Unofficial update - new version - crashed system!
MDGx replied to emarkay's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
erpdude8: Prime95: http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm -
At least convince her to install all available updates for Win95/95a OSR1 and/or Win95B/95C OSR2.x [if appropriate]: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#OSR2 http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#WIN [thanks miko ] and then install IE 5.5 SP2, DirectX 9.0c and few other system updates: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm especially the IE security updates. You may also want to check if the video drivers [and eventually the sound, network, modem, printer etc drivers] are up to date. Hope this helps.

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Ok, I give up. I have added all 5 "MSN Gaming Zone" WinME internet games. Run 98SE2ME option 1 or 2. Then run 1 of these shortcuts to play: Start button -> Programs -> Accessories -> GameZone -> run Backgammon, Checkers, Hearts, Reversi or Spades. Enjoy. PS: Windows XP + 2003 CDs include newer versions of these internet games. ________________________________________________ I have tried tuneup.exe from WinME, and when I allowed it do its thing, it ran cleanmgr.exe, which erased most of my C drive, and if I wouldn't have stopped it, it would have also erased most of my D drive. I restored all my files/folders from backups, but that's not the point. If it did that on my computer, it can do even worse on others' computers, so I don't consider it safe enough to add it to 98SE2ME. -
Unofficial update - new version - crashed system!
MDGx replied to emarkay's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Backup= does not exist as MSDOS.SYS setting. You can add/modify it/whatever, but it won't do anything. SystemReg= only *scans* for certain errors the registry files upon every Windows startup, does not tell Windows to not load the registry. Therefore it is perfectly safe to use. I use SystemReg= in my MSDOS.SYS [and WINBOOT.INI] for over 8 years, without any problems, with Win95, 98 and ME [all editions]. Hope this helps. -

Please note that this URL:http://www2.acc.chula.ac.th/~montree/msdos.html is only an older copy of my MSDOS.SYS Guide: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm which used to be located here [my old web site on AOL has been disabled for over 3 years]: http://members.aol.com/axcel216/msdos.htm This page on AOL only redirects to my current one: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm Hope this helps. -
98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Thanks for your tip.The idea crossed my mind, but haven't tried the MS internet games from WinME yet. I'll try them out and if they work, I'll add them to 98SE2ME. -
Sites with DLL/OCX/EXE/etc files: - DLL files: http://www.dll-files.com/ - DllDump: http://www.dlldump.com/ - InfDump: http://www.infdump.com/ - OcxDump: http://www.ocxdump.com/ If you get a hold of a Win98 SE setup CD... IPHLPAPI.DLL is found on the Win98 SE setup CD inside NET7.CAB . Extract it by running [generic example, you need to replace X and WIN98 to match your particular settings]: EXTRACT X:\WIN98\NET7.CAB IPHLPAPI.DLL Or if you have WinRAR, WinZIP or PowerArchiver [current versions], you can extract these files from CABs by using 1 of these tools: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP Then copy IPHLPAPI.DLL to %windir%\SYSTEM [usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM] if missing. You may need to reboot to native MS-DOS to copy IPHLPAPI.DLL to %windir%\SYSTEM . Reboot normal when done. SERVICES is just a text file necessary on networks + internet, and is found inside NET7.CAB . SERVICES should be located in %windir% [usually C:\WINDOWS]. VIP.386 is also found inside NET7.CAB and should be located in %windir%\SYSTEM . If using Win98 SE, you may want to install this VIP.386 fix: Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE HP Omnibook Portable Computer Docking Error VIP.386 (build 4.10.2003 for Win98/98 SP1 + build 4.10.2227 for Win98 SE) Fix: http://www.martini-man.com/pub/HPOmnibook/...9388/README.TXT Direct download [189 KB, English]: http://www.martini-man.com/pub/HPOmnibook/.../269388USA8.EXE Hope this helps.

Why do you use quotation marks on your OEMSETUP command line? Try to remove them. Also, you may want to specify the complete path to your INF file, example: OEMSETUP /S C:\WMESET\WIN98SE.INF /K /IE /NF I use these setup switches to install 98 SE + ME [but I don't have an OEM WinME CD]: SETUP.EXE /ID /IE /IM /IQ /IS /IV /IW /NM /T:D:\TEMP D:\WINME\MSBATCH.INF Setup switches explained: http://www.mdgx.com/last2.htm#SETUPSW Also, in oder to skip the PID [ProductKey], your INF automation/unattended file must contain these lines [change to match your specific settings]: [Setup] Express=1 InstallDir=C:\WME InstallType=3 ProductType=1 ProductKey="XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX" EBD=0 ShowEula=0 ChangeDir=1 OptionalComponents=1 Network=1 System=0 CCP=0 CleanBoot=0 Display=0 DevicePath=0 NoDirWarn=1 TimeZone="Mountain Time" Uninstall=0 NoPrompt2Boot=1 Reboot=2 Verify=0 PenWinWarning=0 VRC=0 Chkdsk=0 Hope this helps.

I also thought tcpip.sys would be just a wrapper, but after looking at its file size and code, I believe that it is unlikely. [?] I haven't found *ntkern under "DevLoader" in the WinME registry for any tcpip.sys entries. This is the WinME registry key I was trying to "emulate" in Win98 SE [please note that all NetTrans keys use DevLoader=*ndis , which loads ndis.vxd]: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\0001] "DriverDesc"="TCP/IP" "InfSection"="MSTCP.ndi" "DeviceVxDs"="tcpip.sys,vtdi.386,vip.386,vtcp.386,vdhcp.386,vnbt.386" "InstallVnbt"="0" "InfPath"="NETTRANS.INF" "ProviderName"="Microsoft" "DevLoader"="*ndis" "Preemptable"=hex:00,00,00,00 "NTEContextList"="0x00000002" "SignedBy"="Microsoft Consumer Windows Publisher" I also noticed that the only place tcpip.sys is mentioned in the WinME registry, is under the NetTrans keys.

Extract shlwapi.dll from Win98 SE setup CD CABs [presuming you are using Win98 SE OS]: EXTRACT/Y /L X:\WIN9X\WIN98_41.CAB C:\EXTRACT SHLWAPI.DLL Replace X with your actual CD/DVD drive letter [1st one if u have more than 1]. Then boot to native MS-DOS: 1. by holding down Shift + F5 at the same time during BIOS boot POST (Power On Self Test) sequence. 2. OR by scrolling down using the down arrow to the "Command prompt only" option and then pressing Enter from the Windows 98 Startup Menu: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm#MEN 3. OR from a Windows 98 SE Emergency/Bootup/Startup floppy/CD/DVD/USB/external disc/stick. Then copy shlwapi.dll to %winbootdir%\system: IF EXIST %winbootdir%\SYSTEM\SHLWAPI.DLL ATTRIB -H -R -S %winbootdir%\SYSTEM\SHLWAPI.DLL COPY/Y C:\EXTRACT\SHLWAPI.DLL %winbootdir%\SYSTEM Finally, type WIN and hit Enter to load Windows GUI or reboot. FYI: Newest build of SHLWAPI.DLL installs as part of MS IE 5/6 cumulative security fix: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IEC Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip. I'm aware of Win9x/ME internet tweaks, I actually have quite a few posted at my site: http://www.mdgx.com/modem.htm Please see also bugs + browsers: http://www.mdgx.com/brow.htm The issue Tihiy and I were discussing was about trying to implement [at least some of] WinME TCPIP.SYS functionality into 98SE2ME, respectively into Win98 SE OS. And I mean that without hexing tcpip.sys or any other files, just by installing tcpip.sys and related files from WinME setup CD, adding necessary registry entries, and [eventually] using relevant NETTRANS.INF settings from WinME. But so far [haven't tried too hard though] I haven't been successful. Hope this helps.

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Most of these questions [and many others] are already answered in detail in READ1ST.TXT:READ1ST.TXT under the FAQ section. If you meant by "fussion all these artwork into one big transplant" that Gape's SP2, 98SE2ME, NUSB and eventually Tihiy's RP should merge in 1 happy package, that's not possible, because of the completely different purposes of each of these packages, and even if this could be done, there will be lots of conflicting files and tweaks/settings/etc, that would render your OS totally unusable. But there are [still available, I believe] 2 huge packages that bundle all of the above [you can install separately or setup your OS to install unattended and then install them sequentially from dedicated scripts], and much more [but these are not supported by Gape, Tihiy, myself or any other separate package developers, for obvious reasons = see above]: the_guy: Windows 98/98 SE/ME Option Pack (OP) Full [100 MB] + Lite [33.5 MB]: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=52318 jimmsta: Windows 98 PowerPack [344 MB ISO]: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=57352 Hope this helps. ________________________________________________ Great idea.I never tried WinME tuneup.exe under 98 SE. I will, and will post my findings here. Thanks for the tip. -
I have tried briefly %windir%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\TCPIP.SYS, but didn't notice any improvement, and not sure if I did it right. The only registry entries I found are under the NetTrans key [example]: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\0000] "DriverDesc"="TCP/IP" "InfSection"="MSTCP.ndi" "DeviceVxDs"="tcpip.sys,vtdi.386,vip.386,vtcp.386,vdhcp.386,vnbt.386" "InstallVnbt"="0" "InfPath"="NETTRANS.INF" "ProviderName"="Microsoft" "DevLoader"="*ndis" "NodeType"="1" "NTEContextList"="0x00000003" "DriverDate"="06/08/2000" "SignedBy"="Microsoft Consumer Windows Publisher" I probably need to use also NETTRANS.INF from WinME, or at least add tcpip.sys entries to Win98 SE NETTRANS.INF. I'll do this again 1 day, when I find more time.

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Unfortunately I can't reproduce your hardware/software settings to see where the problem is.If you have time, please compare the files installed by 98SE2ME option 2 into %windir%\SYSTEM with the ones you had from before. That is if you selected to create the backup into C:\W98SEOLD . Then you could restore old files back to original locations 1 at a time [or small groups of related files], using only the ones you suspect caused the slowdown, of course. If you come up with something, please post your findings here. Many thanks for your time + concern. About MSGSVR32 crashes, I googled some articles which may be of use: http://www.google.com/search?q=msgsvr32+crash Here are a few: http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ermsgs32.htm http://support.microsoft.com/?id=262998 http://forums.thatcomputerguy.us/?showtopi...indpost&p=80197 http://www.glencove.com/95nworkhware.html#g10 http://forums.techguy.org/windows-95-98-me...-shut-down.html http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/archiv...php/t-1527.html http://www.pcguide.com/vb/printthread.php?t=1949 http://www.uni-giessen.de/faq/archiv/ms-wi...7/msg00007.html http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/foru...d.asp?thre=8582 Hope this helps. PS: How did you install 640 MB of RAM, do you have 3 [or more] RAM banks that support RAM sticks of different amounts? Maybe [just a thought] your crashes and/or slowdowns are caused by RAM sticks with different specs [CAS, RAS, frequency etc]. It is usually advised to install all RAM sticks of the same kind, and if possible [optional] of same RAM amount. This depends mostly on what kind of mobo you have. -
To be honest, I never tried to reinstall 98 SE after I installed 98SE2ME or Gape's SP2. If I ever do, I'll post here my findings.
-
In order to install 98SE2ME options 1, 2 and/or 3, you need all these WinME CABs placed in the same directory [anywhere on any of your local hard drives/partitions], or pop in any English WinME setup CD into your 1st (if more than 1) CD/DVD drive: BASE2.CAB CATALOG.CAB DRIVER5.CAB DRIVER6.CAB DRIVER7.CAB MINI.CAB NET3.CAB NET4.CAB PRECOPY1.CAB WIN_10.CAB WIN_11.CAB WIN_12.CAB WIN_13.CAB WIN_14.CAB WIN_15.CAB WIN_16.CAB WIN_17.CAB WIN_18.CAB WIN_19.CAB WIN_20.CAB WIN_21.CAB WIN_22.CAB WIN_8.CAB WIN_9.CAB Any WinME setup CD works, including OEMs. Any other CABs you may have are not necessary. OEM/VAR manufacturers must preserve the MS CAB structure from WinME setup CD-ROM, and if they wish, they can add their own CABs and/or files, for custom installs, but per the MS license they can't modify/repack the MS CABs. More info in READ1ST.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT From now on please post any 98SE2ME related questions/comments/etc into this forum: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349 Hope this helps.

the_guy: I have discovered a way to install unofficial [packed with Iexpress using SED + INF scripts] WinME patches/fixes/updates directly, without the need for manually disabling System Restore [from Control Panel], or using CoolKill [or similar tool] to kill Stmgr.exe, or using MSCONFIG to disable Statemgr.exe etc... etc... All you need is run NIRCMD [freeware]: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html to kill the running SR [system Restore] + WFP [Windows File Protection] processes/TSRs/services. You also need to delete %windir%\WININIT.LOG before attempting to copy any system files to %windir%\SYSTEM or to %windir% . Optional: You can also delete the backed up system files from C:\_RESTORE\TEMP [example used in ME912919.EXE patch which installs GDI32.DLL + GDI.EXE = see links further below]: C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\GDI.0 C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\GDI32.0 This is my ME912919.INF example with necessary nircmd lines [must have START.EXE (from WinME setup CD) + NIRCMD.EXE ( http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html ) in the same directory where the *.INF files reside]: ; ME912919.INF = Unofficial Windows ME GDI32.DLL + GDI.EXE 4.90.3002 Q912919 Security Vulnerability Fix [Version] Signature=$CHICAGO$ AdvancedINF=2.0 [DefaultInstall] DelFiles=LOG,GD0 CopyFiles=GDI,INF AddReg=RX UpdateInis=WX RunPreSetupCommands=WL1 RunPostSetupCommands=WL2 [INF] @DELWL.INF [GD0] GDI.0 GDI32.0 [LOG] WININIT.LOG [GDI] GDI32.DLL GDI.EXE [RX] HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RenameFiles\WININIT.LOG,,,%10% HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RenameFiles\WININIT.LOG,WININIT.LOG,,"WININIT.LOG,0" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\000","DWL",,"RUNDLL32 %11%\ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection %17%\@DELWL.INF,DefaultInstall" [WX] %10%\WININIT.INI,Rename,,"NUL=%10%\WININIT.LOG" [WL1] "START /W NIRCMD killprocess STMGR.EXE" "START /W NIRCMD killprocess STATEMGR.EXE" "START /W NIRCMD killprocess RSTRLFN.EXE" "START /W NIRCMD killprocess RSTRUI.EXE" "START /W NIRCMD killprocess VXDMON.VXD" [WL2] "START /W NIRCMD killprocess STMGR.EXE" "START /W NIRCMD killprocess STATEMGR.EXE" "START /W NIRCMD killprocess RSTRLFN.EXE" "START /W NIRCMD killprocess RSTRUI.EXE" "START /W NIRCMD killprocess VXDMON.VXD" [DestinationDirs] INF=17 LOG=10 GDI=11 GD0=31,_RESTORE\TEMP WX=10 [SourceDisksNames] 1=,,0 ME912919.INF also uses @DELWL.INF to delete WININIT.LOG after next reboot: [Version] Signature=$CHICAGO$ AdvancedINF=2.0 [DefaultInstall] AddReg=AR DelFiles=LOG,GD0 [WX] %10%\WININIT.INI,Rename,,"NUL=%10%\WININIT.LOG" [AR] HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RenameFiles\WININIT.LOG,,,%10% HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RenameFiles\WININIT.LOG,WININIT.LOG,,"WININIT.LOG,0" HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","DX0",,"RUNDLL32 %11%\ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection %17%\@DELWL.INF,DX" [LOG] WININIT.LOG [DX] DelFiles=LOG,INF [INF] @DELWL.INF [GD0] GDI.0 GDI32.0 [DestinationDirs] LOG=10 INF=17 WX=10 GD0=31,_RESTORE\TEMP [SourceDisksNames] 1=,,0 I use both INFs above to install this patch: * Unofficial Windows ME Graphics Rendering Engine GDI32.DLL + GDI.EXE build 4.90.3002 Security Vulnerability Fix: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms06-001.mspx Direct download [392 KB, English]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/ME912919.EXE More info: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581&st=193 This way I have successfully installed the ME912919.EXE patch on a WinME computer with SR/WFP running [stmgr, statemgr, rstrui, rstrlfn + vxdmon.vxd]. Have you asked ATI support why this happens? They also have a decent KB: https://support.ati.com/ Maybe their drivers need those extra 2 MB of memory for some specific [?] video controller functions... This can [probably] be tested also under Windows ME, 2000, XP or 2003. Hope this helps.
