  1. Hi, spacesurfer, long time no see... ...once again good work. For the record, it appears that BCD appears to be a hive file, i.e. a binary Registry file. jaclaz
  2. In a nutshell: 1) The "No-emulation" mode saves on CD a 2048 bytes bootsector that directly loads (in the case of a Windows 2K/XP/2003) the SETUPLDR.BIN, this particular bootsector is often referred as "Microsoft Corporation.img" or as "Arnes Boot Record.img" 2) The "El-Torito" emulation mode saves on CD an image of a (either 1.44 or 2.88 Mb) floppy disk, which is booted (usually getting drive letter "B :") just as a floppy would, of course the floppy needs to be bootable 3) There is even a third, less known and scarcely used, HD emulation possible for bootable CD's, basically an image of the HD is stored on the CD jaclaz
  3. Yes, of course unless you remove the feature with nlite. Well, no, there is also a FULLY detailed guide using WINNT.EXE, besides some more experimental methods, start from here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=82856 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=81788&st=6 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=61384&st=0 jaclaz
  4. It seems to me quite strange, I mean if it does work with WIN98, and you followed the same procedure for WINME it should work with the latter also, there are no real differences between the setup routine of the two, you could try using a different VM, like QEMU/QEMUMANAGER: http://www.davereyn.co.uk/ or VirtualBox: http://www.virtualbox.org/ It could be "something" between VMware and WINME.... jaclaz
  5. Yep, and there are only two things you can do with your girlfriend while the system is defragging/scanning/cleaning and it is raining outside, and I guess you hate watching TV.... jaclaz
  6. Some related info: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?...ic=1123&hl= jaclaz
  7. @cdob VERY interesting! Any idea for the reason for the "loong" wait? About the migrate.inf setting, I remember having started (and not actually finished as most of my projects ) looking into the data written into MountedDevices keys, I am pretty confident that a batch that can automate the creation of it can be made. about: since the .inf only contains one "directive", cannot it be eliminated changing the line to: HKLM,"SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\StorageDevicePolicies","WriteProtect",0x10001,1 ? jaclaz
  8. If you have a problem with "wrong" partition entries, your best bet is TESTDISK: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk Do NOT format the drive before using it. Also, read this: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=84345 for a general "howto" for approaching the problem. jaclaz

    VMWare

Well, don't take this as an offence (it is not intended to) , but VMware is a pretty straightforward piece of software and it is well documented in the manual. http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/ws_pubs.html Or you need specific help? jaclaz
  10. Well, as I see it, having a bootable Linux system is to be considered as "cheating" , the general idea is not to use "other" means, otherwise we already have the working "install from USB in ten steps" (limited to FAT16 and FAT32, but one can use the "convert.exe" utility later) here: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16713 However, if you have a way to copy the files to the hard disk (after having formatted it), you can use Grub4dos as an entry in boot.ini to directly load a setupldr.bin, this way your setup will be portable. Moreover, you should be able to exchange hd0 with hd1, so that even if you booted from USB, the internal hard disk will be C : nonetheless. If you need some help with grub4dos, here is the whereto: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=14 Search on the 911cd foru for "grub4dos" you'll find several infos. jaclaz
  11. Warning, there's another barrier, too, known as the dreaded 32 GB limit, with pre-2001 PCs. Yep, that is the one I pointed to: jaclaz
  12. If it worked with a 12 Gb HD, it cannot be the infamous 8 Gb barrier, nor Win9x specific ones since it is XP.... ...the only possible "hard disk barrier" that could be involved should be the: (search for the quoted text above on this page: http://www.dewassoc.com/kbase/hard_drives/...ze_barriers.htm ) That should be resolvable through a BIOS update. jaclaz
  13. I am not an expert in this, but judging from the number of posts you can find by googling "mup.sys" it must be one of the most common errors that happen. I cannot find a definite answer, it seems like that right after mup.sys a service or device driver fails to load, and this service or driver can be almost anything. I suspect that it is something related with timing of plug'n play or something like it, but it can be virtually anything. Here are a couple of threads that appear to be informative: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=72146 http://www.cyberiapc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5288 jaclaz
  14. Quite strange. You should have a look (while in safe mode) if there is any device with problems and if there is any event registered in the event log. Next attempt would be to modify boot.ini to add an entry booting with LOGging enabled, try to boot normally, then reboot once stuck in safe mode and examine the log. jaclaz
  15. Mister Brian, you must understand that when booting from CD the setup environments that starts is NOT a full XP, so that many drivers (even those included in the CD) are NOT available. Besides, XP has been designed NOT to be portable. There are workarounds, the two main references are Dietmar thread here: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=14181 (about installing XP on a USB connected stick or disk) a good start point in the thread is this post of ine where I link to the main methods: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...181&st=1988 and SFiorito's ones here on MSFN and on MP3car.com: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=70 http://osf1.gmu.edu/~sfiorito/eXPinstall.htm There are controversial reports about using a CF card connected through a USB adapter, expecially if it is a multi-slot one. You'll have to read and learn quite a bit of info and make several attempts. jaclaz
  16. Yes, of course, but you still need to copy it to a floppy. You can use SCSIMAX software in DOS to detect your SCSI card: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 Though most probably the Win98 device manager already has enough info to let you identfy the card. jaclaz
  17. Does this happen with the old disk still in, or with ONLY the new one connected? If it is the first one, it may be a conflict of the disk signature, or it could well be something related to WPA, is it XP? Your next best bet is to do a REPAIR, along these intructions: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm jaclaz
  18. Something appears to be wrong, copying 8 Gb should take several minutes, not hours. I would try with one of these (FREEWARE): http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html http://www.pcinspector.de/clone-maxx/uk/welcome.htm http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/index.htm jaclaz
  19. Follow DigeratiPrime advice: jaclaz
  20. Cannot say if he removes them, but do have a look at Fred de Vorck's page and to HFSLIP: http://www.vorck.com/remove-ie.html jaclaz
  21. Most probably this is COMPLETELY unrelated , but I found here: http://snoopy81.ifrance.com/snoopy81/en/tools.htm http://snoopy81.ifrance.com/snoopy81/dl_en/money81.inf A modified .inf file to use money99 without Internet Explorer (i.e. on a 98lite install). Is it possible that money99 somehow "calls" something in Explorer or related .dll's that in turn do some "weird" check on defrag.exe or on its Registry entries? jaclaz
  22. http://kurtsh.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!...!1665.entry Yep , though that is for VISTA, not for XP. jaclaz
  23. Maybe a little OT, but I want to share this site I recently found: http://snoopy81.ifrance.com/en/protab.htm that adds some interesting features to "lited" 98 with 95 files, and details an interesting approach to continue using some features of the Win98 shell32.dll using it renamed to Shell32.w98 as some 98lite installs do. jaclaz
  24. @toxic_97 MOST probably it won't work. But rest assured, no software can damage a device, though it may "damage" your windows install. If the question is "is it possible to make USB sticks working in win98 FE ?", the answer is probably yes, but I would guess that since you "don't have the time to read through 13 thread pages", you will have also not enough time to actually try learning and experimenting to (possibly) do it. There is a common replacement for "time" that is called "money", you can find someone and pay him for the time needed to develop such a solution, or I guess it's easier to search on e-bay or wherever for someone selling a Win98SE CD and license. jaclaz
  25. Get latest release of Grub4dos, here: http://grub4dos.jot.com/WikiHome Grub4dos can be used BOTH as a "no-emulation" boot image for CD/DVD and as a MBR on stick. Thus porting the boot menu system between them should be easy. Unfortunately grub4dos documentation is still very lagging, your best bet on having the info you need is to search on the 911CD forum for posts by "jaclaz" (yours truly), "spacesurfer" and "diddy" containing keyword "grub4dos". jaclaz
