  1. So how do you play quick time movies then? Let me guess, you don't I not talking about installing quicktime, just the components needed to play quicktime movies.
  2. I've just sorted out our three machine network (all in the same room) with a Zalman solution. Their 80mm case fans are seriously quiet and work well for a CPU fan if used in conjuction with a 60-80mm adapter. Beware though that although they come with a resistor (I think) that allows it to operate in silent mode I noticed that one of the machines CPUs heated up quite badly so I removed the resistor. To be honest though it's still pretty quiet and that's my server so it'll be hidden away in a cupboard. I have the 60-80mm adapters on the two slower machines but for my beast I went for the Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu (Nice name huh!). It's a 90mm fan surrounded by copper fins. Just need to watch out for clearance between the fins and the PSU which BTW is the Zalman ZM400B-APS. I had to buy a new motherboard to enable me to even fit the CPU cooler onto the board (it needs four holes in the board around the CPU). It's still brushed up tight against some capacitors which is a little worrying but I think it'll be ok. They also do a 120mm version but I don't know how anyone gets THAT thing into their case! If you are considering getting one of these CPU coolers then checkout Zalmans website for compatibility with motherboards. I'm in the process of an unattended install of four machines while I write this and while I've swapped out all the case fans, the CPU one is waiting to get fitted to the new motherboard. Once it's done I'll post my results. Finally, Zalman also do heatsink only replacements for those noisy northbridge fans. So I got three of those to complete the solution.
  3. Did you install any software/drivers for it? What OS you on? Are there any 'unknown' devices in Device Manager? Actually, if it's partly working sounds more like a hardware fault. My Sidewinder also died a slow horrible death...do you feel comforted
  4. From the little information I could find on ffdshow, it seems it's not quite stable yet. Quite a few people have reported crashes or unstable machines. Has anyone else used it and could comment on their experiences?
  5. So ffdshow does this replace Windows Media Player and codecs as well? (Surely you still need things like the DRMclient.dll)?
  6. Thanks. I ended up using the full Unattended Codec-Pack (by swgreed) thanks to a gentle reminder by SiMoNsAyS I was using this pack already but had a funny five minutes and couldn't get things working. Real Player seems even more troublesome though. It seems others have had a similar issue whereby some RM/RA files/streams work ok and some don't. Fortunately most sites that offer Real Player also offer Media Player which I have working thanks to the WMP 10 Codec and Stream Pack (As I've removed Media Player (inc 6.4) using nLite.
  7. Anyone know how to get codec info from an embedded streaming link? Cheers Dobby
  8. Clearing the cache seems to have done the trick. Thanks!
  9. Since the update to the forum clicking the 'My Assistant' link opens a new window (as before) but then just displays the whole forum again instead of My Assistant. Clicking on My Asstant in this new window then goes to the correct My Assistant page. There is no issue with this in IE. Cheers.
  10. Ok here is the link: Console Silent Install Just add '/S' for silent operation. I can setup associations for cmdfile and batfile if ppl are interested Also I was thinking of changing the default icon for bat and cmd files. Watcha think?
  11. I've not seen much posted about Avast! Antivirus. I think it's a great virus checker and has some excellent features, is constantly updated with new virus definitions and versions and the best bit... it's free for home use!!! Anyway, thought someone might like to know the silent install switches and AutoIt script for installing the registration key (Yes you need to register even though it's free. Not bad though). You need to run avast once installed then run this script to register it. Silent switches: Setup.exe /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /SP- AutoIt Registration Script (replace the X's with your key): WinWait("Registration") WinActivate("Registration") Send("XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXX {ENTER}") WinWait("avast! - simple user interface") WinClose("avast! - simple user interface") WinClose("avast! Simple User Interface") Hope this helps someone.
  12. Yea sorry it's really rough. I'll put some better formatting in it probably tomorrow but being Valentines Day the Misses needs my attention I need links though. Cheers.
  13. Probably a bit late but I've made a silent install version of Console that also registers a decent monospaced font called Crystal. It's compiled with NSIS (Nullsoft installer). The uninstaller only removes the program files not the Console Here reg entry. If there's enough interest I can do this too. Anyone want it? If so I'll provide a link. It might be a bit specific for some people (e.g. it's configured for small window with border docked to the bottom right). You can always copy over the console.xml file though should you want your on settings. Well anyway just a thought.
  14. Anyone got a high res version of this. It's really nice. It'd look good with my visual style Found it on the Nasa site TIFF (2.5MB) or JPEG (50KB)
  15. I've not seen a post dedicated to links to media to test all the different codecs. As there are so many codecs I propose we get a list together of small video, audio, streaming or downloadable links to enable testing of the Unattended Codec-pack (Thanks swgreed you're the best ) with your favorite player. Ok here it is the page: Video and Audio Codec Test Page Please send me links. I'll be updating the page and putting up the links I have/can find as and when.
  16. A friend of mine has this setup and working (mostly). He said it's a real b*tch to setup for software based TV Cards (or something) he wants to get a proper hardware decoder. He said their support/forum is very good though. If anyone has specific questions about it then I'll ask him. Maybe I can get him to post some info here. He says it works great for controlling with the tv remote
  17. Yes Winamp can play movies. Search for Unattended Codec-Pack and Registering File Extensions Unattended. You need to be a bit more specific about the type of movie. Movies come in many different formats. Legal/copyright issues will be specific to a particular movie. Check the site you downloaded it from if you are concerned with the legal implications.
  18. The only reason it's fast is because it preloads certain DLLs in Windows. Neat Microsoft trick if you don't mind resources being taken up when you're not using it.
  19. You're Welcome I believe you need either Quick Time Alternative or the Unattended Codec-Pack. Not sure about win9x but I can't think of any reason why not.
  20. Thanks horsecharles, but I think I'm getting somewhere now. I reinstalled the Unattended Codec Pack on my machine and restarted firefox and it's working now. I just need to get it working on my UXPd Virtual PC install. I had QT and Real Alt installed on my machine before so that might be giving me a false positive. BTW - I just tried in_qt.dll plugin for Winamp and it works a treat EDIT: I'm a donut ... Looks like the unattended setup didn't run the codec install. Oops. Sorry for the trouble. I'll try to make it up by posting great tutorials on UXPCD when I'm done.
  21. Actually, I've just looked on the Winamp forum and found some info on how to play quicktime files in Winamp (However, this still doesn't help me fix the issue with playing quicktime in firefox). More interestingly though is a plugin that allows DVDs in Winamp too I'd love to get all media/audio playing in one player. The plugin (Power Player 2) only supports DVD playback on un copy protected discs. Shame but should have realised that. Ah well back to using Power DVD.
  22. I'm sorry I forgot to mention I have the unattended codec pack by swgreed as well. Thanks I've seen these topics before but I don't quite get how it helps me. When I said Quicktime extensions I didn't mean file extensions. Let me clarify: I should also mention that I have removed Media Player 6.4 and 9 with nLite. I have: * Firefox * Full Unattended Codec Pack * QuickTime Plugin from QuickTime Alt * Winamp 5.08 I have setup the required firefox associations. Is this combination possible is there anything I'm missing? Sorry to be a bit slow.
  23. I'm testing my UXPCD on Virtual PC and when browsing to the QuickTime test in Firefox it says QuickTime plugin requires QuickTime 5 browser extension. My Firefox install is the zipped version of Firefox (no installer). I'm manually registering extensions, themes, associations, etc. QuickTime, Realplayer plugins are from QuickTime and Real Alternative. I want to use Winamp to play any audio or video that doesn't play in Firefox. Is there a way to get the Quicktime extensions without installing QuickTime (Did I miss something from QuickTime Alternative)?? Is this even possible or do I need a player that will support playing in a browser? Thanks.
  24. Yes I've had this problem too. What's even more interesting is that the Quicktime Alt installer tells me to shutdown Firefox before continuing. It's probably some reg key it looks for when installing. I've included these keys in my Firefox install which fix issues with Flash and Shockwave not installing properly but haven't checked Quicktime/Real player Alt installers (I'm trying a different method to these. I want everything to play in Winamp). It's possible that the alt installers might also look for these keys but I can't be sure. [HKLM\Software\Mozilla\Mozilla Firebird] "GeckoVer"="1.0.1" [HKLM\Software\Mozilla\Mozilla Firebird\bin] "PathToExe"="<path_to_firefox>\Firefox.exe" [HKLM\Software\Mozilla\Mozilla Firebird\Extensions] "Plugins"="<path_to_firefox>\plugins" "Components"="<path_to_firefox>\components" [HKLM\Software\mozilla.org\Mozilla] "CurrentVersion"="1.5" Appologies if there are errors in these keys but I use a different install method (Nullsoft Installer). .Dobby.
