To be picky - as I am - what you currently use/have (and "quite like") is NOT Windows 8.1 (as "delivered" by MS, i.e. the thing that everyone can have) but rather a heavily tweaked, tuned up, and refined Windows 8.1 utilizing a number of third party tools most of which aimed to have back the Windows 7 functionalities/look/usage paradigm. jaclaz

Toshiba 3TB GPT Partitioned & Fat32
jaclaz replied to Bug_zs's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
No. What I doubt is your statement that "It puts an "Extended Capacity Manager" in the boot sector", maybe it is in the MBR (and I presume in some of the hidden sectors, I doubt in the bootsector). But however, if I had to choose a "software tool", I would personally test first the one produced by the manufacturer of the board and only later a "third party tool". Just for the record, Acronis has in the past produced exceptionally good software but also had some hiccups and caused some issues. To recap, if I were you I would: firstly try without any software add-on, as it is very possible that the Toshiba can exposes 4 kb sectors alright secondly try the motherboard manufacturer tool <- which surely has been tested on the specific motherboard thirdly try third party software - please consider how the Seagate version of the Acronis tool will only work on Seagate disk drives (besides only being licensed for use on them and not on other brand devices) so you will need to either find out if Toshiba provides it or buy a full license form Acroniis for the productjaclaz -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
jaclaz replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Yes and no. The advantage of having ALL the devices involved (the PC, the converter and the disk) powered by the same PSU is that you won't have the need to ground everything together in order to avoid possible ground loops (and consequent gibberish on the terminal). Having a separate power supply implies the need for accurate grounding, but it is easier to remove power off the disk. With a single PSU, you simply pull off the disk power connector, then switch off the PC and reboot and re-connected it (and this is more or less likely to take the suggested 60 seconds). Please consider also (see the recommended guide by CarterinCanada: http://www.mapleleafmountain.com/seagatebrick.html ) how the actual powering off of the disk drive may be needed or may be needed not. jaclaz -
@Aloha @tomasz86 Sure, the previous posts were about "speed", and particularly about "assumed" or "felt" faster speed when compared to Windows 7, which is measurable, while it "being better", like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. jaclaz
-
That's good , in the sense that you are wrong , but you have the freedom to be so . More seriously, please define "better", all test reports (of actual tests, not subjective impressions) I have seen seem to imply that NoelC has hit the nail right on the head (re: speed). jaclaz

Among "data transfer" options/connectivity Wi-Fi is one among the slowest ones, and it's speed is not usually connected with the OS in the VM, but rather to the kind of Wi-Fi standard in use and on the actual drivers (in this case could be the drivers of BOTH the "host OS", i.e. in your case the OsX ones and those in use by the Os in the VM). It seems to me like the non-issue is the actual XP, however you may want to follow the advices here to see if there is a misconfiguration of some kind: http://kb.parallels.com/it/8978/?show_at=en jaclaz

switch from Windows XP 64 Bit Edition to anything else
jaclaz replied to colore's topic in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
Well, that's a difference I can think of several better places , since this thread is very specific to XP 64 bit edition, and the topic of virtual machines (let alone Office, and Office 2007 and network access) has not seemingly been touched yet. Seriously, maybe instead of hijacking this topic it would be better if you start a new thread, here if the XP you are running into the Vm is a 64 bit : http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/104-windows-xp-64-bit-edition/ or here: http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/34-windows-xp/ if it is a normal 32 bit one. You will need to provide all the details that miss from your post above, like what exact version (32 bit or 64 bit) of Windows, which SP, what is the host OS, which is the VM you are using, how EXACTLY you setup network, etc., etc. if you need help/support in troubleshooting the issues. jaclaz -
Do you mean that they are monitoring MSFN or that MSFN is not a really free place? I would be glad to try and help you make your rusty italian a little bit brighter, PM me where and when and we can "talk" (please no chats or similar). jaclaz

I am not trying to doubt (or limit the amount of) your paranoia . I was only trying to establish the borders of the conspiracy, i.e. I guess everyone will agree that Vista and later are part of it, many have doubts on XP , you are now stating than 9x is outside it, the point is where exactly NT4.0, 2K and Me are in this.... (inside or outside the big remote control conspiracy) jaclaz

jaclaz replied to Bug_zs's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Allow me to doubt that statement. Let's do it like this : Install that thingy, then see if Ghost (from DOS) sees the "Extended Capacity" Volume. If you are going that way, if I were you I would rather use Asrock's utility, instead: http://www.asrock.com/feature/3tb/ jaclaz -
Did you try that method (and NOT any other one) with an untouched source? Did you try that method (and NOT any other one) with your specific nlited source? Did the former succeed and the latter fail? If yes, HOW exactly (with which error, etc.)? I am BTW pretty sure that if you start a new thread asking ilko_t about your issues with your nlited source with WinSetupfromUSB and/or try asking Akeo about Rufus support, they may be able to pinpoint the issue, and workaround it in their respective tools/methods. IMHO installing from USB is outside the scope of nlite and well within the scope of the tools designed to install from USB. jaclaz

Poll and Discuss Defragmentation Software
jaclaz replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Software Hangout
Yep, my point was different, let alone for the moment performance, it is not the ONLY parameter, a fully contiguous file can be parsed (and recovered) in case of very serious filesystem issues, a fragmented one - particularly the kind of file that may be bigger than 64 Mb - hardly so. I was not ranting about removing the automagic provision, only about being allowed to manually ask for a "full" defrag (it would have costed nothing to NOT remove an existing feature). Moreover the 64 Mb "limit" is undocumented/unverified/untested, the size may well be connected to a number of factors that the good MS guys did not consider or did not test at all, type of usage of the machine, type of storage subsystem, type of files in use on average, etc. I won't buy that a "magic" 64 Mb one-size-fits-all actually fits all "properly". jaclaz -
Does the conspiracy comprise also NT 4.00 and 2K? jaclaz

I find it odd that one single thing I've "nlite'd" would cause these tools to fail in entirelly different ways. Some cause my auto-logon not too work(WinSetupFromUSB), some stop in the middle of "registering Components"(WinNTSetup) and others BSOD before I'm even able to select my drive in text-mode(UnetBootIn etc.)This too much? Cannot say. You reported that you were not able to install an XP 64 from USB. I told you how there is at least one method (tested and working) to do so. It is up to you to test that method (and NOT any other one) first with an untouched source and later with your nlited .iso. You were seemingly whining and besides whining barking up the wrong tree , you were also whining generically, we have now several different methods and tools to install from USB, if one doesn't work, try another one, my scope was only to let you know how installing XP 64 from USB is possible and it has been done. jaclaz
-
Installing an XP x64 from USB is perfectly possible, making use of the 64 bit version of firadisk driver, maybe you nlited it "wrongly" or "too much": http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/137714-install-xp-from-a-ram-loaded-iso-image/?p=1061029 jaclaz

I am failing to see why a hybrid MBR cannot be used, though as the good Terabyte guys told you if the disk has 4k sectors it should work in pure MBR without issues read here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158361-confirmed-3tb-hdd-usb-drive-on-winxp-32bit/ and/or try a hybrid MBR/GPT: http://www.rodsbooks.com/gdisk/hybrid.html jaclaz -

Poll and Discuss Defragmentation Software
jaclaz replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Software Hangout
And IF people need to do some data recovery (file based) they should be very happy about not being anymore able to get larger than 64 Mb contiguous files on 7: Nice new features, BTW: ... but still they could have made more options available in the GUI instead of needing to go on command line and use the -w switch: http://www.howtohaven.com/system/vistadefragmentation.shtml (on Vista) and later remove completely the option in 7. http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/30019-full-defrag-option-via-cmd.html http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/exert-control-and-defrag-from-the-command-line-in-windows-7/4306/ jaclaz -

So, the disk itself is good. It is possible that the external enclosure (or cables/contacts in it) cause the issue. jaclaz -

Let me understand this, you used a program without actually knowing what you were doing, very probably outside the intended scope/usage of the program, in such a way that you are not even capable of clearly reporting what exactly you did and since it didn't by sheer luck do what you presumed it should have done it is a bug of the nlite program? Instead of asking for assistance BEFORE doing the whatever you did (which rather clearly you had not any previous experience with) you come here asking for help AFTER, and once a suggestion is given to you, you first do ANOTHER thing, and then state how the suggested procedure is too difficult for you? I presume that also grub4dos, RMPREPUSB and the PassPass script will result as being full of bugs (when and if you will have time to try them). I strongly suggest you to NOT try them , as they are potentially dangerous programs/tools , and I don't want to be (indirectly) the cause of further whining. jaclaz
