can not run scanreg from the desktop prompt. After installing the new Service Pack on my desktop computer, by going to Start / Programs / DOS Prompt my screen looks like I rebooted to a DOS Prompt. From here I can do anything. When done I type in "exit" and I return to my desktop. Fantastic! The laptop does not do this. What I want is for the laptop to acquire the same DOS Prompt as the desktop computer does. Obviously I have more programs installed on my desktop computer. This leads to a question. Are there certain programs that must be installed first before the DOS Prompt can work properly? I even did a reinstall of Windows in hopes this would fix it. It didn't. I ran out of ideas. Any help you can provide will be appreciated. Thanks.
  13. Please note edited post. Thanks.
  14. Just installed the new SP2.0 RC2. Have been using the older version for quite some time. After the install I noticed the new Command Prompt entry in my Add/Remove Programs. This new feature is a real time saver. Great addition. Now for the problem. The new Command Prompt works perfectly on my desktop. It does not work on my laptop. Both computers are basically identical. Have any idea why it did not install on my laptop? Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks.
