Windows 98SE "Immolator" - things to finish
M()zart replied to Offler's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Well, I recommend to keep it as an alternative media player to everyone. VLC does not provide comfortable interface or best quality, but it surely the best one when you need to view some non-standard format or broken video file. It saved me a lot of times, when no other player can view the file, and couple of times when no other player can view DVD under my Windows 98. Once I had very damaged avi file, all players displayed just a few minutes of it, and only VLC сould play it, showing an empty picture in the damaged places. There were broken fragments more than a minute long, but I could watch the movie almost completely. VLC 1.0.1 better understands non-standard files and has better Look&Feel, but does not work without KernelEx 4.0 Final 2. As for CD/DVD burning, currently I use SmallCDWriter because of its size. There are many CD/DVD/BD recording programms working on Win98. I'm currently going to try UUDS, it has more features and fits in 1,5 MB (with applying UPX), but it may be less stable. -
Chozo4, which tool do you use to see all these parameters? I'd like to try it.

Xeno86, Tihiy. I think, KernelEx needs a small walkthrough on how to add your own API or stub to its sources, then build it, and install your own build. Where to add API code, if there is a need to add a new file - into which project to add it, what changes to other files should be made to add an API or stub? Which are the naming rules? If you want to "patch" other dll, how to do it? What is the difference between the kexbases and kexbasen, and where to add your code? After the successful build how to install the result? If you made such thing, I think, you may find more contributors. Unfortunately, I'm not so good at system programming, but I want to try.

In the current version there are no such thing. I'm not sure about Windows ME. Better don't try to install this SP, it is intended for Windows 98. Try this one. And are you sure that you wrote correct number after Q? Google does not know such update. Please check the number.

I had the same problem too, but solved it. What you need that's not GDI+, but GDI update. There are links to all required updates on this page: http://tihiy.ahanix.org/RPUpdates.html You need the last link on the page, it goes here http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotf...px?kbnum=289635 Though this update is not available for all language. As for me, I installed this update with MDCU pack (you search this forum about it). PS: It is strange that nobody replied before me. Is anybody still reading this forum? The activity here lowered last month.

Tell us about the results, I'm curious. I also want to try its new Opera Turbo feature. It should be very good for my dial-up connection om 98 se box.
-
Firefox 3.5. Horizontal scrolling appears because of too large boxes. Opera works good.

Can I ask what brings you to this win-9x forum then? You don't use 98, you don't like it, and I don't think I've seen you post anything constructive or helpful here about win-98. It's a good question IMO and I'd like to know, why you're wasting your precious (as I guess) time on Win9x zealots forum? He was polite, so don't drive him out. Besides, he is telling the truth. I know it because I'm using both OSes. I had more than month uptime on XP and on 98 I never have more than 8 hours uptime, because I like to experiment with different software. On XP I've experimented even more, so OSes were in equal conditions.

What you're saying here is quite logical. I'm not overly sure why the W3C would choose a longer tag. Perhaps there is a reason though. I also agree with this. I know about STRONG tag semantic value, but why they didn't just "assigned" this semantic value to B (and corresponding one to I tag)? To bloat code of web pages? Yes, I think the reasons in this picture are correct

KernelEx App Compatibility Database
M()zart replied to Th3_uN1Qu3's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
As I see the referenced API, it should work with KernelEx, but should not without it. So as I see only SeaMonkey, Opera and K-Meleon still support Win9x without KernelEx. With KernelEx you are able to run Firefox and Flock, and may be Wyzo - another browser on gecko engine. I'll test Wyzo later. -
As I see, EyesOfARaven is not interested in the feedback...

Tried it again with Python 2.5 and 2.6, and wxPython 2.8. The same with pythonw, with python received the following error: Periscope File Manager copyright © 2009 The Infotaxis Project All rights reserved. Traceback Onost recent call last): File "c:\periscope\periscope.py'', line 442, in <module> application = app(0) File "d:\Python25\lib\site-packages\wx-2.8-msw-unicode\wx\_core.py'', line 7978 , in _init_ self._BootstrapApp() File "d:\Python25\lib\site-packages\wx-2.8-msw-unicode\wx\_core.py", line 7552 in _BootstrapApp return _core_.PyApp_BootstrapApp(*args, **kwargs) File ''c:\periscope\periscope.py", line 423, in OnInit frame = main(None, -1, abspath+" - Periscope") File ''c:\periscope\periscope.py", line 363, in _init_ self.SetstatusText("Periscope "+opsys+" - "+str(itms)+" items''+hidline) UnboundLocalError: local variable 'hidline' referenced before assignment

Tried it, didn't run. Though I have python 2.5.1, not 2.6. Windows XP. pythonw.exe does not tell anything, just didn't run. When I'm trying to launch it with python.exe, it complains about missing wx module. Please specify the system and python requirements in more details, or upload full pack, so I shouldn't search for something missing.

Because many users are still browsing with it. We don't want to alienate ~15% of our users. In practice, this isn't always true. Not just bells and whistles, as I pointed out. 100% agree with this. I'm not a professional web designer, but I make part of work maintaining the website of the company I work for. And IE6 is my biggest headache. I don't use much active content, the problems mostly occur with CSS. The second headache are Opera and IE7, but there already were few errors. Other browsers are not trouble at all, especially my favorite - Firefox. So, as a web developer I wish IE6 to die. Though we still support it and I think will support it for a few more years. But as Win98 user, I wish long life to IE6 . Actually, even under Win98 I use IE only to download Opera or Firefox. Currently I'm using FF 2.0.0.20 and latest Opera, but I don't browse much under Win98. For everyday use I recommend latest Firefox with KernelEx or Opera.

I think its hardware-specific. I can hear sound from one or two apps. If I launch third app with sound, the first one stops producing sound and continues to run silently. But no crashes.

Well, I don't believe that Win98 provides more security. But as for me, I prefer user control over OS rather than security. I agree to be at risk, but I want to have possibility to install any apps, control services, etc. WinXP with third party utils provides enough control for me and nice security. But Vista does not (I mean that I cannot install unsigned drivers, for example). Recently I've deleted my antivirus because it REALLY slowed down my internet connections when downloading torrents. I mean when I downloaded torrents with my torrent client speed of ALL connections, including torrent slowed triple and more times because AV needed to verify all the traffic. And my AV did not provide enough control to disable this. So I decided that my comfort is more important, I encountered viruses may be twice a year if not more seldom and I got infected only once in all my life.

As for me, I have two PCs, modern one Core 2 Duo in the city at my flat where I live most of time with Vista, and a second PC in our family house in the countryside with Windows 98. I installed Win98 on it because I had only 1,7 Gb HDD when I built it. It has Celeron 1GHz and 256 Mb RAM, but HDD is enough only for Windows 98. All other HDDs are in my newer PC, and if I by a new HDD, I'll place it to the new PC, because I need more space there. Now after more than a year of using Windows 98 PC, running Windows 98 became my hobby. Even if I find an HDDD for it, I'll stay with Win98 until this PC will die. And I like to play old games, that need DOS. Personally I consider XP the best Windows, and 98 is my second favorite. Vista sucks, I installed it only because I had troubles with my not very good MoBo - Asus P5K under XP.

I have an issue (not very annoying). Often after playing "Plants vs Zombies" (DirectX 8 game) several times some icons (not all) on the desktop lose their transparency. It happens mostly after plants vs Zombies was launched and played, then closed, then launched and closed again. Desktop restores after reboot only. May be that occurs because I have a shortcut to the deleted app on the desktop, but the icon is still correct - may be cached somewhere.
-
I even tell you more, this Plants&Zombies game of 2009 year doesn't run on my Vista PC, only on my 98 PC On my Vista PC it cannot find some function in bass.dll. Isn't it funny? Upd: Solved this problem. It occurred because Vista prefers dll from Windows\System32 even if the right dll is in the folder with the game itself. And Vista dll was too new Just made the backup copy and replaced the dll in Windows\System32 and it worked. But I didn't need to do anything like that on Windows 98, it just run. The game of 2009 year suits more for Windows 98 than for Vista. I definitely like this game

How did you get such result? My 98 is bigger (with latest unofficial updates, DirectX, RP9 and drivers), and it is impossible to work on 98 without this stuff.
-
If not hardware than it more likely drivers. Drivers for Win2K and Win98 are different, may be 98 drivers have such bug. If you have the same problem as me (sound crippling when accessing HDDs), may be you don't have other choice (for win 98) than buying separate sound card.
-
It looks like motherboard design or driver problem for me. I have ASUS P5K and it had the same problems: timing issues with some software that plays sound, audio crackling. It had them on XP and on Vista too until the company that sold me this PC found some setting that optimizes IDE hard drive perfomance. Actually sound started crippling and apps playing sound slowed down each time when computer used my IDE hard disk drives. Do you have the same problem? It was solved in the latest HDD controller drivers for my motherboard, though I did not tried them. It does not depend on OS.
-
Why not? Many modern small casual games will run on Windows 98, though Win98 support is not written officially. I'm playing Plants&Zombies on 98 now, though the game says that it wants XP.

IrfanView is the best for me. Still supports Windows 9x officially, reads many formats with plugins, provides simple picture editing. I experiencing some glitches with its toolbar appearance on Windows 98, but it is still my favorite. XnView is good too, supports much more formats, but as I know, it dropped Win98 support, have much bigger size and less convenient and intuitive interface. I have them both.

OOXML support for OpenOffice.org older versions compatible w/ Win98
M()zart replied to Steven W's topic in Windows 9x/ME
OpenXMLViewer can be used on Windows 98, though it requires KernelEx and Visual C++ 2008 runtime (which works on Windows 98 with KernelEx, just put all its libraries into Windows\System folder). Does not require .NET framework. One of the smallest solutions (5.6 Mb after removing unnecessary Visual C++ 2008 runtime libraries - mfc, atl, etc.). Installed their plugin for Opera.
