Cannot hook into DWM (AeroGlass 8.1 - 1.4)
bigmuscle replied to johne53's topic in Aero Glass For Windows 8+
Actually, this is not complete true. The purpose of this software is not that I want people to use it. The purpose is educational (which is mentioned on the website) and I just want to share my work with others. I really do not care if someone will not use it. What's very vague in install description? It clearly describes that DLL needs to be injected into DWM, that the injection is done via task scheduler on Win8.1+ and describes one of the possibility how to inject it on Win8. What more do you need there? There comes again the problem with user ignorance - normal user should understand that "Use A on Win8.1+ and use B on Win8" does not mean "Use B on Win8.1" and I really do not know how to describe more in detail. What's not up-to-date on this page? Yes, I admit that the information in the guide does not have to be always straight-forward and some information is scattered between different pages. But that's why we have this forum - I don't understand something, so I will use this forum. However, the purpose of the forum is not to create million topics with the same question. And almost all repeatadly asked question has already been addressed here. You can, for example, browse through old topic - it is not rare that there is a question, answer to this question and one post below is the same question asked again. Do you think there is some solution to this? User does not search, user does not read and he does not even read the last post in the topic and asks again the same thing. Is it ok? About the installer... you are partially right with this. In the early development, I already considered that there will be no installer at all. But I was asked many times to do, so I did it. -
Does it generate some minidump files in Aero Glass folder? If yes, could you upload some of them?

Yes, this post was from me some time ago when number of keys was limited. At this time, anybody can deactivate any key at any time and generate new key. So there is no problem with this any more.

Good question. I have not checked the difference between frame and accent color yet, but I may inspect it for the upcoming release. Hopefully it will be implemented as an option rather than a change, some of us like the two different colors If it should be made optionable then there is question if I should change anything. User can already modify registry values (DWM\ColorizationColor + Explorer\Accent) to have matched or different colors for these two parts. The only situation where this will not work is when automatic colorization is enabled. Maybe this would require more user feedback/opinions how to change this: 1) leave as it is now = DWM\ColorizationColor for frame color and values in Explorer\Accent for accent colors (anyway, build 10525 changes this so I will need to adjust it too) 2) use Explorer\Accent colors for frame color too 3) use DWM\ColorizationColor but adjust its value to be more similar to accent color (this happened in pre-Win8 - different final color depending on transparency on/off) There was also a request to blend blur effect. I found there is Direct2D arithmetic blur effect which could be suitable for this. But I don't know where it makes sense for performance reasons.

Gatharian: You can change border size by modifying your atlas image/layout. In other words, if you use theme with borders, it will have borders ;-)

Cannot hook into DWM (AeroGlass 8.1 - 1.4)
bigmuscle replied to johne53's topic in Aero Glass For Windows 8+
No, Aero Glass is finished software and ready.... for advanced users as stated on the website. The concept how it has been designed will never be changed. That's how this software works. Sure, but we can blame users if the "undesirability" is created by the ignorance to reading any guide. Sure, and that's why there was no real glass effect in WindowBlinds, only plain transparency, and you needed new version of WB for each version of Windows. No, the goal for all software is that user should read the guide how to setup the software correctly. -
Cannot hook into DWM (AeroGlass 8.1 - 1.4)
bigmuscle replied to johne53's topic in Aero Glass For Windows 8+
If you open the guide on my website, what's written on the first 3 lines? So if the user a) ignores this, b ) does not read this, c) does not understand this, he is not advanced enough... ;-) But there is more complicated problem which is probably is not possible to solve anyhow - it is point A = total ignorance of any written descriptions/helps/guides/etc. I already came across some "technical professional website" which was describing my software and showed it is buggy and does not work at all. Funny thing were the pictures showing that they downloaded version marked as "IMPORTANT: This is for Windows 8 ONLY and it does NOT work on Windows 8.1." and installed it on Windows 8.1. It's weird that it did not work, isn't it? And I think there is no real help in such situation. It is very similar about the symbols. I admit that the description on my website is not straight-forward. And it is not intended to be - if user does not want to support the development of this software, he should not get any straight-forward support from the developers. However, if he already found this forum, he can probably find that there is already trillion posts how to solve DWM incompatibility. But he will rather spend his time with registering, asking the question and waiting for an answer. -
Cannot hook into DWM (AeroGlass 8.1 - 1.4)

Actually, you should properly read this topic http://glass8.eu/guide.htmlbecause this is not problem at all and there will be no change. -
Good question. I have not checked the difference between frame and accent color yet, but I may inspect it for the upcoming release.

Good, check your registry settings. It probably contains reference to invalid glass reflection image. You can use Aero Glass GUI to modify this settings.
-
Yes, provide some minidump please (at least two of them), it is the only way to examine the problem.

Is it really so incomprehensible that this software has been designed for Win8.1 RTM (6.3.9600) and Win10 RTM (10.0.10240) and not any preview betaversion?

Theme Atlas .png - How to use it ?
bigmuscle replied to F3lixChan's topic in Aero Glass For Windows 8+
http://glass8.eu/guide.html -
Absolutely no problem here. Updates were installed, rebooted, Aero Glass downloaded symbols for dwmcore v16461 and everything works. I doubt this is something which can MS influence directly, because this kind of changes can happen with ordinary DLL recompiling regardless the real changes in the code.
-
Such conversion makes no sense. Layout file is additional file to specify regions in PNG file.
-
I really do not understand why you still complain about some issues of Windows preview builds when it was never said that these builds will ever be supported... I guess it is the same problem as with the Win8.1 login screen - all solid-color surfaces are currently initialized as glass region to be sure that the glass effect works even when DWM is not compatible.

how to change color of border names of the window?
bigmuscle replied to philevan's topic in Aero Glass For Windows 8+
I think this should help you http://glass8.eu/guide.html However, you won't be able to change the color of titles which are not drawn by DWM but the application manages it by itself. -
I guess this is not possible anymore. Win7/8RP blur effect was rendered using Direct3D pixel shader where value of each pixel was multiplied by BlurBalance and influenced with AfterGlow+AfterGlowBalance (I don't remember the exact formula now). Win8.1+ uses Direct2D which provides Gaussian blur effect directly and it is not possible to influence it. Also, your pictures are not comparable because you use different theme for Win7 and Win10.
-
I found the problem. It is the feature which I introduced in one of the beta - changed initialization order to ensure glass effect even when DWM is not compatible and symbols are not present. Now it always starts in fallback-mode which is reset if the glass is initialized correctly (=some glass region is being rendered). However, login screen has no glass so it keeps that fallback mode (but debug build creates the debug console on startup which has glass frame that says "hey, glass works") Now I need to find some suitable solution.

Already saw a glitch with 1.4 when getting ready to log into my Win 8.1 workstation. When the lock screen slides up, it ends up all broken up. This was after logging off only. I'm going to reboot the whole system just to be sure it's not a transient issue. Edit: It does it after bootup as well. The logon prompt background seems to jump in reducing stages of transparency as I type, as does the blue screen between logon and the actual desktop. But all the problems seem to be limited to the logon process. Everything on the desktop seems to be working okay. I can live with this. I don't see this problem on my machine. Everything looks correct - is it really related to Aero Glass itself? EDIT: yes, I was able to reproduce it - it seems to appear in release only but not in debug build. weird :-/

Version 1.4 is just successor of 1.3.1 regardless the Windows version. May be I used wrong words but "hardcoded symbol patterns" simply means that you can be 100% sure that this version does not need external PDB files for DWMCORE/UDWM up to this date (should be 9600.17795). Version 1.3.1 was 100% ensured only up to build 9600.17415, but if I remember correctly significant changes after 17415 were only in 32-bit Windows. It should work but only experimentally. You may need symbol files in some cases which were not released by Microsoft yet.

I probably cannot. It is application problem if it draws something to titlebar and I cannot influence it.
