  1. Actually... cache sizes can matter quite a bit depending on what you're doing. I've written programs that end up with a good 30% boost in speed from simply using a CPU that had twice the cache.
  2. P35 chipsets seem to have a lot of headroom when it comes to overclocking. I'd recommend the Asus P5K series, or the Gigabyte EP35 and GA-P35 series. Personally, I'd go with a motherboard that has the ICH9R chipset (It supports RAID) for the added flexibility of setting up RAID arrays (only use RAID0 or RAID1 with the onboard though...). In your case, by grabbing a Wolfdale CPU and overclocking it, you'll be pushing the motherboard and the CPU. If you run into a wall when overclocking, you'll have to figure out which component is holding you back. That being said, I've heard of people using the E8400 easily hitting 4Ghz without any second thoughts.
  3. Chances are people simply buy DDR2-800 because they don't know any better. They think somewhat blindly that faster RAM will give them better performance. Overclocking is a bit of an art, and can be risky. Remember - you're pushing your hardware beyond it's designed limits, so there might be a point where it doesn't work anymore, or you might break something. The less you push a component past its rated settings, the less risk (in general).
  4. There is no need to make multiple topics for this... it's the same system, and can be discussed in a single thread. Topics Merged
  5. I've got a Scythe Slipstream 500RPM fan on my TRUE right now, and it keeps my Q6600 at 42C at load. I'm sure that with a higher speed fan it would run even cooler. The slipstream fans are fantastic. Just get one fan for the TRUE. Two fans won't gain you much cooling performance, and in some cases, can make it worse. The fan clips are strong enough. You don't need extreme amounts of pressure there - just enough to hold the fan in place.
  6. I'll have to disagree with this... The trend of increasing market share is starting to slow down, as people realize that Firefox is not always what it was cropped up to be. Look at the number of security vulnerabilities that have cropped up in FF1.5 and FF2 in the past two years. Severe memory leak issues, that everyone knows about and nobody at Mozilla wants to talk about, don't help the matter either. THE choice of browsers is whatever browser suits you most. I personally prefer Opera, but my parents don't like it. My girlfriend uses Firefox, so do many of her roommates. My thesis advisor uses Firefox for one reason alone - Zotero, but if it weren't for that, he'd prefer to use Safari. The fact of the matter is that there IS choice about what you want to use. Edit - as an addition to my previous statement... the more market share you hold, the more apparent your flaws become. Look at this bug in OSX that my friend found. Apple couldn't even properly handle errors during copy/paste until just a few months ago. They quickly released an update that fixed this bug, but seriously... it's not like we're talking about very complex code here. The same concept applies to Firefox's growing market share (as well as Opera and Safari for that matter).
  7. I know nVidia drivers have a "Force TV Detection" option enabled, and I'm pretty sure I've seen similar settings in the ATI CCC on my laptop.
  8. NCIX.com - XFX GeForce 9800GX2 From the pictures, it does seem like it's a dual PCB layout (I'm guessing because of the DVI ports in two different slots.).
  9. Yea, we've got a 30" Apple Cinema display in our lab, and it's simply gorgeous. Part of my problem with owning one would be that it simply wouldn't fit vertically on my desk at home.
  10. You mean something like this... 24" in the middle, and 20" to the sides.
  11. Hooray!!! We've crossed the 2,000,000 credit mark!!! Go team!!! BoincStats - MSFN.org team stats
  12. Laser and wireless are not exclusive. The Logitech G7, for example, is a wireless laser mouse. In my opinion - there isn't that much advantage to laser. I'm still using an LED based Logitech MX518, and it does very well for me in just about every aspect. Wireless technologies have come a long way since that archaic mouse you've been using (), but they're still not perfect when it comes to interference from other wireless devices.
  13. Actually... CentOS is essentially a free copy of RHEL. The CentOS development team won't touch a piece of code unless the RH guys do, which is a good and bad thing. We're running CentOS on all of our servers here at the university, and except for a kernel panic due to faulty drivers, everything's been fine (the kernel panic has since been sorted out and is no longer panicing ). I'm running Fedora8 x64 now on my workstation, and I like how they've made things a little more subtle. As for updates, I've just got a weekly cron job that does the updates for me at 4AM every saturday. I'm usually not in the lab at that time, so my work isn't interfered with.
  14. Works fine for me under Vista SP1. Both IE7 and Opera 9.26 work properly. That's a very strange bug... Do you have any special JS settings in IE?
  15. Mirrors and diffusers inherently waste energy, so they're not all that great from a so-called "green" perspective.
  16. Zxian.org - Personal site KwikPiks.com - Image Hosting site Technical Misinformation Assault Team - Something jcarle and I came up with, but hasn't gone anywhere yet. My studies and his work have kept that site from developing into something really interesting UBC Fizz - Hopefully the future home of the UBC Engineering Physics Student Society homepage.
  17. This is still a problem. LEDs are not at the point where they are comparable to CFL and incandescent bulbs from a price perspective. We've just begun to see LEDs appear in traffic lights and car brake lights, but the light that comes from those LEDs are relatively directional, and wouldn't be viable for home lighting purposes.
  18. I've got a WSXGA panel on my 15.4" laptop, and I couldn't imagine going any lower for my next laptop. I don't think that I'd get WUXGA on a 15.4" screen though... that's getting a little too small for my tastes. The main reason why higher resolutions show up on "smaller" laptop screens is because you're typically sitting closer to a laptop than you are to your desktop LCD. The overall size of the screen might be larger, but try to imagine the angle between your eyes and the two edges of the screens. You'll likely find that the laptop and the desktop LCD screens cover roughly the same area in your vision - hence the need for the same resolution.
  19. The Antec 900 is a pretty good case. It gets a little cramped in there if you have a lot of equipment, but has great airflow and is built very solid. The case is completely screwed together - no locking clips or tabs here. It's a tradeoff between a really solid feel to the case and ease of installation. Since I don't bother with changing the configuration of my system too much, it's been a good setup for me. I'll try to take some pictures soon... I need to get the Accelero S2 for my 8600GT, which has found it's way into my system again... for that matter, I might as well provide an updated parts list - see the above post.
  20. *drumroll* I picked up a few additions to my workspace this week.... I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. The cabling is a work in progress (I just got this finished, and it's almost time for bed), but everything else fits VERY nicely. 21. PicoPSU is exactly what you're looking for. They've usually got efficiencies of 85% or higher.
  22. I use a combination of AnyDVD, DVD Shrink, and AutoGK to make my AVI files.
  23. Hi there!!! Welcome to MSFN!
