  1. El Torito specs http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/specscdrom.pdf Doesn't use a HD-like ZIP fourth partition table entry? Contrary fourth entry may be first entry, partition count may be reversed. BIOS behaviour is unclear. Yep , but writing the 4th entry to 1st one (or if you prefer converting a ZIP-like to HD-like) should be trivial. The "worst" part is that are seemingly TWO ZIP standards, one for a "partitioned drive" with MBR, and one for "superfloppy". (see given reference) WHICH kind are the original ZIP disks we are talking about? Remember that geometry is n/64/32, and this *may* create another possible incompatibility. Maybe, using the "makebootfat" approach one could (still shifting the entry - if actually needed) convert also "superfloppy" ZUP disks to HD-like. OT , but as always not that much, about the DEBUG script, with the obvious exception of the peeps still running 9x systems only, and of those running Vista and later, someone may find this little batch of use: http://www.forensicfocus.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4805 (or the nice little GUI app by pwakely) I simply CANNOT stand DEBUG scripts, they are UNreadable to my eyes. jaclaz
  2. Sure. That was on purpose. We can start a new one around "apodictic" in the sense of "true": http://www.thefreedictionary.com/apodictic as in Bertrand Russell, "the true meaning of the statement" : jaclaz
  3. Good. Now the point is HOW the mirroring was done (meaning if the mirroring just changed "whatever it found" on the source or also wiped the rest of the partiition). You should use one of the two 2 Tb disks to hold two images respectively of disk1 and of disk2, then put the disk1 and disk2 aside for the moment. What program are you using to create the image(s)? Please use any dd-like program (making RAW sector-by-sector images). This is recommended: http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/v3/drdd.htm but you can use any other one, as long as it does RAW sector-by-sector copy. Which OS does your "old" computer run? How were the disk1 and disk2 "filled"? I mean, "filled up to the brim", "lot's of empty space", recently and thoroughfully defragged, etc. I presume (actually I hope) all partitions were NTFS, right? You don't, by any chance have a copy of the MBR of the old disks, don't you? What we may TRY doing is, if by ANY chance, the $MFT's of the two partitions X: and Y: were NOT overwritten, to recover them. You will need to get familiar with the lingo and tools. Please review this thread where a similar (please read as different, but still related) problem was solved: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=145574 so that you have an idea of what we will be looking for and how. jaclaz
  4. It was meant only as a hint that nonsense (absolute or relative) is in the eye of the beholder, like beauty. You see, because you have no time, nor money enough, you think nonsensical that someone with enough time (and still not enough money) may value his time so little that he can spend hours doing his batches. (or, more exactly, whatever he likes, the way he likes ). Another peep with not time but lots of money, may think that even the little time you spend using CCleaner and the like is nonsensical. jaclaz
  5. VERY, VERY, VERY LITTLE. God only knows HOW the heck would chkdsk behave on a setup like yours. In theory (mind you theory only) a "good" program that finds a mirrored drive with contents completely UNLIKE it's mirror would simply re-mirror it. (i.e. you should have your "first"drive intact and an exact copy of it on the second). That wouls probably happen if you had only two disks connected, but you connected 4 of them, right? You seem to report a completely different result (mostly unclear ) How were the disks originally partitioned (let's call them disk1 and disk2)? What happened to the "new" 1 Tb ones (let's call them disk3 and disk4)? jaclaz
  6. JFYI: Basic .IBB for "plain XP SPx iso's" is here: http://www.howtohaven.com/system/createwindowssetupdisk.shtml http://www.howtohaven.com/system/slipstream-xp-service-pack-3.shtml jaclaz
  7. Hey, WOW!, you can apply for a Sherlock Holmes award! HOW the heck did you manage to deduce that? Hardly the most well kept secret in the world Clearly published and even set as sticky (because noone even thought to unpin it ): http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=10068 jaclaz
  8. Absolute nonsense. You're saying we should write obsolescent batch files (as if it was still 1985), just because a archaic shell is actually able to delete files? We should waste countless hours of our precious time so we can save on a minuscule fraction of a single penny worth of disk space? Absolute nonsense. You're saying that we should clean our PC's ourselves , just because you cannot hire a competent IT professional to do that for you? We should waste countless hours of our precious time so we can save on a minuscule fraction of a single penny worth of hired IT technician? jaclaz
  9. There must be still some misunderstanding. Most of the various "old versions" of the links do not work. That's why I put together my half @§§ed converter. Though poorly written it has been working with most links generated up to the new (right now last-before-current) syntax. From the converter "source code": http://jaclaz.altervista.org/Projects/Convert_address.htm Curently: Examples #1÷#5 work now "as they are" (with the small side issue that current board doesn't "parse" #3 correctly) Examples #6÷#9 still correspond to "a suffusion of yellow". If you submit those same links to the converter, the results are: 1. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=142942 2. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=142942&view=findpost&p=915865 3. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=145350&view=findpost&p=932895 4. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=93 5. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=98 6. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=106064 7. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=143022 8. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=143002&view=findpost&p=916384 9. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=137119&st=20 ALL working. The current board "transforms" them to: 1. / 2. /page__p__915865#entry915865 3. dv6-2150ee/page__p__932895#entry932895 4. http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/93-windows-post-install-wizard-wpi/ 5. http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/98-miscellaneous/ 6. 7. 8. 9. Problem is that NOW the board seemingly generates yet another syntax, NOT among the examples, and thus the converter doesn't work for them, I am asking if this current syntax is stable, so that I can update the converter to take care of them too. In detail: #1 is OK #2 does NOT work in the converter #3 does NOT work in the converter #4 is OK #5 is OK #6 is OK #7 is OK #8 does NOT work in the converter #9 does NOT work in the converter In practice ANY link that contain the "page__p__" OR the "page__st__" part is not working - this is the "new" syntax" I was talking about. I can confirm that right now (Opera 9.52) NO "buttons" are working for me. I will try later with another PC or after a reboot to make sure it's not something "on my side". EIDT: Now everything "button related" works. jaclaz
  10. That must be some kind of "peculiar" controller driver that "adds" that listing things, I don't seem to remember ever seeing something like what you describe. The general idea is quite easy. If you set in BIOS the SATA device as "IDE emulation" or "ATA emulation", the BIOS will "tell" Windows that there is an IDE controller (and one or more devices attached to it) connected to the motherboard and uses the "generic" IDE driver. (with a given PCI\VEN&DEV #) If you set in BIOS the SATA device as "SATA" or "AHCI", the BIOS will "tell" Windows that there is a SATA controller (and one or more devices attached to it) connected to the motherboard and uses the "specific chipset" SATA/AHCI driver.(with another given PCI\VEN&DEV #) Point is, if you are in another situation, i.e. you add a PCI card with a SATA controller on it to a "normal" IDE installed XP, what happens? You simply add the driver in the booted XP and next time you boot it will be loaded automatically. The "trick" is simply that of installing the "specific" SATA/AHCI driver whilst the device is NOT connected (since it is booted with IDE/ATA emulation) AND make sure the driver has the right "group" and "start type" to be able to load at next boot. Problem is, or might be, some controllers that use the SAME PCI\VEN. Another possible option (again to be checked for the specific setup) is to install UNIATA: http://alter.org.ua/soft/win/uni_ata/ and then "switch" to the "proper" driver. As always happens with this kind of things, your actual mileage may vary. jaclaz
  11. Maybe easier : http://www.xs4all.nl/~wstudios/Associate/index.html What happens if INSTEAD of double clicking you right click on the file ? (it is possible that besides the "association", the "default action for the MHTML type of file has become "Edit" or anyway some action different from "Open with", that triggers Notepad instead of IE) jaclaz.
  12. Works as before. I don't get the sense of your answer. I can assure you that links on the board have some time ago changed their syntax, as my converter that used to work with most of the various "old" syntaxes started again "missing" some links. Right now (for whatever reasons) the buttons like "bold", "italic", "understrike" are not working. The Search module has not any more the preference (needed as I see it) to ask for "view results as threads" and "view results as posts". So I would assume that the transition (or whatever) has not been completed yet. I am only asking IF, WHEN the board will have a "stable" configuration, this can be stated officially, as there is little sense in adapting things to deal with settings that are going to soon change again. jaclaz
  13. Too bad. I missed them. ( I like threats, even better than tricks ) jaclaz
  14. I beg to disagree, BOTH on the actual statement and on the philosophical comment. http://alter.org.ua/soft/win/uni_ata/ You can always install the "real" SATA drivers AFTER install. See also here: jaclaz
  15. Three people in a row that COMPLETELY FAILED to read BOTH the read-me-first AND the FGA's: Lupi iaconelli12 lewisspearing Since lewisspearing solved his problem (after having tried almost any of the "wrong" approaches available), only two little indians remain: Lupi iaconelli12 Please, please, PLEASE, DO READ these: BEFORE asking the same, SAME, SAME, SAME, ALREADY ASKED n times questions. Particularly @Lupi , do you really think that IF serial mices had a rs-232 to TTL converter capable of 38400 b/s: we wouldn't ALREADY have serial mices among the possible source for the thingy the serial for the mouse would have been set at 1200 b/s? If you want, you can also try: an AC/DC converter from your old Valve Radio a data cable from your old PSION direct connetion to mains (either 110 or 220 V Ac will do ) Comeon, READ the actual specs, you can build your own and in the thread there are several different schematics, but you want a RS-232 to TTL converter (or a USB to TTL converter AND NOT *anything* that comes with a DB9 or *anything* that crosses your mind or *anything* "random" that you happen to have lying around) Particularly @iaconelli12, do you really think that IF a PCB swap was possible we wouldn't already have it listed among the possible ways. BTW exactly one post above yours it is clearly written how PCB swapping, beside NOT working may also break the hard disk(s) for good. Please also note how at the top of this page there is a nice message saying: Is there a particularly difficult part in the above that you have problems understanding? jaclaz

  18. Last time I checked an ORIGINAL PC-3000 (from Ace labs, NOT a cheaper Chinese "clone") retailed for around US$ 3,000.00. The half @§§ed Chinese copies that usually come with obsolete software and NO support, should be available fo less than US$ 1,000.00. It's simply not worth it. A lot of firms will unlock your drive for fifty bucks or so, but the drive itself (since you don't care about the DATA) is worth maybe 20 US$. jaclaz
  19. I'll just throw this one on the table, and see if anyone finds it of use: http://web.archive.org/web/20020203213518/http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/17/19/ut1719.001.html http://web.archive.org/web/20010814222127/www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/17/19/ut1719.002.html http://web.archive.org/web/20011104234347/www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/17/19/ut1719.003.html http://web.archive.org/web/20010814224059/www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/17/19/ut1719.004.html http://web.archive.org/web/20010417145818/www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/17/19/ut1719.005.html http://web.archive.org/web/20010417150504/www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/17/19/ut1719.006.html http://web.archive.org/web/20010417151309/www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/17/19/ut1719.007.html http://web.archive.org/web/20010420173410/hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?b=pcm&fcode=000UYR Actual file needs a bit of googling. http://thedailyreviewer.com/computing/view/defrag-status-104442191 jaclaz
  20. @jds Yep, we are saying the same thing, only a dfferent one. I am saying that probably the instsec.dll is triggered by ANY of the three mentioned .dll's. You are saying that it is triggered by "rsaenh.dll" ONLY. But actually you tried "rsaenh.dll" ONLY. I mean, we have no evidence that if INSTEAD of "rsaenh.dll", you had tried with "rsaenhs.dll" ONLY (OR with "schannel.dll" ONLY) you wouldn't have had the same result. "Final" statement should be: jaclaz
  21. The HDDerase aka secureerase here: http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/SecureErase.shtml right? Yes, you need to know the password for it. So, it is definitely an ATA password, right? If it is, you may need a Commercial program, like: http://www.hddunlock.com/ Or a professional tool like: http://www.hdd-tools.com/products/rrs/ (examples) or PC3000 and the likes. I don't know of any "free" method. jaclaz
  22. About deepfreeze, I have used it some years ago, it seemed to be working all right, though I vaguely remember that a few times , most probably due to users being smarter than what the Faronics guys (or myself ) were expecting, it crashed, and when it did (as said in RARE occasions), it did crash badly. I would say it is a handy solution for shared computers, like a lab or an internet point, but I personally prefer the more traditional approach of anti-virus, etc. as while the system is NOT reset, anything could spread nonetheless to the newtwork. All in all I would say a good app, for a limited, targeted number of uses. jaclaz
  23. @Xntryk1 I guess you are missing the point of my previous post. The idea is that if you think that something is "new technology", you check if it is BEFORE posting the "news" on a place where the technology is re-known since years. Like: http://tinyurl.com/2b823s7 This way you avoid giving the impression of being a spammer AND you look a lot less like a n00b. Since MSFN is (rightfully) very strongly oriented AGAINST SPAM and SPAMMERS, you risked being banned (while being in perfect good faith), In this particular case, had you not also posted the other two (IMHO senseless) posts I cited, you REALLY risked it. Anyway, if you re-read the mentioned posts, one of which needlessly bumping a two years old thread, can you explain to me which contribution to the Community was intended in them? The first one does NOT help in any way to solve the OP problem, the second only tells us that you are not familiar with Linux and that you are frustrated by this (something that I personally rate as having very little relevance to other members), The friendly advice is to post meaningful things in the future and think before posting, that's all. jaclaz
  24. From the "quick and dirty" suggestion I made (check instsec.dll with bintext or similar), the ONLY lines containg "dll" are: So, all three dll's are somehow "queried" or "checked": rsaenhs.dll rsaenh.dll schannel.dll it is very possible that one only is enough to "trigger" the patching, though the order in which they are listed seem to suggest that the "first one" is rsaenhs.dll. jaclaz
  25. Use grub4dos mapping features to map a floppy image to RAM (if only needed during TXTSETUP part - real mode), add Firadisk driver if access to the floppy is also needed in the GUI part (protected mode). Read this seemingly unrelated thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=137714 And this one: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=20543 jaclaz
