installing to 110gb partition, couldn't find good info
cdoublejj replied to cdoublejj's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Linux will "see" all partitions on your disk whether they are hidden or not. As far as I know, the location of the swap partition does not matter. I know someone is going to disagree with this or say it's the "wrong" way, , but it is also possible to create a swap file instead of a swap partition if one so desires. I have a swap partition for my Linux on this machine, but I have started using a swap file on other systems I set up. i see. some one on the ubuntu forums suggested i install 98 on a small drive then mirror it on to my big drive. EDIT: am looking through this atm, wow some good info i missed. scary stuff about corrupting your other partitions. well looky there it supports dual layer dvd thats good cause i plan on installing one.I plan on upgrading this laptop to the max. if i install the large hhd support driver will windows updates mess up or mess up the new large hdd driver? in short will it conflict with official updates? did some reading today the drive is apparently only really 298gb i could have swore i had more my first several times partitioning it. i used partition logic on the laptop it's going on then in a tower both max it at 298 man i could have really used that 22gb. maybe the bios just sees it wierd since it's only like 10gb off seeing as it was 275gb or so free plus ubuntu plus the swap about 280gb. -

i installed just ubuntu on the entire drive and it maxed at 275.5gb free space. i had an idea of using hidden partitions maybe it would make the installers use one partition ie the windows partition then i could redo the hidden partitions in fat32. also think i'm gonna try manually partitioning it again but with the linux right next to the 98 partition does the swap need to be before or after the linux partition? -

woke this morning with some squash errors from ubuntu install, restarted and got grub error 18. this is after selecting the whole drive for install. i should note the installer game me the option to dual boot but, it wanted to resize one of m storage partitions, the one next to the windows install. -

yeah, i've seen it kernel ex then the one mod that makes it look like xp. also i saw wmp9 and i think even mod for wmp11!!! 98 beats out dos box specially on games like shadow warrior or blood. this machine is 900 mhz maybe 1ghz if i snag this cpu off ebay. 384mb ram maxed a 16mb geforce 2 go witch is nice earlier toshiba 2805 series do crummy job and screen stretching so this one does decent job the s202 for example letter boxes smaller resolutions or if you want have do screen stretch but, it's so blotchy and i think it is becasue of the crummy savage video chip. specs seems the s202 version I have worked with doesn't have as nice udma support if you check out the hdd specs s202 so far it looks like my install is hanging at 100 prepare for install after the disk formatting so i'm restarting. -

alrighty we might just find out pretty soon i'm half way with 98 install if it finishes i can install the driver for it once i get a chance at ubuntu if it fails like the rest i'll straight install ubuntu and see if it caps out. i like this forum you guys have provided insightful info and don't give me crap for liking 98 i'll keep this thread posted. if it does have large drive support can i install ubuntu next to 98 then re-size ubuntu and make more partitions just asking not saying it's an answer. -

one as far as the bios i know with earlier 2805 models there is no bios patch for it and with this one there isn't a bios update that mentions any thing about hdd support after this next go at i think i'll install a straight linux install and see what it caps at i have a toshiba 2805 s503 i just did an s202 for a friend with a 160 and ubuntu and it capped at 137 this is later model with extra goodies maybe it has large disk support. i have been doing manual partition i wasn't aware okay i did do it once on dell with 2 physical drives that linux didn't have to be on the same partition or drive as windows. last time i put the linux partition at the back of the drive so to speak and i got grub error 17 tried it again then tried again grub error 18. -

It does not matter what size the partition you create for 98 or any other OS is, a hard disk larger than 137GB will eventually be corrupted unless you have a patched driver for your Windows 98 install. okay i can understand that. i'd really like to know how do i mod my installer with the patched driver wich i assume makes the check disk go away when i introduce it to a big fat32 partition. maybe i will need a boot loader or if i go 98/linux/swap/storage/storage -

thats what i wanted to hear about the drivers. when you install ubuntu and xp it down sizes the xp partitions. well i know i want 100 gig to ubuntu and that i want it on the same partition as windows for dual boot, there for!!! the Windows 98 partition must be 110gb so fresh install of widnwos98 then an install of ubuntu resizing the win98 to a safe 10gb. when you partition they show as different drives the fat32 is for storage other than the on housing 98. windows98 linux storage storage it worked the first in98 but ubuntu didn't work after install it owuld have been the same picture but, with swap and linux at the end and a smaller win98 partition. -
installing to 110gb partition, couldn't find good info

i've done that i installed it first. my first time i created all the partitions eve swap ext3 but alas the bios must not have read the boot sector on the last partition as grub couldn't run. i've been doing a lot of partitioning and formatting. -
i'm trying to install 98se to a 110gb partition so i can dual boot with ubuntu. when i tried making multiple partitions manually for ubutnu putting it on separate partition i got grub boot errors. the problem i am having every time i try to install 98 it forces me to scandisk it then i have to hit space bar to fix every error i thinks it finds wich im possible to press it 2 million times. now if format in a non 98 format and tell it to format in lba it keeps asking for a boot disc i burned one off but, still kept asking for it. if i do it in non lba it only saw 2 gigs in 98 and when i whent to install ubuntu it was a giant hard drive no partitions. i did try making 3 fat 32s 1 for 98 and then swap and linux partition but, the i got grub errors 17 and 18. any ideas? the problem is that bios a cap of 130gb for each drive or in this case partition. it's 320gb WD blue Scorpio.

will this make me use more ram?
-
I have had my console emulators ie sega and n64 run faster on wine over wifi from another computer hard drive than linux could run Nativly.

SON OF.... man i bet it's that symantec A-hole guy's fault. [no not really] avast is nice and it sucks that it won't support 98 couldn't you just update the database and not the program it's self?

good news i found me some errors now i don't have to worry about picking at my machine for the prob, I just need to digg through my pile of ram and test her again and make sure she is stable. the asus k7v can't overclock worth poop from the reviews i read a long time ago i tried OCing ita few mhz through the bus like 5 or 7 mhz and it wouldn't even post. i've been switching out a lot of sticks still getting errors i think my middle ram slot is damage using the other 2 only still gave me 1 error wich is ticking me off it seems like anything over 2 128's in my 2 outer slots gives errors it's crummy mobo any ways. EDIT AGAIN: fixed it with with a good 9 hour no error memtest and 10 hours of prime 95 runs real smooth now ANOTHER EDIT:well it is STILL crashing i only have 2 cards installed, maybe bad caps on the mobo? almost worth another slot a mobo and fresh install but i'm wee bit poor right now.
-
oh sorry asus k7v 700mhz slot a amd 384mb ram cheapy and random sticks 15 gig hdd ati 7500 Turtle Beach Vortex AU8820B2 does it matter if i have an odd amount of ram like 256mb a 128mb and a 16mb or does it not matter as long as it is under 512mb
-
just lock ups no response what so ever and it is not app specific i was messing around with the sound drive i clicked the dos driver wich ran before windows started the next boot but also did a manual drive install at the same time pointing to the same files i was messing with personally i don't think it is the sound drive it seems to work fine but i will pull the sound card and see if that is. i was thinkingthat 64mb of pointer space might have been the problem i too much ram or what ever so i'm glad it's not that.
-
98se randomly crashes for me i was wonder if it because i have 300 and some odd mb of ram or when i install i chose the option for big drives but didn't have special floppy so i just continued the install any ways. the drive i used for my sound card is dos based is that it?

so i'm building a machine for older games but i want to run mid 90's to early 2000 games like cnc renegade or what ever here is the deal i have over 512mbram and i read 98se buggs out but since you have all these mods and service packs will 98se run fin with 6xx MB of ram and what about this kernal 4.0 how does it run? or would i better off with ME does it run dos game like 98 does ME has the ui tweaker or is there a way to do that to 98se i assume ui tweaker lets you change the visual style? windows nt4 and 2000 have does problems because i read about 3dreams build engine type games not running and you have to jump threw hoops to get old games like that to run. so i'm thinking 98se or ME if they deal with the ram wich one and wich mods andservice packs should i use that kernal 4.0 sounds cool if it runs well and doesn't crash the OS. the machine i have is a Slot A asus mobo with 700 mhz cpu and sound blaster audigy and an agp card a nvidia 15 gb hdd since I Couldn't freaking find my 20gb [i have too much PC crap/parts] oh btw way i knew 95 only does 16 bit after trying the expansion pack for cnc tiberian but doesn't 98 support 32 bit programs as well?
