  1. All files that have up to 8.3 characters in their name/extension are by default stored on disk in "all caps" [upper case], a.k.a. SFNs [short File Names]. All files with more than 8 [name] or 3 [extension] characters are stored in all Win32/Win64 [9x/NTx], *nix [uNIX/Linux/BSD/FreeBSD], OS/2, BeOS + MacOS OSes by default as LFNs [Long File Names] which can go up to 255 chars. Please note that you can rename a SFN [8.3] file to small [lower] case, but it will become LFN, which means it will take more disk space, because every LFN file has 2 FAT entries [place holders]. SFN files have only 1 FAT entry. Hope this helps.
  2. There are few 2000/XP/2003 files that can be used under 9x/ME. Please see these projects for examples: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#98MP10 http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#L3C Some 9x system updates which include 2000/XP/2003 files are here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm Examples: TTF Pack MSPAINT Graphic Filters Hope this helps.
  3. I have sent a notification to the patch author regarding this matter.I'll post updated patch(es) as soon as I'll get them. The install order should not matter because newer file always overwrites older one [these are all standard MS patches built with iexpress]. If newer file already installed, will not be overwritten by older one, unless you specifically allow it. Hope this helps.
  4. Thanks for your feedback.Corrected error in O3BKP.BAT. Option 3 now backs up all files correctly. Please download current 98SE2ME edition [2.6 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 and then install option 3 again. Please make sure files replaced by option 3 are the original ones from Win98 SE before running 98SE2ME. Files replaced/added by option 3: %windir%\EXPLORER.EXE %windir%\SYSTEM\COMDLG32.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM\DOCPROP.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM\FONTEXT.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM\SHSCRAP.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM\IESHWIZ.EXE %windir%\SYSTEM\MYDOCS.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM\PLUSTAB.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM\SHELL32.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM\WEBVW.DLL Please note that DIMM.DLL + DOCPROP2.DLL are not found in Win98 SE setup CD CABs. DIMM.DLL + DOCPROP2.DLL are installed into %windir%\SYSTEM by option 3 from WinME CABs.
  5. Good question.I've scratched my head 1 too many times trying to figure out how to do this, but no luck. Anybody who knows how to type a null character in the EDIT.COM search box, please post here. Much appreciated. ________________________________ Sorry, only for Windows XP.Does not support 9x OSes.
  6. Here are all NFR versions: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#NFR
  7. DCOM98 RPCRT4.DLL build 4.71.3336 Fix for Windows 98/ME: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=269874 - RPCRT4.DLL Patch for Windows ME [296 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/ME269874.EXE - RPCRT4.DLL Patch for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE [1.39 MB]: http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../269874usa8.exe These patches posted here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#COM Hope this helps.
  8. Thanks for the suggestion.Since then, I've updated the batch code, and also forced all command.com internal commands to "comply" with 4DOS/NDOS [presuming NDOS is similar to 4DOS] or replaced internal commands with external ones. Please download a fresh copy of 98SE2ME.EXE [2.6 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 and install it without replacing NDOS/4DOS with command.com. It should work ok. Please let me know if it doesn't. Hope this helps.
  9. Glad it worked this time. Enjoy.
  10. I have tested kernel32.dll with NTx enhancements. Got an error when trying to install .Net Framework Redistributable (NFR), any version: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#NFR I had to restore original kernel32.dll file in order to install NFR. ;( Hope this helps.
  11. I have bought my XP OEM CD bundled with a $1 power cable. This respects MS EULAs and trade/license agreements. Therefore, it is legal [at least in the USA] to bundle MS Windows OEM CDs with extremely cheap computer hardware, even electrical supplies, like a power cord in this case.
  12. You may also wish to try this: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip16.htm#RSB Hope this helps.

  14. It's not a question of improving it, it's the way it is implemented, file dependencies, etc, which canNOT be changed, unless some1 reprograms/hexes the UI + Shell files. And if some1 mods the files, it must be distributed as a separate package [if any], I will not add them to 98SE2ME, because 98SE2ME contains only official files from MS which can be installed by any1 with 98 SE OS + WinME CD. An alternative is to install Tihiy's Revolution packs. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=58357 Hope this helps.
  15. 1. Short answer: Yes.Long answer: see READ1ST.TXT under "98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE" section: READ1ST.TXT 2. I do not use option 3. As you may have noticed, there are drawbacks and the UI is slower. I like better the 98 SE UI. But there are people who prefer the ME UI. 3. Yes, because Maximus-Decim's NUSB contains also added/modified INFs, but 98SE2ME does not [option 8 only installs *.SYS + HID UI files], so you may want to install NUSB, especially if your USB device(s) don't function properly. Hope this helps. _________________________________ Interesting.Because I can't test such network environment, I have no idea if/why/which file(s) is/are responsible. The only solution I see is to take time [if you wish] and try to replace network files one at a time, to determine which is/are the slow one(s). About the password request change: Can't test that either, unfortunately. Is that a good thing [less typing], XP not asking for your 98SE password every time you access a new folder, or is that a security problem in this case? Thanks a lot for your feedback.
  16. Thanks for your feedback.I've never used command.com replacements, so I can't test NDOS or 4DOS command interpreters. But I have added [98SE2ME 3-19-2006 edition] detection code into all 98SE2ME batch files for COMSPEC and COMMAND.COM, and if none are found, then the environment will be set to the current location of command.com, accounting for all 3 possible locations: C:\ root, %windir% + %windir%\command : SET | C:\9!M\FIND /I "COMMAND.COM">NUL IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO 4D1 IF ERRORLEVEL 0 GOTO 4D0 :4D1 SET | C:\9!M\FIND /I "COMSPEC=">NUL IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO 4D2 IF ERRORLEVEL 0 GOTO 4D0 :4D2 IF NOT EXIST %winbootdir%\COMMAND\COMMAND.COM GOTO XC1 SET COMSPEC=%winbootdir%\COMMAND\COMMAND.COM :XC1 IF NOT EXIST %winbootdir%\COMMAND.COM GOTO XC2 SET COMSPEC=%winbootdir%\COMMAND.COM :XC2 IF NOT EXIST C:\COMMAND.COM GOTO 4D0 SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM :4D0 Hope this helps. ____________________________________ Sorry to hear about your problem, never heard of this kind of bug.As I said in a previous post: http://www.msfn.org/board/?s=&showtopic=46...ndpost&p=481793 unfortunately I can't test a LAN network environment. If anybody else in this forum can test this on a LAN, please let me know if there is any WinME file installed by 98SE2ME that slows down Win98 SE network transfers. Many thanks.
  17. 1. I thought of LAN [local network] transfers, but unfortunately I can't test that kind of environment, my only connection is the 1 to the internet.2. You won't miss any patches, because I always add them to the forum thread when I get [come up with] new/updated ones: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=46581 and I also always test all new WinME patches to make sure they work [or not] properly with 98SE2ME. If you have run the current 98SE2ME edition [options 1 or 2] you already have the most recent ME patches installed. 3. Whenever I remove a WinME file from 98SE2ME, I always detail how to get back the original one, either by installing Gape's SP2, or the appropriate (hot)fix [if any], or by extracting the respective file(s) from the Win98 SE setup CD CAB(s). Please see READ1ST.TXT, the "NEWS + CHANGES" section, for all such updates: READ1ST.TXT For example, see 2-14-2006 update to learn how to restore original Win98 SE DEVMGR32.DLL from the CAB. Hope this helps.
  18. After you install 98SE2ME options 1 or 2, you'll have WINVER.EXE 4.90.3000 from WinME CD into %windir%. That's why winver returns "Windows Millennium". This is just a "cosmetic" change, will not affect the way patches/updates/fixes are installed, no matter what. If you wish to have winver.exe display "Windows 98" [original file], just extract it from the CAB into %windir% to overwrite the one from WinME [example]: extract /Y X:\WIN98\WIN98_47.CAB winver.exe /L %windir% Replace X with your actual CD/DVD drive letter or with the drive letter and directory name where the Win98 SE CABs reside on your computer. But [thank you Petr ] kernel32.dll ["Product Version" is always 4.10.2222 no matter which kernel32.dll (hot)fix is installed or not] gives the most accurate version detection for all 9x OSes. And that's usually the one that MS updates/fixes/patches/etc [most of which are built using iexpress.exe] are looking for. Hope this helps.
  19. 98SE2ME will not recognize recovery CDs because those are proprietary CDs made by PC vendors/manufacturers/resellers/OEMs/VARs/etc. They do not contain standard Microsoft WinME *.CAB files. When you saw those error messages, which 98SE2ME option were you trying to install? Also, what is the drive letter where your Win98 SE OS is installed on? Also, if there are disk/cluster/file errors [for which you should run scandskw from within Windows in order to fix them all], autoexec.bat [which is supposed to exist in C:\ root] might be damaged, and therefore it is not possible to rename it or write to it. Also, if using any command interpreter other than COMMAND.COM [usually found in C:\ root and in %windir%] like 4DOS, some of the DOS commands that 98SE2ME depends on will not work properly. This last topic is now fixed, please download 98SE2ME 3-19-2006 edition: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349 Hope this helps.
  20. I can't use QDMA.SYS/XDMA.SYS/similar drivers on the PC I use now, because the BIOS already has support for UATA/UDMA built-in, and those drivers abort when they detect BIOS support. But if you are referring to the CD/DVD driver: I'm using QCDROM.SYS with both my Plextor CD-RW PX-W1610A 16/10/40A EIDE/ATAPI and with my Pioneer DVD-115 EIDE/ATAPI 16x DVD 40x CD drives. Works great. Hope this helps.
  21. For the purpose of changing folder/directory attributes, the DOS mode ATTRIB.EXE works just fine in any version of Windows. Moreover, Windows will not complain [in most cases] that it has folders in use, only files in use. Therefore one can change most folder attributes from a DOS box [example]: attrib c:\progra~1 -r +a attrib %windir%\fonts -h -r -s attrib %windir%\inf -h attrib %windir%\sysbckup -h Note that in order to change a folder atrributes using attrib.exe you must type the folder name not followed by any backslash nor file name(s) nor "wild" cards. The only annoyance is that you can't change subfolders attributes the same way you do with files, unfortunately the /S switch doesn't work with subdirectories. Also, you can't use wild cards to change attributes of multiple folders, you must specify exact LFN [surrounded by quotation marks in a DOS box] or SFN folder name [in native MS-DOS mode]. In the rare cases when Windows pops up a nag dialog like "this folder... is is use", you need to exit/reboot Windows 9x/ME to native/pure MS-DOS mode, and then run attrib from there. If running an NTx OS, just dual-boot to Win9x/ME or with the "recovery console" option from the boot menu: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip21.htm#WRC The only system folder you do *not* want to change attributes is %windir%\Downloaded Program Files [short name: %windir%\DOWNLO~1]. This folder *must* have the System (S) attribute for Windows to recognize its files as properly installed ActiveX [OCX] +/- OSD controls. And this is valid for all 9x + NTx OSes. To view this folder's contents: create a new folder on your Desktop with this name: ActiveX Controls Folder.{88C6C381-2E85-11D0-94DE-444553540000} You can change/add/delete any characters before the dot [.], to match the name you want. Must not change any characters after the dot. Then to change its attributes, run: attrib -s %windir%\DOWNLO~1 Press F5 to refresh the Desktop. Then open the new folder [see above] on your Desktop. You'll notice all "Installed" strings under the Status column are gone. Now restore its attributes: attrib +s %windir%\DOWNLO~1 Press F5. You'll notice that all "Installed" strings are back. Hope this helps.
  22. To see what has been installed by rootsupd.exe, save the entire registry [using regedit -> Registry -> Export Registry file...] from before running rootsupd, then run rootsupd and then save the registry again under another file name. Then compare the 2 REG files side by side. BTW, you could use FC.EXE for this purpose [example]: fc old.reg new.reg You'll notice a bunch of new "Blob" entries. Those are the security certificate updates. More info: IE desktop icon -> right-click it -> Properties -> Content tab -> Certificates button -> view lists. Hope this helps.
  23. Please see READ1ST.TXT for details how to install 98SE2ME option 8, which installs only USB, Firewire + WDM drivers from WinME CD + 98SE2ME directory [C:\9!M] without installing the rest of 98SE2ME:http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT Hope this helps.
  24. I have not.I've been using 98SE2ME [WinME files] for over 5 years, never noticed internet/network slowdown. IMO: Could it possibly be another cause for your slowdown? This depends on too many factors, making it dificult to narrow it down to 1 cause: - time of day - day of the week - particular server - MTU/RWIN/IPMTU/Black Hole/TCP/etc registry settings: http://www.mdgx.com/modem.htm#MY http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#MTU - the reliability of your ISP - if using dial-up/56k/analog modem depends on: land line length/reliability, phone company provider etc: http://www.mdgx.com/56k.htm Hope this helps.

    No bootlog.txt

Have you looked under C:\ root? Also, if you search for BOOTLOG.TXT using Windows Explorer or Find, you may not be able to "see" it because it has the Hidden (H) attribute. Use FM (File Manager = %windir%\WINFILE.EXE) for example, or a DOS box: ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\BOOTLOG.TXT to remove H attribute from C:\BOOTLOG.TXT. More info: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm http://www.mdgx.com/newtip1.htm#DOS http://www.mdgx.com/newtip14.htm#SUYG Hope this helps.
