It might be related to the XP audio files included in the update pack. I know I have a problem of sound being totally disabled if I install any sound devices AFTER installing the unofficial update rollup pack.
-
Launch update.exe, then close explorer.exe down completely via task manager and try again.
-
So basically what you're saying in a nutshell is we're screwed on this and it won't work on Windows 2000?
-
Thanks for the upload! Even though I have the archive as well, it'll be great if more eyes can look at this. As I can see right now, what I posted earlier is what is ultimately stopping us at this point. KDW Wrapper also doesn't help here so I think we're missing something vital. I don't know if blackwingcat can figure it out or not.

The installer itself can't be unpacked like that but it may be possible to grab some files from %TEMP% once the installer has been started. This requires some trial and error testing, and time to do it (lack of time is the real problem ) That does work and I'm looking into it now. My error is slightly different but it's the same file in question. I ran it through dependency walker and this is what I have encountered. Second chance exception 0xE06D7363 (Microsoft C++ Exception) occurred in "KERNEL32.DLL" at address 0x7C59BCB1. I will continue to work at this but I don't know if we'll have much luck or not.

You still have to be careful but it's not quite as bad as the newer versions I think. The more people shift to Windows 7/8, I think that's the OS most hackers will be after and they'll forget about Windows 2000 like they probably have with Windows 95/98 for the most part.

Not a problem, it just threw me for a bit of a loop. lol Well, it's really hard to say since I haven't tried to get Windows Installer 4.5 to work again. .NET Framework is no problem since we already have a patch for that and it works great. I can't remember if blackwingcat has ever attempted it or not. But he's probably our best bet at this point. If I get a chance, I'll reinstall Windows 2000 in a virtual box and see if I can figure out how to get it going. I imagine it's probably just a matter of the right DLLs and having the right extensions in them. Another problem is I don't know what 4.5 has to offer over 3.1. It probably just allows for more advanced installations which I really don't see the point. I think more of it is just a ploy to get everyone to upgrade their systems. If they never came out with new stuff that was incompatible with older OSs, you could use the same computer and OS forever basically. But we'll see if we can get some other responses to this. I haven't even tried 4.5 on a Windows XP machine yet so I don't even know what's different.

Im sure Windows 2000 will work just fine here, does there exists any extra benefits for having it over XP? Of course the support for 2000 was dropped a while ago but you guys and all the community here are doing great job for extending it. I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes simply because UURollup contains blackwingcat's kernel and core updates which actually contain some Vista/7 extensions. Simply put, Windows 2000 with UURollup installed will have some XP/Vista/7 components in it which I believe makes 2000 a lot better than XP. Of course you still have a bit of an issue with drivers but there are even unofficial drivers that work great with Windows 2000. We've also modified a lot of programs that were XP only to work on Windows 2000 as well. I also personally believe that Windows 2000 is a bit less resource dependent than XP so it seems to have a bit more power. Funny though because my Windows 2000 computer really seems a lot more stable and less crash prone than my Windows XP laptop downstairs. But I've been using Windows 2000 for 12 years and have used it well beyond the cutoff date, doesn't bother me a bit. Oh, and tomasz86 has also created a compilation where you can install every single NET framework from MS, from 1.0 all the way to 4.0 and applications that require 4.0 really run on Windows 2000 now.

I take you can't open up the executable via WinRAR or Winzip?

My suggestion to you bud is try Windows 2000. We have LOTS of projects going on with that and there about a 75% chance all your devices will function under Windows 2000, the only thing that *MIGHT* be an issue is the Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/n. Check out the Windows 2000 projects if you're interested, but I highly recommend it because Windows 2000 gives you that Windows 98 feel and the inner works of the NT line. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/156521-unofficial-sp-52-for-microsoft-windows-2000 You'd want to look for Unofficial Update Rollups here compiled by tomasz86. I can also assist you with it as well since I'm a Win2000 expert as well.

I'm assuming you're talking to me. Well, I doubt it very much since I attempted this project about a year ago so it's very well a few additions made in UURollup could help but I still have my doubts on this. I'm curious since I haven't had any run ins yet, but do you really need Windows Installer 4.5? I'm just curious if you have any applications that require it since I don't know of any myself. I can't read the file in question, but have you tried using bwc's application utility and manually set the instup.exe or whatever it is to Windows XP? I've found with the newest firefox installs you MUST set setup.exe to Windows XP in order for it to work by manually typing in setup.exe in the file box, just dragging the installer over and setting it to XP doesn't work anymore. Maybe the same is with this as well?

^^Exactly Also, you must disable any secondary cores. Windows 98 may handle your processor but it will only utilize one core. I'm not sure what'll happen if you leave it set to dual but it's sure not to put out the results you expect. Laptops are really harder for these types of projects only because you're limited to what is on the board. If it were a desktop, you can do whatever you want basically to those things. So as LoneCrusader said, it might be very limited on what it can do if it'll work at all. But if you're really that determined, go for it! You'll never know unless you try.

Welcome to MSFN, Georgi! This might be an interesting project considering how new the laptop is. You'll definitely want to look into how to get Windows 98 running with a hard drive bigger than 128GBs and running more than 512MBs of RAM. As for drivers, try using Everest Home Edition to figure out what drivers you need. Having Realtek High Definition audio might be challenging but I don't know if it's impossible or not. Maybe you can help us a little more as well by telling us what hardware you have in your laptop since laptops come with different variants at times.

Nevermind, believe it or not, it was actually fabricated due to an incompatibility from the WinZip 15 program I had installed earlier. Somehow it was messing with the right click and would crash explorer every time. I will reinstall the pack since I just uninstalled it and see what happens from there.
-
I found a bug. Anytime you right click on something in explorer, explorer crashes with a critical stop error and the typical cannot read or write complaint.

Skype 6.9/6.10 seem to require Windows XP Service Pack 3, and it seems to me an error I had when it was installed on Service Pack 2, it was related to CPU info or something like that. I doubt that answers your question but I think it might help you get started. All I know is the newest Skype versions will NOT work on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and below.
-
I think my DVD was almost 200MBs short of that, so I don't know if that means much or not. But I didn't have any errors during setup except for it complaining about the Windows installer service right at the end of setup, I think it was under either start menu items or the next one about the registry. I can't remember. But other than that, the only other trouble I had was right after I logged into Windows and it started complaining about appwiz.dll and the only way I could continue was to cancel out the command prompt windows that accompanied it, then it went to the desktop. But setup went pretty smooth which is why I don't understand how this happened. I've tried a long time ago and it wouldn't work for me, but maybe blackwingcat will figure out a way around it. Alos, your UU Rollup is quite old, try one of the daily versions. I've been using the latest one for quite some time and I haven't experienced any problems with it.
-
It's possible, I might wipe it and reinstall. I didn't put any protection on it at first since it was only used for Skype and nothing more, since then I had put antivirus and a few other things on and it hasn't found anything bad but the performance itself just seems kinda sucky. I'd just use Windows 2000 on it but my video cam doesn't work on anything below XP which is why I went with XP to begin with.

Okay, so I reinstalled Windows 2000 on this computer and even after a router swap and completely disabling security, I still have the same problem. But I did a little more testing and here is what I found... While on the Windows XP computer, I cannot copy files from the Windows 2000 computer, but I can copy files to the computer, but not from it. While on the Windows XP computer, I CAN copy files from the Windows 98 computer and vise versa. The Windows 98 computer is directly wired to the router so it is not wireless. Now this one goes to blackwingcat or tomasz86, could the Unofficial Update Rollup have anything to do with this? It's a bit late for me to go uninstalling it but could something from that be causing this issue and making Windows XP go crazy?
-
I also don't think it's stupid, I hate when people say you should just use Windows 7...or 8 *shutters*. I'll use what I want! But as far as I know, the latest GeForce usable in Windows 98 with official drivers is the nVidia GeForce 6200, but I think it'll go up to the 88xxs if you use the unoffical drivers. Don't quote me on that but I know it'll go higher. Using a Creative SoundBlaster Live! should be a good card for you as well. Sound to me is sound, I don't notice a difference much between the Live! and the Audigy or even a few of the other ones.

I can't test that at this time because I installed Windows 7 on that machine however, I'm now at another very interesting issue regarding that. Usernames and passwords between the machines are identical and the Windows 7 machine can see and do whatever it wants on the XP machine but the XP machine is halted in its tracks asking for a valid username and password (All neccessary file sharing properties have been checked and enabled). But a detail I forgot to mention that happens on all XP machines that connect wirelessly all say Unable to find certificate to log you into network. I updated my router from Linksys to Belkin about a year ago and it's possible this happen since then. But I even went as far as disabling all security on the router, reconnected, and still got the certificate message. I'm really wondering if that has something to do with this. Unfortunately, I don't know how to fix it. Several sites suggest turning off Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network but that is impossible because it's completely whited out so there is no way to check or uncheck it. So that's where I am. If need be, I will reinstall Windows 2000 on that machine to test this out but where we are right now is the former Windows 2000 machine with 7 can copy and delete files on the Windows XP machine but Windows XP machine fails to log onto Windows 7 with the same username and password at all.
-
You're right, for this particular issue, it doesn't seem to have many answers since it all leads to either FAT32 or external USB Hard drive explanations. But to answer your question, while I'm on XP, I cannot copy files from the Windows 2000 machine but I can copy files to the Windows 2000 machine. I believe I could also copy files from Windows 2000 to Windows XP while being on the 2000 machine as well but I cannot test that at this time.

How thoroughly tested was this? I downloaded the cabs and put them together using the copy /b command and exported everything to the HF_SLIP program, it went through integrating and made an ISO, but I installed it and it was all messed up. The Program Files and WINNT folder were completely inaccessible. None of the programs were on the start menu except for the very default. Add/Remove Programs didn't function at all. The control panel was all messed up, it didn't have the side bar at all. It was just all broken. Even during install right at the end it said something about the Windows Installer service couldn't be accessed. Then when I first logged in, it complained it couldn't find Appwiz.dll or something like that. Something just went horribly wrong when trying to do this.

I'm at my wits end for this problem. I have three different computers in play on my network, a Windows 2000 machine which is my main computer, a Windows 98 computer which is my secondary, and a Windows XP laptop which is only used on occasion. All three are connected via my Belkin wireless router and the only computer to use a wire is my Windows 98 machine. But here's where my problem gets interesting. Windows 2000 and Windows 98 have no problems copying files between each other. 98 copies from 2000 and 2000 copies from 98 flawlessly. Windows XP on the other hand...does not. When I try copying files from my Windows 2000 computer to my Windows XP computer from the XP computer, I get that same message! Cannot Copy File, The Parameter is Incorrect. I've looked far and wide on this problem and nothing really makes sense. The external hard drive issue is debunked because it won't copy from the main drive either. I set up network shares, that doesn't work. I can see everything on my computer but when you try to copy and paste, I get that stupid error message. It's not just the laptop either because I've installed Windows XP on a client's computer and I had the same problem right after a fresh installation. I honestly haven't tested copying files from the Windows 98 computer to Windows XP but I know in the past I've never had issues like this. It's getting me very upset because nothing really seems to solve my problem. It's bad enough I might have to upgrade my Windows 2000 computer to at least Windows XP because I have a piece of software that just will not run on 2000 but I cannot have these issues on my network either. I really utilize my home network for what it was meant to be, not just to share the internet and this is beginning to be a big problem for me. Any input would be appreciated!

KernelEx Apps Compatibility List (New)
Tommy replied to xrayer's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Goldwave 5.52 under KernelEx appears to work except when you go to Help, About, then click okay, the program crashes. I'm testing it now and it seems to work fine otherwise. This is under KernelEx 4.5.2 and no specific modes selected either during install or application launch.
