  1. Mine used to boot in 30 seconds, reduced to 20 using BootVis, computer is also set to automatically obtain an IP address (to play LAN games) Most apps don't work until its obtained an IP, so that takes a minute or two.
  2. Apps on CDs rarely have copy protection. So first check it with "ClonyXL" to check if it has a protection. If not, do a 1:1 CD Copy in your standard cd burning program. If ClonyXL brings up anything like SafeDisc2, ProtectVOB, or Overburn protection, then you will need to copy it with CloneCD. The "CloneCD Games Database" is also useful to tell you what settings to use to copy a particular game. Sorry, I'm in a rush to find links for above, try google.com
  3. Yes, you can password-protect your screensaver. To do this, your login account must have a password set as well.
  4. I shared one of my CD-ROM Drives, permissions is set as "Everbody" with full control read/write. On another PC, when I browse the "My Network Places" to my shared CD-ROM Drive I get an error, Access Denied or something, (its been a week since I last been at my LAN) Sharing hard drives work no problem, but not CD-ROM drives. hmmpf! Guest account is enabled btw.

    Which MOBO?

Any chance that the Athlon XP processors will work on my 2 month old Mobo? (MSI-6380 K7T266 Pro)
  6. While you have Messenger open, open up a command prompt, and type netstat or netstat -a It should bring up a long list, you'll easily find Messenger in it. on mine, I found this: TCP PC1:2641 msgr-ns56.msgr.hotmail.com:1863 ESTABLISHED but it doesn't mean yours is the same, messenger uses different MSN servers.

    Live

I have to register to see your room??? Bah.
  8. Rick... you have probably deleted lots of WinXP downloads thinking that they are bad.... but they're not! If one of the rars get corrupted, then re-download that rar, don't download the whole thing again!
  9. You shouldn't open Winrar then open the cue file. You should have a pack of all your rars (.rar .r00 .r01 and so on) all in one directory. Simply right click on your rar file and select "Extract to name_of_file/" The rars will extract, and a new folder will appear, with your bin/cue in it. Then burn the bin/cue with Nero/Fireburner/CDRWin
  10. hmm... I can download about 5 or 10 files at a time here, worked in IE4/5/6 But I always use a download manager for downloading files now.
  11. Not sure what you mean by fixing it...? If you're talking about the * in http:// then its the forum rules.
  12. Brilliant tool this, it scans your OS for any missing hotfixes you should have installed then tells you which ones you need to get to patch up your security holes. ht*p://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/Release.asp?ReleaseID=31154 Windows Update won't tell you, but this neat tool will! For NT/2K/XP Only!
  13. Its better to test out Mozilla on its own. Netscape uses this engine. but its without the bloated crap Netscape add to it. Mozilla = 9Mb Netscape = 26Mb see? ht*p://www.mozilla.org I hardly use it, but I still keep it on my system as a backup. It won't mess with your IE file associations either.
  14. hmm sounds like a pain in the a**. Having to get a new software update every single month and signing up for a new username and password every single time?
  15. I've heard about sophos a couple of times, and they seem to be a good antivirus company who concentrate on a single peice of software. Is their software free to use?
  16. Yeah, I wouldn't touch beta firewalls either. I've seen people requesting the ZoneAlarm 3.0 beta, but I wouldn't touch it until it came out as final.
  17. If you put the files in a temp folder, then the bin file will be put there after you run the "next boot+ driver delays" function.
  18. To drastically reduce your boot time, use the BootVis app from Microsoft. and run these instructions in this order: [i:d23743e165]Run bootvis, trace menu, next boot+ driver delays, 2 repetitions. let it reboot twice, start bootvis again and load newest .bin file it created, select optimize system and let it do it's thing. after it's finished optimizing run boot+driver delays again and see how much shorter it is.[/i:d23743e165] Get BootVis from here: ht*p://www.microsoft.com/HWDEV/fastboot/default.htm It cut my boot time by 15-20 secs which is pretty good! Also - To speed it up even more, assign an IP to your network card if you have one, and disable the Welcome screen (configured in Control Panel > Users)

  20. I saw your screenshot, are you using cleartype? The fonts look very nice. I might try out Cleartype when I get back on my XP machine. I heard cleartype was for laptop and TFT screens only, would it be ok on a normal 17" monitor?
  21. iMesh runs on its own network. Not sure what Bearshare runs on?
