  1. To msfntor Two years ago I had the same eye problems (only on one eye) and I went to an eye doctor (a very good doctor, also cheap, now retired! - unfortunately where I live there are many expensive and not very good eye doctors). My problems were: - Bright flashes. The bright flashes (bright semiarchs) were caused by a vitreous humor that pulled the retina when the eye moved (mechanical forces exerted by the vitreous humor on the retina which begins to no longer adhere), these flashes were visible even with closed eyes and also in the dark. The eye doctor explained to me that they were caused by the vitreous humor drying out (shrinked humor volume). - Dark spots. I also observed some dark spots that move when I was moving my eyes, floaters ('miodesopsie' in italian - protein fibers that have broken). The eye doctor explained to me that they were caused by vitreous humor aging. The retina was fine fortunately! The problem solution was: drink water often in order to hydrate the vitreous humor and take an eye supplement (based on Potassium, Magnesium, C and E Vitamin, Amino acids and Red Vine extract (antioxidant)) in order to re-integrate the vitreous humor protein matrix. I have been taking the eye supplement for many months and I slowly solved my eye problems (in Italy I purchased a product called 'Vitreolisina Idro' that the doctor suggested I should take). Stays well and Happy New Year to everyone! I41Mar
  2. I don't know why in my Win XP SP2 system Sumatra PDF V3.3.0 compiled by user57 gives me an error only when I try to open the .jxr file (for me, however, this is not really a problem and the program is fine and very useful - thank you user57). For the sake of completeness I provide a screenshot of the error. I just wanted to use the program and to possibly give my (limited) contribution. Maybe the error message depends on my very outdated Win XP SP2 system. Best regards from Italy. I41Mar
  3. To user57. Your wish is my command..., Sir On my old laptop with Dothan processor PC (SSE2 support), OS: WinXP SP2 32 bit system, your compiled SumatraPDF program version 3.3.0 can open the provided *.jpg, *.png, *.jpf, BUT NOT the *.jxr file (image_2021_08_09T10_36_46_079Z*.* files come from your 'jpgtests.zip' downloaded archive) On a Win 10 64 bit system, instead, your compiled SumatraPDF program version 3.3.0 can open all the provided *.jpg, *.png, *.jpf, *.jxr files (image_2021_08_09T10_36_46_079Z*.* files come from your 'jpgtests.zip' downloaded archive). Thank you kindly, Sir. I41Mar
  4. To user57. on my old laptop with Dothan processor PC (SSE2 support), OS: WinXP SP2 32 bit system: the program runs OK (in my limited performed test), the title of the files are displayed, the toolbar is dislplayed also, I can also edit and save annotations, but only when I try to open the provided jpeg XR format file, SumatraPDF shows the following error message 'error loading .../jxr_jpeg_test.jxr'. The version of your compiled program appears 3.3. In a Win 10 64 bit system, instead, your compiled program can open the provided jpeg XR format file (jxr_jpeg_test.jxr). Thank you very much! I41Mar
  5. Hello everybody I apologize for my laziness, but better late than never ... (I have little free time available, unfortunately). I have known MSFN forum for many years and I visit it often, I find it very useful and full of informations about legacy OS. I was interested in using Win98SE in the past, but now I am more interested in using an old laptop with WinXP SP2 (no internet use); I also rarely use another Win 7 laptop and recently a Win 10 laptop for my daughter's school commitments. I hope I can continue to use newer programs in older operating systems. Cordial greetings from south Italy (now we suffer from the summer heat). I41Mar
  6. To user57. on my old laptop with Dothan processor PC (SSE2 support), OS: WinXP SP2 system, the title of the files are displayed, the toolbar is dislplayed also. The version of your compiled program appears 3.2.1. SumatraPDF Version 3.3 was released on July 6th, could you kindly release a similar version compatible with WinXP (SP2)? Thank you for your time and for your commitment. I41Mar
  7. To Aviator. Thank you for your attentions and informations about running BestFitDemo program in a WinXP SP2 system. Unfortunately I can' find the One-Core-Api extension binaries (disappeared web site) and Extended XP downloads (disappeared also). Bacause I do not have good computer skills, can you kindly post for example the BestFitDemo.exe.manifest and the 'SP3 registry trick' and, if you want, send me via e-mail these files (One-Core-Api, Extended XP and WindowsXP-KB3126593-v3-x86-ENU.exe)? My e-mail is 'my msfn name' @ gmail com. Thank you very much. I41Mar
  8. I introduce myself (better late than never). Some years ago (2010) I met your beautiful and interesting site looking for information to solve problems related to my Win98SE PC. After two years, a notebook with WinXPSP2 become my most used PC (no internet connection), while up to now I surf the web using my wife's Win7 netbook. My computing needs are related to mathematics, geometry, image editing and I use Office 2000 for document editing. In my free time I am interested in motorsport (F1) and editing (hex editing, only for fun) an ancient F1 simulation dos game. Unfortunately I do not have any programming skills and I consider myself a novice about computer science. Greetings from Italy. I41mar
  9. I really appreciate your commitment to making programs WinXP compatible. Sorry if it can be considered O.T. I am interested in geometry programs and I have found the 'Best fit' program on the CodeProject site, least-squares best-fitting of circle and rotated ellipse by Alasdair Craig. www.codeproject.com/Articles/692787/Best-fitting-line-circle-and-ellipse github.com/acraig5075/best-fit-demo github.com/acraig5075/best-fit github.com/acraig5075/test-points The program is under the Code Project Open License (CPOL) www.codeproject.com/info/cpol10.aspx Unfortunately, the program (demo-app.zip) only runs on Win7SP1 with Universal-C-Runtime installed (Win7SP1 KB2999226) and inside the zip file there are the BestFitDemo.exe, mfc140.dll, msvcp140.dll, vcruntime140.dll! Is there anyone kindly willing to try to compile the 'Best fit' program so that it has fewer dependencies and can run on a WinXPSP2 or Win2000SP4 OS? I asked the developer if he could do it, but unfortunately I did not get any answer! Thank you very much. Best wishes for your efforts and results. I41Mar
  10. Sorry about the long delay for an useful update (my laziness!). I want to share some observations after almost three years of further PC use, a PC laptop built in the 2006 year with OS WinXP SP2. The short story is this: 3 years ago I had to stay for work far from home for a few days and I thought I wanted to carry my PC to be used during the free time; but I had fear of damaging it during a long train journey (6 hours) when using it on the train trip (vibrations, oscillations and bumps). My great fear of making some PC damage has prevailed, and as precautionary measure in the end I had not used it during the outward journey and during the return journey done after a few days; during the days that I have spent far from home I used my PC only when I had some free time, positioned stably on a table in the hotel room in the evenings. During those days, a few times I noticed a 'clicking' noise emitted by the PC (never happened before!). When after a few days I returned home I reviewed the S.M.A.R.T. HD data and I noticed that the 'Reallocation Event Count' parameter has increased from 1 to 2. After further days of PC use at home the 'clicking' noise has happened more repeatedly and the HD S.M.A.R.T. data showed the increase of 'Reallocation Event Count' parameter from 2 to 3. Meanwhile the 'Current Pending Sector Count' and the 'Offline Uncorrectable Sector Count' HD S.M.A.R.T. parameters have been always zero. I thought then that the HD (60 GB PATA Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 HD, according to Everest report) was about to fail and I quickly bought a new 80 GB PATA HD as a replacement part (but not replaced yet!). After the last 'Reallocation Event Count' increase to 3, the 'clicking' noise disappeared and I continued to use my PC until now (after about 3 years!), to my great surprise without any problem! For clarity my precautionary measures at home are these: the PC is put in a cabinet drawer at home; before turning on the PC I put it stably on a table and then I turn it on, and when it is off I wait for 10-20 seconds before taking it and put it back in the cabinet drawer. I have a believing that HD actually was only partially damaged during the trip (by vibrations, oscillations and bumps), even though the PC was turned off. Best regards to all MSFN friends and thank you for your kind answers. I41Mar
  11. Perhaps it can be useful with regard to the sound issue: in the discussion http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/157438-win98-via-ac97/ maximus-decim at post#7 said ''Last version Realtek WDM driver worked with Windows 98SE - 4.04 On a site of Realtek the file version is stored - 4.06 - this driver with windows 98se does NOT work!'' 12. Dear friends please, I would like to know, if you can help, where can I download the software packages that contain these codecs. Thank you and Happy Easter. I41Mar
  13. My PC are: - desktop PC PIII 700MHz 512 MB RAM (year 2000, now less used) with Win98SE for gaming, dos programs and 16-bit programs use, not internet connected - laptop PC Pentium M 1.6GHz 512 MB RAM (2006 year, now used daily) with WinXPSP2 for office use, cd-dvd, play video clips, general image editing, not internet connected (not updated in order to avoid incompatibility with some 16-bit programs and some dos games and programs) - netbook 1.6GHz 1GB RAM (2010 year, used for internet browsing) with Win7 connected by a mobile internet key. In my early years of computing experience (2000-2007), I had two chances of being infected by a autorun virus coming from a usb key on Win98SE PC that behaved like an antivirus itself, because the virus was looking for some WinXP services and then it was easly removed. In more recent years (last 6 years), increasing my user experience (but I'm not really an expert), I have not had any virus infection by any media, using some common sense (safe site surfing, preferably installing portable software downloaded from trusted sites, scanning everything; only after I decide to transfer the downloaded files to the other older PCs. If I need to transfer some my files to an untrusted PC using my usb key, I will write protect it before the transfer operation). For the next few years I plan to buy a used laptop with Win 7 with at least 4Gb RAM and to run Win98SE and WinXPSP2 in virtual environment only, hoping to benefit from the great electric power consumption improvements of the latest laptop PC and avoiding the old PC maintenance costs for the aging components. In this regard, I am really impressed by the last generation notebook (i5-i7), that usually consumes only 10-25 Watts of electrical power against the 150-250 Watts of a desktop PC (moderate use, not in idle state, and EXCLUDING the monitor electrical power consumption). I have already improved the old notebook PC Pentium M WinXP power consumption and CPU cooling using the RMClock utility. Regards. I41Mar
  14. As a viable alternative to Process Explorer there is Nirsoft CurrProcess v1.13, a freeware Process Viewer downloadable at www.nirsoft.net/utils/cprocess.html A newer version of WordTabs V3.30 is downloadable at https://web.archive.org/web/20060517135635/http://omega5.port5.com/files/2004/wordtabs/wt330.zip and some WordTabs V3.30 additional info are at www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/wordtabs-v-3-30-location-t1969791.html I41Mar
  15. Sometimes I need to perform measurements on digital images (distances, angles, bending radius, mouse trip). Here I want to share with you some small freeware tools, very useful in my opinion, for simple geometric measurements without having to install huge design programs, and a color capture program.
