  1. Opera is not so hungry. I think under Win98 128 Mb will be enough for everything, and it will run on 64 Mb. Firefox is much more hungry.
  2. I've checked my font, it seems OK. I don't think it will be OK to upload it here, so here go its properties: Trebuc.TTF 65,100 04.11.1998 17:30 ---- Trebucbd.TTF 65,300 04.11.1998 17:30 ---- Trebucbi.TTF 65,296 04.11.1998 17:30 ---- Trebucit.TTF 71,320 04.11.1998 17:30 ---- Its description (first file) from Font TC plugin says: In the sample box I can type russian characters and they are displayed OK. But the installer looks like the following. And another question. Do I still have RP 9.6.1 or you just didn't change version number here (on the screens)? I installed 9.6.3 I think. Though may be I have chosen wrong button when upgrading it.
  3. Yes, it just enables some new programs. No, it not just set of files. It patches Kernel32.dll and implement some APIs that are not implemented in Windows 98. You cannot achieve such effect just by adding/replacing some files with newer ones (because newer ones from MS, where these APIs are implemented, are created for newer Windows systems and will not work on Windows 98).
  4. Well, I have working 1,7 GB (even not GiB) Fujitsu HDD, which is still in use as my main and only HDD in my Windows 98 PC. It still works perfectly despite of quite often Reset button using.
  5. At last tried RP 9.6.3. Everything works great except minor bug with installation/uninstallation - when I have run setup (with RP 9.6.1 or 9.6 RC installed) the buttons with different actions (I think they are something like Uninstall, Upgrade, etc.) are with non-russian and non-english characters. I'm using russian Win98 and all other text in RP is in Russian and is displayed OK, except for these buttons. May be I lack some font with russian characters? Which font is used on these buttons? Upd: My shutdown problem was not solved, but I think it's more KernelEx related than RP related.
  6. I have already written about similar problem in the KernelEx thread. Do you have any USB device plugged in when shutting down? I have noticed that it can be the reason, but I'm not sure, I have not performed thorough testing.
  7. Well, there are many ways to lose it. For example - there were many third-party cleaners which free HDD space by deleting unnecessary files in the time of Windows 98, some of them choose files by extension and *.bck, *.bak were considered unnecessary.
  8. Great news! I'll test it soon, for a few weeks I always had to use Power button to shutdown.
  9. I wouldn't advice that. I think older HDDs are more reliable and live much longer than modern ones. I still have 1,7 Gb HDD bought in 1997 as main and only HDD in my second (Windows 98) computer. It outlived two modern HDDs already. Only this year I started to hear loud clicks, meaning that it is not reliable any more and can die soon (Am I right about click meaning?). Several months before I started to hear such clicking in my third modern HDD in my main computer. So, it lives more than three modern HDDs together.
  10. Hm, I thought that the latest Opera should work even without KernelEx... Though I stay with Opera 10.0 currently.
  11. I have searched for XPS viewer for Windows 98 and found one that can open a file with KernelEx installed - STDU Viewer. It also can read tiff, pdf, djvu, cbz/cbr, tcr, and jbig2 files. The latest version worked and opened an xps file OK, but there is the foolowing bug - every interface element of some of its windows appears in its own window with caption don't work pro, don't work properly and garbages screen space. For example all the interface elements of the search toolwindow and add bookmark dialog appeared in that way. Despite of this, I think, the program can be still useful, it opens and displays files correctly, search works through the quick search box on toolbar, and garbage windows can be moved to the edge of the screen.
  12. Please add PrintWindow function to the KernelEx. It seems, it is the last missing import for Aston Menu. Not sure if Aston Menu will work, but I think it worth trying. PrintWindow implementation from Wine should be OK, as I see. May be just replace SendMessageW with SendMessageA, because there are no strings to send. Upd: Well, I tried to do this, but Aston menu crashes. So may be there is no need for this function...
  13. Remember, I (and some other people) wrote about errors during reboot and shutdown? It seems that I found when they are reproduced. They are reproduced usually when I shutdown or reboot with usb storage device plugged in. As my hdd is just 1.7 Gb, it is often plugged in all the time, when I shutdown or reboot. I'm using NUSB 3 (as I remember, 3.3) and I have USB 1.1 ports, not USB 2. It seems, the error is not reproduced without KernelEx installed. After installing RP 9.5 (I don't know if this is the reason) I've encountered an error, which I never had before - CrystalPlayer 1.98 crashed in kexbases.dll. It is Win98 compatible application and works without KernelEx. I have been using it all the time and it always worked OK. Now after this crash I have disabled KernelEx for it, and I have not tested if the error is reproducible. Program CRYSTAL caused an error accessing stack (this is my translation from russian) in module KEXBASES.DLL at 0187:bfa41c4e. 14. Tried 9.5 om my Win98 PC, everything worked great (except for already mentioned too early resource warning), thanks.
  15. Great news! Certainly will test it when I get to my Win98 PC. It will be on this (most likely) or the following weekend. Many thanks, Tihiy!
  16. Yes, I'm watching the giveawayoftheday too. BTW, recently I downloaded and tried Start Menu 7 from them, my VistaStartMenu patch works with it and allows launching that retail Start Menu 7 on Windows 98 with KernelEx.
  17. Well, my Win98 "media kit" includes the following: Latest supported K-Lite codec pack (don't remember exact version for Win 98) I often don't use MPC from it, instead I use my favorite Crystal Player, which unfortunately is not developed any more. Latest GOM Player and VLC as alternative players, I could play some DVDs only with them. Flash Movie Player for flash. 1by1 - very tiny and cute audio player with a set of plugins.
  18. Have you tried 10.52 beta? In seems to be more stable than 10.51 by some references. Or you may try to make a clean installation of Opera 10.5 (remove previous version and all its stuff, then install again). If it worked previously, the clean install should work...
  19. Great news! I always wanted QtWeb on Win98, but I have not tried Win2K mode.
  20. At last I could get to my Win98 PC and perform testing. Somehow neither issue was reproduced. KernelEx was successfully uninstalled and no problem with shortcuts happened. After installing KernelEx again I have successfully rebooted several times and everything was OK. I could not shutdown correctly again however, but I have tried just once. May be the previous errors occurred because I uninstalled KernelEx after the first boot after its installation? However I can test it only in a few weeks again.
  21. I've already used winhlp32 from WinXP with KernelEx for several weeks, I have not encountered any problems with it. It's better than Win98 one because my Win98 one didn't allow mouse wheel scrolling help topics.
  22. Have you tried rebooting after installing the font?
  23. With KernelEx, this is the topic about apps, which require KernelEx to work. I have tried with 4.5 beta 2, but didn't tested with previous versions, may be with them too. Doesn't need setting special compatibility mode.
  24. If you want to open it for viewing and have KernelEx installed, you may try TextMaker Viewer 2010 ( http://www.officeviewers.com/ )
  25. TextMaker Viewer 2010 works! http://www.officeviewers.com/ Nice free viewer for tmd, doc, docx, odt and other formats. However, it crashed when I tried to view html file, but it opened several doc files and tmd file correctly without errors. Unfortunately I didn't have any docx file to test.
