Well, I got the BIOS flashed and everything seems well! I do have a slight option to overclock now it seems but advanced bios features is so advanced... It has first, second, and third boot device and password setup. That's all. I figured there'd be a lot more to it than that. But what's more pathetic is I've found at least two or three spelling errors/usage errors. Not a big deal I guess but I just noticed it anyway. XD What I don't like is it doesn't have an option for quick or thorough boot. I'd rather it really test the memory at startup but it really doesn't seem to. Oh well, at least it works and does what I need it to. Thanks for the information though!

That's interesting. So if I flashed it with F9, that would change it into AMI Bios? That's the part that is throwing me off a bit. I never heard of the BIOS software itself changing after a flash update.

I can't find any specifics at all. Maybe the motherboard ID will help? 07/02/2003-KM400-8235-6A6LYG0RC-00 (As reported by Everest Ultimate Edition)

Nope, no USB connections in use here. I have a standard PS/2 Keyboard and mouse. The only other things I have plugged in are my 32" Toshiba LCD TV and connection for sound along with my network cable. I think those are the only things I have plugged into the back of it. I can also vouch that this happens via Windows 98 SE Gold and USP3, neither version matters.

http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=7495.0 A couple posts down has screenshots of what I see, maybe someone can make something from it? And yes, I thought it was strange too that the options are so limited especially since I can't even overclock anything. Usually I don't want to anyway but the idea is the options aren't even there. But since it is a Micro ATX (I believe that's what it is anyway), that might make a bit of a difference too. But the AMI BIOS from Asrock I have in this computer has all those special features in it. That's why I was expecting a lot from Award but this particular version is very limited. (Reply #3 specifically shows the AMI flash utility I was talking about)

I have another problem that is baffling me with Windows 98. I have the latest USP3 installed on it along with KernelEx 4.5.2, whether it matters, I'm not sure. Anyway, board specs are here to make things a little easier: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=1670#sp Everything is onboard except for the new PNY nVidia GeForce 6200 AGP 256MB card I just added a few days ago, but the problem existed even before that. It's also running an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (1.8GHz) CPU and I have 1GB of RAM in it (2x512MB sticks). When I go to shut the system down via shutdown, it never fully shuts down but instead it comes up saying "Windows Protection Error. You will need to restart your computer...Press any key to continue..." Doing so will result in a never ending beep from the motherboard until you shut it off or soft restart it. This would happen even during a restart and I linked it to the sound manager from the onboard AC'97 sound adapter. It was the manager that caused the problem so I disabled it from even starting up and so now I can restart with no problems, but actually shutting it down completely is when I have the issue again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That's what I thought was strange too. D: This is definitely my board right here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=1670#bios I believe it has the F3 update it in already which is what Everest reports. Strangely enough, when I download the BIOS update and go to launch it, it too says American Megatrends Inc as the copyright. But the BIOS release dates are exactly the same which really baffles me. I've never seen anything like this either. I'll leave it for now but if anyone wants me to post a report on what Everest tells me, I will.

So, I just got my hands on a free computer. It's a custom built one that has a Gigabyte GA-7VM400M motherboard in it. It has an AwardBIOS (yay!!) but I was a little disappointed how mediocre the bios really is. Usually a custom built PC should have tons of BIOS options and this has very few to say in the least. So, I thought about flashing the BIOS with the latest version available. I downloaded it from the site and when I went to open it up, it says American Megatrends Inc. on the flash utility. Hey, wait a sec. I have Award! How can it switch the version entirely and still work properly? Has anyone else come across something like this? I don't want to flash my Award BIOS with something else and break it.
-
Well, I do use Windows 2000 on the machine, it does have a Windows XP License Key on it. It did come with Windows XP installation media as well. Anyway, I'm willing to venture a little bit in the unknown.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies! I did flash my bios with the 1015 version found on The Lost Brain. It did take since there's an energy star logo on the Dell logo but I don't really notice any other changes. Since someone mentioned the service tag, I did write it down. The service tag is: BRQ32F1. Let me know if you can make anything from that! Edit: I originally had the latest 1015 BIOS version from Dell so I had to do the DOSFLASH version and I know it took as I watched it flash so I don't know if you guys can make anything else from this or not.

That's what I was looking at too and I didn't see anything on it. But as cut down as Dell made the BIOS, it's quite ridiculous. You'd think that they'd at least allow you to see your system specs during the POST like most computers do.
-
This is one of my pet peeves with a computer, an annoying OEM logo that cannot be disabled. This computer apparently has one of those. What I want to know is, is there a way of displaying POST results instead of a stupid OEM logo. Usually there's a key or even a setting in the BIOS for this, but Dell went out of their way to make sure you cannot view POST results. Anyone know a way around this? I've been looking all over online and haven't really found anything about it. The BIOS is an AwardBIOS with very locked down settings. I've always preferred Award but this Dell version is ridiculous. I'm also using the latest update from them, I think it's A15.
-
Well, I'll tell you. I love that program but I'm a little worried about using it now because I did it a few times on a Windows 2000 machine and after rebooting, I'd get a blue screen saying Invalid License Key or something to that effect. It basically ruined my install. That was probably about a year and a half ago but I haven't tried it since. Can you verify that this works flawlessly and won't ruin my install?
-
That does make sense. It was upgraded with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT but I put it in this computer when I switched them. Even though the other was better, I custom built this one pretty much so its kinda special to me so originally it had the NVIDIA in it put now it just has the standard Intel Onboard graphics. I just made the registry change and I'm waiting to restart it. Hopefully it'll work. Still having a Chrome issue. This is such a hit and miss issue and it's driving me nuts. Sometimes it works flawlessly on certain installs and other times it works when it wants. You go and open a tab and try to launch a page and you'll have the little circle going backwards like its thinking, but it doesn't do anything else. You have to close the tab and try again in a new one. Even launching something internally such as the downloads tab, sometimes it doesn't want to function right either. Iron did the same thing. It's like the Chrome Engine itself has a problem. It's annoying too and I prefer Chrome to FireFox myself. EDIT: Windows Defender still won't update. I get a 0x80245001 error code when searching for updates.

I've enabled PAE on my Dell Vostro 400 minitower. I now have full use of my 4GBs of RAM (it shows up as 4GBs in the system properties). However, I only have a 640x480x16 display and even though it's set to 800x600x32 bit and it is shown in the display properties. Could this possibly be because I'm using the onboard graphics adapter which is an Intel Chipset? Also, I'm using your new HF_Slip compilation, did you disable Windows Update again? I'm having problems using the Windows Defender program to automatically check and download updates.

Could anyone else confirm? I've got two printers installed and haven't experienced any problems with choosing the default one. That's very strange. And it's something I haven't brought up simply because I thought it was only a glitch but after three different reinstalls, even on different computers, this happens. Would it make a difference if they are TCP/IP printers? I have no printers physically connected to my computer but rather both are networked through my router. This however, never happened before until I started using the later UURollup versions.
-
I'm not sure if this is a bug in UURollup or not, but it seems that everytime you restart the computer, you no longer have a default printer. All your printers are still listed, but none of them are set as default and therefor cause a lot of problems when going to print something.

Any hope of getting Windows 2000 running on my PC?
Tommy replied to Brahnix's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
The only thing I don't see working is the 10GBs since Windows 2000 Professional is limited to 4GBs. Now if you installed something like Advanced Server or Datacenter Server, I think it'd utilize more. blackwingcat's radeon driver should work. This should be the latest one that works: http://w2k.flxsrv.org/cgi-bin/dl.cgi?file=ati1204w2k.cab, the sound might work but I'm not 100% sure on that either. You might have to disassemble a driver to force it to install since I know Creative makes their only for Windows XP SP2 but taking the package apart works. AnX said switching the SATA controller to IDE. A lot of computers are starting to disallow that so you might have to create a new Windows 2000 CD and slipstream the SATA drivers into it if it doesn't work out. As for the daily UURollup v11, the link is right here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ch0oa53ew4i4fxq/iKFCqvLRNN/Public/Windows2000/UnofficialUpdatesRollup/Daily I don't generally recommend using the daily in an open environment but all the latest ones are stable as I've been testing them out for quite a while now. The latest are usually down at the bottom. If you have any questions about UURollup in general, ask tomasz86 or me. -
Or just press and hold down the left shift key while launching FireFox, that'll launch it in safe mode and therefor will not have hardware acceleration enabled then.
-
The only sole exception to this is if you use Windows Defender. Automatic updates on Windows Defender require the latest version of Windows Update to be installed but then you can go through the program, and not the Windows Update site.

Something related to Internet Explorer is in Japanese, specifically when it asks you about others being able to see what you're searching for.

I've had this too, I know whatever version is slipstreamed into his November 2012 package, it has this issue.

NT4 - Shuting down and restarting the server
Tommy replied to am12348's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Personally, I don't think it's possible but I could be absolutely wrong. What kind of scheduled processes are needed to be run with the system unlocked? Is it something you can put the credentials into the program and it'll launch it at the appropriate time? -
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ch0oa53ew4i4fxq/dlBhq8Tk0f/Public/Windows2000/UpdateRollup2/Stable This is the Unofficial Update Rollup 2, it contains MS only Windows Update files. Sometimes it is referred to as Unofficial Update Rollup 2 or just plain old Update Rollup 2. Either way, they're both the work of Tomasz and they do NOT provide any type of kernel extensions that Microsoft did not intend for Windows 2000. This is just the last of the Windows Update files that Microsoft didn't bring out as a rollup pack I believe. I think installing it will make it a completely patched Windows 2000 machine when it comes to hotfixes and security updates.

It's extremely extremely extremely difficult to install. You need the official Microsoft Windows 2000 Application Compatibility launcher, even blackwingcat's doesn't work. This is where it gets even weirder, it needs to be set for Windows NT Service Pack 5 to install. It doesn't need it to run, just to install. But trust me, that's how it'll work. I don't understand USP5.2 doesn't exist yet... What exactly have you installed? What's the filename? There is no way you could have SP 5.2, even I don't have it and I'm the lead tester. Are you sure you don't mean either SP 5.1 or UURollup v11? I'm guessing the latter because even SP 5.1 wouldn't install the NET Framework package. UURollup is not Service Pack 5.2, it's just a update rollup. It'll be included with Service Pack 5.2 along with a lot of other super great things. Which I'm thinking about getting my hands on a few early Whistler builds and seeing if we can use something from them in the new SP 5.2, I will PM you later Tomasz.
