  1. I decided to try out VoptXP and upon starting up, I could tell instantly it was coded in Visual Basic. Now would you let a program coded in Visual Basic defrag your hard drive? No way! Uninstalled!
  2. The version of ClonyXL they host is very old. Instead, get ClonyXXL 2.0.0.6 Final from: http://www.clony.tk/
  3. http://elby.ch/english/products/clone_cd/download.html page says 4.0.1.6, but the executable is 4.0.1.9

    Changing XP Icons

There is also Microangelo 5.54, if you find IconPhile to be limited in some areas. Both of them are the best icon apps to use on Windows XP for the time being. http://www.impactsoft.com/

If you phoned up Microsoft, and asked them if SP1 betas leaked on the net is considered as piracy, they will say yes. FthrJACK - go on, phone up Microsoft UK, and ask them! OK, no more links to beta IE6 SP1, Win2k SP3, or XP SP1, or any other betas in future on MSFN.
  12. At last, a site that indexes all the XP Icon sites out there. Its been hard to keep up with old sites falling out due to host problems and new ones popping up. This site makes it a lifesaver! Thanks Babis!
  13. 1 - Its OK to run Windows Update for the time being, but its been accused of being Big Brother: Windows Update Becomes Big Brother: The following information can be found in Windows Update, and then click on About Windows Update in the left side bar, and then scroll down to Windows Update Privacy Statement. The points that I stress, and believed have been updated since recently are in bold: Windows Update Privacy Statement Windows Update is committed to protecting your privacy. To provide you with the appropriate list of updates, Windows Update must collect a certain amount of configuration information from your computer. This information includes: Operating-system version number and Product Identification number Internet Explorer version number Version numbers of other software Plug and Play ID numbers of hardware devices The Product Identification number is collected to confirm that you are running a validly licensed copy of Windows. A validly licensed copy of Windows ensures that you will receive on-going updates from Windows Update. Windows Update does not collect your name, address, e-mail address, or any other form of personally identifiable information. The configuration information collected is used only for the period of time that you are visiting the site, and is not saved. To provide you with the best possible service, Windows Update also tracks and records how many unique machines visit its site and whether the download and installation of specific updates succeeded or failed. In order to do this, Windows generates a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) that is stored on your computer to uniquely identify it. Windows Update records the GUID of the computer that attempted the download, the ID of the item that you attempted to download and install, and information about your operating system version and Internet Explorer version. Because Windows Update does not collect personally identifiable information, the configuration information and GUID cannot be used to identify you. Probably nothing to worry about, everyone with a corp copy is still using Windows Update. 2 - I would wait off installing the final SP1 when it becomes RTM on July 15th. Let the crackers test it first, and they will come out with the best solution on how it should be installed. 3 - Yes its safe to grab patches from Windows Update for the time being. All could change if you tried to access Windows Update if the final SP1 is installed.
  14. Automatic Updates on Win2k notified me of this update before the security email went into my inbox! Looks as if Microsoft are now putting in the effort of keeping their Windows Update site with the latest patches as they come out, which they were slow to do in the past. Good thing!
  15. DOJ investigating RAM? Are RAM chips doing something illegal? a monopoly? Or are you mistaking the whole thing and actually meant the DOJ investigating Microsoft?
  16. Right Click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > User Profiles. From there you can select some profiles to save elsewhere. But it doesn't seem to allow you when you're logged in. (It works when logged in Win2k) So log in a Guest and then save the user and admin profiles.
  17. Didn't do anything. Win2k still prompts me for username and password to access XP shares. doesn't prompt again until next reboot. Still annoying though. wish it would let me in instantly without asking for username and password. XP can't access Win2k shares, access denied. Bah.
  18. Some of the links in the thread to Microsoft's How-To Articles and the white sheets explain the multi-boot process. This link reflects exactly what you suggested and I thought it might be helpful: Installing More than one operating system. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/usi...ted/meandxp.asp http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/us...ual_booting.asp never mind!
  19. Should I give it Admin rights as well LS_Dragons?
  20. I just use a Hub and Cat5 cable, like I did on my other LAN. Firewall or no firewall, it still does it, Win2k machine and XP machine. But anyway, I told Kerio Firewall to assign my NIC to the trusted network so everything works flawlessly (remote control, ICS etc)
  21. well I've adjusted the workgroup name and IP addressing, which is all thats required really when moving a PC to a different LAN. Yet there is still a conflict with the account, so I'm gonna start over again fresh with unique login names when I format both my PCs in a couple of days. (they're due for one anyway)
  22. I've had my PC in another location for a year with three other PCs belonging to my mates, all our folder shares were perfect, and could be accessed no problem. However, I've now taken this PC home, and connected this to the network to my other home PC. On accessing shares on either machine it will either ask for a username and password to access it, or deny me access at all, it works in very strange ways. I've come to the conclusion that it could be that I may have the same account name, and could be conflicting with each other?
  23. The thread about dual booting ME and XP seems a bit unrelated to Win9x/ME OSs reading NTFS partitions don't you think MSNwar?
  24. WinXP would have to be installed into a FAT32 patition if you want WinME to read XP's files and folders. This is because WinME doesn't recognise NTFS. Although... I believe there are third party applications that allow you to read NTFS partitions when you're in Win9x/ME. I saw one on Betanews.com about 3 weeks ago. Try searching on Google.com or FileForum.com.
  25. Very useful, bookmarked. I may also add that Mike Lin's StartupCPL is one of the best startup programs I've come across where you can control what applications you want loaded at startup or not. Its much better than MSConfig IMO http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
