  2. Hello dear MSFN forum. I have the following question: since I'll have to make a long trip by a train (6 boring hours) I would like to spend time using my laptop while traveling. But I have a big doubt: the vibrations, oscillations and bumps that occur during the trip can break or shorten the PC HD life when it is turned on or even when turned off? The PC in question has a PATA HDD and is built in the 2006 year. I'm not a PC expert. Best regards to all MSFN friends and thank you for your kind answers. I41Mar PS: to moderators: I do not know if this is the right forum section for this topic.
  3. Thank you PROBLEMCHYLD for your continued interest and for the great work, and best wishes for you and your family! About the community: I can say that this is the best forum I've ever met! I41Mar
  4. Hello, my little wish is to able to boot and run Win98Se from a external USB HDD drive at USB 2 speed. That would be wonderful. Happy new year 2012 to all! I41Mar
  5. @ rloew Could you kindly give me some more details about running Win98SE on an external USB HD? Have You reached a USB2 speed? I am very intrigued! Thank you. I41mar
  6. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all too!
  7. Hello! Sorry for the late replay. Currently I have the PC P3 at the computer technician shop in order to test the Syba PCI SATA card: SD-SATA150R with SIL3512 chipset. I checked the PCI card BIOS and is it the version 4.3.83. I then used correctly the PCI card, after several failed attempts with the wrong drivers, finally founding the right driver on the official Silicon Image website: - Silicon Image Serial ATA Raid driver for the SiI 3x12 controllers Ver 1.0.60.0 (File found on website: 3112Raid_x86_10600_logo.zip). The SATA HD drive is recognized correctly but the data transfer speed seems quite similar to that of the other HD drive Pata! At first impression it seems to me that the limit, right in my case of the old PC P3, is given instead by the motherboard (11 years old!) These are the PC specs: Intel Pentium IIIE Coppermine 700MHz, Socket 370, RAM 512Mb, MotherBoard PCChips M754LMR+, Chipset ULi/ALi M1631 ALADDiN TNT2, VideoCard NVIDIA Aladdin TNT2. Over the next few days I will give more precise information about the speed that I found in the following 3 cases: PATA HD (attached to the motherboard), HD Sata (attached to PCI card), USB 2.0 HD (attached to USB 2.0 PCI card). Thank you from Italy for your help, for your kindness and availability! I41Mar Note 1: So far I have not received any useful indication from the Syba support, despite the message I sent them through its official website, but at this point it becomes really irrelevant. Note 2: Quote: 'DMA checkbox comes with the default Windows drivers. Specific drivers may have one or not, at a different location. They often have no such checkbox because they always enable DMA and UDMA.' A.: I my case, in the driver's installed properties there isn't any indication of DMA checkbox, but the transfer speed is not anymore the previous slow 1 Mb/sec resulting without any driver installed! PS: In order not to use any internal HD drive, as would be nice and sweet to run the Win98SE operating system on an external USB 2.0 HD drive, booting from a floppy disk if necessary!
  8. Hello, Currently I have a PC at the computer technician shop in order to test a PCI SATA card. The technician told me that it is not necessary to replace the HD drive if scandisk found some bad sectors, as it marks them as unusable and then you can continue to use the HDD drive! It is that really true, or I am at risk of losing data? I41Mar
  9. Dear msfn forum, please help me because I have purchased and just received the PCI card product based on the SD-SATA150R SIL3512 chipset by Syba, in order to improve the performance of my old P3 PC with the Win98 operating system and carrying only connections for PATA HD drives, to be able to use also the SATA HD drives. I would like kindly know where to download the drivers for Win98SE because at product page www.sybausa.com/productInfo.php?iid=507 and also as shown on the printed package received the product in question should be compatible with MS Windows operating systems 98SE/Me / Server 2000/Windows 2003/XP/NT 4.0/Vista/7 / Linux and the drivers can be downloaded at www.sybausa.com/resource/SD-SATA150R/SD-SATA150R_Windows_98SE-Me-2000-Windows_Server_2003-XP-NT_4.0-Vista-7-_Linux.zip . Unfortunately, despite the file name, this file does not contain any drivers for my operating system (Win98SE), not even the CD that came with the card package contains the necessary drivers for Win98SE! The sata HD is accessed only in slow bios compatibility mode (at 1 Mb /sec, without any drivers!). I would like kindly to know where I can find the drivers compatible with Win98SE required to operate the SD-SATA150R PCI card that I just bought. I am in big troubles! With my best regards from Italy and thankyou for your patience. I41Mar
  10. About R.Loew PATCHPAR.EXE (and the other patches), for greater clarity: I do not know if I understood correctly, but this (R.Loew PATCHPAR.EXE) 1) is the latest patch and then all the other patches (by jds , Saunderson, the first by R.Loew by hex editing
  11. My home PC experience started in 2001, but I really started to learn a little more when I started reading this forum since about 2007. I am not definitively an PC expert! I have to agree with CharlotteTheHarlot method. Currently, my management method I have is this: PC N°1: Windows 98SE desktop PC, my first PC that is now a old 2001 PIII, used for editing documents and graphics, video clips and many games. Now is offline, but quite fast, easy and very funny PC! PC N°2: Windows XP laptop PC, bought a few years ago for my wife, but she never wanted to use it; it is used for editing documents and graphics, video clips, with a few more programs. Now is offline with an updated antivirus software, fast. PC N°3: Windows 7 netbook, of my wife, but that I can also use it; it is the worst computer I've ever been able to use, very slow, bloated and only useful for Internet access with a Internet key! Now very updated OS and with an updated antivirus software, but no joy or fun there! Then my security lies mainly on the PC N°3: the data downloaded from internet is then transfered to the other PC waiting some time, after performing another AV scan with updated virus sigs. But I think that the main security lies on the user between PC and keyboard! Hope this helps. I41Mar
  12. Some questions about the speed that can I achieve in my old PIII PC: If I want to change my PATA HD and use a SATA HD with a SATA to IDE Adapter (based on the JMicron JM20330) what would be the transfer speed R/W and the possibility of booting the Win98SE OS? The writing speed for my PATA internal HD is now about 20MB/sec, how fast will be in the case of a SATA HD? A bit OT, but not very far ... Last year I added a USB2 PCI card to my PIII PC, but the write speed has reached a maximum transfer rate of only 6 MB/sec (and not 20MB/sec - stated in product specs!). My other USB1.1 ports go up to 800KB/sec transfer rate, so overall the addition of the PCI card has been a marked improvement. But I discarded the possibility of adding a SATA PCI card, because of previous experience about USB PCI cards (too low speed of the PCI card bus? Or maybe I'm wrong?) Thank you in advance. I41Mar
  13. Hello dear Win9x forum, I have some (perhaps old?) questions: 1) If I understand correctly, I can safely use a PATA HD larger of 137GB with my PC board - that doesnt supports 48-bit LBA - only if I not partition and not format the HD part exceeding that limit, right? For example I can partition and format a 160GB PATA HD only for the first 0-136GB part, and the rest of the HD is in unused state (unalloctated)? 2) If I use a BHDD31 package (and then have an updated ESDI_506.PDR driver) I am under the same limitations because of the my PC BIOS limitations (not support for 48-bit LBA, then DDO required), right? 3) For SATA HD the only limitations are those of the my PC BIOS limitations (not support for 48-bit LBA, DDO required), right? Thank you in advance and for your great patience. I41Mar
  14. @Duffy98 You can find a updated version MBProbe at www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/hardware_utils_1.shtml and mbm 5.3.7.0 at majorgeeks.com/Motherboard_Monitor_d311.html, update 2 at majorgeeks.com/Motherboard_Monitor_5.3.7.0_Update_2_d5261.html I tried on my old PIII PC the software Mbprobe and I must say is really excellent and complete! Not only detects the GL520SM sensors, but also many other sensors types, and it is fully configurable. Hope this helps. I41Mar
  15. @Duffy98 My PC specs: Intel Pentium IIIE Coppermine 700MHz, Socket 370, RAM 512Mb, MotherBoard PCChips M754LMR+, Chipset ULi/ALi M1631 ALADDiN TNT2, VideoCard NVIDIA Aladdin TNT2. My software monitoring is 'Genesys Logic System Health Monitor' program for Win95/98/NT found on PC setup CD, but you can try to use HWInfo32 or Everest softwares. I41Mar
  16. @Duffy98 About my PIII processor. I monitored my PIII PC (700 MHZ, no cooling software, nor overclock!) processor temperature in winter time and it is about 24°C when is in idle state and reaches 36°C at full load (during dos gaming), while in the summer time is 37°C when is in idle state and reaches 48°C at full load. Based on your experience I would like to know whether the use of the software 'rain 2' lowers the PIII processor temperature also when the PC workload is moderate or high, or is effective only when the PC is in idle state? Thank you in advance. I41Mar
  17. Hello Tihiy and hello dear win9x forum! The GDI heap extender beta 1 or 2 can be installed over the RP9.7.2 or only over RP9.1.0? Thank you. I41Mar
  18. To rloew : the kernel32.dll hook is KernelEx compatible? And it is freeware or not? Thanks in advance. I41Mar
  19. Hello Rjecina Sorry if this is a little OT . I am using (when I have free time) a Win98SE (italian language) PC P3 256M RAM, bought in year 2000, and trying to fix some problems there. On that PC I have also a Win98SE working copy on D: partition, available only through a customized boot floppy (thank you Cannie for the your suggested methods!). This copy is functioning only for restore pourpose of the main Win98SE present on C: partition, from some backups I have made in the past times . I think only after a few months I'll start working on the other PC, a PC P4 512M RAM i915. This PC P4 carries WinXP SP2 installed on C: FAT32 partition of a sata HD with 2 other FAT32 and 1 NTFS partitions available, a sata CD RW and USB 2.0 ports. When I will have free spare time (I dont know when. Always happens only at night hours, when the rest of my family is sleeping!) I would like to try to run the Win98SE on D: partition of that HD, without losing WinXP (hoping not to ruin the entire installation, for me this is only an experiment! ). In order to leave unchanged the installation of xp and not to touch its MBR and so on (I'm a very illetterate PC user, but I have read a lot of things on this beautiful forum), I dont know if is possible, maybe I'm saying something really stupid, excuse me but my idea is... : 1) create a Win98SE boot CD using the Win98 PC P3 (I think that's easy); 2) copy on partition D: (of the PC P4 HD) all Win98SE files (excerpt the same boot files used for the boot CD) coming from the Win98SE installation of P3 HD, using WinXP present on that PC P4 (easy part); 3) hide the WinXP partition C: (I never tried this!); 4) boot (only in safe mode) Win98Se using the boot CD (created by the PC P3) . 5) update all drivers (video, audio, chipset. The difficult part!). ... or, instead, I will have a nice system crash! .
  20. Hello Rjecina. - About the original video driver for Intel 915 GPU - The provided link for the video driver (www.download3k.com/Install-Gigabyte-Intel-VGA-865-915-945-Driver-Beta.html) is only partially useful, because point to a corrupted download link (too old link? ). Alternatively, I searched on the net and downloaded the video driver from another site (www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/5617/), which shows the same description of the previous provided site. On both pages there is also a reference to OS support: Win98, Me, 2000, XP; but, unfortunately, the video driver in download section is for WinXP 64-bit instead (Intel VGA (865/915/945) Driver v 6.14.10.4322 Beta for Windows XP 64 bit, link: download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_vga_intel_xp64.exe - Perhaps is a wrong link or instead a wrong description in that site?). As previously also stated by dencorso, I believe that there is no original video drivers for win98. Thank you for your kind interest and to All Members here who keeps win98SE great and alive! -- I41Mar
  21. A question (if I have understood all right): There is a Win9x original video driver also for Intel 915 GPU (Bearwindows driver apart!)? Another question (more general): If I try an Win98 installation on my new (second hand) PC P4 516M Ram with I915 GPU with an older version of Intel video driver (example: for I865), can I damage the video card (higher GPU temperatures, or other problems)? By I41Mar.
  22. Hi Tihiy, I would install your beautiful RP 9.6.3, but my antivirus program (Avira V7) detect the file SHL8.DLL as infected by the trojan 'TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen' (also for RP 9.6.1, the same file seems infected). Is a false positive or is a real infected file? I am a bit disoriented! At the moment I will stick with RP 9.10. That's a very very good software for my Win98SE computer. Excuse me for my bad english. Thank you for your great programming efforts and your wonderful software! Goodby I41Mar.
  23. Hello! I am not a really experienced Win98SE user, and I am a newbie on this forum. I use windows98SE because I can do all I need: - play some old dos games (I love retrogaming), - play small clips, vids and music, - edit and view office documents, - edit images, - transfer files by usb ports, - do simple and fast backup and restore of the entire system (thank you cannie!), and because I like simpler things (new windows systems appears so complicated and bloated for my needs, ... but time passes and I have got also a XPSP2 laptop). My system (PIII, 700 Mghz, 256Mb ram) is almost fast and stable whith italian USP2.1c_v3, NUSB3.3 and RP9 (thank you Maximus Decim, Alper, Max, Xeno86 and Tihiy!). P.S. This is my first post on this beautiful forum! Best regards. I41Mar
