Yep, instead you'll have twice as many bugs - that can't be fixed by reinstalling (not like there is an option to uninstall IE either unfortunately). And you'll also have nice spyware and other scum on your PC. How nice? That was like the stupidest thing I had read here for a while.

Which version of Windows sucks the most?
CoffeeFiend replied to .PsychoMerc.'s topic in The Poll Center
Worst ever: Win Mistaken Edition! Hands down. Actually, all of Win9x -- a real BSODfest. -
SP2 has a lot of changes, it's good, I wouldn't want to go back to sp1a. I have yet to see (or hear about) a program "not install" or any kind of such issues because of SP2. Perhaps you can give us some program names? Boot time has not changed significantly on any of the PCs I installed it on (and that's a LOT of them).

The student edition is for students. If you can't afford microsoft office, there's always Open Office which is pretty good too - and free.

Just a side note: using HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1078081533-2025429265-839522115-1003 will not work (other than your current install on this very PC)
-
Use the ORK, it will let you choose Word only if that's what you want (and what components to include/exclude) Then you can use office shrinker to make your install smaller (if it actually works for you, it never did for me)

I didn't say it would work like that. I have no idea wher eyou got your msi file or anything. My point was, for a msi installer, you use a switch like /qb or /qn, not switches like -p"-s /v\"/qn\"" (and what a mess that is ) I install the v6.01 installer, then the 6.02 upgrade installer. It's 2 msi files, and using /qb on both (6.01 first) works perfectly every time. That's about as easy as it gets. But you're using some transforms that came from somewhere else, so of course your command line will be different. Calling /qb on a "real" v6.02 installer (versus an update or transforms) would have worked too (not like we can guess what kind of files you got) Hard to give you proper switches when we don't know what msi files you're using. I only gave you the generic switches, that's all... Otherwise there are pre-made packs like RyanVM's that seem to work and it's pretty simple to use too (haven't tried it)

Wow, that's some freaky $hit Definately printing that one, guys at the office are gonna go crazy on it

It's far from slow (especially if you use a optimized build with proper tweaks). And I have to agree with Wedge1's point (and the way the site is built will affect speed and might be more of a problem than any browser). Rendering wise, it is exactly the inverse. Firefox is MUCH better at rendering CSS properly (IE is broke at best, any real webmaster could all attest of the CSS hacks we've had to put up with to get IE to render pages properly). IE = pure unprofessionalism Yes, you're fully entitled to your opinion, even if it goes against known facts or simple logic

I'm not really going to answer your question here (Bi0haZarD might already have - haven't checked the link) I just want to let you know it's normal behavior. You typed the programs (.exe) filenames (extension not required), and they're on the path - so it will start. (open a command window and type PATH [enter] you'll see what it is) That's been there since the old dos days

Ugly? How can 5 skinned buttons (that you can change their appearance) and a window frame/scroll bar can even be ugly? You really don't have a point - not even there. @Zxian there's a extension called KeyConfig Lets you remap it all (and if you like mouse gestures like Opera, then we got that too) If I wasn't using FF, I'd be using Opera. Maxthon really is still IE, so it's out of the question! Firefox is the best hands down Besides - you'd rather use lesser but prettier software? I don't care about how it looks. I got themes and everything off (at work I even got my browser toolbars set to TEXT only). If it works and does a great job, it's all that matters.

The registration WAS machine specific until some recent build of v7.23 it seems. I just tried it with the new one and it's working fine too

It's no uglier/slower than IE (how ugly can a window frame and a half dozen skinned buttons can be?). IE will make your system a lot slower by installing scum on it and hence forces you to run spyware scanners to get rid of that stuff that wouldn't end up on your PC if you were using FF. People are just starting to accept spyware and scanning to remove it as a "normal" thing, along with forced reboots. FF doesn't have annoying popups and doesn't get spyware on your PC (IE will never be as good) . Also there's tons of great extensions for FF that makes IE look very featureless. It's a much better browser overall too (renders stuff properly and standards compliant and everything else) I've converted hundreds of people to FF... I have yet to see someone not like it. None of them ever complained of any problems with it (more the inverse, lots find great extensions for it) - and their PCs keep clean too.
-
It's an msi installer, so you use the normal msi switches. It's all there is to it... Should work fine on VMWare too but all VMs have glitches.

Firefox is a million times better. Try iy and you won't go back.

Windows Media Player 10 can go to hell

Windows Media.... what? Oh - OK! I think I remember what you're talking about... Say, have you ever tried Winamp? -
@thehalon Yes, I've been meaning to use that version too. @SiMoNsAyS Hmm, no I did not know the xpi files were in fact zip compressed (never looked into it). Looks like I got some homework to do. It might not be very complex (not sure - haven't peeked yet) nor very time consuming, but it doesn't look like a very easy way to maintain it either. What I'd really want is some way of just replacing the new plugins (add/replace xpi's) and have a script wrap it all together or something along those lines. Yes, you can call me lazy Firefox is a great browser, but installing it could be a lot easier. There's nearly a dozen different installers and methods. I'm not exactly sure how all of them work (I need some time to sit down and read/try some of them) and how easy they are to customize/maintain, or which ones have pre-made default profiles that you can configure and such... There's just too much to keep up with! And you can't just make the install once and you're done, it's a ongoing thing (lots of new versions, plugins being constantly updated/fixed and everything) so you gotta keep updating it... I'll try to spend some time to look at it tomorrow...

You're right. It seems like they've broken lots again... Thats the only thing that sucks about new versions. Hopefully it doesn't happen yet again when 1.1 comes out. I lost about half of them What works (yay!): Adblock, All-in-one gestures, Foxytunes, ieview, weatherfox, web developper toolbar... lots of them still Others are broke... BugMeNot, Checky, LiveHTTPHeaders, Keyconfig, FireSomething ... Nothing major. At least I got my essential ones working so far. This definately reinforces my point though. We are going to have to update our packages a few times in the next few weeks, as plugins are updated/fixed to work with the new version and as newer ones are discovered/required/adopted (and chances are that the same will happen with 1.1 later on). Just about anybody can somehow make a silent installer for firefox, but what we all need is a customizable one (with perhaps some basic/common stuff in it like SiMoNsAyS package which seems quite nice). I got no plans of spending an hour every week manually creating new packages of firefox as new versions and extensions are released... It's just too time consuming. Again, it needn't be pretty or have cute icons on the sfx, it just has to work and be maintainable, that's the challenge. I need some sleep bad

Personally, I'm not very interested in someone else's build, with whatever they chose as extensions, skins or settings. I'd rather have a basic unattended setup that's easily customizable as I got my very own list of extensions, bookmarks, search plugins, speed tweaks and what not I like to use (it would help a lot if it was easy to update the extensions). I've seen this http://firefox.dbltree.com/ method a good while back, but never really had a time to peek at it. Now there's SiMoNsAyS pre-made setup, this "FUN" method and a bunch of various msi's around. Looks like I'll have to try them all out, see what's easier to tweak, or else do it all by myself (yes, I can get pretty lazy). So far it looks like SiMoNsAyS's build has the nicest stuff included though, now we'll have to peek to see how he did it (or perhaps you could say how to easily change things if possible... don't bother if it's too much work). What would be even nicer is: a package with a script to build your very own one. Like, add plugins in this dir, searchplugins here, etc and then run this script that will integrate it all nicely and perhaps wrap it all up as a 7zip sfx or such... (Perhaps include a blank profile and various/required too so we don't have to create one) Anyways, that's plans for tomorrow or the day after, I'm too busy to look at it right now
-
I haven't bothered comparing (chances are most of what's at that page is already listed here but anyways...) There has been those kinds of tweaks around for quite a while, but I always delayed for v1 final to consider integrating it in my unattended install of firefox Firefox Speed Tweaks I'm sure there's lots more floating around on the web too, google could probably find lots
