  1. Try this: http://www.mdgx.com/last4.htm#EXTRACT and make sure you download EXTCAB.ZIP [link posted in guide above]. Then open those CABL*.TXT files from the ZIP in Notepad. You can also run [if using Win98 SE]: TYPE CABL98SE.TXT | FIND.EXE/I "WINFILE" from any DOS box. CABLIST.BAT [also from zip above] creates a full list of all CABs from any Win9x/ME/Plus!95/Plus!98 setup CD. Open CABLIST.BAT in Notepad to see if u need to modify any lines to match your computer setup. Hope this helps.
  2. As far as I can recall WU from WinME didn't work on my Win98 SE computer. But please feel free to try this on your computer. All you need is a WinME CD or CABs. Then run this batch file [example]: @ECHO OFF MD C:\BKPWIN98 MD C:\BKPWIN98\SYSTEM COPY/Y %windir%\WU*.* C:\BKPWIN98 COPY/Y %windir%\SYSTEM\WU*.* C:\BKPWIN98\SYSTEM EXTRACT.EXE /Y /A D:\WIN9X\BASE2.CAB WU*.* /L C:\WUWINME EXTRACT.EXE /Y D:\WIN9X\PRECOPY1.CAB WU*.* /L C:\WUWINME START /W RUNDLL32 %windir%\SYSTEM\ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection C:\WUWINME\WUPDATE.INF,Register.WU %windir%\RUNDLL32.EXE %windir%\RUNDLL32 %windir%\SYSTEM\SHELL32.DLL,SHExitWindowsEx 2 CLS EXITReplace D:\WIN9X with your own drive + folder where the WinME CABs reside if different. If this doesn't work, you can always restore original WU*.* files from C:\BKPWIN98 + C:\BKPWIN98\SYSTEM [see above]. Hope this helps.
  3. The 1st post [top] of the 98SE2ME forum:http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=46349 has your answer: For more details please see READ1ST.TXT:READ1ST.TXT Even more details: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S If you wish to mod/adapt/tweak + recompile 98SE2ME for any language other than English, please see INNOFILE.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/INNOFILE.ZIP Hope this helps.
  4. What does this mean - do I delete old *.inf and replace with the new *me.inf since they are the newer files and this update was to install the new *.inf -- ONLY IF THAT FILE WAS NOT ON DRIVE even if it was older?THANKS, Charlie That means the newer INFs from WinME CABs will be installed into %windir%\INF side by side with the existing ones you already have, nothing is deleted, and if you already have INFs with same names, they will be renamed with *ME.INF, e.g.:HIDDEV.INF => if this INF is already present in %windir%\INF it will be renamed to HIDDEVME.INF and then will be copied to %windir%\INF after reboot. This way you will have both, because Win98SE INFs may have vendor IDs that may have been removed from WinME INFs [or the other way around]. And when you install a new USB/WDM/FireWire device, Windows Hardware Wizard will search *all* INFs from %windir%\INF for specific vendor IDs. Hope this helps.
  5. Vcache setting [correct value is "MaxFileCache"] is present only in system.ini, not in the registry as far as I know [example]:[vcache] MinFileCache=4096 MaxFileCache=8192 ChunkSize=512 More details: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip1.htm#THRASH Vcache stands for "Virtual Cache" which is the amount of memory allocated by Windows 9x [thru the system.ini settings above] for storing files + folders reads + writes, somehow similar to smartdrv [which works only in true/pure/native MS-DOS mode, of course]. More info: http://www.adriansrojakpot.com/Speed_Demon...mization_01.htm More similar resources listed here at the bottom of this topic: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip1.htm#THRASH The registry "max cached icons" value represents only how many file/folder icons are cached into shelliconcache before the icon cache runs out. Please see the relevant MSKB article for details: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=132668 Hope this helps.
  6. To my knowledge RICHED32.DLL 5.00.2134.1 is Unicode, which [even if it doesn't have any weird DLL dependencies in 9x] may generate errors with some programs. That explains the file size difference when compared to 5.00.1461.82. I'm afraid erpdude8 is right, we should stick with the older 1 [5.00.1461.82] in RICHED9X.EXE.
  7. IMHO, best solution is to ditch DVDPLAY.EXE and use Media Player Classic (MPC) [free]: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#MED MPC also installs as part of Alt QTM: http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm#quicktimealt + Alt RealPlay: http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm#realalt If using Win9x [95, 98 or ME] you must install Alt QTM 1.56 [current version]. Then open MPC and under: View -> Options -> Formats select to associate DVD formats [iFO, VOB] with MPC. From then on your DVDs should open automatically in MPC. ... Unless you wish to spend money on PowerDVD, WinDVD or similar tools, that provide full DVD playback capabilities. Hope this helps.
  8. If you'd like to save updates to your HD, go to: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/ and follow this guide: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=323166 or do this step-by-step: 1. Go to [must use MS IE 5/6 in 98 SE/ME or 2000/XP/2003]: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/ 2. Click the "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems" link. 3. Select your desired OS from the "Operating System" list. 4. Select your desired language. 5. Click the Search button. 6. Let's say you selected Windows 98/98 SE. 7. Click on "Critical Updates and Service Packs (76)" as of April 17 2006. 8. Select "Sort by: Posted date". This way newest updates will be on top. 9. Add to your download list by clicking the "Add" button for all updates you wish. 10. Click "Go to download basket" when done. 11. Make sure the directory where u want to save them already exists on your HD(s). Otherwise create it. 12. Type the full path or click "Browse" and point to the directory of your choice. 13. Click the "Download now" button. 14. After downloads are completed *must exit all instances* of MS IE browser. 15. Open Windows Update.log from %windir% [= usually C:\WINDOWS] in Notepad or better text editor: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#TXT 16. Copy + paste http links into your web browser to download the files to your default Downloads directory. 17. Or go to the deepest tree subdirectories created by WU under the main directory you selected as destination and copy the EXE files anywhere else you like, rename, delete them etc. 18. Done. This is [or at least used to be in WU v3.0] the folder where WU were saved to HD: http://www.mdgx.com/98-3.htm#98UPDAT Hope this helps.
  9. Thanks for the reminder.Similar here: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip1.htm#THRASH and here: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip19.htm#AOG Please notice that "Max Cached Icons" registry setting accepts values only up to 4096, according to this MSKB article: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=132668 Therefore 8192 [and anything else above 4096] is invalid. Hope this helps.
  10. BUG: Q912812 update [MS06-013]: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IEC installs one of these 2 URLMON.DLL builds into %windir%\SYSTEM [usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM]: - 6.00.2800.1537 = without "QFEInstalled"=dword:00000001 REG setting installed or - 6.00.2800.1538 = with "QFEInstalled"=dword:00000001 REG setting installed [see page below for details how to install this REG fix into your registry]: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IEC corrupts the MS Windows Update [WU] web pages: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/ at least on my 98 SE computer with MS IE 6.0 SP1 + all other updates/patches installed. WU does not check your computer for installed updates, and all you get is the "Administrator only" error page. WORKAROUND: Reinstall older 98 SE/ME patch from Q905915 update [MS05-054] [3.49 MB, English]: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...94e650e29d8.exe and make sure URLMON.DLL is replaced with one of these older ones: - 6.00.2800.1526 = with "QFEInstalled"=dword:00000001 REG setting installed or - 6.00.2800.1525 = without "QFEInstalled"=dword:00000001 REG setting installed. Reboot after patch installed. Hope this helps.
  11. I'm with you Depends if Gape [forum moderator] considers this a "worthy" topic.
  12. Corrected. Please see 1st post:http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581 Also added updated DXM9X.EXE, DXM9XIE5.EXE, DXMNT.EXE + DXMNTIE5.EXE with newer DANIM.DLL + DXTRANS.DLL files from Q912812: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581 which are also posted here: http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#DXM erpdude8: I have recreated all DXM9X* patches to install on WinME without need for Coolkill/STMGR/etc..., same as OLEUP.EXE.
  13. True.Glad it was only a joke.
  14. Done:http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581 Thank for the patches.
  15. Original tip is here:http://www.mdgx.com/newtip16.htm#MCS all other sources that list these REG settings copied them from my web site. You may also want to try these [similar] REG settings for CD/DVD drives: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip6.htm#CDMAX Hope this helps.
  16. Sorry, I have no experience using riched20.dll 5.40 or 5.50 . I don't have Office XP/2003 CDs.IMO: But since those newer versions were released with MS Office packages, they probably have extra code for Office applications. Win2003 SP1 [which installs riched20.dll 5.31] was released March 30 2005. MS Office 2003 was released [probably] a few months before that. Hope this helps.
  17. All current Netscape, Mozilla [a.k.a. Seamonkey] + Firefox 32-bit browsers for Win32: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#NET + Opera + MS IE, inclusing IE 7.0 Beta 2. ... Or if any1 wants 16-bit browsers for Windows/WfWG 3.1x [Win16]: http://www.mdgx.com/w31toy.htm#3IE Hope this helps.
  18. Try the links of the bottom of this topic: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip16.htm#FDP But remember, DVDPLAY.EXE is a very primitive DVD player, and some functions that are supported by more advanced DVD players [like PowerDVD or WinDVD for example] are absent. Hope this helps.

  21. HI MDGx, Thanks for posting these. Sorry to report that I am still unable to install both of these patches. Here's the error message: Error leading advpack.dll. Any ideas? Thanks for your feedback. As you may have noticed, the_guy is the author of these patches. Please address the_guy all questions/issues regarding these patches. I will post updated patches when available. Hope this helps.
  22. Yes, I know, but if using the XP files the settings are not kept [like chat, sound, etc], you need to reset them [including the starting nag boxes] every time you run those game executables. All settings remain the same way they were set last if using WinME files. BTW: I haven't noticed any faster performance when using the XP files. I found that after the second time of settin them you don't have to set them anymore.Just in case you change your mind. Have you ever consider replacing Character Map with Extended Character Map. I got it from your site.I aware of its existence others may not be. 989SE2ME's sole purpose is to replace 98 SE files with ME files. Please see READ1ST.TXT [the FAQ section] for more details:READ1ST.TXT That's why 98SE2ME does not replace Windows files with XP or 3rd party tools. Extended character map is a 3rd party tool, which abides by the author's copyright license [whichever that is]. 98SE2ME uses very carefully a few free(ware) tools, and only to help with install issues. The only exception is Notepad, replaced by PFE32. That's because I consider MS Notepad useless as a text editor/viewer tool, and must be replaced by something better that can open files larger than 64 KB. If I [ever] find the time to write + post unattended scripts to replace XP files [something like 98SE2XP], then I will add the GameZone files to it. Hope this helps. ______________________________________ I believe your questions are answered in READ1ST.TXT: READ1ST.TXT Hope this helps. ______________________________________ Is there a chance that that was an April 1st fools prank? Please see AIM Ad Hack web site [as of 4-3-2006]: http://aftermath.dyndns.org:8888/~aimadhack/ or: http://aimadhack.webhop.net/ Hope this helps. Please post all non-related 98SE2ME issues here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=8 Thanks.
  23. Please do.Thanks. I'll post them as as soon as I can. PS: I just posted your updated MP912452.EXE + IE905495.EXE fixes. * Microsoft Windows 2000/XP Media Player 9.0 (WMP9)/10.0 (WMP10) WMP.DLL 10.0.0.3993/9.0.0.3346 Fix (English): http://support.microsoft.com/?id=912452 - Unofficial WMP9 Patch for Windows 98 SE/ME [1.85 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/MP912452.EXE * Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2/6.0 SP1 for Windows 98/NT4/ME/2000 FTP Client MSIEFTP.DLL Security Vulnerability Fix (English): http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms05-044.mspx - Unofficial MS IE 6.0 SP1 Patch for Windows 98/NT4/ME [222 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/IE905495.EXE

  25. I bought my official XP Pro OEM copy from Mwave.com: http://www.mwave.com/ which says it is an authorized Microsoft dealer. Microsoft posted a list of authorized dealers/vendors here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003...ysbuilders.mspx and guess what? Mwave.com is included. Hope this helps.
