How to Solve Hanging/Frozen Application Problems
DigeratiPrime replied to JonEdens's topic in Software Hangout
Have you tried booting into Safe Mode by holding F8 during boot? BTW it's NTFS filesystem, not NSFT which looks like the stock symbol MSFT Also Vista has the "Windows Backup and Restore Center" http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-v...res/backup.aspx -
mmm according to my Keepass Group: over 70...

msiexec /a that will produce a non compiled installer.

First what Operating System and SP is experiencing this problem? And if this a 64-bit machine does it happen with both versions? Second I would try opening dxdiag.exe from the system folder with Depends to see if any run time modules fail to load. http://www.dependencywalker.com/

svchost.exe (username = network service) max out cpu usage
DigeratiPrime replied to scarslilpyro's topic in Software Hangout
Hmm, looks ok. I was going to suggest running the command below, but it will not show cpu time. tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe" I would download and run Process Explorer (freeware) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb896653.aspx Open the Properties of the process causing the problem For svchost processes, go to the Services tab and Stop the services one by one to see if one of them is responsible. Then go to the Threads tab and sort by 'Cycles Delta' to see if there is still a thread causing a problem and what it is. A screenshot of that window would be telling. -
svchost.exe (username = network service) max out cpu usage
DigeratiPrime replied to scarslilpyro's topic in Software Hangout
Malware most likely. Post a HiJackThis log http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/to...ools/hijackthis Booting into Safe Mode may disable it temporarily. -
64-bit counterparts for "codecs" are not always available.

5 month of new computer does not boot!
DigeratiPrime replied to cumminbk's topic in Hardware Hangout
Well overclocking can cause instability - meaning the logic circuits misbehave and errors occur. This happens due to exceeding voltage or temperature (e.g. by increasing the frequency) specifications. It sounds like in your case the CPU was failing to read or execute the BIOS. -
5 month of new computer does not boot!
DigeratiPrime replied to cumminbk's topic in Hardware Hangout
If a system resets or hangs indefinitely without an error message then the hardware is probably at fault. I suggested resetting the CMOS because you said you we're overclocking and doing that would return the BIOS defaults. But then again if you were overclocking through the BIOS, you should probably know how to reset it already. Also since you know it's not the stock heatsink - tells me that you or someone changed it and may not have properly bridged the heat sink and "Integrated Heat Spreader". -

Try resetting the CMOS by removing the power cord from the power supply and the battery from the motherboard for a few seconds. Do you see anything on the screen? If so what was the last thing it said? Any error messages? Can you enter the BIOS menu? EDIT Risks of Overclocking the Processor The truth of CPU degradation -
VirtualBox Error with 64-bit VM's .. can anyone else confirm?
DigeratiPrime replied to graysky's topic in Software Hangout
That' what I did - I marked it bold now. And both the host and guest are 64-bit. -
VirtualBox Error with 64-bit VM's .. can anyone else confirm?
DigeratiPrime replied to graysky's topic in Software Hangout
I figure it might be a problem with the guest additions so I tried to replicate the bug. I have different hardware, but I put Windows 7 (host) into Sleep while my Windows 7 (guest) is running. I then woke the host and the guest was running fine. I restarted the guest and still didn't get that error message. -

Thanks, you're the Acer expert I see it does have vents on the side panel.

I have a suspicion that something might be misconfigured on the XP system, and not necessarily the D-Link NIC. Last thing I would suggest trying is installing that NIC in the Vista pc and see if XP can access the shares - I doubt the adapter could be sensitive to application layer protocols Lest us know if you find anything.

I didn't ask if an IP was assigned, I asked if the IP and DNS were set to be obtained automatically. Review these instructions: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=130003 If you force a memory dump while the XP system is hanging, I or someone here might analyze it to see what was causing the hang. You will probably need to upload it somwhere else, like rapidshare.

4 DVD-RW Drives, Can I Burn 3 DVD's At Once?
DigeratiPrime replied to Redhatcc's topic in Software Hangout
More ideas: First make sure the image files are defragmented on the hard drive. Or read the images off separate USB drives - USB 2.0 can do 60MB/s. Stop programs, services, and disable the network interface - to reduce IO usage. Then maybe increase the IO Buffer Size; the default is 40MB and the maximum is 512MB. Might want to do some tests with DVD-RW media first. -
The only mystery is why you can access the shares on the XP system from the Vista system when connecting through the 3com LOM but not through the D-Link NIC. Create a new share on XP, just an empty folder, and try connecting to it. Basically do you have two ethernet cables going to the XP system, or just one? I want to know if you are testing with the same cable. On the XP system are both adapters set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically"? Do you have any firewall software on the XP system?

As I said web management is usually disabled over wireless - for security reasons. If you can associate with it, you could try SSH (port 22) and Telnet (port 23). BTW you can install DD-WRT on the Belkin F5D7230-4 though a Wired connection is strongly recommended and you must use TFTP. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/TFTP_..._Belkin_F5D7230

So you do have shares on both machines then. XP can see the Vista shares and traverse them when the onboard 3com lom is used. And Vista can see the XP shares and traverse them when the onboard 3com lom is used. However when the D-Link is enabled and/or connected ( I guess the 3com is disabled and/or disconnected) Vista can see the shares on the XP machine, but XP hangs when Vista tries to traverse them. Are you using the same ethernet cable when you change between the 3com and the D-Link? What is in between these two machines, a Switch? Check that all the Network adapters are configured for Auto Negotiation in Device Manager (devmgmt.msc). Example:

The Acer Aspire 5100 is a notebook not a desktop... So what case do you really have? I also think a better case would solve this type of problem - 12cm fans are great. Is Cool'n'Quiet enabled?

Install InSSIDer (freeware). http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider Are there any Access Points (AP) on the same channel as yours? And what is the RSSI of your AP? You probably don't want to double NAT yourself by having two routers - see if you can configure the Belkin router as an access point. What model is the Belkin router? http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Suppo..._Devices#Belkin
