  1. update so with kenrel ex installed any version of compatibility before 2k does the same thing if set compatibly to 2k it brings up update home but, seems to be stalling and if i set it to xp it brings a knowledge base about the os being to old to use windows updates. also the problem doesn't exist because of kernel ex because i didn't install kernel ex until after experiencing the problem.
  2. so it ran out of updates after 30 some. it could be it's just not possible to get updates from ms any more in witch case were screwed cause those unoffical services packs are less than worthless.
  3. This only gets me so far one of the updates failed with a 404 error, not sure if this will prevent further updates.
  4. So i installed ie6 sp1 and tried updates and it did the same thing it was doing in ie 5. it reloads the updates page non stop at lighting speed cycling between the pages so fast it can't actually do any thing, just cycling between urls witch is the windows update home page.
  5. i was thinking more along the line of it just having problems addressing blocks after a certain size, everything worked fine before i chkdisk and defragglered it. i know for a fact it worked with 40gb or 11gb ext3 file system at the end where it usually fails. see where i'm going here. instead of jumping straight to a conclusion lets think every possible out come first. maybe i should just dual boot, it would give me a chance to see if grub can fix the problem if it does show up again at all with a second file system occupying the second part of the drive and gives me a chance for a better or lighter os for such old hardware. and if things do act up then possibly it could be a south bridge if my laptop even has one and i could run advanced tested and if thy fails the same i could try a proper reflow on my south bridge and see if that helps.
  6. but, the games take 40gb alone. why would both drives fail exactly the same way with the same clusters? i ran short test on my hitachi with the hitachi drive tooks and it came up clean might have to try it again with the advanced test but, i'm not gonna just write it off as fail drives tha'd be ignorant.
  7. yeah, yeah, i know you've seen it before. i managed to install 98se to my 100gb with dual boot of xubuntu now i want to go full on windows 98se. wit both my Hitachi 100gb and my WD 120gb ide they both fail the surface scan at the same spot towards the end then i leave a weight on the F key and it "fixes" so many errors it gives up and installs any ways and when it does it's like it can't find the mbr. i also tried with a 10gb partition at the front of the drive, same thing. does 100gb count ans that special large hard disk install that require special steps?
  8. so there can't be free open source software. i figured since xp had it built nin the os and 98se didn't it was just matter of getting something that connect to the ip of said net work.
  9. sorry if i miss communicating but, i meant software for identifying and connecting to networks. i know the card works because it chugged along with xubuntu for a while.
  10. on my personal 98se machine i use the official Microsoft software because i have a Microsoft wifi card. Assuming the wifi card drive i found is legit i was looking for wifi software for a non Microsoft wifi adapter. i have a dell truemoble 1300 installed internally i think i i may have found a driver. I think xp let alone tiny xp is too much for this machine at least with anit virus. xp i more prone to viruses than 98 for that fact that it's more common.
  11. Are these the last 9X compatible versions, or were they the current versions at the time of this posting? I initially downloaded version 3.1.15.0 and this threw an Access Violation Exception during installation. However, I then figured the download URL for version 3.1.9.0 and installed this. During installation, it offered to download and update to version 3.1.15.0, which I accepted. So now version 3.1.15.0 is installed successfully. Perhaps if I didn't accept the update offer, and installed the previously-downloaded version 3.1.15.0 on top of version 3.1.9.0, this may also have been successful. A word of warning: According to Avast, the optional "Ask toolbar" that comes with version 3.1.9.0 is infected by a Trojan or Virus or whatever. I had deselected this optional install anyway, but this seemed to put Avast into an infinite loop when I selected the "Delete" option, so I eventually had to tell Avast to take no action (the Trillion installation was progressing a bit at a time, but I lost patience with the recurring pop-up warning from Avast). As for Trillian Astra v4.0.0.78, I couldn't find a copy of this anywhere (I presume this is also known as Trillian Astra Alpha Build 78), nor any version close to this. Joe. i tried trillian not long ago maybe several months ago it was horrid and barley ran and the gfx were garbled up and it couldn't connect online. this is with kernel ex
  12. Then you should volunteer to be a KernelEx developer. Xeno86 has just asked for help. I'd be very glad if you accepted. The only problem is official build aren't optimized for older CPUs like palemoon and have massive memory leaks witch palemoon trys to address. I hear FF7 has the leaks fixed though. I saw an article benching all the browsers and FF and opera used over 100mb ram and IE not far behind but, chrome was using 30mb ram. I wanna see chrome ported over too 98se and kernel ex. or if kernel ex could run chrome that would be cool too.
  13. Holy heck i'm floored i didn't think any of the outdated A/Vs could get updates i had thought of getting an older yet some what recent A/v but, never really put any more thought to it. i use WOT in palemoon witch i have version specialized for Pentium 3's and if you don't know palemoon is windows optimized version of FF. any i didn't think there was anything left for 98se might be interesting to scan it some time but, for the most part i don't have or run any thing as far as A/v i'm sure it helps with performance some.
  14. yeah it Fs up for me too, i really wanted/needed it, i really want trilian.
  15. wow i really had to do some skimming why not set it up on a 512 stick then modded with the ram patch and install the 2gb later, god do i had the unofficial service pack, it never works i just get patches online from ms. the unofficial service pack does weird things to the system and i have sneaking suspension it's for fully patched 98se via official updates then unofficial but, it p***ed me so i don't even bother.
  16. I don't think I'll even dignify that troll mess with more than this message. You quite clearly are set in your ways.
  17. they will have future releases and when then do switch over to it. PM is a little less resource hungry. i hav 100mhz bus 384mb maxed and geforce 2 go and a 899mhz pentium 3.... laptop and i can run palemoon with chatzilla and handful of addons minimized AND the play a game. no need to set compat mode with kernel ex it seems to work find by default. sorry to stray off topic I'm not sure if they will ever have an old cpu optimized version of FF4 but, i'm fairly sure they will make windows optimized version of FF4 before long.
  18. If your using 98 on older hard ware PLEASE PLEASE give this look i promise it's not spam i use it all the time cause the have version built for and optimized for older cpus including the the pentium 3 and 4 and athlon xp. http://www.palemoon.org/ do me a favor and give the very first paragraph right there on the main page a read.
  19. i have dug through this thread couple of times, does any know of program that is like trillian OTHER THAN the crappy Miranda im?
  20. See this thread: yeah i know, no luck. and whats up with having to mod it?
  21. wait we can run 10.2 on kernel ex, sweet!!!! never has any need for shock wave yet. java on the other had is worthless and would be nice to have working, any one have any version working?
  22. It's just the opposite for me i want it to view as web page i like the the section to the left as it can display thumb nails of images. every fold i go into i have to check view as web page.
  23. I tried 8u8 firefox acted like there was nothing at all and told me i need to dl java, i'm trying 6u24 now. even if it doesn't work on FF i'm gonna see if it is good enough to run this java psp emulator. EDIT well nothing on emu, runescape tries to load up atleast it doesn't prompt me to install java instead it sits there and these blank java dos windows open up.
  24. Win 98 Now b... DING!
  25. well i know you can sync on the ipod with dopisp by mgtek but, i'm not sure if 98 can run wmp 10 i think you have to install a 3rd party patch to run wmp 10 on 98.
