Of course, Avast Premier's self-protection was deactivated before I started the uninstall routine. Everyone who wants to completely remove an AV programme that has such a self-protection function should know this. But that did not help at all. It was the same with Eset NOD32 Antivirus in the past. The uninstall routine of Avast 18.8 was inadequately programmed and therefore rubbish. And AvastClear 18.8 is not much better. The way I described in the article "Why I switched from Avast! to WiseVector StopX" I quoted above, on the other hand, worked excellently, but is not readily accessible and recommended for an inexperienced user. PS: The reader should not be confused by the title of my article. In the meanwhile, WiseVector StopX has been abandoned by the manufacturer and is therefore history.

AvastClear does not need any installation. It is portable. So there is no need of uninstallation, either. But in my case, it didn't work, unfortunately. AvastClear is more of a joke. A company provides a special tool for uninstalling their products, but it fails, either. Very poor!

Hello @Cocodile! I have actually had similar experiences. Avast had always been a performance brake in my old PC. It is a terribly bloated programme package. When I tried to uninstall it a few months ago, the uninstall routine failed completely. Here you can read what I had to go through: I had similar problems with Eset NOD32 Antivirus.

Asking Kaspersky whether his competitor Avast is safe. Nice joke! I will soon ask the chef of a restaurant I visit if his food is good.

7-Zip is a file archiver. It is no security programme. It is great and my main file compression and extrcting programme. IMHO, there are no security concerns. But talking about it here is definitely off-topic. So you're right. You won't find it in any antimalware software list. But you can find a description here: In the case, 7-Zip has been updated in the meantime, I will edit my article soon.

Right! Malwarebytes is compatible with many other AV programmes, but not with Avast. If you have problems, then Malwarebytes Premium's real-time protection can be disabled at any time. In this case, you probably won't observe any further incompatibilities when using both in the same system partition. In my case, I do not have both installed in the same Windows XP partition. However, I have more than one Windows XP partition managed by Boot-US. So I am able to use different antimalware programmes on my old computer.

it's made in china just like the last working and stable web browsers for XP. google, intel, nvidia, M$... and many others who don't support XP anymore are not chinese companies AFAIK Read this quotation from my introductory post containing the conditions for posting here in this thread: No more off-topic posts in my thread! I totally agree. Same here in Germany! I do not know anyone either who is interested in using Kaspersky or do trust their products. Thanks for your confirmation!

@Dixel! Hello and welcome to my thread! Glad to hear you like my thread! I have been using Panda Free Antivirus for several months. I am generally amazed at how little resources it uses and how it protects my Windows XP computer completely satisfactorily. I hope you will find what you are looking for here. My list of all presented security programmes in the second post of this thread is just under construction, but will be maintained by me and constantly expanded, if my real life allows it and I have not to waste my time commenting on programmes that have long since been sufficiently discussed and put ad acta. Greetings from Germany to The Netherlands, AstroSkipper

The Giant Matrix home page disappeared in 2015. Their last version seems to be 9.0.1 from 2013. I assume that Anti Tracks' VPN feature doesn't work anymore in these days. For me, no problem, I use paid VPN services. In any case, I will check this programme more deeply when I have more time. First, I will add it to my internal list.

Ok! On their homepage, they indeed listed Windows XP as a supported platform for Anti Tracks. I will check whether the last version 9.0.1 is still XP- compatible, too.

You're welcome! And thank you for your contribution here! I do appreciate every new recommendation. Here is the last working link of Anti Tracks' homepage: https://web.archive.org/web/20150311172759/http://www.giantmatrix.com/ I will check it. I never used it before and I don't know whether it is XP-compatible or not. We will see. But thanks again! Cheers, AstroSkipper

Malwarebytes Premium works great in my Windows XP Professional SP3 system. No crashes, Malwarebytes is doing what I has configured, no disempowerment of the user and regular definition updates several times a day. And if you then have a lifetime licence, what more do I want in my Windows XP computer?

Here is a review of Panda Free Antivirus from November 2022, so still quite up-to-date, but in any case better than any experiences from 2015: https://www.lifewire.com/panda-free-antivirus-review-1356582 Cheers, AstroSkipper

To all readers of my thread! To avoid the impression that this is a Kaspersky thread , I would like to say a few words about this matter, although I find this topic tiring and sufficiently discussed by now without having received any new information about this abandoned, last version Kaspersky Free Antivirus from 2018 targeting Windows XP. All about Kaspersky has already been discussed in the old thread "Which Antiviruses are Known for a Fact to be Working on XP SP3 as of 2019?", where I was even courteous enough to provide a very rare installer for Kaspersky Free Antivirus 2019, which I had previously cleaned and thus decontaminated, but no longer works under Windows XP, as it turned out. Anyway! Here we go! MSFN is of course internationally frequented, but it is a forum that is localised in France and therefore in Europe. France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Poland, Lithuania and many other European countries warn against the use of Kaspersky due to significant security concerns. Even more harshly, the USA classifies the products of Kaspersky, considers them dangerous and blacklists Kaspersky antivirus as a risk to national security. The related facts, announcements and links can be found very easily on the internet. But they are known to everyone after such a long time anyway. And for such a software product, I will not make any further effort and waste my time. In any case, all this cannot and must not be ignored by an open mind. Just for clarification, I have created an internal list of security programmes, which now contains over 70 programmes. These will be presented here one by one whenever I have time to research, check and write. As always, real life comes first. Kaspersky was originally also on this internal list because I want to present all options for Windows XP. But I changed my mind about Kaspersky and removed it from my internal list. And not to get confused in this thread, here is my original post with the title "Subject: Kaspersky" once again: So, Kaspersky is history for me, and I no longer consider it an option for Windows XP. I am the creator of this thread here. I will form and fill it with contents as I see fit and can justify to myself. Anyone, who doesn't like that, can always create their own thread and post there whatever they have to say. Greetings from Europe, Germany, AstoSkipper

Subject: Panda Free Antivirus Some months ago, I had carried out my own tests with the result that Panda Free Antivirus detected and deleted my test malware. In a real Windows system, not in a VM. So, I can confirm that Panda Free Antivirus is fully working. It is one of the rare antimalware ptogrammes which are still up-to-date and still receive programme updates under Windows XP. However, we all know the real security problem is very often in front of the computer. In such cases, a good programme like Panda Free Antivirus can't help anymore, either. Cheers, AstroSkipper

Hello @winvispixp! This is very important. My thread about security programmes is targeting Windows XP only. You can see that easily in the headline of this thread, in my first, introducing post, and once again here: Apart from that, we are here in the Windows XP forum. Kind regards, AstroSkipper

Unfortunately, you did. This sentence is written in inverted commas and in the first person. Thus, you speak in my place. I said: "one" is an impersonal pronoun and therefore does not refer to you personally. AstroSkipper
