  1. well it's been a while since i've done this, perhaps this time i can figure how to check and uncheck the various options. is this the most update to date SP or are there still others?
  2. i thought a i saw post here with some basic dual core functionality.
  3. Avast 4.8 (if you download the pro trial edition and give it a free/home registration key, it turns into the free/home edition). ZoneAlarm 5.5.094.000 or 4.5.594.000. Joe. can it still download new databases? i run sans anti virus ans use ad block plus and am careful where i go online.
  4. Norton ghost runs in dos and has bootable floppy but, is not free. There are other live boot and bootable software that contain Norton ghost. Norton ghost can also make images and do drive to drive ghosting.
  5. Interesting so that's what has been going on while i was away. last time we has 2 or 3 let alone 5.
  6. I can never get my yahoo to work with any email client it tells me i have to pay money for imap or pop support.
  7. what software are you using to connect to wifi networks?
  8. so the TRL8185 might not work? Also no know "connection" software yet?
  9. aaaww the belkin is for desktops only. So i guess look for "RTL8185" based solutions then. also what software do you use to manage wifi connections. i might guess the windows software will not support a non Microsoft wifi card? EDIT: snagged one on ebay for 3 bucks USD shipped and got some 98se inf drivers.
  10. I have a Microsoft wifi card but, it only supports WEP. I might just lower my security to WEP but, was curious about other laptop wifi cards that have 98 support. does any one they use have one or know of any?
  11. I remember seeing that is there a link to that project. sounds like you successfully got 98 to see and initialize more than one core.
  12. That is absolute poppy cock the Pentium D was 2 Pentium 4 bashed together and shoved in a chip the core 2 quad is gonna be much stronger core to core. Any reasonable man would just grab a single core Conroe... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116039 Basically a Core 2 Solo but, for desktop. Also it depends on what your running a lot of older games/apps don't play nice with newer hardware.
  13. I frequent VOGONS too. For a long while my only laptop was a Pentium 3 900mhz, 384mb ram, GeForce 2 GO 16mb. I had win 98 with all the 3rd addons and KerenelEX. I could must barely play 240p youtube videos. It did game decently i played a American McGees's Alice on medium. At least with desktop you can change or upgrade any aspect.
  14. I've been using palemoon 3 it is optimized for older CPUs specifically. my problem random crashing not sure if that is the unofficial service pack or kernel ex or the browser? EDIT: sounds like the "no script" addon for firefox may help.
  15. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the wine and the song, like the seasons, all have gone.
  16. you may want to try asking on the VOGONS forums those guy are classic computing gurus.
  17. all silver light versions?
  18. you will hate me for saying this, but, have you considered kernel ex and this... http://www.palemoon.org/athlonxp.shtml http://www.palemoon.org/technical.shtml#CPUsupport any who the jest of it is you could go firefox 3 but, not just any firefox, palemoon witch is optimized for windows but, not just any palemoon, version 3 is optimized for older CPUs witch one might be running with windows 98.
  19. Just read through a quite a few pages and WOW have you done a lot of updates and also i see you added some AWESOME optional enhancements. Might have to clean install again just to use this SP.
  20. Figured it out. By formatting the and partitioning the drive my self I indecently missed crucial steps in setup. You see setup when formatting the drive makes it active and installs the proper boot files, HOW EVER when i format manually with my live boot CDs it sees that nice and neat partition and goes "oh i must have already setup the hard drive time for step 2" Thing is the partition programs only partition they don't install the 98SE boot files. So i i erased all the partitions and wrote the changes. I let 98se format the drive to my surprise it didn't come out with some weird size with half the drive showing up. It properly formatted with FAT32 LBA and fully installed TWICE (borked a driver install). when i run my driver installers from Toshiba it ask for extra files upon reboot on some drivers and it sucks cause i have to track down all the files and burn them off to a disk.
  21. possibly i just use part logic it practically does the same thing, atm i wanna try a an experiment and see how 98se setup handles formatting the drive.
  22. yes i set it as active. i know gparted can also make it an mbr part instead of gpt if you tell it to but, it refuses to cooperate with my onboard gfx. the HDD is WD black i don't know what model i'd have to take it out of it's cage to find out.
  23. it started with A: so... A:FDISK /MBR blinking "_" A:C: C: C: FDISK /MBR blinking "_" C:D: D: D: FDISK /MBR blinking "_" D:setup press enter to continue.... EDIT: and same thing, i think there is more to it than FDISK /MBR I think if i could get stupid gparted to run i could setup an MBR.
  24. http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=1073833652&rpn=PS287U&modelFilter=2805-S503&selCategory=2756709&selFamily=1073768663 it is Toshiba 2805-s503 i'm trying to use a 120gb ide drive. I have been running 98se for longest time on it. any who i have 120gb ide hdd in it and after the final boot in install (where it stops running off the cd and starts running off the hdd) it acts like nothing is there. it just sits there blinking "_" like the hdd is empty. i've been through this a million times and very familiar with partitioning. i've tried a smaller part for the os only and what not double checked it was fat32 LBA blah blah. my next step i guess is to try and get grub to find the needed files to make it boot. i've double checked it does indeed install files to the drive. the s***ty part is that i did get it to work but, had forgotten to wipe the drive and so my root was full of all kinds of random stuff and the drive name was "WD passport" (portable hdd), so i launched part logic and cleared it out, and now it refuses to finish installing. is there a file i manually load to kick start it? is it the file system i set up part logic/g parted? do i need to make it raw and let 98se installer partition/format it? I'm using a later installer that doesn't need that dumb boot floppy it's all stream lined so to speak. Also before i ended up needing to reinstall i used to dual boot with linux with grub but, as i said before it installed to the FULL drive as it was with all the crap on it. not to confuse you it is a different hdd than the one i dual booted on but, is of the same size and physically fit and also ide.
