  1. so basically the 98se install doesn't finish after initial reboot EDIT: no it's not booting off the hdd after final reboot from the install.
  2. well i've finally come back to this project again. it seems to me the only reason it worked before was because grub took care of the boot process.
  3. Happy new years
  4. do not use windiz it's old and broken check the thread link given above there are mention of some decent unofficial service packs.
  5. ^THIS^
  6. Uh Athlon XP with 98 IS NOT POSSIBLE because, it would be so fast it would rip the space time continuum.
  7. opera pale moon a ton of games
  8. i don't think linux can run run the same programs as windows and the freeware kock offs stink and wine is a joke. 98 and 95 are very very easy to get hold legit or not. i know at work we have PCs like that just laying around. i'm sure such COAs can be bought for cheap or even free.
  9. unless you could check and uncheck all the updates and programs.
  10. Thanks that makes a bit more since to me now. I know updates stopped in 06 so i'm guessing they both fix and add ton of stuff, soporific's made my head spin there was so much stuff added and patched.
  11. As per the mod's clsing "MDGx's 98SE2ME is not a "service pack" type of project. That's why it is categorized under "Enhancements, Replacements + Transformation Packs". XP files are sometimes included in these packages because they have been found to work in 98SE, and are more updated than its ME equivalent if there is one. These questions should go in the 98 SE SP 3.0 BETA 4 thread. I think we should start moving the discussion over there since most of this is about Gape's/PROBLEMCHYLD's Service Pack. " what about sporific's? what about summary of each of these major SPs. is "98 SE SP 3.0 BETA 4" anything like sporifici's?
  12. well sporific's locked up but, then after reboot started working fine, it didn't occur to me that i should have patched the patcher with the 50 meg 2008 file. EDIT, clean installed gonna try it again just in case. EDIT: so every thing seemed to go fine a few minor hiccups except for MGDx's wmp 10 patch it just hangs and you have to end task it it manages to copy some files cause wmp mentions needing a newer os cause some file being called demands it. EDIT: i found the restart application setting it combs through some updates over again, seems ie6 and wmp updates are the one giving trouble.
  13. That will be the last full version of Autopatcher, from December 2007. It should be a 286 MB file. However there was a 45 MB update version subsequently released in December 2008, which was the last issued. You need the full version installed before you can apply the update version. ahh i see they never got a around to making a ful version 2008. Link for those wondering about post #42 http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#AP98 EDIT: i see NUSB is just under the updates, i tried a usb drive patch once it never really worked i had to reboot with the drive in and then after removing it would only work if reboot and if i was lucky enough to have the same drive letter assigned, as that drive letter was for ever stuck in my computer and would only work if things were just right. i was using a san disk cruzer. not sure f it was NUSB i used or not. never had the best of luck with usb drives on that machine with 98se.
  14. Post 42 has no url so i google it and it brought me back to mfsn where there was an MGDX mirror where i downloaded AP2007.EXE is this correct? i know ie 6 and dx9 can be DLed with a google search.
  15. See what i'm talking about, how are people supposed to know what is right and wrong, trusted and not trusted and it's all over the place. is there any where with like a list or multiple offerings in one place? at least with custom official batch installer with the official updates you know what your getting. CLEARLY i have some research to do. i really want to find an update pack so i can get proper 98se vm and a few local installs going. EDIT: think i found it... http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html If i remember right I installed it after getting a the first bach of updates through ms, back then it still worked. it borked stuff so bad where a ui button might have said back it had strings of code jutting out of it and kinds of other freaky side affects. I was never sure if they were in place of updates or after updates improving security and such.
  16. what do you mean that fits you? how many can there be?
  17. Which one did you try? it's been so long ago but, i think it was one listed on msfn actually but, it had to been a few years ago. it wasn't beta it was a revised one. all i want are critical and useful updates and dx9. can any suggest these magical unofficial updates or where i can find a trusted one. also if remeber right there were no instruction such what updates you need from Microsoft or to install on a clean copy, nada.
  18. okay some one please explain an unofficial update pack, i tried one and it Fed windows so bad a clean install was in order in just a matter of minutes.
  19. it certainly would, more than likley when some googles the v4 updates bug, the msfn update pack would be among the first google results for those who don't know.
  20. we it's clear for us to use and better support windows 98 our selves we need an update project, with a guide on manual updating and hosting of these updates. sooner or later if people pitch in we could have near all the updates. at that point some one could program up an installer for the updates.
  21. so is 98 truly dead?
  22. that's wonderful news now if they could all be packaged along with the order they need to go in. if that could be done. an unofficial installer might be possible making a mega update pack that installs all the updates, every thing but, drivers.
  23. so might it be possible to make an unofficial official update pack?
  24. i got to thinking about those unofficial service packs, i remember trying one it replaced all the labels on my buttons with strings of code. then again i remember trying the latest SP then i though maybe they need to be installed in order like xp or vista. so are there any known good unofficial SPs we can install to fresh installs of 98se? or is the gooses cooked? i'd like to think it won't go down that easy maybe waybackmachine.org? or some one who knows something can make an update pack or something.
  25. how did i miss this i'm having the same problem So do we have to do each update manual with the down load center or what?
