  1. The converter installs under Word 2000. So, can someone post a word document made under Word 2007 that I can try to open with Word 2000? Thanks.
  2. Here's a couple of patches taken from www.grc.com years ago, that are said to close and/or open port 139. Works on Windows 98/Me. Any one want to test them and confirm that they work on their system?
  3. Does restarting in DOS mode create a RAM Disk, where the DOS files are placed? I'm asking this because I seem to remember working on a notebook without a Floppy or a CD drive many years ago. I did it this way: 1. Used a cable to transfer Partition Magic from my computer to the notebook. 2. Then created a D partition, with that application, on the notebook, and formatted it. 3. Used the cable again to transfer the Windows 98 setup files to a folder on D drive. 4. Rebooted the notebook in DOS mode, and using: format c: wiped the C drive. 5. Then, still in DOS mode, typed in: d:\win98\setup.exe, and the installation began. Am I just recalling this wrong, or does this appear to be a workable solution?
  4. Thank you for continuing 98/Me support, especially in the Browser area. Very much appreciated!
  5. Any word on an unofficial version of "WindowsXP-KB925454-x86-ENU.exe" for Windows 98/Me with IE6SP1? It's the latest Cumulative Update from MS.
  6. It's an nice idea, but the Windows/IE integration is pretty complex, and would make a difficult project. Far beyond my abilities, for sure. Interesting enough, when Vista was in the very early formative stage, some sites were saying that the whole concept of .dlls was going to be discarded, in favor of self-contained applications, where everything would be installed in one folder. Delete the folder and the application would be removed. But, of course, MS continues on with their complicated way of doing things. A good example of what I'm talking about would be Foxit PDF Reader. You just put the executable anywhere you want and the program works.
  7. Rats! I meant to say Samsung. Most of my previous printers were Canon. Anyway, I bought myself an old prrinter cable and will use that when I run 98.
  8. Canon ML-2510 printer USB under XP installs fine. Trying to install the same setup under Windows98SE. The printer installs okay using 98/ME drivers, but there appears to be no option to use a USB port, only the parallel port. Anyone know how to get it to work with USB? Thanks.
  9. Can someone please post a link to the Sun Java 1.5 update 10, at the official Java website. I took a look around, but can't find it, only the update 9. Thanks.
  10. I'd like to see some screenshots of Vista under the Classic UI. Especially interested in how the toolbars, control panel, start menu look, compared to the Classic UI under XP.
  11. So, one could "borrow" a Vista Setup Disk and install/run it for 14 days, just to get the feel of it, and check out the various features? And the serial# and activation wouldn't be a problem during that time?
  12. It appears to me that you can install Vista without a Serial Number (although it warns that there will be problems). Can someone confirm that this is the case? I'd like to know what happens if you continue the installation without a Serial Number.
  13. Congratulations on NOT installing IE7. It really is a piece of crap. Anyone who thinks otherwise should go to the Microsoft Newsgroups and check out the thoughts of those who have downloaded and used it. Microsoft has said, many times, that IE6 will continue to be supported under XP/2000 for the forseeable future. Good news for those who want to stay as they are. No official support or updates for IE6 under 98/ME, but there are unofficial patches being posted on the net. You might want to check out the latest version of Firefox.
  14. Update for Oct 6/06 is out, but I'm having trouble accessing their server and some of the alternate download sites. Does anyone have a working link to the definition file SE1R125 05.10.2006? Thanks.
  15. Thanks for helping to circulate this unofficial IE925568 patch. I probably would have missed it in the original post. The work these "patch hackers" do is really appreciated by those of use still running 98/Me machines. I installed the patch and checked out the test page. My IE6SP1 browser running under Windows Me passed without any problems at all. We should have some kind of mailing list that will keep everyone in the loop when it comes to unofficial patches and upgrades.
  16. Much appreciated! Can you tell me what the "Microsoft Office 2003, and WindowsMedia/DRM" plugins are for? How are they accessed or used? Thanks.
  17. "I've heard, and in response, the next release will have a shortcut on the startmenu." Just wanted to say thanks! Looking forward to your next release.
  18. I, too, would like to request a "all users" shortcut in the next release. Thanks for making this patched version of FF available to all of us!

    IE7

You're doing nothing wrong. IE7 (so far) is an unfinished work, and a bit of a piece of junk. Microsoft started out with a lot of enthusiasm for the new browser, but I think they've lost interest. Don't expect much from the end product. The interface remains fixed and cannot be customized. Preferences often slip back into the defaults, some webpages still don't render properly, etc etc etc. When these problems are brought up in newsgroups, the standard answer is wait for the final, or better yet, wait for IE8.
  20. Anyone have a direct link to this patch for Windows 98-ME?
  21. Attn: Shark Many thanks for posting your work! I'm curious about two things: There is no confirmation windows saying that the files are installed (although they are). Was this by design? The installers don't work in Windows 98. I get a error message "7-zip, unable to create install folder". What's going on here? sam13484
  22. Here's the registry fixes that I use to disable and enable Standby. standby.zip
  23. I don't use Windows Update, so can't get the "Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications application" that is being discussed. I'd like to get a copy to test on my machine. Is there anyone who can provide a direct link to it? Thanks!
  24. So far, there is no way to customize any of the toolbars, despite what you might have heard elsewhere. MS has stated, for the record, that the address bar will be permanently locked in place for security reasons. No word on the other toolbars yet. If I could hide everything but the address bar, I'd be a happy man! Until that happens, all this nonsense about MS listening to feedback is crap. I've seen a lot of complaints about the toolbars, but MS has remained silent on the subject (with the one exception of the address bar).
  25. Is this the full install or do you have to be connected to the net to run it? I have: 6.3.0.1008 and it's 2.5 MB in size. this one seems a lot smaller, at 1.34 MB.
