Install IE8 on 2003 without Windows Update?
tomasz86 replied to GrofLuigi's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
It's strange... I've just checked the update.inf and there don't seem to be any conditional prerequisites around. I can install it even in Windows 2000 after changing just a few lines under [Version]. Could you upload your log file (the one created in %windir% when trying install IE8)? -
It seems that BlackWingCat has been experimenting with the kernel and CPU/RAM support difference according to the edition of Windows 2000. http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/archives/1618044.html#more http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/archives/1620055.html#more I'm posting it here because I think it may be interesting, especially for WildBill. By the way, would it be a problem to implement multi-CPU support into your kernel, WildBill? BlackWingCat made this patch long time ago: http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/archives/1163868.html

Each person may have different reasons for using Windows 2000 1. In case of older hardware upgrading to XP doesn't make sense as there are only 2 years of support left and buying XP now wouldn't be a very clever choice. Theoretically you could buy Windows 7 Professional and downgrade it to XP but it's not cheap ($200). 2. As for security, most of XP's updates have already been ported to Win2k so the known security holes are fixed. 3. Many applications still support this system and many others work fine even though they are officially compatible only with Windows XP or higher. Additionally, many normally incompatible programs work too if you've got the unofficial kernel installed (WB or BWC), ex. Office 2007. For others you can use KDW. Of course not everything works so it all depends what you use your computer for. I don't see any problem with using Win2k as office/Internet machine. 4. Windows 2000 is the last M$ desktop operating system targeted specifically to professional/business users so it doesn't have any useless eye candy and other features for extreme beginners (WinXP's search dog comes to my mind... ). Its interface is clear and simple, and also very light compared to newer Windows OSes, especially NT 6.x. Of course you could strip XP down to minimum and remove all unnecessary components but why do it if Win2k doesn't have them at all? I personally hate the extreme fattiness of Windows NT 6.x. I've got a system partition of 12 GB and still 8 GB is left free. RAM usage of my customised installation is also very low (50~60 MB after fresh installation). It wouldn't be possible with any newer Windows Of course you may say that HDDs are bigger and cheaper then before, RAM is also cheaper, etc. but fast HDDs (at least something like WD Raptor) or SSDs are quite expensive and using only a few GB of them for OS is much better then 20~30 GB. RAM also has better usage then just being the "system memory".

Do you plan to add Unicode support? Now it looks like this when system locale is set to Polish

Future versions of Firefox on Windows 2000
tomasz86 replied to ppgrainbow's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Browncoat, Have you tried any of these kernels yet? I really doubt you'll experience ANY issues with them. Both of them have been used for a pretty long time and all bugs were already fixed in the initial phase. -

You can find WildBill's kernel at bristols updates list. Look for KB2393802. Links to BlackWingCat's kernel & MS VC++ 2010 SP1 are already mentioned in this topic. They are pretty safe, especially the older version of BlackWingCat's kernel (v5) can be said to be perfectly stable as I don't think any issues with it have been reported. So should this version of Firefox not work in Windows 2000? It works fine here -

Not being supported does not mean that it won't work... In case it's compiled in VS 2010 you can just either: 1) Install BlackWingCat's MS VC++ 2010 SP1. 2) Install WildBill's kernel or BlackWingCat's kernel. -
You may try this method.

By the way, I quickly compared the new v10a of BlackWingCat's kernel with the newest version of WildBill's kernel. 1. APIs present only in WB kernel: AddLocalAlternateComputerNameA AddLocalAlternateComputerNameW AddVectoredExceptionHandler CopyLZFile CreateMemoryResourceNotification CreateNlsSecurityDescriptor CreateSocketHandle EnumerateLocalComputerNamesA EnumerateLocalComputerNamesW GetCPFileNameFromRegistry GetDllDirectoryA GetDllDirectoryW GetExpandedNameA GetExpandedNameW GetHandleContext GetModuleHandleExA GetProcessId GetSystemTimes GetSystemWow64DirectoryA GetSystemWow64DirectoryW GetVolumePathNamesForVolumeNameA GetVolumePathNamesForVolumeNameW IsValidUILanguage LZClose LZCloseFile LZCopy LZCreateFileW LZDone LZInit LZOpenFileA LZOpenFileW LZRead LZSeek LZStart QueryMemoryResourceNotification RemoveLocalAlternateComputerNameA RemoveLocalAlternateComputerNameW RemoveVectoredExceptionHandler RtlCaptureContext RtlCaptureStackBackTrace SetClientTimeZoneInformation SetHandleContext SetLocalPrimaryComputerNameA SetLocalPrimaryComputerNameW SetThreadUILanguage 2. APIs present only in BWC kernel: CheckRemoteDebuggerPresent The rest of the included APIs are the same. This list is related only to kernel32.dll. There are other files included in WB kernel too but there's no wtsapi32.dll which BlackWingCat added to his kernel.

good mechanical PC keyboard? (Amiga/Atari XL feeling)
tomasz86 replied to CyberyogiCoWindler's topic in Hardware Hangout
I had a model M and indeed it was very loud although I didn't really notice myself after having been using it for a long time. Unfortunately it died from an electric shock caused by a thunder :/ -
I've got similar question but related to Windows 2000. F10 doesn't work for W2K and removing [unattended] isn't very convenient as you need accept the license twice (text setup + gui part) and also get warnings about uncertified drivers (if you've integrated some) so the result is that you have to sit in from of the computer during the installation process I guess there's no other way to enable Recovery Console under W2K. Am I right?
-
By the way, blackwingcat, have you tried these drivers with PAE turned on? I can't get any of them (ver. 9/10/11) to work if I turn PAE on. The system is Win2k Advanced Server. With PAE switched off they work fine (ver 9/10, ver 11.x is unstable). I've got integrated Radeon 3000 HD.
-
RonCam, I think you should just test all of these drivers, one by one (starting from the newest ones), to check which one works If something goes wrong you can just boot into VGA mode and uninstall the faulty driver.

I had the same error several times and I fixed it by reinstalling .NET 2.0... Does anyone have any idea what exactly may cause such a corruption of .NET?

I prepared a XPS / WIC Full Pack which is inspired by this addon originally made by Yumeyao and updated by ricktendo64. It's not the same as not all files are supported in Windows 2000 (especially the newest versions coming from W7 are usually not). I also added WIC and XPS Viewer. Windows2000-XPSWIC-x86-Global.exe (HFSVCPACK_SW1) WildBill's kernel is requried.
-
I prepared one more update: 914783 - XMLLite 943729 - new Group Policy preferences Windows2000-UU-KB914783-KB943729-x86-ENU.exe Slipstreamable from HFSVCPACK_SW1 folder.
-
No problem I use it mainly to view and do some small modifications in documents. I wouldn't rely on it if I had to prepare something from scratch. By the way, if you need something for PDFs (viewing & editing) then ezPDF Reader Pro is probably the best application for that. Polaris Office can open PDFs too but can't modify them.
-
Don't you have anything pre-installed? I've also got the Galaxy Tab but it came with Polaris Office which is not bad... although you can't expect from it to have the same functionality as M$ Office or other desktop offices (Open/LibreOffice etc.).
-
You're right, it's empty. Everyone loves M$
-
I know what it does The problem is that it doesn't happen through the .inf file but rather through a customization dll which is included in the UPDATE folder. HFSLIP won't slipstream this file so there's no chance that it'll work. This is my prediction as I'm unable to test it at the moment.
-
Mim0, are you absolutely sure that 2603381 can be slipstreamed from HF? Have you tested it? I'm asking because it uses a customization dll to modify the registry. EDIT I'm almost 100% sure that it must go to HFSVCPACK_SW1.
-
I'm not sure about it at this moment but it might be necessary to put 2603381 to HFSVCPACK_SW1 when slipstreaming in HFSLIP. I'll try to test it when I've got some time.

Thank you MacLover for useful information and thank you BlackWingCat for these updates I've prepared some new updates too. Added: MDAC 2.81 HBR Rollup - 950982, 960071 & 961451 combined into an update rollup Script 5.8 (v2) - updated jscript.dll to the newest version 953024,970063 - two new HBRs as one update (files overlap each other) 959334 - a new HBR 971913 - a new HBR for MSI 3.1 2584146 - updated version of packager.exe from Jan 2012 Security Bulletin; available in 24 languages 2603381 - update from Jan 2012 Security Bulletin (registry fix only) Removed: 960071,961451 - merged into one rollup together with 950982 Script 5.8 - replaced by Script 5.8 (v2) Download PS I've also been testing MS12-006 but I think it'll be better to wait for some time before making a W2K version, just to be sure that there are no issues related to it.

As for Msconv97.dll, there seems to be version 2003.1100.8202.0 available too! http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921606

Or you can "force" an installation of a Spanish Service Pack into your French system. I can't guarantee how the results will look like though
