My Browser Builds (Part 4)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Getting some more time to take a breathe is always a good thing. TBH, I have actually always thought that there is no digital barrier in terms of computers and internet that cannot be overcome, by whatever means. As a European and German, I naturally have no idea what such a barrier really looks like, how it is technically realised and what the consequences of discovering a circumvention might be at your location. Your life and well-being come first in any case, of course. Greetings from Germany, AstroSkipper PS: You are undoubtedly the one who made it possible for me to extend the life of my Windows XP computer by years. I will always be grateful to you for that. And I hope it will never end! I am definitely a Windows XP die-hard fan as you surely know. -
My Browser Builds (Part 4)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
I fervently hope that this will never happen. PS: Consider not liking your last posts as a sign that your fears will never come true. Liking of such posts would be pure madness. -
Yep! A firewall for an old OS does not necessarily need updates or to be more recent. As long as it works, it is an option for users of Windows XP or Vista. That's why I listed PC Tools Firewall Plus here. And Privatefirewall is already on my internal list, too. However, thanks for mentioning it!

My Browser Builds (Part 4)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Hello @roytam1! Breaking the walled internet by using a good VPN service would not work at your location if this unbelievable (from a European perspective) case happens? Or to put it another way, is the use of VPN services allowed or possible at all in Chinese regions whose internet is walled? In any case, I sincerely hope that nothing bad will happen. We appreciate you and your work, and need you here. Your browser editions are legendary, essential and extremely important for users of legacy OSes. Without them, a new dying process of XP and Vista would probably begin. Kindest regards, AstroSkipper -
Mypal 68 is not a fully portable browser. It writes additionally entries in the registry, needs files in the folder c:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\Mypal68 to find its profiles and uses of course profile folders where ever you created them. To make this browser fully portable you have to make a research in the internet. There are many sites which provide detailed instructions or tutorials for creating fully portable applications.

That was probably me. Have a look here: All 360 Extreme Explorer editions have to be excluded in WiseVector StopX. But unfortunately, this program was abandoned. Anyway! Thanks so far! You are very helpful here.

PC Tools Firewall Plus PC Tools Firewall Plus is a personal firewall for Windows that helps to protect computers against unauthorised access via the Internet or a network connection. By continuously monitoring all network applications, Firewall Plus prevents Trojans, backdoors, keyloggers and other malware from damaging a computer or stealing private information. PC Tools Firewall Plus is XP-compatible and free. Comprehensive protection against attacks and known abusive programs is enabled by default. Experienced users can additionally create their own advanced packet filtering rules (including IPv6 support) and customise the network security mechanisms to their specific needs. Features: Filtering of incoming and outgoing network connections; Using global rules for ports and protocols that are set separately for each network; Creating network access rules for programs that are already known; Creating rules for programs that have a valid digital signature; Control components and hidden processes and process memory; Setting limits on network activity for individual programs and processes, and for incoming and outgoing connections separately; Ability to visually alert you to a variety of events through pop-up windows; Ability to visually display network activity through an icon in the notification area; Availability of programme activity log; Possibility of displaying information about the network activity of each programme; Two modes of operation: basic and advanced; Possibility of hiding one's computer from intruders; Minimal use of network and system resources of the PC, so it is not an obstacle to playing games on the PC or watching streaming videos on the Internet. It is supposed to use less system resources and it is free of charge. After my research, I think PC Tools Firewall Plus is an option for Windows XP. Unfortunately, I personally never used it for a longer time, so there is nothing more I can say. Cheers, AstroSkipper

As we all know, MSFN is already represented on Twitter and Facebook For the future case that MSFN is not available for a longer period of time (several days), a short message there would be desirable. You don't have to have a Twitter or Facebook account to read such a status message. Personally, I am not a social media fan, but if such accounts already exist, then perhaps they should be used. Unfortunately, when MSFN was down on 03/06/2023, there was no message. Nor on the following days. The last messages were from 2019. Such accounts are then of course useless.

Actually, with this statement, any further discussion is moot. We are apparently waiting here for a decision by the forum owner or administrator and hope to receive information at their preferred location the next time MSFN fails. Whether one can participate in discussions or ask questions there as a profane member remains to be seen. Suggestions like MDL or Eclipse have disqualified themselves for various reasons, and further discussions by members will only lead to @Dave-H having to delete posts again. IMHO, we should spare him this work.

That's totally clear. The best fix would be a new, not vulnerable CPU. But, just for clarification, you think my performed test of New Moon 28 gives incorrect results on my computer. You consider Pale Moon browsers vulnerable in general, unlike current Firefox browsers. Right?

Thanks for your information! My processor is an Intel Pentium 4 32-Bit single core in my Windows XP Professional computer. This CPU is vulnerable to Spectre and Meltdown, of course. But as I am aware of, don't we need to distinguish between a CPU and. a browser in terms of vulnerability? I think so! Especially after what I have read. At least, that's presumably the reason there is a CPU test and a seperate browser test.

You didn't answer my indirect question. Your video is not helpful at all. Mypal 68 closes when uBlock Origin is installed. And now? Do you run Mypal 68 in single-process mode? This is the only stable mode. Anyway! Running Mypal 68 under Windows 11 is not a good idea and actually nonsense. Try this browser on a computer with Windows XP or Vista! More recent OSes do not need this browser. Here is a quotation from @feodor2's GitHub page: Cheers, AstroSkipper

Hi @dimo70! Actually, Mypal 68 is a browser targeting old operation systems. My OS is Windows XP Professional 32-Bit, and Mypal 68 runs perfectly here. I don't know why you want to run this browser under Windows 11. There, you can use much more recent browsers.

But it is listed under the Microsoft Windows forums. Here is a link: Windows Vista Honestly, it doesn't really matter what sub-forums exist on MDL. Here, in this thread, we are looking for a place where MSFN members can talk when their forum is down for whatever reason. This place to be chosen therefore has nothing to do with operating systems and will logically be located in a general talk area.

My Digital Life (MDL) is a great forum with less restrictions than others. I am a member there since 2009 when it was still named forums.mydigitallife.info and not forums.mydigitallife.net. But more in the form of a passive member than an active one. Already posted comments can be edited at any time. I mention that because there are many forums with a lot of restrictions such as Malwarebytes Forums or Windows XP Forums. And I agree to @Dave-H, the Chit Chat subforum would be the right place if MDL is wanted.

The link contains a table with all tested versions of Malwarebytes Premium including the version 3.5. And you expressed concern about recommending a licence for an antimalware program to users of Windows XP. So if the virus definition updates for Windows XP stop at some point, you still have a licence for a better version with a higher detection rate in a more modern operating system. Therefore, the table is very relevant. Personal attacks don't help, either. And it's not the first time! The ability to remain factual without becoming personal is indeed a virtue that not everyone can call their own.

Of course! That's why I wrote: "New Moon 28 doesn't seem to be vulnerable to Spectre". A residual risk always remains.

Additionally, I found an Online Test to check whether browsers are vulnerable to Spectre or not. Here is the link: https://xlab.tencent.com/special/spectre/spectre_check.html I performed this test in New Moon 28 (2023-05-25). Here is the result: So, New Moon 28 doesn't seem to be vulnerable to Spectre. Cheers, AstroSkipper

InSpectre InSpectre is a free program for Windows that checks for Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. Meltdown and Spectre are the names of the attack methods that can be used to undermine the security of operating systems and applications. For more detailed information about Spectre and Meltdown checks this website: https://meltdownattack.com/. There you will find following reference documents: https://meltdownattack.com/meltdown.pdf and https://spectreattack.com/spectre.pdf. The actual check refers to CPU security vulnerabilities. InSpectre shows very clearly and concisely in the program window whether the system is affected by these security vulnerabilities or not. In addition, the program also provides an explanation of the state of the system and the performance that the PC has. The tool is compatible with Windows XP and free of charge. More information can be found on the homepage of InSpectre. No problem here in the third pre-release of Mypal 68.13.0. I use uBlock Origin 1.49.2, and it works without any problems. And from now on, even without changing the minversion in the file manifest.json. Thanks to @feodor2! Here is a screenshot: I assume either your installation or your profile is faulty or misconfigured. And be aware of possible incompatibilities to other extensions or scripts! I still didn't observe such incompatibilities until now, though, but they are possible, of course.

Such comments should actually be beneath you. Here, in this thread, it is about antivirus programs for Windows XP and not about personal sensitivities. Malwarebytes Premium 3.5 didn't have the top score results in the tests at the time, but it does work exactly as you configure it. No such problems with Malwarebytes as I have observed with Norton & Co. Here is a better overview and shows how Malwarebytes has developed up to the latest (not XP-compatible) version, which has very good scores, though: https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/manufacturer/malwarebytes/

Even though I have a clear and incontrovertible opinion of Norton, there may well be others who prefer software that makes every decision for them. All I can say is: to each their own! And of course the population is larger in the USA (than in the UK), but the English language was only imported. It originated somewhere else. But honestly, I mix British and American English very often, rather unconsciously. Don't forget, I am not a native English speaker, either!
