  1. UNsurprisingly (JFYI): http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/163802-make-vista-stop-updating-reading-preventing-access-to-records/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/163824-vista-with-sp2-faster-than-windows-7-sp1/ jaclaz
  2. Why don't you §@ç#ing leave that torrent alone (because it DEFINITELY it is NOT the "right" file and ADDITIIONALLY it may be full of crap/malware) and don't you do EXACTLY what schwups advised? In other words, WHATEVER is your problem that torrent file is NOT the solution for it. Just in case : jaclaz
  3. No, I would never download a torrent file unless I actually know before what is it (i.e. the link from it comes from a known, reliable source). jaclaz
  4. Let me remember to file this under "64 bit system advantage". jaclaz
  5. ... and AFAICR the thingy can be extracted with uniextract alright... File is EXACTLY 2,082,816 bytes, used to be named pntfs.exe, now it is named ntfs_win98_free.exe. jaclaz
  6. Oops, we were cross-posting, just so you know, I added some more info to my previous posts (about using a "normal" USB 2.0 cable for testing) jaclaz
  7. Before spending the money for a new cable, I would: check that for any reason an internal connector has not come loose try the thingy on another PC try the actual hard disk in another caddy or directly connected to a SATAThat behaviour can be more or less attributed to 5 (five) causes: a failed USB cable/connector (both on the external case and on the actual PC if connector) the Operating System a failure of the internal connectors of the external case a failure of the actual controller (USB to SATA bridge) in the exterenal cable a failure of the actual hard diskAnd you can use a USB 2.0 micro-b cable alright for testing. It is obvious that a USB 3.0 plug won't fit (physically) into a USB 2.0 socket, but a USB 2.0 micro-b plug will obviously fit alright (and work, though at USB 2.0 mode) into a USB 3.0 socket. Bear with me, please, on USB 2.0 you have only four connections, 5V+, 0V, D+, D-. The USB 3.0 has more connections. The connections in the micro-b connector of USB 3.0 are the same as those of a USB 2.0 connector (half), see here: http://www.moddiy.com/pages/USB-2.0-%7B47%7D-3.0-Connectors-%26-Pinouts.html http://pinoutsguide.com/PortableDevices/micro_usb_3_connector_pinout.shtml Imagine that you have an USB 2.0 bus (which has 4 lines) connected with a USB 3.0 cable (that has more than 4 lines) to a USB 3.0 device (that has more than 4 lines). Now imagine that you have a USB 2.0 bus (which has 4 lines) connected with a USB 2.0 cable (that has 4 lines) to a USB 3.0 device (that has more than 4 lines). The effect is exactly the same.. jaclaz
  8. Very good , the problem is then now (in my perverted mind ) downgraded to "non-problem". OFM's : http://www.softpanorama.org/OFM/index.shtml or more generally dual-pane file managers are the exact type of tool for the task at hand, and I would guess that anyone not having 7-zip already on his/her system has some more serious problems anyway . @bookie32 You are IMHO falling in the usual X/Y problem: http://perl.plover.com./Questions3.html What you want to do can be easily achieved using method W, there is no sense in banging your head over and over against a wall because you want to use method X instead (or method Z ) Goal:organize favorites Best method/tool to reach the goal: dual pane file manager Suggested tool : 7-zip (that you should have anyway on your system) Case closed. jaclaz
  9. WHAT EXACTLY makes you think that it should be a much larger file? jaclaz
  10. JFYI: http://support.usr.com/education/peripherals0.asp jaclaz
  11. Moodie1, with all due respect, you came here asking for advice, you blatantly ignored it, and now are asking if some Commercial crap (which BTW needs a running operating system on which it is to be installed) will do? JFYI, the missing BOOT.INI file is very likely to be not an issue. First thing it is to be seen if it was actually missing (as it is normally flagged as hidden and system), and second thing XP has a failsafe provision to the effect that if the BOOT.INI is actually missing it will attempt anyway to boot to the system in C:\Windows. If you provide some actual details of what exact CD you have in your hands (just as an example an XP "Gold", without service packs won't be able to install on a LBA48 disk drive) we may be able to support you, but forget about these wonderful automagic tools that you find on the 'net, in most cases they simply won't work, and in the worst ones they may be additionally vectors for malware. jaclaz
  12. Doesn't your mpotherboard "beep"? (or change the fan's speed when booting) Traditionally (but not necessarily in your case) similar issues (video going out) have two likely culprits: the video card driversthe PSU starting to failjaclaz
  13. Yep , since I also don't buy it at face value, I asked to make sure it was like it seemed. The only logical explanation I can find is that *somehow* this action "resets" *something* in the stupid EFI/UEFI which later allows the even stupider Windows 8.1 to initialize correctly. jaclaz
  14. Read the recommended guide (again), particularly this part: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128807-the-solution-for-seagate-720011-hdds/page-152#entry967505 jaclaz
  15. Check the contacts you are insulating, did you try with the motor or head contacts? Whichever you used, try with the other set. Redo from start the procedure. jaclaz
  16. Well, I would NOT call this "automation", but what's in a name, after all? Here: http://www.robvanderwoude.com/batchfiles.php jaclaz
  17. Sure, but what I don't understand is if you want to 1) actually TYPE each single jsmith.DOMAIN.V2, jdoe.DOMAIN.V2, etc., or if you want to haveprocessed 2) ALL profiles that:: are in d:\profiles\have suffix ."DOMAIN.V2"(I suggested you a possible solution for #2 above) Or you want something *like*: @ECHO OFFset /p profile="Enter user profile: "IF EXIST "d:\profiles\%profile%.DOMAIN.V2" ECHO psexec -s "icacls" "d:\profiles\%profile%.DOMAIN.V2" /grant administrators:F /tjaclaz
  18. Good. Now we know that the issue is NOT connected to ADS, and we can move to *something* else. @bookie32 Is there a (valid) reason to do this moving of favorites in Explorer? I mean, can you try running 7-zip (in dual pane mode) and try doing the same? This way we get to understand if it is "explorer specific" or "system specific". I am also not understanding if these "favorites" have a .lnk or a .url extension. @bhplt Is this the error message? http://superuser.com/questions/149056/disable-these-files-might-be-harmful-to-your-computer-warning http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/35ca8f9c-5e69-4b7f-a002-0d72fa0dc14b/possible-bug-how-do-you-prevent-windows-security-from-questioning-access-to-zip-files-on-lan-nas?forum=w7itprosecurity according to the above it seems like connected to the list of Internet Explorer Local Intranet sites, see also: http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/TechOff/513454-QA-How-to-turn-off-network-share-explorer-execution-warnings http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303650/en-us jaclaz
  19. There is some communication problems you were very detailed in exposing the problem , but I am completely failing to understand what you mean by "input field" , or more precisely how do you plan to "fill" this "input field". I mean, if I get this right, you could go for a recursive command *similar* to: @ECHO OFFFOR /F "tokens=* delims=" %%A IN ('DIR /B /AD d:\profiles\ ^| FIND /I "DOMAIN"' ) DO (ECHO psexec -s "icacls" "%%A" /grant administrators:F /t )That should ECHO the command for each %%A which is a directory under d:\profiles\ and contains "DOMAIN" or "domain". Is this (once verified you will need to remove the ECHO) what you want to achieve? jaclaz
  20. Since I don't, can you explain it to me? jaclaz
  21. Can you provide some details on this procedure? jaclaz
  22. Question is, of course: Is this by design? (or - say - temporarily and will be made available in a next release)? jaclaz
  23. I will try again. Can you please check IF by any chance the files (which I presume being stored on a NTFS volume, but you failed to provide a confirmation about) do have an Alternate Data Stream? If yes, can you try and delete this ADS from a few of those files and check if the behaviour remains the same? JFYI, this does NOT provide *any* meaningful info: Which link? Which advice in it? Which post in the link? Whining and ranting dont normally help much in solving a problem, often diagnosing it helps more. jaclaz
  24. Check your 98 IRQ steering: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/182604/en-us jaclaz
  25. Come on , putting a message to someone who was NOT supposed to EVER see the thing where it was printed/stamped. A more successful way to let the establishment get the message : jaclaz
