  1. Kaspersky 5.0 -Requires to have a full virus scan every 30 days or something. I cant perform a full scan every 30 days so i need to know how i can turn this off or reset the counter (as it alerts me all the time)?. When my system starts i usually get the warning "Your computer has not been scanned for ** days. You should perform a full scan now......" Thanks
  2. Ive never had a problem with JV16 - which is more than a regcleaner
  3. If i installed SQL on a server (WinServ 2003) and required my users to connect to a database that i have on SQL - would i need to install SQL on every machine in order for them to connect to the database? If no how would this be done? and finally how many copies of SQL can i use on different machines? Thanks
  4. I dont think i can run my PC if it was running on around 4 processes, i use it for too many things and i just guess it wont be running right if i did the same as Jeremy!!!!!
  5. I think when you say auto can you mean AutoCad, if so the first thing to do is update your video card drivers. If youve already done that you need to select AutoCAD or ADT from the dropdown box, then use the search to find the correct way to remve it from your machine. Remember to re-start your pc before reinstalling and shut down everything running in the background, (anti-virus, firewalls etc etc) hope that helps
  6. A - I have to say yes Dell's service is (hands down) majorly crap!!!! B - I dont think so, I had the same issue with my XP CD. My personal opinion is that i call Dell - Get passed to around 5 departments (no joke) before i even get to the right one - even when ive picked the correct option. There sales team are crap, tech support - never really called them but again i guess thats totally useless too. I think Dell is going down............
  7. Yes i believe i need a server. I appreciate your suggestion however Ive not mentioned everything i would be using this server for since there would be a max of 5 people connecting. so far i have 50GB of data stored on different DVD RW's so having that in one location would be very convenient. I do believe that figure would rise. Functions - Well i'll have to read up on that but mainly storage and possibly a profile to allow users access rights to certain programs etc etc. Network hard drive - maybe !!!! however i dont want to spend money and realise if i spent a little more i could have a lot more which is why i wanna get as much info as i need before getting a server. Thanks
  8. My aim was to have Visual Studio .Net installed on my laptop and help files (MSDN) on the server. However now that i thought about it i dont think that would be a good option incase i disconnect my laptop from the server then it would mean i cant use the help files if i needed them. If i was to install a program such as Nero on my server, would this mean i have to use the server machine to burn disks? or could i use another PC to burn disks? or could i setup Nero on the Server and change the registry to use another burner on the network? Hope that makes sense. My aim is to save space on my laptop (for now anyway) Thanks
  9. Thanks Don Juan. By question 2 i mean what is a tape backup option? it sounds as if its backing up something so im unsure if i need this option or not or whether i can do without it. Would you recommend building a server or just buying one ready made? Thanks
  10. Thanks for the help. The link regarding question 1 tells me how to restore the wpa files ONCE the system has been installed. If i was to install XP on my system using my Dell disk, it will not ask me to activate, im assuming this is due to dell building in the activation on the installation disk so if everything matches it wont ask to activate the copy. I want to copy that file (the file with the activation code i guess) onto a newly created disk with SP2 which is from my friend to avoid having to activate it as if it was my original disk. Hope that makes sense Thanks
  11. I managed to get hold of a XP Cd with SP2 (Legal way - see my previous posts) so now i need to know: 1. How and which files do i copy over from my old XP CD so that the system does not ask for the product key and i wont need to activate it (If i use my previous CD from Dell it automatically activates it and i get no problems with that) 2. I think the SP2 CD does not have WMP 10 how could i integrate WMP 10 with my current installation so i wont need to update it via Windows Update? thanks
  12. Judging by the error i think the file is missing. If not try to disable pop up blocker or add the site to your secure sites section to see if it makes a difference.
  13. MCT - now why didnt i think of those links???????????? mmmmmm probably because i needed a simple answer rather than a huge explanation and a huge explanation if i know the simple answer is worth reading up on. Thanks anyway. Ive added to them my favourites Bilou_Gateux - Thanks very much that helped. Ill read up on NAS and the other links provided. Again thanks
  14. Check this, it may help: http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php...5514#post205514 I thnk they have a zip file that may make things easier
  15. I posted this a while back and had no replies. There must be someone out there that must have some sort of idea!!!!
  16. Guys, Im thinking of buying a server and im quite lost with what i need and what i dont need. As you all know speaking to a sales advisor is simply useless as all they will do is push you for the most expensive one and make it out that you need everything. So i have come across a few questions. My requirements for a server is to store data (such as files, documentation that uses up a lot of space on my laptop) and probably have my laptop connected to it when required. I may think about creating a profile so if other users connect to it (using my laptop) i have set the profile on the server. Max users would be 3/4. I probably be running Windows server 2003 trial version to see if its of any use to me. I need to know what the following are and what they do please: 1. Hyper-Threading technology 2. DIMM sockets 3. Tape Backup Options 4. Non-Hot Swap for hard-drives 5. 2 x PCI Express (x8, x1 connectors) 6. Drive Controllers 7. Embedded 2 x SATA 8. Software-based SATA or SCSI RAID 9. SCSI or IDE/SATA Also ill be using a remote desktop connection to connect to the server as it will have no monitor. Thanks for your help.
  17. Guess this is a Dell CD problem only!!!! I tried what MHz said and it still gave me the usual error (usbehci.sys is corrupt or missing) dammmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. Have you tried using the "Set program and access defaults" on the given user's account?
  19. Program Files normally holds the file for the programs on the system so you cant remove them unless your reinstalling the application. (you can but itll mean youll have problems with the program in question) Documents and settings can be copied over, really depends on why you want to do this e.g. you can copy the Documents and Settings file for the admin to your user (if its an admin user). In order to keep your current users settings (such as startup folder) you need to save this file first then copy it over to the new account.
  20. Get the set up files from the Microsoft website and save them onto a floppy this will give you the option to get into RC.
  21. I tried that before, i changed the file name from usbehci.sl_ to USBEHCI.SL_ and i received the error message "usbehci.sys cannot be found" - is this what your referring to or do i have to extract the file (so it becomes USBEHCI.SYS) first then place it in the i386 directory? Thanks
  22. Try the following command in RC (Recovery Console) with your XP disk inserted: expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll d = should be the letter of your CD drive.
  23. Just for the record it would just be the original CD without any add on programs. The only add on it would have is Service Pack 2, no nero and anything like that. Thanks to all for their comments and help.
  24. I've come across this one before and SOMETIMES the following works (remember to backup your registry before going ahead): 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type regedit, and then click OK. 3. Locate and then click the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan 4. In the RasMan key, locate and then click the ObjectName string value. This should be set to LocalSystem, if not change it. 5. Locate and then double-click the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25 6. Delete it. 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to delete the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26 8. Quit registry editor, and then restart your computer. You may also want to reinstall IE via the c:\windows\inf folder
  25. I have an original XP CD which i cant create a slipstreamed CD with SP2 (see http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=28193). To save time i need to have it as a whole package. If i "borrow" an XP CD with SP2 from my friend and use MY product key that i think is found in the winnt.sif file. Would this be illegal? Would i need to activate this copy or not? Since my original CD does not require activation as i had it with my system from Dell, i think the activation is built in or something. If it does require activation what files could i copy over to the CD or what do i need to do in order to prevent it requiring activation so that it runs like my original CD. Im not trying to overcome activation all i want is to run an XP with SP2 CD as if it was my orginal, but its not my fault Dell screwed me up on this one. Thanks
