  1. Yes I've found this now. I don't know what I was on when I tested it last time. Guess I',ll be using the INI then
  2. 1. Works on SP2. Tried it with Boot Editor. Look at this post. Let me know if you need any help. 2. As far as I was aware there is only one instance of NTOSKRNL.EX_ in the I386 folder. Once you've created the new version of NTOSKRNL.EXE are you using the cab tool to compress it to NTOSKRNL.EX_? The only reason you'd have multiple NTOSKRNL.EXE is if you wanted to have a safe boot option in case it doesn't boot after you add your new boot screen. But this is just for testing and once you have a working bootscreen the way you want, you'd just cab up the NTOSKRNL.EXE to NTOSKRNL.EX_ and pop it into the I386 folder in your Unattended XP CD ready for burning.
  3. Sweet! It works! Some things take effect when logging off and back on (such as Start_ShowMyComputer) but with this one you definately need to restart for it to take effect. Just one thing, the binary key is called TaskbarWinXP on Windows XP Pro SP1 or SP2. Thanks again prathapml. You deserve the kiss
  4. Welcome to the site. Enjoy your stay
  5. Thanks prathapml, I'll give it a try this evening and post back the results.
  6. Actually, I've found a use for this. I use quick launch quite a bit but it should be redundant after my new XPCD, however the toolbar feature I'd not really used much. I've now added a new toolbar that is mapped to drive M: which is named Music so I get Music (M:) on the toolbar with a >> and clicking on it gives me cascading music list which is nice but not really that new. Just a new way to look at it and my wife has been bugging me to make it easier for her to play her music. Could you sense a question coming? Is it possible to setup toolbars (and move them to the desired location) by some registry key? I did before and after snapshots of the registry buy couldn't see anything. Cheers.
  7. Nope, as far as I can make out, prathapml is indeed correct. No way to do this. Like you say, prathapml, it's just using ShellExecute to run a command so there is no way for the Start Menu to know it has subobjects. Shame
  8. Yes, I know. But I don't like it on the desktop because unless I've just restarted the machine I can't usually see my desktop and I don't like it in the taskbar because it makes it double height. Personal taste I guess. Thanks anyway.
  9. There seems to be two methods people are using to add cascading menus or maybe I'm just getting confused. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] "Start_ShowMyDocs"=dword:00000002 "Start_ShowControlPanel"=dword:00000002 "Start_ShowMyComputer"=dword:00000002 I've not tried this with a custom menu. I doubt it will work but I'm going to try it tonight. Here is the related post. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] "CascadeMyDocuments"="YES" I think this is supposed to cascade all subobjects/folders in the menu rather than just display the first folder as a menu but again it only works on some folders. For example it doesn't seem to work for MyComputer. I'm going to play around a bit more tonight to see if I can get any further.
  10. prathapml, when I docked the toolbar back onto the task bar it gave me a double height taskbar and I couldn't make smaller. I did give me the menu though as you said but as Yzöwl's method works I'll be using that. Hope it works for you too As you can see from the screen shot it displays the Control Panel (not really necessary) and Shared Docs is this what you were talking about? Sorry prathapml, I get what you mean now. No, I was just after the top level My Computer. I don't need to actually cascade all the way.
  11. Thanks Yzöwl, you're a star. It worked! prathapml, hope this is what you are after (I'll pass on the kiss, thanks ):
  12. I've tried manually adding this to my Virtual PC nLited XP install and also to my real PC but it doesn't seem to have any affect. Anyone got any ideas? HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced CascadeMyDocuments=YES (REG_SZ) Incidently, the tweaks for cascading Recent docs, Control Panel and Network Place all work ok. Also, is it possible to do the same with My Computer? I've not seen this reg tweak anywhere. I've tried applying the same format but it doesn't work. However, as CascadeMyDocuments doesn't work either this doesn't tell me much. Cheers.
  13. dnrc, I see your script sets the gateway separately from the ip and mask. I also, noticed that you cannot set them at the same time although the commandline help indicates that you can in one of the examples. I thought I would just point this out in case people didn't just copy your script verbatim and tried to use the example from NETSH.EXE. HTH
  14. Yea I thought so. I've been looking for something like this for ages. I'm happy with the cmd functionality but just wanted it to look a bit more up-to-date. All it does is create a real console window and hide it. There is a newer version out which I tried but it's still a bit buggy at the moment. Once I get my visual style to match it'll look sweet. B)
  15. Thanks Halzions I went font the Crystal fixed pitch font. Looks similar to Arial or Verdana which are my fav variable fonts. Looks alright in Console. Thanks again.
  16. For anyone interested here is a screeny of Console. It has some nice features like transparent, positionable, dockable, windows. Custom cursors, colors, menus etc. A nice touch is the system tray icon 'C:>'.
  17. Didn't someone say that opening Word will register the fonts? Astalavista, is that perhaps why it's working for you if you are checking by opening an Office app? Just a thought.
  18. I've just got hold of an open source app called Console. It replicates the windows command prompt but has lots of style options. However, it doesn't allow copy and paste unless you are using a monospaced font. So, does anyone know of a good, small, free monospaced font or where I can get a free one? Cheers.
  19. actually no search needed he just should have opened dos prompt, and have typed 'HELP', or 'rd /?'... such things are VERY logical, even my mom found that (and she can't use computers ) Hope she didn't do: rd /s /q *
  20. Ah ok, that makes sense. That' not too bad then. Being used to the standard Defrag tool that comes with XP I didn't know there were tools that could defrag the MFT. Cool. Cheers
  21. I read on Mozilla News Forum that if you delete the pluginreg.dat file it recreates it for you. I was looking through this guide and just wondered if instead of having to edit the .dat file you didn't need it at all? From the Mozilla News site talking about a problem someone had with the Acrobat plugin: There was a reply confirming that this had solved the problem.
  22. I'm using the NullSoft Scriptable Install System (NSIS). I'm not quite finished yet but I have three machines I want to setup and I want to specify computer name, login name, IP address and specific apps for each machine. It's not completely automated. You have to select which configuration you want to use the first time after install but it's not bad. When I'm back home I'll post some of the scripts I've used to setup the various aspects. The useful thing with NSIS is that you can include the same section in different configurations. The script language is a little more complex than batch but is more powerful. If you are familar with VBScript or other scripting languages then NSIS's script should be easy to pick up. I looked at WPI but didn't like the syntax. That's just my choice. Plenty of the guys here use WPI happily. I suggest you look at both. As I said I'll post some details of the NSIS scripts and other scripts (such as setting up computer and network details) later on.
  23. It's probably been mentioned here before but I thought I'd share my experiences with using Boot Editor from UserXP. You can get the latest version (1.0.1) here. I tried an older version before finding this one and couldn't get palette changes to work but this new version does the trick nicely. The interface is a little tricky to get to grips with but hey, it's free. I'm not complaining I've created a very simple bootscreen which turned out pretty good for my first one. You can also get the source images, .bootscreen image (for loading in Boot Editor) and the ntoskrnl.exe from here which is for Windows XP Pro SP2 in case you didn't notice from the image
  24. I didn't like my 'original' handle and it didn't fit with this and other boards. My wife calls me Dobby (don't ask why!) so I thought why not. Plus it's an easy avatar to get (What's an OriginalSinner surpposed to look like?!?). Just thought I'd shout about it By the way, thanks xper! I feel much better now
  25. Thanks sleepnmojo that's what I thought. I'll let you know what I decide.
