  1. Look, this is not semantics. You asked for something about changing profiles folders location (WITHOUT mentioning "unattended") and I provided what I had available. Then you asked about the same thing BUT this time asking for it being "earlier" or "unattended", and again I provided what I had available. Will any of them ("after install", "in audit mode" or "unattended") work for "folders in folder"? Cannot say , you will need to try ALL THREE methods to know. jaclaz
  2. It depends. IF you quick formatted (AND NOT "full" formatted) AND IF you quick formatted under the SAME Operating System AND filesystem as the partition/volume was originally formatted, THEN: any non-fragmented (i.e. contiguous) file can be normally recovered, including it's filename as long as it was in a directory (NOT in root) any non-fragmented (i.e. contiguous) file can be recovered, losing only it's filename and/or needing - maybe - some patching/correction any fragmented file is normally lost (unless a valid directory entry for it has been not overwritten, i.e. this depends on how "full" was the disk and on a number of other factors)Your best choice right now is to get this tool: http://dmde.com/ and see if it can rebuild a volume structure. The free edition can recover one file at the time, up to you (IF it can find the files you are interested in) to recover them one by one or upgrade to a paid for edition. Alternatively, you can try the PHOTOREC tool (complement to the mentioned TESTDISK): http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec Take your time DON'T PANIC (assume that the above is written in large, friendly letters) don't do in a hurry anything you are NOT very sure about, ideally you should now make a "forensic sound" image of the disk "as is", BEFORE making further "damages" by mistake jaclaz
  3. These should be the relevant info: You will most probably need to integrate the drivers: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=20775&ProdId=816〈=eng&OSVersion=Windows%202000%20%20*&DownloadType= http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20775/eng/readme.txt jaclaz
  4. Please, check your edition of the dictionary, for some strange reasons your copy has the definitions for upgrade and downgrade exchanged. As a general reference: You upgrade when you can do MORE things OR the SAME things in a more convenient way.You downgrade when you can do LESS things OR the SAME things in a less convenient way.jaclaz
  5. Well, you are not posting enough data to even attempt to provide you with possible answers/advice. The only sure thing is that you shouldn't EVEN THINK of doing a quick format and then running Recuva. Your disk - for whatever reason(s) - is now seen as either as unpartitioned or with an unformatted partition. Which OS are you running? Which OS was running on the laptop? How big is the hard disk? How was it partitioned before? Which filesystem(s) was/were in the partition(s)/volume(s) on it? Answers to the above questions are needed, as well as you getting TESTDISK: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk and run it with the LOG option and attaching the log to your next post. jaclaz
  6. Well, it is NOT "my" method, I personally believe that "fully unattended" is "pure folly" (or "lost time") unless there is a "serious" reason, (like tens or hundreds of machines to be setup), and I have NO idea if it can work (or if it will work or if it may work with or without some slight or serious modifications). You posted about not being able to find a link, and I tried to help you in finding it, without any comment/opinion (direct or indirect) on the actual validity of the question (let alone of the answer). jaclaz
  7. Like the one linked under "Related Tutorials" on the already linked to page? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/285983-user-profile-customize-during-installation.html or this one? http://caspan.com/2012/12/move-the-user-folder-to-a-separate-drive-the-right-way/ and, from the mouth of the wolf: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949977/en-us AND: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/124198-user-profiles-create-move-during-windows-7-installation.html jaclaz
  8. Let's see if we can understand the issue. When you set in BIOS a AHCI controller into "IDE compatibility" mode it wiil "expose" to the OS a given PCI Vendor/Device ID, when you set it to AHCI/SATA it will "expose" a different one: http://www.pcidatabase.com/ example: From what you report it seems like the *whatever" VEN/DEV that motherboard exposes is not "hooked" by the "Microsoft Standard Dual channel PCI IDE Controller" driver (which is the "default" driver in Windows 2K), as the result is the same as when you set the BIOS in AHCI mode (since a driver for it is missing). Can you check from the Ubuntu which PCI VEN/DEV's are exposed (both when in IDE and when in AHCI mode)? http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/man8/lspci.8.html jaclaz
  9. Back to the usual Off-Topic , the new middle age (in the sense of barriers preventing the exchange of information and culture) is coming to the UK: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/03/david-cameron-internet-porn-filter-censorship-creep http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2013/12/camerons-internet-filter-goes-far-beyond-porn-and-was-always-plan The actual "available settings" are IMNSHO: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/46809/kw/parental%20controls/c/346,6679,6680/related/1 besides being "too generic", also seriously outdated/out of the world, I mean, if "Nudity": is ON, a British kid won't be able to see this page (please note how the word "bondage" is in the url address, which is a pejorative , most probably including it into "Pornography" as well): http://www.swimmer.com.au/funkita-form-black-bondage-split-strap-one-piece-swimsuit.htm or this one (which has "skull and bones" which would probably be included also in "Obscene and Tasteless"): http://www.decathlon.co.uk/lidia-skull-bones-swimsuit-id_8270651.html but will be able (of course) to see this one: http://www.swimbritain.co.uk/whats-involved/ which could actually deliver a message vaguely reminiscent of pedopornography Now, anyone may argue that good ol' p0rn should be blocked to protect the innocent , but the issue here is where exactly is the limit to be placed, http://adrianshort.org/2013/12/22/some-websites-should-be-unblockable/ jaclaz
  10. It is not a good idea to post your e-mail on a public Forum, as it will be scanned by harvester and you will soon get any kind of unwanted emails. See if using the WinUSB_Full Patcher: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=14181&st=1986#entry123806 is easier for you. jaclaz
  11. Something like this? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18629-user-folders-change-default-location.html jaclaz
  12. Yep, but with a more dragon-like face : jaclaz
  13. Link to a Commercial converter tool to be posted in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, ... My bet is on one made by Systools ... jaclaz
  14. And , as I did NOT state (because it is self-evident), PEtoUSB (which is NOT PE2USB, BTW) is intended - like PE2USB - to copy to a stick a PE (Pre-installation Environment), and NOT an XP install (which won't work from the stick without modifications, because, though similar to a PE, an XP install is NOT a PE and needs different/additional settings in order to work from a USB device). You had a problem , I told you why you had it and how you can solve it , you are of course perfectly free to ignore the given advice, case closed. jaclaz
  15. As always reading the data, even if already smoothed/adjusted/whatever, gives some insight. Who can now negate the great success of the April 2013 "Run your NT" initiative? Windows NT was in April 2013 a 0.11% (a dramatic 57% increase from March 2013 0.07%) and ramped up to an astounding 0.22% (please read it as a 300% increase) in May 2013! BUT let's take Dec 2012 "ALL Windows data": 0.00+1.72+0.05+0.01+45.11+5.67+39.08+0.04+0.04+0.00+0.00+0.00+0.00=91.72% vs. Dec 2013: 3.60+6.89+0.00+0.00+47.52+3.61+28.98+0.03+0.09+0.00+0.00+0.00+0.00=90.72% I.e. in one year MS Operating System (according to those data which BTW place Linux going from 1.19 to 1.73%) lost globally 1.00 % of "share". That is evidently a success of the MS marketing strategies, and a clear sign of the appreciation that customers have for their products . jaclaz
  16. You are seemingly assuming that you can somehow copy a XP setup to USB stick and install from it.Go here, http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/157-install-windows-from-usb/ and either learn how to manually make such a setup stick or use any of the automated tools.
  17. You are likely having BOTH a connection issue AND a grounding issue. Which EXACT converter are you using? How EXACTLY are you powering the converter? How EXACTLY are you powering the hard disk? Does the loopback test work OK? At which speed settings did you set HyperTerminal? Should you have failed to read the read-me-first and FGA's, NOW is like the right time to do it: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/143880-seagate-barracuda-720011-read-me-first/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/147532-fga-for-the-seagate-720011-drives/ jaclaz
  18. How much are you willing to pay for this privilege? Do you think that US$ 2.99 is too much for this? http://www.startisback.com/ Or possibly for free (but a donation would be appreciated): http://www.classicshell.net/ jaclaz
  19. To end up Explorer (which may or may not free more resources), you need to change the SHELL (otherwise it will restart) and kill it (from Task manager or similar). To change to (say) CMD.EXE as shell: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/change-shell-explorer-exe-custum-shell-users-and-not-administrator-t3129882.html or use a shell switcher, example: http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=196.10 jaclaz
  20. NO . 1/10 of a mm is a 1/10 of a mm, there are NO "power lines" within 0.1 mm from any screw on the PCB of a ST3100034as: http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0207/3304/products/ST3100034AS_FW_HP13_100466824_REV_C_PCB_1024x1024.jpeg?v=1378998992 and at least last time I checked screws did not move by themselves. I am sorry for your misadventure , but evidently you did something else and the *whatever* you did caused *something* to move more than 1/10 mm. jaclaz
  21. "Idea" may be a too ambitious definition , but I would try another tested working DVD drive before anything else. If the drive can read pressed (data) CD's but not "burned" ones it is very likely to be something "internal" of the drive (and not cable/cable selext/master/slave) IMHO. jaclaz
  22. Besides that hard disk, is also your Search/Google broken? Some hard disks need to have the read channel shorted, see: http://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18907&start=20 http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/157329-barracuda-lp-no-not-a-720011-nor-a-720012/ Cannot say if it applies to that particular hard disk and to that particular issue. jaclaz
  23. Sure, and noone AFAIK said anything against the actual "core" (which has some added features, but as seen is not particularly faster), only about the interface and the senselessly changed usage paradigms. As a layman example I do love my FIAT Panda, it is a great little car . Apart changing wheels, tires and suspensions to better handling, replacing spark plugs and exhaust system and tuning engine electronics to get some more juice from it, and replacing seats and interiors because they were uncomfortable and ugly, it is exactly like a stock Panda . jaclaz
  24. @Ponch Antivirus or not antivirus, Explorer normally "chokes" when a large number of files are selected, more specifically it "freezes" when you right click to select Copy or Move. @bizzybody What I would personally do (which not necessarily is a good idea, mind you), would be to rename all files in the folder adding to each of them a progressive number, and later use that info to copy/move them. As an example, this is a suitable simple renaming tool: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/CKRename.shtml (but you can do the same through a batch) jaclaz
