  1. Which model Acer Laptop do you have? @jaclaz - If the BIOS allows booting from eSATA - why would he need to alter the standard XP installation? AFAIK, people have been able to boot XP from eSATA devices without any trouble before.
  2. Your main problem is that you're running 80mm fans. The smaller the fan diameter, the faster it has to spin to profide the same amount of airflow - thus making it louder. What kind of case are you running? Are your fans connected to the fan headers on your motherboard? If so, you can either try enabling the fan control that most BIOSes have (usually under "Hardware Monitoring" or the like), or downloading the latest version of SpeedFan and controlling the fan speeds that way. SpeedFan will also let you keep an eye on your temperatures to tell if everything is within par. If worse comes to worse, a new case that uses 120mm fans might be in order instead of new 80mm fans. I'm guessing that any Antec case (which comes with Antec TriCools - set them to low) would be much quieter than your current setup.
  3. For a basic file server - processing power is not needed. If you can find an E2100-series CPU for cheaper, then go for that. It'll do quite well for what you need. What are the rest of the parts that you have? Make sure to indicate what kind of connector each one is (for example PCIe vs AGP for the video card). I'm just trying to make sure that all the parts will work together.
  4. I'd recommend getting a motherboard with a newer chipset than the Intel 945. This board uses the much newer P35 chipset, and shouldn't cost too much more than the board you were looking at. You might want to consider an additional SATA PCI card for any additional hard drives that you might have space for.
  5. Amsterdam itself has TONS to see. There's a museum called Nemo that's definitely worth looking at. Before you go, get yourself an International Student Card (ICIS is what it's called, I think). You'll get discounts on lots of places - museums, attractions, restaurants, etc etc. Oh... and you have to see the Red Light District... must. Drag your parents along (dispite the wierdness). France - all the typical touristy attractions in Paris are actually a lot of fun, but if you want to go exploring elsewhere in France, there's tons to see. You could make a "castle trip" to see the various castles and forts from the medieval period.
  6. Like the title says, I'm looking for a wireless headset (not headphones). The only product I've been able to find so far is the Motorola HT820 Bluetooth Stereo Headset. This review speaks highly of them... but I'm wondering if anyone else knows of any alternatives for me to check out first.
  7. Like S.SubZero said - this is against Apple's TOS. We don't permit discussion about illegal activities on MSFN. Topic Closed
  8. Try the video card update first, if that doesn't help... I managed to find this after a quick Google. It's a lot of reading, but there are two KB articles at the bottom that might be applicable as well. Also... overclocking a system that isn't stable to begin with is not a very wise idea. Everything should be running well before you try to overclock.
  9. I'd also like to know a bit more about what you're looking for. The term "file server" is pretty varied, ranging from a simple second computer with hard drives, to a redundant server setup with fail-over support and dedicated RAID controllers. What are the hard drives that you have? Are they all the same, or separate sizes and manufacturers?
  10. SSE3 is only used by some programs, and for the most part, isn't a "make or break" feature for a CPU (unless you're running OSX). In your case, I'd go for the Athlon64.
  11. There are already other polls for this type of question. Poll closed
  12. On all the various machines I work on... Windows XP Professional SP3 Windows XP Professional x64 SP2 Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 Windows Vista Business SP1 Fedora 8 64-bit CentOS5 32-bit CentOS5 64-bit OSX 10.5 RHEL5 64-bit I chose 10-20...
  13. Moved to correct section. Looks like a nice clean website!
  14. Whoops.... Yea... it's a little short of 100%, but it's still a stupidly high OC.
  15. I'm not sure where you got your sources from, but the E2100 series CPUs are VERY good overclockers. I've got one that's been running in my workstation that's overclocked from 1.8GHz to 2.4Ghz, with nothing more than a little increase in FSB. I've even managed to lower the stock voltages while running at that speed. You can see in Punto's signature that he's taken the E2180 to well over 3GHz. I know that jcarle's taken his E2160 to 3.2Ghz - that's a 100% OC! I can't remember the last time I heard of anything that good coming from the AMD lineup ASUS P5K-E - $150 Intel E2160 - $80 OCZ Platinum 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-800 - $45 There you go - all the lickings for a pretty sweet Intel overclocking system. Next time you get some coin, go for that instead of the Black Edition. The AMD Black Edition are like the Intel Extreme CPUs - they've simply got their multipliers unlocked in all directions (Intel Extremes allow for 6-20 multis IIRC), but otherwise...
  16. That program you're looking at is WinBar. Some other options include TrueLaunchBar and Samurize. Hope this helps.
  17. Your laptop has an S-Video output port. This means that you can connect your laptop to your TV and watch something that's on your computer. You're right that you'd need a TV Tuner for you to watch TV on your laptop. Hauppage makes good USB based TV tuners that are relatively cheap. Hope this helps.
  18. I'll agree with cluberti here. In the end, the security of any modern operating system is "good enough" for most needs, provided that the users don't allow themselves to be an opening. Part of the reason why malware isn't written for *nix systems is that their userbase is very limited. You're never going to collect as much personal data from linux users as you could from Windows users - simply based on market share. We are, however, seeing more and more malware targeted towards OSX now, since Apple's marketing campaigns (i.e. slander) have done well for Mac sales.
  19. But it's considerably slower at compression for a given resulting output size. And it uses more RAM... and people who aren't entirely techno-savvy have a harder time with 7zip than they do with WinRAR (for the most part). They each have their advantages.
  20. Haha... not if Canada has anything to say about it. Which part of Finland are you from? Do you speak Swedish at all?
  21. Welcome to MSFN!!! Hope you find what you're looking for. If you don't, just ask!
