Looks like there are a lot between 21-27. 26 here but still a kid at heart. Started out on the Commodore 64 with a 5 and a quarter floppy the size of a desk and and old tape drive. Moved up through the ranks thanks to my step-dad. I am self-taught and learned most of what I know from here and from my employment as a secretary for a government contractor. Plenty of internet time at that job! Rick

How do I get rid of this annoying bit of info that pops up on the Win logon screen? I don't even have MSN Messenger installed...I used Triallian. Rick
-
Man! I wish I had the time to play around with this stuff...a couple more weeks of school and then I'm gonna be all in this and Lindows! Rick
-
Yeah...believe it or not...some people do other things besides stick a computer in their faces all day long! LOL Thanks Piaqt...if it weren't so darn cold...this would be great! Rick

For electronic stuff like games...go to pricegrabber.com or xpbargains.com. You can get some coupon codes by searching coupon codes on Google for places like kbtoys online. Most of the sites are offering free shipping on orders over $50 or $100. Rick

They are out of the item that I want but I have it on my wrist right now...bought it at Wal-Mart. Anyway, I'm gonna "Return to Sender" and fuss like crazy about gettins something that I didn't order. If something goes wrong and I end up with a $50 paperweight..I'll either Ebay it or give it away as a Christmas gift. You know, I owe Chris for all the disks he has sent me! LOL Rick

I hear all kinds of complaints about how Norton is a resource hog and all that stuff but it has been an excellent firewall for me. The Internet Security software is the best because it also blocks ads very well plus it is more specific than others I have used about why it is raising the red flag. Rick

LS...you are right about the return to sender deal. They are sending it 1st class mail so I don't think it will have tracking with it. I may give that at try. Fthrjack..I did make the purchase online so my IP address is probably recorded. :-( We'll see what happens.
-
Yeah...I thought about that option too. I was thinking about calling them and saying..."I don't know who made the purchase but I'm returning to sender." Don't know if that would work or not. Rick

I gotta get out of a situation..... I bought a timex watch called the pager watch. I messed up thinking it was the same as another model that they have on sale that comes with a year of free paging service. The one I bought does not come with this deal. I would return it but the problem is that in big red letters, it says non-refundable and non-returnable. I don't want this watch and I made an honest mistake in thinking I was getting the same thing. Does anybody have an idea of how I can get out of this and have the watch sent back? I called customer and they were like, "so sorry". It has already been pulled and awaits shipping which means my credit card has been billed. Tried to do a stop payment and of course what I just explained tells why this was not possible. Give me some tricks! Rick

Spying on us all this time? LOL Welcome man...be creative and make your own unique sig. I bet Fthrjack will appreciate that. Rick

Thanks Aaron...tried that over and over. I found a solution...not one that I like but it works. I installed Office 2000 Outlook and it works. I have tried finding that MAPIR.DLL on all versions of Office that I have and it is nowhere to be found. I have a feeling that it has something to do with my installing Office 11 but I'll just use Office 2000 until a key is leaked or something. Rick

Thanks! The last thing you guys needed to tell me is to upgrade. There goes the money in my wallet! What little there is. Until that time...I will defrag a whole bunch...and one thing that made a big difference was increasing the virtual memory. I just hate to be on a computer when I know I got the memory, I got the chip speed, then a darn HDD is slowing me down! Thanks for your help. Rick

I hope this wouldn't have something to do with that reset key! Arggghh! Tris...or anybody else that has loaded this Office Beta 1...do you have this file? I am using WinXP BTW. Rick
-
I can't believe this! What the heck is this dll for? Take a look in your windows/system32 and that is where my file was. It still was not finding it though..so I deleted it hoping to get it from another disk. Rick

I tried to start Outlook 2002 after uninstalling Beta 1 and I get this message: Unable to locate MAPIR.dll. Then another message pops up to say that my mapi32.dll file is the wrong version or corrupt. I looked this prob. up in the MS knowledge base and only came up with a solution for mapi32 replacement. I can't find this MAPIR.dll file anywhere else including a brand new installation disk. Does anybody else have this file or can you offer some help? I am totally stuck here! Rick

Smart mouth! BTW--I just got this laptop two months ago! Dang! But do laptops come with faster HDD's? I know I can't expect this thing to be as fast as my desktop. Turning up the virtual mem has helped from what I can tell.

I have a laptop w/ these specs: Presario Athlon 1700+ 256 MB of DDR PC2100 origingal Ram upgraded with same type 256MB Crucial. 30GB 4200RPM HDD 256 FSB Can't find video info...I'm thinking it is 16MB memory. My question is this: I keep getting a bottleneck somewhere when trying to open apps and I have to sit and wait for what seems like forever for the computer to unfreeze from a hard drive that is about to spin out of the computer. I kept getting messages that my virtual mem was low so I upped it to 1500MB and 2000MB Max. Can somebody help fill me in on what the deal is here? I have a Duron 900Mhz with less memory at work that runs faster than this thing. BTW--Completely virus free, firewalled, and no trojans. Rick

Hey! I like it...we'll be there by 2010. LOL Rick

No that is something different. If you check that...it causes your network connection to show up to show the back and forth transmissions. That won't solve the popup that he's talking about. I would like to find an answer to that though because it gets on my nerves too! Rick

Xperties....I am having some reading difficulties lately! Forgive me for I know not what I do! Rick

Had a friend in a local flight club that took me up in one of those...everything got real small (tunnel vision) when we were diving straight to the earth! I lost my lunch after landing. Rick

Hash..this is exactly what I was thinking. I didn't orginally think about NAT being so powerful but after getting a wireless network and installing Norton Internet Security 2002, I never get an attack. Not once. I have had to go into configuration and open ports from time to time for the donkey but otherwise everything works. Norton has been very non-intrusive for me. It asks and has s good feature to automatically configure an app with logical settings. I think that even with a NAT you need a software firewall just because some of the progs that you run like to sneak onto the internet to get spyware and crap like that. Also, Norton Internet Security has a great add blocking feature. I also arm with Adaware Pro with the little watcher that detects spyware and bad cookies immediately. I never have probs. Also, Norton Antivirus has not let anything slip through as of date...can't say the same for Mcafee. The reason I go beyond the firewall is because you gotta get the whole arsenal out if you really want to guarantee no intrusions. Rick

I agree with you Chris...I want to try Lindows but I just dont 'have to nuts to do it. I am so used to windows and I'm afraid of compatibility issues. But as for appz go, if my memory serves me correctly, you subscribe for like $20 a month and get access to something like 19,000 appz that work on lindows/linux. I read that the office prog that they have it very good. But I go from computer to computer...it is really tough to take files from home and then go to work where all are M$ and then think of the nightmare of working from home. The progs have to work together and when will that happen? Not as long as M$ has a say. Rick
-
Yeah...you are exactly right and on the one hand..I just wonder what kind of quality and stability we would get if another company were able to have a standing chance of getting some of the market. Until then, it's whatever M$ says is just the way it is. I hope like crazy that Linux becomes a viable choice for everybody..opening the doors for many others. I have read a review on Lindows and I hear it's not too bad at all. Rick
