  1. I have a couple of questions on KernelEx and some applications. Does VLC need any specific compatibility mode? When I don't set any compatibility mode it shows me an "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" error when opening my DVD disk. However I may watch it if I don't close this message but move its window out of the screen. I always had this error with VLC 1 and 1.1 and all tested KernelEx versions. I have russian Windows 98 SE, and VLC uses russian language. When I enable Win2K or WinXP compatibility for it, all letters become black squares. I don't really care about it, because I don't use a compatibility mode for VLC, however QtWeb browser gives me the same black squares instead of menus and labels in its dialogs, and it is not usable without Win2K compatibility mode. Is there any way to fix it?
  2. Installed the latest KernelEx version and unfortunately, my USB flash stick problem, that was gone with the RC1, is back
  3. Office 2007 compatibility pack cannot be installed on 98 even with KernelEx. Edit: And about PolyEdit - it needs Office 2007 compatibility pack for opening docx, so its not an option for opening docx under Win98.
  4. Media Player - I use 1by1 - very small and light MP3 player. It can also use some Winamp input plugins for other formats. BTW, why not good old Winamp 2.xx? I think it is very light too.
  5. May be eve would help. Though it is very tiny and not very feature rich app. Just search 'eve vector graphics' or so. I'm writing from mobile phone, so it is a problem for me to copy link. It works on 98, don't know if it does on 95.
  6. Found a couple of games which still work on Windows 98 RIP - Last Hero and Oil Blue. They seems relatively modern.
  7. Thanks for the reply. I said that not the keyboard, but PS/2 port is going to die. Often keyboard stops working and I should adjust its connector in the port, which is cranky. Actually it is not even a PS/2 keyboard, it's older than PS/2 and is connected through the adapter, which is a bit heavy. I suspect that is the reason why the port is cranky. I have a newer PS/2 keyboard with Windows keys in my new PC, so replacing keyboard wouldn't be the problem.
  8. Just run the downloaded installer, it should be exe file. I enable KernelEx for all applications in installation settings. If some application has troubles after KernelEx installing, open the properties of the application file or shortcut, go to the Compatibility tab, and disable KernelEx for it. The installer will install the KernelEx and prompt to reboot. After rebooting you should see the message that KernelEx is successfully installed and functional. Which version is up to you. Beta 2 seems a bit more stable, however I installed RC1 yesterday and everything seems fine. RC1 supports the latest firefox versions, Beta 2 does not support Firefox 3.6 and later. It absolutely doesn't matter. It depends on the KernelEx version you have chosen. If you installed RC1 than install the latest (currently 3.6.8), if you installed Beta 2 install the latest 3.5.*.
  9. Uninstalled KernelEx 4.5 b2. After this USB flash drive worked, I had no problem. Installed KernelEx 4.5 RC1 - after first reboot all is still OK. Today I'll check if it still works after several reboots and after shutting down with flash stick in, then removing it. BTW - another question. My PS/2 keyboard port seems to be going to die. Can I use USB keyboard if I have USB 1.1 ports and I doubt that USB is supported in BIOS? My MB is Intel D815EPE2U.
  10. Yes, I had this issue too. After couple of uninstallations/installations it was fixed, though I don't remember exact steps.
  11. I haven't, but I can tell something about Kernelex with a virtual machine in the latest Virtual PC. Guest Additions should be installed and removed only when KernelEx is uninstalled. When the KernelEx is installed, Guest Additions work OK, but are not detected correctly. Virtual PC reports them as not installed, though they function. Installing/uninstalling them with KernelEx installed can mess up the additions. Though this is not fatal, you can always uninstall KernelEx, then install/uninstall additions.
  12. Tried this. There were no prompts about overwriting. Nothing changed, everything OK when flash stick was plugged in before booting, and explorer did not show me the contents of My Computer after inserting flash stick when system already booted up. I have forgotten to try booting with flash stick, then removing it and inserting again. I'll try also removing KernelEx in 3 days or so.
  13. I think this is because it is 16bit exe, and Compatibility tab should appear for 32bit apps only. I thought KernelEx affects only 32bit apps...
  14. After all now I'm having another trouble with USB. When USB flash stick is plugged in when booting everything is OK. But if I plug it in after the system boots up, any application that tries to access it hangs up (for example Explorer or Total Commander). Then after couple of minutes whole system freezes. There was not such problem before I turned off USB errors detection, which was adviced on MDGX site. Any suggestions?
  15. It seems that I was wrong about polyedit. I was told that it opens docx only with MS converter, which cannot be installed on Win9x. I'll check it later.
  16. At last it seems that my problem with shutdown with USB flash drive plugged in and KernelEx installed is fixed after I applied FIX WIN98 SE USB + SHUTDOWN ERRORS instruction, step 2. If there are anybody with the same problem, you may try it as well.
  17. I tested the situation, but the error was not reproduced. However that was already after I applied FIX WIN98 SE USB + SHUTDOWN ERRORS instruction, step 2. It seems, that indeed fixed my USB shutdown error occurring only with KernelEx installed. As for DOS - I even don't have CD and DVD devices until I load Windows. I never had USB pendrive in DOS.
  18. Installed RP 9.6.5, working OK, buttons in the setup dialog are OK too.
  19. I have found another small word processor that opens docx files nicely and works even under Windows 95 OSR2. Its PolyEdit ( http://polyedit.com/ ). Very nice, has very much features for its size and requirements. Does not need KernelEx or .NET Framework to run. However tables support is not enough powerful (but present).
  20. I'll test it in more details in several days, I don't have access to that PC currently. BTW, it has USB 1.1 ports, not USB 2.0.
  21. Found bug in KernelEx 4.5 b2 - it does not set compatibility for the exe file if the filename or path contains russian characters. I have russian Win98.
  22. Using NUSB 3.3 on Win98 SE with latest KernelEx and Revolutions Pack. Usually I plug my USB flash disk in before turning PC on and it stays with it untill shutdown. After shutdown I removed USB flash disk, and next day I booted up without it. After this I plugged USB flash disk in, but it was not recognized. Device manager showed me USB flash disk in USB devices but not in the storage devices. I several times removed it and plugged in, but nothing changed. I rebooted and plugged it in before booting windows, and then it was recognized OK. What is the reason of this?
  23. speedyfox - a program, optimizing your firefox browser works. And the 10 Talismans game.
  24. I'm using VLC 1.0.3 portable occasionally (for some DVD that is not played with anything else). Sometimes I get an illegal operation box. I just don't close it - I move it beyond the edge of the screen, and VLC plays DVD OK with this box. Going to try VLC 1.1 soon.
