  1. Resource Meter is already installed by 98SE2ME options 1 + 2.Please see the complete list of files installed by 98SE2ME: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#FME The complete list also in TIPS98.TXT, part of W95-11D.EXE: http://www.mdgx.com/95.htm This info is also linked from READ1ST.TXT: READ1ST.TXT in the "FAQ" section, I believe. These are the rsrcmtr files: %windir%\RSRCMTR.EXE %windir%\SYSTEM\RSRC16.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM\RSRC32.DLL CDPLAYER.EXE from WinME is just a "stub", only starts WMPLAYER.EXE (WMP). But the same file name from Win98 SE is the actual CD player application. That's why I didn't replace it. FYI [if that's the 1 you were referring to]: Deluxe CD Player [DELUXECD.EXE] is included only with MS Plus! 98 and Win2000 setup CD. The 1 from Plus! 98 works with NTx OSes but the 1 from Win2000 doesn't work with 9x OSes. I'll see what I can do about the explorer banner. I'll post here a new edition of 98SE2ME when ready. HTH
  2. Try this:modify C:\MSDOS.SYS [attrib -r -s -h it 1st] using EDIT.COM from native MS-DOS: attrib -h -r -s c:\msdos.sys edit c:\msdos.sys and add/change the line to read: SystemReg=0 under the [Options] section. Reboot. MSDOS.SYS guide: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm HTH
  3. the_guy: I also posted the new NT4 hotfix: * Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0/6.0 SP1 Dynamic HTML Errors MSHTMLED.DLL 6.0.2800.1501/6.0.2800.1502 Fix (English): http://support.microsoft.com/?id=896156 Unofficial MS IE Patch for Windows NT4 SP6a [279 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/NT896156.EXE
  4. Thanks a lot Petr. The bugs/issues with 3rd party/custom ActiveX controls [but not necessarily in my case, the only bug I noticed so far involves a MS's own ActiveX control = the 1 that allows WU/WUC/OU to work] are described here: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=909738 and here: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=912812 I posted here what I've done so far [scroll down to "BUGS:" and URLMON.DLL]: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IEC Indeed this is the bug I've been experiencing since I 1st installed URLMON.DLL from Q912812. And there is another person who noticed this same bug with Office Update (OU). Nothing I've done so far fixed it. I had to revert to older Q905915. But I'll try the diagnostic tool you linked to, hopefully that will help. Thanks.
  5. also MDGx, see this page on optimizing DSL/Cable connections:http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/ More like this:http://www.mdgx.com/modem.htm#DS HTH
  6. Unfortunately this REG hack did not fix the URLMON.DLL bug from MS06-013 not being able to access WU/WUC/OU web sites. So I'm still using older URLMON.DLL from MS05-054. This happens while using Win98 SE. Did not try any other OS yet. Full details here [scroll down to BUGS:]: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IEC Anybody else experienced similar problem? Please post here your findings/fixes/etc. HTH
  7. Yet more misinformation... I clearly remembering using DOS 4.01 with a 300Mb hard disk... the actual maximum limit is 2Gb. Isn't it 128Gb?If I recall correctly DOS 4.0 indeed came with FAT12, which used to support [officially] HD partitions up to 16 MB and unofficially supported HD partitions up to ~ 32 MB [?].But not long after that, MS-DOS 4.01 came out with FAT16 [even if it still was advertised as FAT12], which used FDISK with support for FAT16 [not advertised as such]. That version of FDISK supported HD partitions up to ~ 128 MB. But FORMAT.COM from MS-DOS 3.3/4.0x only supported up to 16 MB partitions. Please see this for details: http://www.mdgx.com/secrets.htm#FAT32 FYI: FAT32 [the newer FAT32X edition (1997) implemented in Windows 95C OSR 2.5] partitions can go up to 2 TB [Terabytes] if proper BIOS [or BIOS wrapper] support is provided [48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing)]. More stuff here, but not complete: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS-DOS HTH
  8. Win98/ME logos [1 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/95LOGOS.ZIP Guide: http://www.mdgx.com/files/95LOGOS.TXT Enjoy.
  9. Impressive + very nice job. Q: Did you install DirectX 9.0c or another older version?
  10. If I may make a couple of suggestions: - lastdrive=Z statement is not really needed, Win95/98/ME automatically sets it to Z if not specified otherwise. - oakcdrom.sys driver is primitive, antiquated and does not work properly with some CD/DVD drives out there. Please see: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#CDR scroll down to QCDROM.SYS, XCDROM.SYS, VIDE-CDD.SYS, ATAPICDD.SYS + TEAC_CDI.SYS. Or this guide: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip1.htm#CDROM4 for free universal CD/DVD drivers for native MS-DOS. These take less RAM, and can be loaded in upper memory if UMA memory manager [EMM386, UMBPCI, QEMM386, RM386, 386MAX etc] loaded already from config.sys. And you can also use a MSCDEX.EXE replacement: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#CDR scroll down to SHSUCDX [sHCDX33A.COM], NWCDEX + MSCDEX [Cloaked]. If you own a USB CD/DVD drive, you can use USB_CD.SYS: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#CDR - I strongly suggest to replace primitive ramdrive.sys with Xmsdsk/Emsdsk or SRDisk [scroll further down]: http://www.mdgx.com/dos.htm#OSR HTH
  11. Sorry guys, 98SE2ME is about upgrading Win98 SE to WinME level, not downgrading to Win95B/95C OSR2.x level. ;(And besides, in order to add Win95B/95C explorer.exe to 98SE2ME, you will need a Win95B/95C OSR2.x setup CD or CABs [which you have to provide at the time of installation], a.k.a. a legitimate license to own such a CD or CABs. And as you might have guessed, this unfortunately is beyond the scope of 98SE2ME. But if you wish to do this at home, Marius '95 has graceously provided the guide [excerpt from READ1ST.TXT, the "KNOWN BUGS + FIXES" section]: READ1ST.TXT HTH
  12. MPC has been updated to ver 6.4.9.0: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#MED to incorporate latest WMP + DX functions. HTH

    sndvol32.exe

I don't use systray.exe to load sndvol32.exe or anything else for that matter. I use TrayIcon [3rd party freeware tool]: http://www.infobro.com/anon-FTP/Old_Files/trayicon.zip which can create direct shortcuts to anything on your hard drives. So I made a shortcut to sndvol32.exe. That's why I replaced the ugly sndvol32 icons with the XP ones. HTH
  14. Details on installing + using Win95 Fax tools under 98/98 SE/ME: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#F95T Please note the no-no warning if using MS Office 2000 or newer, which installs Outlook 2000 or newer. HTH
  15. Color controls depend upon installed video drivers, DirectX version, video settings etc. WMP is actually looking for those functions [APIs] in the video drivers. And unfortunately all video controllers and drivers are different. Try also MPC [free GPL]: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#MED http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/ HTH
  16. Config.sys menus appear only after msdos.sys is processed, which means will not be able to list items like Normal, Safe boot, Bootlog.txt etc..., unless a 3rd party boot manager tool is used. Win9x MSDOS.SYS: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm Config.sys menus: go to: http://www.mdgx.com/95.htm download + install W95-11D.EXE. Then look under C:\Program Files\AXCEL216\Sysfiles -> open config.sys [MS-DOS 7/8] and/or config.dos [MS-DOS 6.xx] in Notepad. Or go see: http://dos.rsvs.net/DOSPAGE/CONFMENU.HTM http://www.knowplace.org/pages/morgue/dos_...oting_howto.php But IO.SYS and/or COMMAND.COM can be hexed to replace all "autoexec.bat" strings with the BAT file name of your choice. HTH
  17. That's the %windir%\explorer.exe BMP [Windows BitMaP].In 98SE2ME I'm using a custom modded explorer.exe which shows the "Windows 98 Second Edition" banner, "borrowed" from Gape's SP2, and patched as described here: http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color/ Al this info is also detailed in READ1ST.TXT: READ1ST.TXT under the "98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE" section, please see "* Option 6:". I could patch explorer.exe to show "Windows 98 SE Killer Replacements" or something similar, but I need at least a few people to vote for this, and so far you're the only one. Edit: Now there are 2 of you who want this, so I'll give it another thought. And besides, 98SE2ME option 3 installs another explorer.exe, the newer one from WinME CD, which displays the "Windows Millennium Edition" banner. If you like to see a 98SE2ME or Killer Replacements or similar banner, you can mod explorer.exe in Resource Hacker [freeware]: http://www.users.on.net/johnson/resourcehacker/ and replace BMP #157 [under 1033 for English editions] with your own, you can even put your name in it if you wish. To create a 16 colors BMP is easy, just open MSPAINT.EXE. Export the original one from within explorer.exe, open it up in Mspaint, look at its witdth x height, and then create your own with same dimensions. Make sure the file size is aproximately the same as the original BMP. If it's not, reduce the number of colors to 16. Better, you can also use any of these graphics editors [most are free(ware)] for this purpose: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#GRA HTH
  18. 98SE2ME versus WinME pros + cons [please see the "FAQ" section]:http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT HTH ___________________________________________ About 98SE2ME being up to date:I always make sure to include all newest WinME updates, but only if they are compatible with Win98 SE, which means I test them 1st. More details on this issue [please see the "FAQ" section]: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT HTH ___________________________________________ Sorry if I didn't get to answer your question(s), I probably missed those posts, but not intentionally.I try to read all these threads whenever I can, but I'm sure I missed a few, because: - my spare time is quite limited - way too many posts to keep track of. Therefore, when for 1 reason or another I don't answer a question/request in about a week of so, please PM or e-mail me [click the blue E-mail link]: http://www.mdgx.com/form.htm Thanks. HTH
  19. Please specify which start banner, eventually post a GIF screenshot. Are you referring to the Inno Setup BMP [C:\9!M\98LG.BMP] when you 1st run the 98SE2ME.EXE installer? 98LG.BMP can be seen here: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/#1 If this is the screen you are referring to, do you have ideas what to replace it with? Thanks.
  20. Gape: Many thanks [from everybody here] for making this thread a "sticky". Best wishes. ______________________________________________ erpdude8: Congratulations for your new DSL "gate" to the cyber-world. Edit: Make sure you place frequency reducers [converters] on all phone lines you use for voice or fax. Make sure you do NOT place ANY frequency reducers [converters] on ANY phone lines you use for DSL connections. These devices should be provided by DSL phone line provider for free, or if you need more than they provide, you can find them for cheap at the local RadioShack. If you plan on using a single DSL modem with more than 1 computer, make sure you hook up the DSL modem through a high-speed 2-4 port [or more depending on how many computers you plan on connecting to DSL] Ethernet DSL/Cable/Broadband router [wired or wireless] which should include a built-in hardware firewall. Most such routers should be relatively cheaply priced nowadays. I use a wired Linksys (Cisco) BEFSX41 Instant Broadband EtherFast Cable/DSL with 4 Port Switch/VPN Endpoint: http://www.mdgx.com/pc.htm#FWR which was ~ $60 bucks at CompUSA when I purchased it ~ 2.5 years ago. sndvol32.exe

You need to replace all 5 icon groups in sndvol32.exe with the ones you want. Example: I "borrowed" the icon groups from WinXP sndvol32.exe and put them into WinME sndvol32.exe, which I'm using in Win98 SE. I use Resource Hacker [freeware]: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ BTW: 98SE2ME: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349 also replaces 98SE sndvol32.exe with the 1 from WinME setup CD. Hope this helps.
  23. As far as I can tell 98SEMP10 doesn't affect the playback of any media formats, including VCD, SVCD, DVD. If you somehow lost the ability to play VCDs and/or DVDs, you need to reinstall the decoder/software/player/etc you already have installed in the past, or look for newer or better one(s). Also, you need to have DirectX 9.0c already installed: http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#DX9 And don't forget to update your video controller drivers to current version. To my knowledge in order to play VCDs/SVCDs in Windows 98/98 SE/ME you need to install a dedicated decoder and eventually a 3rd party player, like Zoom Player [standard is free]: http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml or Media Player Classic (MPC) [free GPL]: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/ WMP9 or other versions [except WMP 9/10 in WinXP/2003] cannot play DVDs or VCDs in Win98/ME without installing a dedicated decoder. I don't have experience with VCDs/SVCDs, never used any. And I gave up a long time ago trying to play DVDs using the primitive DVDPLAY.EXE [Win98/98 SE built-in DVD player]: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip16.htm#FDP More info about VCD playback: http://www.filmcentre.co.uk/dvd_2.html http://www.pcphotovideo.com/svcd.htm http://www.homedvdcopy.com/easydvdrip/help/faq.htm SVCD codec: http://www.divxmovies.com/software/ http://download.divxmovies.com/mpeg2codec_installer.zip Codecs: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=77391 http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_in_1.htm http://www.inmatrix.com/zplayer/formats/mpeg2.shtml VCD/SVCD -> DVD/MPEG conversion tools/encoders: http://www.mpegx.com/list.php?type=download Hope this helps.
  24. If you install 98SEMP10 [which installs WMP10 XP on 98 SE/ME]: http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/98SEMP10.EXE you have the choice to select 1 of the WMP10 skins available in WinXP with WMP10 installed. Skins [installed in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Skins]: 9SERIESD.WMZ COMPACT.WMZ QUICKSI.WMZ REVERT.WMZ 98SEMP10 forum: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=53286 More WMP 9/10 skins from MS [free]: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...ation/skins.asp http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...more/skins.aspx http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...ayer/bonuspack/ http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa..._winterfun.mspx Hope this helps.
  25. To my knowledge you must use Internet Eplorer 5, 6 or newer with ActiveX enabled in order to access WU and download updates. Although, there is a Firefox/Netscape/Mozilla/Opera extension that may [or may not] allow some of these functions, if you wish to use such browsers to do this: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ I don't think any OS other than 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP or 2003 [and a few others listed at WU catalog] can be used to download updates this way. Linux, BeOS, BBS, UNIX, MacOS X, OS/2, DOS and related are cetainly not allowed to use WU, because of MS detection, but I haven't tested under other OS with Firefox extension above installed: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ FYI: There must be something you can do to allow WU to work in MS IE under WinXP. Most likely culprits: - please inspect Internet Options from MS IE and modify settings, then restart Windows or log off + log back in to experiment. - make sure you have full administrative rights. - make sure your firewall/protection/antivirus/antispy software do not interfere with WU. Hope this helps.
