I have a PC (compaq) with a 80gb hard disk. It has two partitions, 1, 70gb and 1, 10gb. The 10gb one hold all the software for a reinstall. I have been trying with NLITE to create a unattended XP CD so I can have one eighty gig partiton and also a back of my software incase the hard disk has a mechanical error. I have create the CD but I am now getting an error that says "PLEASE PUT YOUR WINDOWS XP CD INTO DRIVE A" So this is why I was wondering the order they took preference from. hail hail

I was wondering in what order unattended installs take the setup/start-up files. Say an installation has go mixed up and with another install set. What would be the order the install would take for example would a network unattended install take preference over a disk clone of XP ? Hail hail

I was thinking the other day that I have never used any of the Remote LAN Wakeup features on my network cards. And now I am looking for software to do this. I have searched and the only things I could find were all pay for. As I am doing this in the house I do not really want to fork out money for something that I will probably not use again. Has anyone got any tips on were I can find some freeware for this? Hail Hail

prathapml: Thanks; another great post ! i understand what you are saying. But the probelm is I work for a small company so the best way to buy pc/software is this format as it is greatly cheaper than buying the full blown versions of windows and office and a blank pc. But as the software is pre-installed and the re-install method is to installl from the hard disk it makes it time comsuming to setup printers/users/apps/mapped drives. This is why i would like to be able to put these on a CD and make a unattended install. I am going to try tomorrow using Nlite on the i386 folder and see if it can pop a unattended cd out for me. Also I will compare the folder to a 'normal' XP cd i386 folder and see if it is worth removing stuff by hand. If i get anything interesting it will be posted hail hail

Ghost82: The point would be to chage the install media fom a hard disk install to a CD install and take out all the things I do not want the pc to install in the event of a DR. Doing this would allow for the 10gb to be used for storage. Thanks for the reply hail hail

HP Compaq PC’s have the feature to reinstall from the hard drive that is in the pc, via a second partition. This annoys me because if you have a mechanical failure you cannot install windows again and you are sold a pc with an 80gb drive and in fact it is more like 70gb as there is a 10gb partition you cannot use. I have booted the pc using bartPE and found the i386 folder. And it got me thinking. 1 – Is it possible to use these files to create an unattended windows xp cd ? If so would it just be a case of dropping in the correct files ? (winnt.sif ect...) 2 – Is it legal ? Hail Hail

Tokugawapants: The problem with English is that with many languages it has a very diverse dialect. In my city alone there may be up to 5 or 6 ways of saying the same thing all of which could be understood by another Glaswegian. But to a “proper” English speaker would be incomprehensible. hail hail -
To add the function mapping a network drive to your current network location with a right click [similar to open command window here] use the attached registry file or create your own with the code below. The major probem with this is that after the first mapping you need to delete the network drive before you can map to another location. This for me is not a big problem as I use it for temporary jobs so it works fine for me. But could cause problems for others. If you want to change the drive letter used change the [i:] in the "net use I: %1" statement to whatever free drive letter you have available. Thanks to the help from mattofak and prathapml hail hail --start Netdrive.reg-------------- Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ;----- Get a new Right-click menu option (command box) [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Map Drive Here] @="Network Drive Here" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Map Drive Here\command] @="net use I: %1" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Map Drive DELETE] @="Network Drive DELETE" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Map Drive DELETE\command] @="net use I: /delete /y" --end Netdrive.reg-------------- mapnetdrive.reg

two postives always make a negative ?, Aye right ! and as it is Burns night here's a song youu may know Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne! Chorus: For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne. We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne. And surely ye'll be your pint stowp! And surely I'll be mine! And we'll tak a cup o'kindness yet, For auld lang syne. Chorus We twa hae run about the braes, And pou'd the gowans fine; But we've wander'd mony a weary fit, Sin' auld lang syne. Chorus We twa hae paidl'd in the burn, Frae morning sun till dine; But seas between us braid hae roar'd Sin' auld lang syne. Chorus And there's a hand, my trusty fere! And gie's a hand o' thine! And we'll tak a right gude-willie waught, For auld lang syne. Chorus hail hail -

since you are using a network share, I would use a batch command. I assume you are running XP so use the AT command to run your backup also you coulld have an icon to run your backup on a manual with a double click on an icon. if you are not worried about compresion or security why spend money when windows gives you the tools. if you need help to create the batch and at commands let me know. hail hail
