  1. Okay, just checked an XP box and the option is still on the General tab but it is under Tasks and it is called "Show common tasks . . .". This toggles the selection from "Use Windows classic folders". Your information about files and folders and drives will show up in a section called Details to the left side of your folder.
  2. Try Winnt.exe. I don't think you can use winnt32.exe under that OS with win2k pro. Try the other and see if it works -- if it does, you've got your answer.
  3. I don't think it'll take days but the speed is going to depend on how much data is on the drive and how fast the drive is. Whatever the speed it's not going to be fast enough for the users. It's time to learn the thousand yard stare -- most of them go away if you look blank.
  4. You can use both home and pro, but I wouldn't buy any more home edition -- too icky! Get yourself some good reference books. I recommend the Windows 2003 Resource Kit from Microsoft Press and Mastering Windows Server 2003, by Mark Minasi from Sybex. I'm not sure what the differences are between SBS and the regular version of 2003 server but I recommend you do some research in the Microsoft website to make sure that whatever differences there are, you can live with them. Finally, if you can, take a class or get some self-paced training on server. You can do it by falling down a hole and following your nose, but that isn't very efficient or much fun. Good luck!
  5. Welcome! Remember: no spit wads or water balloons. We're a classy joint!
  6. Welcome! Remember: Walk on the left side!
  7. Sounds like your going to need to learn a scripting language like Perle or VBS. Good luck!
  8. Windows 2003 Server installs with a higher level of security than any other operating system, by default. You will need to do a bit of research to learn how to turn certain settings off. For your hotmail.com problem, your Internet Explorer Privacy settings are set high and may not be alowing your to see hotmail.com. See the help files for information about these settings. I recommend Sybex Mastering Windows Server 2003, by Mark Minasi for anyone running or using this OS. The Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit would also be a good investment.
  9. It's possible your activeX control is unsigned, then. Be very careful when enabling download of unsigned activex controls. Personally, I wouldn't do it.
  10. Welcome! Be careful not to spill your beer on the carpet. It's new.
  11. Are you talking about removing the policy every time the user logs off or removing the policy forever? The policy will persist as long as it is applied to the OU. If you remove it from the OU, it should go away for the user.
  12. Hello! Doesn't everyone have issues with Microsoft?
  13. Welcome abeo! BTW: I never let anyone install anything on my machines! I'm all about the power!
  14. Cool! I've created shares on our 2k3 server and not had any problems. Does the Share Permissions tab show Everyone with Read or with Full Control now while you are having this problem? Let me know if you get it fixed.
  15. What type of policy are we talking about? For instance, if you setup a software policy and then remove it, there will be an option to remove the software from the users or computers it affects. You might also check your effective settings. If this is a local policy and there is a site, domain, or OU policy that conflicts, the parent policy will be the effective policy. One way I check is to open the local policy and look at the local policy versus the effective policy and then try to find the policy that created the effective setting. Check out the Windows 2000 Resource Kits for more detailed information: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techi...-us/default.asp
  16. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer Select Folder Options from the Tools menu On the General tab, select the Enable Web content in folders radio button Click OK
  17. This won't remove the app from your server but it will get rid of those annoying shortcuts: To make Outlook Express icon never appear again: Run Regedit Open: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} Delete Stub Path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6} for Windows Media player? OR HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\>{22d6f312-b0f6-11d0-94ab-0080c74c7e95}
  18. Hmmmm . . . I don't think converting a server to a workstation is going to give you a clue as to why the network does not work. Could it be a driver problem?? Do you have a hardware diagnostics program? Have you double and triple checked your network settings -- protocol configs, DHCP, DNS, binding order etc.? If running TCP/IP, have you run IPCONFIG? Ping? What were your results, if any? Have you checked the NIC in the Device Manager -- device conflicts or hardware failure? Reseated the card? Tried a different slot on the motherboard? Tried the card(s) in another PC? Is your hardware on the HCL? Tested the wall jack? The hub/switch jack? The patch cable(s)? If nothing here gives you a clue, I'd re-install the operating system.
  19. Are we talking share or NTFS permisions?? Is this an NTFS partition or volume?? For NTFS permissions, have you unchecked the "Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object" check box? Did you click yes when it asked you if you wanted the new permissions to all files and subfoders when changing the permissions? Share permissions are only the entry point. If those permissions are set to full control, then this is not your problem. However, with share and NTFS permissions combined, the effective permission is the most restrictive permission for the user. So if your share permissions are full control but your NTFS permission is Read, you only have Read access to the files and folders for that share. When you moved the files to the new server, they would not have retained their share or NTFS permissions. They inherit the NTFS permissions from the target locations. This is why you must clear the "Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object" check box. And they wouldn't be using any old SIDs either. Good luck!
  20. I wasn't aware that there were device licenses for Terminal Services, only client access licenses. You might try contacting the Microsoft licensing clearinghouse.
  21. Have you checked the file attributes?? Right click a file or select all the files and choose properties. On the General tab, look to see if the Read Only attribute is selected -- if so, clear it. Test your connections again.
  22. You'll have to login to map drives. Create a batch file and put it in the startup folder. net use x: \\computername\sharename I'd also start the batch file with a delete net use x: /delete Or modify the original net use with a /persistant:no net use x: //computername/sharename /persistant:no You could also put the batch file somewhere handy and just run it when you need it. Hope this helps. Good luck!
  23. Hello everyone! I found this place through CertTutor. I hope I enjoy it here as much as I do there.
